Cold was the first thing. Not the light. Not the voices. Not even the fear. The cold. A smooth kind of cold, almost clean, rising against his palm as if the stone beneath him had never known mud, dust, or any ordinary life. The cold of a temple. Of a chamber kept pure. Of a place where something irreversible happens. Then came the sounds. A vast exhale. Hundreds of held breaths. The rustle of heavy garments. The faint creak of armor being deliberately kept still. A muffled voice somewhere above, quickly silenced.
And behind all of it... expectation. Zayn opened his eyes. He did not understand at first what he was looking at. Above him stretched a vault so high it seemed to support an artificial sky. Translucent arches, veined with gold and white, converged toward a central disc suspended in the air—immense, blazing, like a sun trapped behind layers of sacred glass. The light fell from there. Pure. Vertical. Almost accusatory. Zayn inhaled sharply and pushed himself upright.
The slab beneath him was engraved with interlocking circles, runic lines, symbols he did not recognize, all pulsing faintly like veins of light beneath the stone. He was not alone. There were five of them. No more. Five figures arranged on the great ritual circle. Lena was to his left, still half seated, one hand braced against the floor, the other clenched against her chest. Her pale eyes swept over the place too quickly, as if her mind still refused to accept that any of this was real.
Farther off, Jonah was already back on one knee. He was cursing under his breath—not loudly, but enough for Zayn to immediately recognize that rough, familiar way he had of trying to make a situation feel more concrete by treating it like a problem to solve. Across from him, Mira stood motionless. Already on her feet. Naturally straight-backed. Cold gaze. Jaw set only as tightly as necessary.
She was studying the vault, the pillars, the knights around them, the possible exits, the blind spots, as if she were dissecting the hall instead of enduring it. And at the exact center of the circle, beneath the brightest point of the dome, Elias had just risen to his feet. Of course he had. Even torn from his world. Even thrown into the middle of an impossible sanctuary. Even without explanation. He already looked as though he belonged there. Not comfortable. Not calm. But solid. That was worse.
Zayn felt something dry shift in his chest. Not hatred. Not yet. Just that familiar tightening. That immediate irritation people like Elias always provoked. The kind people followed without thinking. Lena turned her head and saw him. Her eyes widened.
"... Zayn?" Her voice was smaller than usual. He did not answer right away. Not because he did not know what to say. Because he refused to give this scene even one word too many. Around them, semicircular tiers climbed high into the hall, crowded with people. Priests dressed in white and gold. Mages in deep blue robes. Knights in ceremonial armor. Nobles, scribes, servants, officers. An entire audience gathered to witness their arrival. The five summoned stood at the center of it all. Exposed. Expected. Judged.
Zayn understood it immediately: this was not an accident. Not a failed experiment. Not a discreet abduction. They had been called. Prepared. Staged. A man began descending the central steps. Old, tall, terribly thin. His white robes were edged with spun glass and golden embroidery that reflected the light of the dome. His face had the austere beauty sometimes seen in religious statues, except that in him, exhaustion still lived beneath the skin.
Another man walked behind him, broader, dressed in midnight blue, his sleeves threaded with geometric runes embroidered in silver. Not a priest. A mage. A scholar. Someone who looked at the five summoned not as miracles, but as phenomena. The old man stopped at the edge of the great circle. When he spoke, his voice filled the entire hall.
"Children from beyond the veil... welcome to Aurelis." No one answered. The word children did something unpleasant to Zayn's stomach. The man continued.
"I am Seradion, Archbishop of the Sun of Glass. At my side stands Maelor, Grand Archivist of the College of Arches." The mage inclined his head slightly, without smiling.
"You have been called into our world in a time of absolute necessity." The silence sharpened. The archbishop lifted his eyes toward the great luminous disc above them. If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
"The Black Cycle has begun anew. In the east, the Demonic Throne has stirred. The ancient signs have returned. The domains of the black continent are in motion. Borders grow tense. And by the ancient law of this world... when the shadow of the Demon King rises, heroes must be summoned." The word fell into the hall with the weight of a prayer. Heroes. A nearly physical wave passed through the tiers. Relief. Faith. Fervor. Fear as well. A fear so old it had learned how to dress itself as hope.
