Chương 29: The Leak

The rumor escaped the sanctuary before noon. Not through the great gates. Not through some priest foolish enough to speak too quickly, nor through a College mage arrogant enough to believe a secret remains a secret just because it is written in small script on a sealed tablet. It escaped through the places dirty truths always escape from. A servant reassigned to a different wing without explanation. A guard moved away from the corridor of five.
A ritual physician told too quickly to prepare five doses instead of four. A young scribe who saw part of a report before being ordered not to have seen it. A kitchen valet who heard an acolyte crying in a storage room after poorly enduring a memory-wipe spell. Taken alone, none of it said everything. Taken together, it was enough. By the third hour after training, somewhere in Aurelis's Fourth Ring, a bread seller told a customer there had been five summoned, not four.
By the fourth hour, near the incense markets of the Second Ring, people were already whispering that the fifth had not received a proper blessing. By the fifth, in a tavern reserved for College apprentices, someone used the words: interrupted reading. By the sixth, in the High City, a young noble from the Circle of Roads wrote in a private letter: They are hiding a failed hero. It was not the truth yet. It was already close enough to become dangerous. Zayn learned it from Jonah.
Which somehow made the news even more irritating. They had just left the training court after the third phase. Officially, the morning was over. Unofficially, nothing was really finished. Mira had kept her cutting silence. Lena still looked at Zayn now and then as if Elias's "thank you" after the interception continued to bother her. Elias was moving with that stable fatigue of people who would like to collapse, but know others are still looking at them.
Jonah, meanwhile, came carrying the rumor like it was already in his hands. Not literally. His face was enough.
"Great news," he said as he joined them in the inner corridor.
"We're famous." Lena frowned.
"What?"
"Not us. Well, yes, us. But mostly him." His gaze landed on Zayn. Not mean. Not surprised, either. Almost blasé at the idea that every problem always gathered around the same point. Zayn immediately felt something tighten in his stomach. Not pure fear. Calculation. What leaked? How far did it spread? Who knows what? What does it change for me? Even now, his first question was not: Do they know who I really am? It was: How does this change the situation?
"Speak normally," said Mira. Jonah ran a hand through his still sweat-damp hair.
"The servants are talking. The guards too. Someone outside already knows there's a fifth summoned. Not just some assistant. Not just a counting mistake. A fifth." Silence dropped all at once. Lena went a little pale. Elias immediately looked toward both ends of the corridor, as if the rumor might physically come in through them in the form of a knife. Zayn, on the other hand, remained still. The word fifth almost made him smile. Almost. Not because it was funny.
Because there was in that rumor a twisted sort of recognition he should have hated entirely. People were no longer saying only anomaly. They were not saying Demon King Candidate yet. They were saying fifth summoned. So he already existed in the mouth of the world. Even badly. Even hidden. Even as a problem. That was dangerous. And part of him liked it. That part disgusted him less quickly than it should have. Mira looked at him. Of course she did.
"What exactly leaked?" Elias asked. Jonah answered more quietly.
"Five summoned. Four recognized heroes. One fifth with an interrupted reading. Some say he has no power. Others say his soul is too weak. No title. No details about the galleries. Not yet." Not yet. Those two words lingered longer than the rest. Lena exhaled.
"We need to tell Maelor."
"You really think he doesn't already know?" Jonah asked. As if to prove him right, two College mages appeared at the end of the corridor. Not out of breath. You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story. Not panicked. Too quick not to be, on the inside.
"The Grand Archivist requests your presence. Immediately." Zayn looked at the others. None of them needed to ask why. The rumor had risen faster than they had. Maelor did not receive them in a debate chamber. A pleasant surprise. He led them up through a series of narrow stairways to a high gallery overlooking the outside of the Second Ring. Not a public terrace. An observation walkway protected by sanctified glass panels, invisible from the streets below. From there, Aurelis opened itself.
And for the first time since the summoning, Zayn truly saw the city. Not just corridors, halls, stained glass. The city. Concentric rings falling away toward the people below. Pale rooftops. Bridges. Courtyards. Markets packed tight like living veins. Tiny figures moving across plazas. Guards at the inner gates. White-and-gold banners of the Glass Sun. Farther out, beyond the noble rings, the darker mass of the Civil City, with its smoke, its shouting, its disorderly motion.
And beneath it all, not visible but present, a sound. Not loud. A murmur in the original sense. The voice of a city beginning to chew on information. Maelor placed both hands on the railing.
"The leak is confirmed." No one spoke.
"It is still incomplete." He kept his eyes on the city.
"That is what makes it dangerous." Jonah gave a dry laugh.
"I would have thought the problem was that it was true."
"A complete truth is difficult to control. An incomplete truth is impossible to stop. Everyone adds what suits them." Zayn was still looking at Aurelis. Somewhere down there, people who had never seen him were already imagining him. Failed hero. Bad omen. Ritual mistake. Hidden weapon. Poor boy humiliated by priests. Monster being covered up. All those versions were going to run faster than he could. Mira asked, "Who talked?"
"Several minor sources. None sufficient on their own to explain the spread."
"So someone organized the leak." Maelor finally turned toward her.
"Yes." Short. Sharp. Lena clenched her fingers.
"To force what?" This time, the woman from the Crown answered. Zayn had not heard her arrive. She stood in the shadow of a side arch, dark cloak embroidered with silver, two guards behind her. She had the face of someone whose morning had been half-ripped away by a crisis that ought to have waited until afternoon.
"A public decision." She stepped forward.
"As long as the fifth summoned remained unknown, we could delay. Now his absence itself will become proof. If he never appears, the rumors will grow. If he appears too late, they will already have chosen his face for him." Her gaze settled on Zayn.
