The return should have been simpler. They had the evidence. The body. The black wax. The parchment. The third node. The now unmistakable idea, impossible to bury completely anymore, that a human hand had worked through the galleries before they arrived. That should have been enough to drive their march upward. Instead, everything became heavier. Because the danger was no longer only around them. It had returned to the middle of the group.
They moved in the same order as after the infiltrator's death, but it was no longer exactly the same formation. Something had tightened without being announced. Elias in front, always. Voss moving around the group, a little closer to the center than before. Mira at the angle where she could see both the walls and everyone else. Lena near Zayn. Jonah behind, or rather behind him. Not obviously. Just enough to be felt. Zayn noticed it immediately. How could he not? He saw the numbers before the looks.
103 80 75 74 Their mere presence filled the space around him like a constant demonstration of what he was not. And now that he had tasted Envy, there was no innocence left in that perception. The numbers were not neutral. They bit. They compared. They established such a clear hierarchy in his head that it was becoming almost impossible to look at someone without feeling the gap. Especially Elias. Zayn already hated that number the way you hate a light you cannot turn off. The corridor rose in uneven stages.
In some places, the walls returned to the lighter stone of the sanctuary. In others, the older structures reappeared beneath the human repairs like bones beneath skin stretched too thin. The air shifted every few dozen steps, alternating between cold dampness and the dry smell of sacred metal. No one spoke. Until Jonah decided the silence had become too honest for his taste.
"So we're just going to pretend this is normal?" His voice cracked through the corridor without being loud. Elias did not turn around right away.
"Say it clearly."
"With pleasure." Jonah lifted his blade slightly in Zayn's direction without actually pointing it at him.
"He falls alone into lower levels. He comes back alive. He neutralizes a sealed warden he never should've been able to handle by himself. And at the third node, before we even saw the guy hiding there, he throws a piece of metal at exactly the right spot." He paused.
"So no, I'm not going to act like all of this is just… luck." Lena tensed at once.
"Jonah."
"What, Jonah?" He finally looked at her, irritated.
"What do you want me to say? That he keeps tripping his way into success? That if you're enough of a problem, eventually you develop a kind of elegance?" Zayn felt the anger rise immediately. A dirty anger. Easy. Almost comfortable. Good. Better that than the real point. Because Jonah was not entirely wrong.
"If you've got an accusation, make it properly," he snapped. Jonah gave a dry laugh.
"There we go. I don't have an accusation. I've got a hole in what I'm seeing. And I don't like holes when someone's already bleeding in the middle of them." Mira spoke before it could escalate further.
"He's right about one thing." Lena turned sharply toward her.
"You too?"
"I didn't say we had to conclude anything." Her gaze slid toward Zayn.
"I said there's a hole." She did not add more. She did not need to. Because she always put the problem exactly where it became impossible to ignore. Elias finally slowed enough to speak to them without giving up the lead.
"Fine. There's a hole." Jonah crossed his arms over the hilt of his sword.
"Thank you." This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it"And that hole is not getting filled in on a return corridor, after an infiltration, a collapse, a sabotage, and a corpse we're hauling with us." Elias's tone was not hard. It was controlled. The calmer he kept it, the more unbearable Zayn found him. Because Elias did not dominate people by crushing them.
He simply kept dragging them back to the most stable point in the situation, as if the world had handed him an inner center for free while others had to rip theirs out of the mud. Jonah exhaled, annoyed.
"So we wait?"
"We go back up first."
"And then?"
"Then we talk." Mira did not object. Neither did Lena. Even Voss only gave a brief:"Correct." That was it, Zayn thought with a fatigue that was almost nauseating. Even when tension built around him, even when suspicion rose, Elias still managed to hold the group together just enough to prevent an immediate fracture. Once again, he was saving something. Not a life this time. A cohesion. Zayn did not see the number change. But he hated the logic anyway. They kept walking.
After a few minutes, Mira let herself drift back to his pace. Not fully at his side. Just enough for her voice to stay private without becoming intimate.
"You threw the metal too fast." Not an accusation. A surgical observation. Zayn kept his eyes forward.
"Thanks for the report."
"You didn't hear the man."
"No."
"You didn't see him either."
"You don't know that."
"Yes." One word. Dry. Exact. She continued without raising her voice:"Your angle didn't allow a normal read on that hiding place. Not before the sound. Not before he moved." Zayn clenched his jaw slightly.
"And yet I threw."
"Yes." She finally looked at him.
"So you perceived something you should not have been able to perceive under those conditions." There was no point getting angry at her. She did not need cruelty to be dangerous. Lena, walking on his other side, heard enough to step in.