Zayn looked at the crowd. They did not see five teenagers ripped away from their lives. They saw answers. Weapons. Saviors. Symbols. The mage, Maelor, stepped forward.
"The compatibility of your souls with the laws of this world will now be recognized. Your titles will be granted. Your unique skills will manifest according to your deepest nature." The word compatibility caught somewhere in Zayn's mind. Deepest nature. He did not like that. Not at all. The great stone circle beneath them pulsed. Once. Then a second time. The symbols lit up in slow spirals. The air changed. Denser. Drier. As though the entire hall were closing around the ritual. Maelor raised a hand.
"Step into the center when your name is called. Do not resist the reading." For a moment, no one moved. Then Elias did what someone had to do. He stepped forward. Without theatrical hesitation. Without looking around. Without trying to perform. He took his place beneath the brightest point of the dome. The stone lit beneath his feet. Lines of gold rose around him in a circle.
A translucent window appeared before his face, visible only to him, while a larger projection formed above the ritual for the officiants and the upper tiers. Maelor read in a clear voice:"Name: Elias Ward. Race: Human." A stronger pulse ran through the hall. Then:"Recognized Title: Hero Candidate." This time, the crowd exhaled in a single motion. As though something enormous had just been confirmed. But Maelor was not finished. His gaze fixed on the projection.
"Recognized Unique Skill: Standard of Dawn." Murmurs rose among the knights. Even some of the priests had gone pale with emotion. Elias remained upright. A brief tension passed through his right hand, then he returned to the circle without saying anything dramatic. Of course he did. Lena went next. She hesitated for half a second before stepping into the light, but she went. When the ritual read her, the radiance around her seemed different. Softer. More sheltering.
"Name: Lena Hart. Race: Human. Recognized Title: Heroine Candidate. Recognized Unique Skill: Sanctuary Thread." Something shifted in the tiers. A gentler emotion. Less warlike. Lena stepped back, visibly shaken, but her first instinct was to look at the others. To check who was still standing. Who was hurt. Who needed someone to speak to them. Even here. Even now. Zayn looked away. Jonah was third. The light around him was denser. Harder.
As though it refused to radiate outward and instead compressed itself into a solid mass.
"Name: Jonah Price. Race: Human. Recognized Title: Hero Candidate. Recognized Unique Skill: Lineholder." Jonah clenched his jaw. Not pleased. Not reassured. Just... ready to fight the word itself if he had to. Mira came next. Not one step too many. Not one useless glance. The ritual passed through her like a cold blade.
"Name: Mira Calder. Race: Human. Recognized Title: Heroine Candidate. Recognized Unique Skill: Severance Sight." This time, the strongest reactions did not come from the priests. They came from the mages. The College had recognized something important in that power. Something useful. Rare. Potentially dangerous. Mira returned without a word. Only he remained. The circle suddenly felt larger. Emptier. Zayn felt the gazes slide toward him like threads. Lena. Jonah. Mira. Elias. And behind them, the entire hall.
His name had not yet been spoken, but he already knew this moment would be different. He did not know why. Only that he knew.
"Zayn." No last name. Just that. He stepped forward. One step. Then another. The light of the dome fell on him like physical pressure. Not a blessing. An inspection. The cold of the stone climbed into his legs. When he reached the center, nothing happened immediately. That brief delay alone was enough to tighten the entire hall. Maelor lifted his chin ever so slightly. A rune at the edge of the circle flickered. Then the reading began. A window appeared before Zayn's eyes. Sharper than expected. Darker too.
Name: Zayn Race: Human The text stopped there. The silence became absolute. Zayn felt the back of his neck tighten. Around the circle, several mages exchanged a very brief glance. One priest signaled to another. A knight unconsciously shifted his hand closer to the hilt of his weapon. The next word took too long. Far too long. Then at last, the letters began to form. Zayn saw the title start to write itself. He did not have time to read it. The projection above the circle suddenly distorted.
The golden light tore open like fabric burning from the inside. A breath ran through the hall. Maelor stepped forward.
