The processing station for the vanguard recruits smelled heavily of damp parchment, iron polish, and the faint, bitter tang of specialized ink. "And the placement matters?"

"It does." The clerk rested both hands on the counter.

"I also left a half-finished project on my desktop," Davis sighed dramatically.

"The managers are probably losing their minds." Miller scratched his cheek.

"I just want normal—normal roof, normal bed, normal weather. This place... everything here wants to kill us." Leon looked toward Maya.

"What about you?" She shrugged.

"... Come to think of it, when was it that you started calming down... Wasn't that around the same time Leon got hired?" Leon smoothly interrupted.

"For me..." Everyone looked toward him.

"For the first time in my life, the world actually follows the same rules I've spent twenty years preparing for. I have family and friends. I miss them, but I also know they will be fine without me." Silence followed as nobody knew exactly what that meant, but everyone understood one thing: Leon wasn't looking for a way home. He had already found where he belonged. The clerk shattered the quiet, slapping five bronze identification plates onto the counter.

"Done." Each plate bore their name alongside the insignia of the frontier garrison—crude, heavy, and official. This was their first identity in this new world. The barracks were simple, featuring stone walls, canvas cots, and heavy wooden beams with enough space for dozens of soldiers. Within minutes of lying down, Davis and Miller were asleep. "So," he rolled onto one side, "twenty questions?" Leon smiled.

"Wrong."

"I'm done. Tomorrow's gonna be rough." He rolled over.

"Get some sleep." Leon nodded.

"I'll try." He closed his eyes, but thirty seconds later, he opened them. He rolled onto his other side and closed them again. He counted backward from one hundred, reached one, and was still awake. He sighed.

"Right... Forgot." Severe ADHD and insomnia had been lifelong companions, so eventually he gave up. Quietly slipping out of bed, he left the barracks. The fortress at night was peaceful, with torches burning softly atop the walls and patrols marching with measured footsteps. A cool breeze carried the scent of pine and fresh water. Near the eastern edge of the camp sat a small lake, its still surface rippling under the moonlight. Someone was already there.

Before Leon could speak, a voice called out, "Couldn't sleep?" It was Maya, and she hadn't even turned around. Leon sat beside her.

"Severe insomnia—a classic. What about you?" She hugged her knees.

"I normally need sleeping pills." She smiled faintly.

"... Although... maybe if you stay nearby I'll actually fall asleep." Leon blinked.

"... Whoa. What exactly do you mean by that?" Maya laughed.

"Do you know what I had you saved as in my phone?"

"No."

"Magical Stress Ball." Leon stared.

"... You what?"

"I'm serious." She laughed again.

"I don't know how you do it, but whenever anyone stays around you, they calm down. I noticed it during my first month, and eventually I moved my desk beside yours entirely because of you." Leon scratched the back of his neck.

"... Seriously?"

"You think I was the only one?" She smirked.

"Leon, the dumbest employee in our department was still an engineer; we notice patterns." She began counting on her fingers.

"People started timing coffee breaks to match yours. Meetings you attended somehow ended with fewer arguments. Whenever you worked from home, everyone complained the office felt heavier." She chuckled.

"We even had a name for it: The Leon Effect." Leon couldn't help laughing.

"So that's what everyone was secretly calling it."

"Yep." She leaned back, looking toward the unfamiliar stars.

"Now it makes sense. Your Universal Vessel probably has some passive calming ability. I wonder how many hidden powers that thing actually has." Leon smiled quietly.

"It's... not exactly that. But... I honestly didn't realize people noticed."

"We noticed. I just happened to notice first." A comfortable silence settled between them until eventually Maya spoke again.

"You know... I've always wondered something." Leon looked over.

"Back on Earth... every lunch break... you disappeared. No one could ever find you. What were you doing?" Leon looked toward the stars, and a small smile appeared.

"Maybe... I'll tell you one day."

"Hmph." Maya yawned.

"It must be nice to always have that calming aura. I wish I had it." Within another minute, her breathing slowed and her shoulders relaxed. The tension she'd carried for years simply melted away as she fell asleep just like that. Leon looked down at her peaceful expression.

"... No you don't," he whispered.

"Trust me." He leaned back into the grass, looking up at the two unfamiliar moons.

"... Funny. I spent twenty years trying to become extraordinary." He remembered the impossible theories, the endless experiments, the sleepless nights, the broken soul, the Universal Vessel, and everything else he had sacrificed.

"And the first thing people noticed..." He glanced toward Maya sleeping peacefully beside him, "... wasn't any of that. It was that they slept better around me." A quiet laugh escaped him—bittersweet and almost ironic. He had devoted two decades chasing power that could change the world, yet instead, the very first gift that world had ever noticed was comfort. Under the alien night sky, Leon closed his eyes. For once, his mind felt surprisingly quiet.
