Joe had no intention of testing defensive improvement by repeatedly cutting himself. Plenty of guards tested toughness and conditioning. Joe rented a private practice room near the western training district on an evening when rain had reduced street traffic to almost nothing. The room was plain and familiar: packed-earth floor, thick wooden support posts, one narrow shuttered window, a wall rack for staffs and padded training clubs, and the permanent smell of dust and old sweat that no amount of scrubbing seemed capable of removing. Water tapped against the roof while Joe arranged his equipment.

He did not need laboratory precision. He needed consistency. Same padded striking weight. Same short release distance. Same area of the arm. Same state of rest. Same amount of Blood Energy circulating before the test. Then a separate friction test using the same coarse hemp cloth under the same pressure, and finally recovery time from mild redness or bruising. Nothing severe. Enough to compare. Joe began conservatively. The first padded impact struck the outer part of his upper arm with a dull thud.

He examined the skin. Nothing visible. The second produced faint redness. The third made the area warm. He stopped. He waited, checked recovery, then repeated the test under the same conditions on another day. The result stayed consistent. The friction test told the same story. Coarse cloth dragged across the forearm under controlled pressure produced far less irritation than Joe remembered from the first completed stage of Skin Tempering.

He did not need to rely only on childhood memory either; years of seeing other practitioners train had given him enough ordinary reference points to understand the scale. The next tempering passed slowly. Joe had already reached the stage where every additional improvement demanded more effort for less obvious return. The first completed Skin layer had changed him enormously. The second repetition had been easy to notice. The third less so.

By the later repetitions, progress showed itself in smaller ways: a patch of tissue near one wrist no longer lagged the other side, the skin over the shoulder handled repeated pressure more evenly, and the transition around the ankle stopped reddening earlier than surrounding areas under the same controlled stress. They were not new abilities. They were weak points disappearing. The later sessions therefore became less dramatic and more meticulous.

Joe would train, recover, then test a small set of comparable regions. If one area irritated more quickly than another, he adjusted future practice. If several regions behaved the same, he moved on rather than forcing unnecessary work. He spent more time observing than tempering now, which felt strange after years when cultivation had meant constant doing. One Effort Equals a Hundred had changed the problem. Effort came easily. What is important is to choose an effort worth multiplying.

If a session produced only exhaustion and no meaningful adaptation, it was bad training. If medicine cost twenty silver and gave almost nothing, it was a bad purchase. If an extra day of rest produced better growth than forcing another session, then resting was part of cultivation rather than an interruption to it. That logic sounded obvious. The martial world did not always behave as if it were.

Edwin's medicine operation expanded at the same time. Late spring rain made the preparation room feel permanently damp despite the heat of the stoves. Workers opened and closed shutters throughout the day depending on the wind. Wet herb bundles arrived beneath waxed covers, and Mira became increasingly strict about inspecting them before storage because one shipment of poorly dried redleaf had nearly ruined an entire shelf the previous year.

Joe was standing near the rear table one afternoon when a worker opened a bundle and frowned.

"Too wet." Mira crossed the room immediately. She pressed two fingers against the cut stem, smelled the bundle, then looked toward Edwin.

"North-road supplier again." Edwin sighed.

"Reject?" Joe stepped closer.

"Not necessarily." Mira looked at him. He pulled one stem apart. The moisture level was higher than usual, but the herb itself remained good.

"Separate it." Edwin frowned.

"Why?"

"Different drying schedule."

"You want another process just for one supplier?"

"For one input condition." Mira understood first.

"The northern farms packed after rain." Joe nodded. Edwin looked between them.

"So?"

"So, treating wetter material exactly like dry material means the inconsistency becomes ours," Joe said.

"The supplier gave us usable herbs. We are the ones pretending the input is identical." Edwin folded his arms.

"You have a talent for making other people's problems become my responsibility." Joe smiled slightly.

"That makes them solvable." Mira laughed. Edwin stared at Joe for a moment, then finally shook his head.

"Fine. Separate the batch." They did. The adjusted drying cycle worked. Two days later, the finished product showed no meaningful difference from the southern supply. Joe found that more satisfying than he expected. It was the same principle as Skin Tempering. Do not demand that every input behave identically. Understand what it was supposed to do, then improve the process around that function. The thought amused him enough that he almost told Edwin. Then decided against it.

Edwin already accused him of turning life into systems. No need to provide additional evidence.