"Stabilize the reading." Too late. The primary rune beneath Zayn's feet blackened for a fraction of a second. Then a sensation rose from the floor. Not light. Not heat. Not holiness. Something else. Something ancient. Something deep. As though beneath the sanctuary, beneath the city, beneath the continent itself, an authority older than their prayers had just turned its gaze toward him. The world seemed to bend. Not upward. Eastward. Toward a distance he could not see, but that recognized him.
And this time, his own window rewrote itself completely. Without hesitation. Without wavering. In black. Name: Zayn Race: Human Title: Demon King Candidate Soul Strength: Weak Unique Skill: The Seven Downfalls Beneath that final line appeared a symbol no one else had received. A black lock. Heavy. Perfectly sealed. Crossed by seven dark lines, like seven seals driven into a door no one should ever have approached. Zayn's breath stopped. He stared at the words. Read them again. They did not change.
Around him, the ritual finally broke into chaos.
"Cut the projection!"
"Seal the loop!"
"Pull back the officiants!"
"It's an interference—""No, it's a recognition!"
"Silence!" The last order, the archbishop's, cracked through the hall like a blade. But even he had lost control of part of his face. Zayn looked up. The public projection above the circle had become unreadable. Fragments of letters twisted across it before being swallowed by a white light that had grown too bright. The title had not been read aloud. Not yet. But something had been seen. Something serious enough that even the crowd understood the miracle had gone wrong. A murmur of fear rose from the tiers.
Not loud. Worse. Restrained. The knights had lowered their lances. The mages of the College held runic containment rings around the circle at arm's length. Two priests were already backing away as if the purity of the place had been tainted. Lena took a step.
"Zayn—" Jonah caught her wrist. Not roughly. Instinctively. Mira, meanwhile, never took her eyes off him. Not the ritual. Not the mages. Him. As if she needed nothing else to understand that something had happened exactly where he stood. Elias stepped forward by half a pace, without aggression.
"No one move," he said, his voice calm but firm. Of course. He still had to be the one holding the scene together. Zayn barely looked at him. He could no longer hear the hall properly. The only sound that mattered was his own heartbeat. And beneath that sound, deeper still, almost imagined... a resonance. Distant. Immense. Like an empty throne in an endless night answering him, if only for an instant. His window remained open before him. Stable. Perfectly stable. Demon King Candidate. Not a flawed hero.
Not a mistake. Not an incomplete reading. A candidate. Something twisted in his stomach. Not just fear. Another horror. More intimate. Because somewhere deep inside him, beneath the shock, beneath the refusal, beneath the panic, a thought had already begun to form. What if this wasn't a mistake? He tried to crush it at once. He failed. Archbishop Seradion descended to the exact edge of the circle, closer than anyone else. His eyes fixed on Zayn with terrible intensity. Not hatred. Not yet. Something more dangerous.
The immediate awareness that a problem had just entered his world beneath cheers meant for its saviors.
"Lower the veil," he ordered in a bloodless voice. Above the dome, several panels of sacred glass slowly slid across one another, cutting off part of the ritual projection from the view of the upper tiers. Too late to stop the rumor. Early enough to smother the truth. Grand Archivist Maelor approached as well. He looked at Zayn, then at the disturbance in the circle, then back at Zayn. His lips moved at first without sound. When he finally spoke, it was low enough that only the front ranks of the ritual could hear.
"The public title is suspended." Suspended. Not denied. Not refuted. Suspended. Lena went pale. Jonah cursed under his breath. Mira did not move. Elias remained tense, ready to intervene if the situation broke apart. Zayn still had his eyes on his window. On that lock. On those seven black lines. On that impossible word. The whole world had waited for heroes. It had received four. And something else. The light of the Sun of Glass continued to fall over him.
But for the first time since he had opened his eyes in that sanctuary, Zayn felt the cold certainty that it did not recognize him as one of the others. Then his window blinked. A single line appeared, brief, black, utterly devoid of warmth. [Recognition interrupted.] The text vanished at once. And the chapter of the miracle ended in a silence that had nothing sacred left in it.
