Feats Sentinel — When Humphrey hits a creature with an opportunity attack, its speed drops to 0 for the rest of the turn.
Creatures in his reach provoke opportunity attacks even if they Disengage, and when a creature within 5 feet attacks anyone other than him, he can use his reaction to strike it. Nothing walks past the king to get at someone behind him. Polearm Master — a bonus-action strike with the butt of his glaive, and, crucially, a creature that enters his reach provokes an opportunity attack. Paired with Sentinel, an enemy that steps into his 10-foot reach is hit and stopped dead before it ever arrives.
Heavy Armor Master — nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage against him is reduced by 3. Two Ability Score Improvements spent bringing Strength and Constitution to 20. The Immovable Guardian This is what King Humphrey does on a battlefield, and it's worth spelling out because the pieces interlock: His reach is 10 feet (glaive). Polearm Master means anything stepping into that ring eats an opportunity attack on the way in; Sentinel means that hit drops the intruder's speed to 0.
They arrive, and they stop, exactly where he wants them — one step short of whoever they were trying to reach. If they ignore him and swing at an ally instead, Sentinel lets him punish them for it with a reaction strike. Giant's Might turns him Large for the fight — advantage on Strength, extra damage once per turn, and a bigger body plugging a bigger gap. The wall he makes grows with him.
Fire Rune means a glaive hit doesn't just stop an enemy; it restrains one — held in place and bound there while he turns to the next. Cloud Rune and Runic Shield are his reach-across-the-field saves: peel an attack off a distant ally and fling it onto someone else, or force an attacker who just hit a friend to reroll. Hill Rune lets him shrug off a focused barrage with resistance to ordinary weapons, and the Interception fighting style spends a reaction soaking a hit meant for whoever's beside him.
The result is a stretch of the battlefield roughly twenty feet across that enemies functionally cannot cross and cannot leave, with the king — larger now than when the fight started — planted in the middle of it, unbothered, asking whether everyone behind him is all right. Class Features (Fighter 15 / Rune Knight) Fighting Style: Interception — reaction to reduce damage to a creature within 5 ft by 1d10 + 6.
Second Wind — bonus action, regain 1d10 + 15 HP. Action Surge (1/rest) — one extra action. Extra Attack (2) — three attacks per Attack action. Indomitable (2/rest) — reroll a failed saving throw. Giant's Might (L3) — bonus action, 1 minute: he becomes Large, gains advantage on Strength checks and saves, and once each turn a weapon hit deals an extra 1d8 (raised from 1d6 by Great Stature). Huge is the level-18 capstone (Runic Juggernaut) — noted for when he grows into it.
Great Stature (L10) — permanently taller, and the Giant's Might die is a d8. Runic Shield (L7) — reaction (uses equal to his proficiency bonus per rest) to force an attacker who hits an ally within 60 ft to reroll. Master of Runes (L15) — he can invoke each rune he knows twice per rest.
Runes known (5): Cloud — redirect an attack off an ally onto someone else; Fire — a hit restrains and burns; Hill — resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing when invoked, plus poison resistance; Stone — charm-lock an attacker, and advantage on Insight; Frost — a steady +2 to Strength and Constitution checks and saves while active. Racial Traits (Loxodon) Powerful Build — counts as one size larger for carrying capacity and for pushing, dragging, lifting, and resolving grapples.
Practically immovable in a shove. Natural Armor (unused here — his plate is better). Trunk — 30-ft grasp for lifting, hauling, and manipulation; can grapple or drag with it. Loxodon Serenity — advantage on saves against being charmed or frightened—a king who does not rattle. Keen Smell — noted above; also why Chancellor Stondall makes a point of standing upwind. Equipment Royal Glaive — reach polearm, his primary arm (statted with a +1 enchantment: +12 to hit, 1d10 + 6 slashing; butt-end 1d4 + 6).
Flavor it as a ceremonial poleaxe of House Grey. Royal Plate & Shield — ornate reinforced regalia doing the work of plate armor. Gold-capped tusks and a Powerful-Build trunk as ever-present natural fallbacks (tusk gore/slam), if you want to stat them. Who he is Humphrey Eddington Grey the Third is enormous and old, and the two have settled into each other over a long reign — the third of the Grey line to hold the throne, grandson of a first Humphrey who was larger still.
He wears deep green, the color of good pasture, cuffed with the running-wheat crest of his house; his tusks were capped in gold generations ago and have yellowed since; his eyes are small, dark, and extremely attentive, the eyes of someone who has been lied to before and learned to wait. His patience is measured in reigns. He has held one thousand years of prophecy in mind and can hold it a while longer.
And underneath the gravity is the thing that actually defines him: told that his kingdom's promised hero had arrived as a two-month-old undead creature and that the treasury was gone with it, his first question was not about money or nobility or the throne. It was"Is he going to be all right?" That composure holds under stress of every kind.
When the hero's first public presentation collapsed into chaos — a legendary blade turning on its wielder, the courtyard's awe curdling, crude words hurled across the crowd in the king's own direction — Humphrey simply met his High Priest's eye. The two of them agreed, without a single word, to describe what everyone had just witnessed as something other than a disaster. Nothing about him moves that he has not chosen to move.
That instinct — to put himself between the vulnerable and the harm coming for them, and not move — is the whole build. Humphrey doesn't chase. He plants himself, and the world does not get past him.
