The aphid cow will not willingly attack and has almost no means to defend itself. When frightened, it drifts away at its slow pace, or, if it cannot flee, freezes in place.
It survives entirely on the protection of its keepers. Placid Grazer. The aphid cow is calmest in dim, warm, quiet spaces and grazes contentedly on soft plant growth. Loud noise, rough handling, or open predators end its calm at once (see Bubbling). Bubbling (Honeydew). When kept comfortable — soothed by gentle stroking, a quiet room, and soft song — the aphid cow secretes a trembling, luminous bubble of concentrated plant-sugar essence from its hindquarters.
A handler who spends 10 minutes calming it and succeeds on a DC 10 Wisdom (Animal Handling) or Charisma check harvests one bubble; a fine bubble fetches good coin from a Thornwall confectioner or distiller. Stress, noise, or careless handling shuts down production for 24 hours. Actions Feeble Kick. Melee Weapon Attack: +2 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 2 (1d4) bludgeoning damage. The aphid cow uses this only when cornered and panicking, and would always rather drift away.
Origin The aphid cow is not a natural animal — or wasn't. The story handed down, and it has the worn, too-tidy shape of a story told for centuries, is that an ordinary garden aphid was enlarged by a druid's spell hundreds of years ago, and a wizard, seeing where that could go, laid Permanence over the work so the size would hold and breed true. Everything walking a shed floor today descends from that one altered insect. The wild form is still out there, still ankle-high and unremarkable, eating someone's roses.

They raised the first great herd together until a falling-out no one now agrees on split the partnership for good. Each took half the herd and walked off to build a rival confectionery house on it, and those two houses are still at it — still competing, still trading on aphid essence, still, by most accounts, not speaking.
The animal that sweetens half the kingdom's harvest owes its existence to a spell held in place out of ambition and a feud held in place out of spite. Ecology & Behavior What it is. A four-foot domestic aphid — a soft, barrel-bodied insect on six thin legs, with long sweeping antennae and the drifting, unhurried carriage of an animal that has never once had to be anywhere quickly. The farmed breed is white with black spots.
It is placid to the point of helplessness, and that helplessness is the whole point: everything about the aphid cow assumes something else is doing the worrying for it. Diet. A grazer. It feeds on soft plant growth and takes in the plant's natural sugars as it does, and those sugars are the raw stock for everything the farm actually wants from it. Grass in, essence out. The bubble. This is the reason the animal exists in domestication.
Kept comfortable, an aphid cow produces bubbling — a bead of luminous, trembling sugar-essence that swells at its hindquarters and is drawn off by hand. The trick is entirely one of comfort. A keeper plays it a soft, soothing tune, strokes it slowly with both hands, and murmurs a steady stream of endearments, and the animal, content and unbothered, obliges. A stressed aphid gives nothing.
The essence goes to Thornwall confectioners for harvest sweets and to distillers under standing contract; it is one of the herbivore kingdom's staple sources of sugar. How it's farmed. The keepers are the mammal-folk — the cattle-people of the herbivore kingdom — and they keep aphid cows in exactly the arrangement ants keep aphids: shelter the herd, guard it from everything that would eat it, and draw off the sweet it produces in return.
There is a joke buried in this that the world does not notice it is telling, which is that here the cows are the people and the aphids are the herd, and a grown bull will stand in a dim shed with both hands on a giant insect, singing to it, calling it a good baby, coaxing out the sugar. It is husbandry, and it is also, unmistakably, courtship. Housing.
Aphid cows are kept in long, low sheds — carefully ventilated but shaded, the interior dim and warm and quiet, because the herd produces best when nothing disturbs it. A well-run shed is a place of deliberate calm. Reproduction. The herds breed fast and breed true, throwing live young without any need for a mate, so a herd is effectively a line of near-copies descended from a founding animal. A keeper's problem is rarely getting more aphid cows; it is culling, feeding, and above all protecting the ones already had.
This is what makes a single stable farm able to underwrite a real share of a kingdom's sugar. (Extrapolated from real aphid biology — flag if you'd rather they lay eggs or need pairing.) Defenceless, and hunted for it. A cow-sized bag of sugar-water that cannot run and cannot fight is a temptation to everything in the treeline.
Farms answer with high, reinforced fencing and, where they can afford it, a low-grade electrical enchantment bought from the Order — enough to frighten off a night-raider, not enough to harm the stock. It works until something clever comes along: cknolls and worse have been known to go through the fence anyway and hit the aphid sheds first and hardest, because the sheds are where the easy, motionless meat is. Standing in the world. The aphid cow is livestock, in a kingdom of herbivores.
Nothing here is raised to be eaten; the thought would not occur to anyone. The few animals the kingdom keeps — the aphid cow for its sugar essence, the giant silkworm for its thread — are valued entirely for what they make, tended across a full lifetime.
