Joe waited four full days before performing the final defensive tests. Good food. Normal exercise. No heavy Skin work. Plenty of sleep. The winter air outside remained brutally cold, but the rented room warmed quickly after Joe lit the brazier. He checked every piece of equipment twice. Padded weight. Release distance. Training cloth. Pressure. Target regions. Then he began. The first result was so far outside his expectation that Joe stopped and reset the equipment. He repeated it. Same.

He changed the target region. Same general result. He replaced the cloth despite knowing it was fine. Again. Then he sat down. For several minutes, the only sound in the room was the low crackle of charcoal. Joe reconstructed the progression mentally. Ordinary first Completion: baseline. Second pass: large improvement. Third through VIII: diminishing gains, gradually approaching around one-point-nine times the original defensive quality. Ninth... Not two. Not even close. Around three. The number was rough.

His tests were too primitive to claim three-point-zero anything. Depending on the type of stress, the practical difference varies. Abrasion, blunt impact and pressure did not scale identically. But the overall order was clear. The ninth tempering had taken the defensive layer from roughly twice ordinary quality to somewhere near three times. Joe leaned back against the wall. So, the curve wasn't wrong. That was the first thing he realized. The early and middle repetitions really had produced diminishing returns.

The ninth did not invalidate them. Something else had happened. His best explanation was integration. The first eight passes had improved individual regions toward increasingly high quality, but the entire defensive layer remained limited by small inconsistencies. Once the ninth tempering eliminated enough of those weak transitions, the strong regions could finally work together without stress concentrating prematurely in weaker ones.

If that was correct, the ninth pass had not magically added fifty percent more tissue quality overnight. It had allowed the quality already accumulated across eight repetitions to function as a complete system. Joe liked that explanation. He did not trust it yet. There was no way to prove it with the tools available to him. Still, he needed some private language for what he was experiencing. Ordinary martial terminology was inadequate. The first successful Skin Tempering was already called Completion.

That was the standard necessary to move onward. Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon. This was something beyond that. Joe thought about the phrase for a while before settling on one. Great Completion. He almost laughed at himself. It sounded more dramatic than he preferred. Still, it described the distinction well enough. Ordinary Completion meant the layer had reached the standard required for advancement.

Great Completion would be his private term for a layer pushed through repeated tempering until its ninth pass produced this integrated state. Nothing more. No recognized realm. No ancient classification. No reason to think anyone else had ever used the phrase the same way. And there is absolutely no reason to tell anyone.

The obvious question came next. Could he do it again? Joe did not attempt a tenth Skin Tempering that night. That would have been impatience pretending to be curiosity. He recovered first. Several days later, in the same private room, he performed a familiar Skin-tempering sequence using Blood Energy. The method was correct. His breathing was correct. Physical stress was appropriate. Blood Energy circulated exactly as expected. The skin responded to the exercise. But there was no tempering. Joe waited.

Tried another region. Nothing meaningful. He stopped. Two days later he tried again, using a different type of controlled stress. Same result. Blood Energy moved. The tissue warmed. No improvement. Joe rested longer before the third attempt. That one gave the same answer. He sat near the shutter afterward, looking out through the narrow opening at falling snow. Interesting. Not frustrating. Interesting. If the ninth were simply the biological maximum of Skin, that would explain the result.

But Joe had already encountered enough of the martial system to distrust absolute conclusions. Blood Energy was not the highest energy that existed. Acquired practitioners converted something within themselves into Acquired Qi. Innate involved another qualitative change. Grandmasters interacted with natural energy in ways ordinary martial artists could not. Joe did not know enough about any of those stages yet. Maybe Skin is finished. He watched snow gather along the opposite roof.

Or maybe Blood Energy is finished. That second possibility felt more compelling, but compelling was not evidence. A higher-quality energy might someday refine the layer further. Or it might not. Perhaps Great Completion represented the actual physical ceiling regardless of energy. Perhaps higher realms transformed the body in entirely different ways and revisiting Skin would be pointless. Joe had no way to know. So, he left the question open.

That was becoming another mark of maturity he had not possessed as a child: the ability to let an unanswered question remain unanswered without filling the gap with certainty. For now, the useful conclusion was much narrower. Blood Energy produces no meaningful Skin Tempering beyond the ninth pass. That was enough.

The next morning, Joe woke hungry. Not unusually hungry. That almost felt strange. For months, Skin Tempering consumed medicine, food and attention. Now the layer felt settled. Blood Energy circulated through it smoothly, but there was nothing left for his current energy to refine. Joe dressed and walked toward Edwin's house through fresh snow. Blackwood looked cleaner after snowfall than it had any right to. The blackstone streets formed dark paths between white roofs. Shopkeepers swept entrances.

Smoke from breakfast fires drifted low because there was almost no wind. A grain wagon creaked through the intersection ahead; its driver wrapped in so many layers that only his eyes remained visible. Joe flexed one hand inside his glove. Three times ordinary Skin Completion, roughly. His external defense had become extraordinary for his current public standing, yet almost none of it was visible. He had not grown scales. His skin had not changed color. His hands still looked like hands. That was ideal.

Strength that announced itself was useful. Strength that remained hidden until needed was better. Joe smiled faintly as he crossed the street.

Simon was already eating when Joe entered Edwin's dining room. He looked up.

"You look pleased." Joe removed his coat.

"Do I?"

"Yes." Mira glanced over from the sideboard.

"He does." Edwin looked up from a supplier letter.

"Something with medicine?"

"No." Simon leaned forward.

"Training?" Joe sat down.

"Part of it."

"How much?" Joe reached for bread.

"Enough." Simon sighed dramatically. Mira put another bowl on the table.

"Why do you keep asking him questions when you know exactly how he answers?"

"Because one day he might become normal." Joe looked at him.

"You have known me my entire life."

"Exactly. I am patient." Edwin folded the supplier letter.

"Not especially." Simon looked offended.

"Why is everyone attacking me this morning?" Mira sat down.

"Nobody is attacking you." Joe nodded toward Simon's plate.

"You took the last egg." Simon immediately covered it with one hand.

"That is unrelated."

"It might become related." Mira laughed, Edwin shook his head, and the conversation moved on. Joe let it. No one asked what he had actually completed. No one needed to know.

Later that day, Joe returned to his room and brought out the Muscle Tempering material he had copied from Theodere's accessible library years earlier. The pages were ordinary. Diagrams. Postures. Breathing instructions. Blood Energy routes. Warnings about overstrain. Nothing about repeated tempering beyond ordinary completion. Nothing about ninth passes. Nothing about Great Completion. Good. Joe had no desire for the world to explain his discovery conveniently after the fact. He read the opening section again.

Muscle was different from Skin. Skin absorbed and resisted external stress. Muscles produced force, controlled motion, maintained flexibility under tension and recovered from exertion. A new function. A new layer. And now Joe had a question far more interesting than the one he had started with. Would repeated Muscle Tempering follow the same curve? Large gain early, diminishing returns through VIII, then another strange integration at IX? Or had Skin Great Completion been unique to Skin? He did not know.

The uncertainty excited him more than certainty would have. Joe folded the pages closed and looked toward the winter light coming through the window. His Skin had reached the highest state Blood Energy could currently produce. That was enough. The next experiment lay deeper. Muscle.