"So we must give them a version before they invent a better one." Zayn almost laughed. Not because she was wrong. Because he understood too well. They were not going to tell the truth. They were going to distribute a lie solid enough to prevent others from making a worse one. Very human. Very royal. Very cleanly vile. Elias asked, "What version?" The Crown's representative answered without hesitation.
"A restricted presentation. Not to the people. Not yet. To the elites who will then circulate the official reading." Jonah folded his arms.
"So we become display objects."
"You became that the instant you were summoned." That answer cut through even his sarcasm for a second. She went on:"The four recognized heroes will be presented as the pillars of the new cycle. The fifth summoned will be presented as a case of delayed stabilization under joint authority of the College and the Crown." Zayn slowly turned his head toward her.
"Delayed stabilization."
"That is better than 'living error.'" He could not really argue with that. Maelor added, "Your title must not be mentioned. Your ability must not be mentioned either. Nor your soul strength." Mira glanced briefly at Zayn.
"And if they ask?"
"They will ask," said the woman from the Crown. Then:"That is why the presentation will be controlled." Lena had not taken her eyes off Zayn.
"And him? Do we ask anything of him, or does he just serve as silence between the lines?" The question surprised even Zayn. Not because it was sharp. Because it was right. The Crown's representative turned a measured gaze on Lena.
"He must remain calm, answer little, avoid provoking anyone, and above all not try to appear mysterious." Jonah snorted.
"So the opposite of his social instincts."
"Jonah," said Elias.
"What? It's true." Zayn should have answered. A barb. A bite. He did not. Because he was still looking at the city. Down there, the world was beginning to speak of him without knowing him. And a dark part of his mind, once again, was already trying to work out how to use that version of himself before it devoured him. Failed hero. The term could kill. But it could also hide. No one stays suspicious for long of an apparent failure, so long as he remains humiliated enough to seem harmless. There it was. The thought.
Cold. Immediate. The right wrong direction. Zayn could almost feel the Throne, somewhere far behind his own system, smiling in a room that did not exist. Mira was still watching him. He noticed too late. She had not heard his thoughts. But she had seen the moment his expression stopped being only tense and became calculating. Maelor tapped the railing once with his finger.
"There is something else." Of course there was. Bad news never arrives alone when institutions arrange it in order of presentation.
"The leak does not mention the galleries, but it has already reached the Circles. The Ashes are using the information to argue that the sanctuary is concealing a danger. The Clergy wants to reclaim control of the narrative. The Crown wants to avoid a scandal before the official announcement of the cycle." Lena murmured, "And the College?" Maelor answered without blinking.
"The College wants time." At least he remained himself. The Crown's representative turned to the five summoned.
"The presentation will take place tomorrow. Restricted circle. No more than a hundred people. Major nobles, officers, high priests, learned representatives, delegates of the Seven Circles." Jonah gave a humorless smile.
"Restricted. Of course. A modest hundred snakes. Very intimate."
"It is that or the rumor alone." No one replied. Because this time, even Jonah did not have a better immediate option. Zayn lowered his eyes to the rooftops below. Tomorrow. A hall full of important people. Four heroes presented as pillars. Him presented as a delay, a problem, a case of deferred stabilization. He should have hated the humiliation. He did hate it. But part of him saw something else. A hall full of soul strengths. Nobles. Officers. Mages. Priests. Values. Hierarchies made visible.
Power relations rendered almost numerical under his gaze. Disgust immediately rose in him. Not fast enough. Because the curiosity was already there. He wondered how much the woman from the Crown was worth. How much Maelor was worth. How much an archbishop was worth. How much the head of the Circle of Ashes was worth. The thought was not: I could kill them. Not yet. It was worse in its quietness. I could finally see their true weight. Mira said suddenly, "He must not be placed too far from us."
Everyone looked at her. Even Zayn. She continued, calm as ever:"If you place him apart, you confirm the rumors. If you place him too close to the center, you create a provocation. He has to be visible as the fifth summoned, but not presented as a fifth hero." The Crown's representative studied her.
"You already think like a diplomat."
"No. I think like someone who knows that bad placement can become evidence." Not bad. Very not bad. Elias nodded.
"She's right." Of course he did. The Crown signaled one of her guards to note it down. And Zayn felt a familiar irritation rise. Even when handling his public appearance, the others found the right structure before he did. Mira with the reading. Elias with the balance. Lena with the human angle. Jonah with the suspicion. And him? He was looking at the city and already imagining the soul values of the powerful. He could have laughed. He did not. The meeting ended quickly after that.
Not because everything had been settled. Because the powerful had decided what could still be decided before tomorrow, and the rest would be improvised with enough confidence to be called strategy. They were escorted back toward the corridor of five. This time, the city seemed to follow them behind the walls. The sound of the rumor was not audible here, but it had changed the texture of the air. Before, the sanctuary contained a secret. Now, it contained something already slipping through its fingers.
Halfway back, a young servant passed near them carrying a tray of vials. He looked up for a fraction of a second. Too long at Elias. With admiration. Then at Lena. With softness. At Mira and Jonah. With wary respect. And finally at Zayn. There, something changed. Not terror. Curiosity. Brief. Poorly hidden. The boy immediately looked away and quickened his pace. Zayn remained still for half a second. There. That was the first time. Not a mage. Not a priest. Not a noble. A simple servant.
Someone who had heard enough to look at him differently without knowing why. Zayn felt a dark warmth beneath his collar. The mark. One broken line. Six remaining. The world was beginning to look. And what disturbed him most was not the exposure. It was that he had waited for this all his life, in one form or another, and was now discovering that even this—even as a problem, even as a possible mistake—the gaze of others still had a taste. A bad taste. But a taste all the same.
