"Then don't tell her." Simon considered that seriously.

"Good point." Joe did not tell him about the talent. It made no sense to tell Simon or anyone his deepest secret. He spent the rest of the morning testing smaller things. Knife handling. Familiar footwork. Herb sorting. A few basic spear movements from guard training. The pattern remained consistent. A serious effort produced visible refinement, and the insight gained from that effort improved the next one. By noon Joe had also learned another lesson. He could no longer afford to practice lazily.

Before today, ten mediocre repetitions were merely less useful than ten good ones.