"Maybe he just had the right instinct." Mira answered immediately:"Maybe." Then, after a second:"But that's a lot of maybes all pointing in the same direction." Lena started to reply, stopped, then said more quietly:"Maybe he just changed because he almost died." The word changed hung between them. Mira did not reject it. She filed it away.
"Yes," she said.
"That's also possible." Even worse. Because she always made room for the possibility that made the least noise while still continuing to exist. Zayn said nothing. Not because he had no answer. Because he had too many. And almost all of them buried him deeper. The corridor turned once more, then joined a higher gallery. An old ritual transport conduit, probably, with long metal striations running through the floor as if sealing carts had once passed through there. Voss abruptly raised his fist. Everyone stopped.
Zayn immediately felt why. A presence. Not human this time. Weak, but fast. 5 Then another. 4 And two more farther along. 3 5 Things were crawling through the structures above them, between the beams and the wall cavities. Too discreet to be seen at once in the ordinary gloom. Not for him. The reflex was immediate. Speak. Warn them. This time without overthinking it. But as he was almost opening his mouth, he saw the problem. If he gave the exact position too quickly, Mira would see it. Again. Always.
So he chose the detour. He stared at one precise section of the ceiling a little too intently. Enough for Elias to notice. Elias followed his gaze. Then immediately lifted his spear.
"Above us!" The creatures dropped almost at the same moment. Not ossuary vermin. A kind of bats twisted by ritual residue, with membrane-wings too thick and mouths lined with secondary teeth. They were aiming for the face. Jonah raised his line by pure reflex. Not a full barrier this time, more a local hardening of space in front of him, enough to alter the angle of the first two. Elias skewered one without even breaking stride. Mira cut the second down with a slash through the wing joint.
Lena protected herself by lifting her staff, creating a brief vibration of connection that made the third miss its dive. The fourth came straight at Zayn. 5 He saw it. He even saw the ridiculous thinness of the possible gain. And even then, even in that moment, even with the group around him, even with everything that should have made it a purely tactical instant… a thought still crossed his mind: +0? +1? He hated it almost the moment it was born.
Then he killed the thing with a dagger thrust straight through the belly. The system blinked. [Soul Strength absorbed: +0] Good. To hell with it. No time for more. The last creature tried to climb back into the darkness. Voss pinned it to the wall with a clean, brutal knife throw. Calm returned almost immediately. Jonah looked at the ceiling, then at Zayn, then back at the ceiling.
"That's funny." No one answered.
"The second time." Lena closed her eyes for a second. Mira, meanwhile, said nothing. Which meant she was observing even more than if she had spoken. Jonah continued:"Twice now you've reacted before us to something that wasn't exactly obvious." Zayn wiped his blade on his sleeve.
"You want a miracle or an answer?"
"I want you to stop acting like every question is a personal attack." Ah. That hit harder than he would have liked. Elias stepped in before Zayn could answer with something stupid.
"We're all on edge."
"No," Jonah said, eyes still on Zayn.
"We're not all on edge in the same way." This time, Voss cut it off.
"Later." The captain pulled his knife from the wall.
"If you want to tear each other apart, do it when the ceilings stop trying to eat you." Good line. Very good, actually. So they moved on again. But now the feel of the group had shifted once more. Not openly hostile. Finer than that. Jonah no longer entirely took his eyes off him. Mira had clearly stopped believing in simple instinct. Lena was still defending him, but now he could feel another pain in her too: not just fear for him, but fear of what he was not saying. And Elias… Elias kept going. Simply.
As if the group holding together still mattered more than being right too early about someone. The corridor eventually rose for real, joining a series of more neatly cut steps reinforced by sanctuary arches. The light from the seals was steadier there. The air slightly less dead. They were nearing the ascent. Voss stopped just before the final lock gate. He turned toward them, the infiltrator's body strapped to an improvised litter between two sealing poles.
"When we come out of this, we'll have: a marked body, a seal from the Ash Circle, a validation from the College, a sabotaged route, a reconfigured node, and a fifth summoned who fits nothing simple." His gaze passed over each of them. Then stopped on Zayn for half a second longer than necessary.
"So when we go back up, you speak little. And you let the high chambers choke on what we bring them before adding your feelings to it." Jonah gave a crooked smile.
"You know, sometimes you really do sound reasonable."
"I try to compensate for your age." Lena was not listening anymore. She was looking at Zayn. Not the wound. Not the weapons. Her eyes were looking for something else.
"You still haven't told me what happened down there." The sentence was gentle. That was worse. Zayn turned his face slightly away.
"I did. I fell. I survived."
"That's not what I mean." He knew. Of course he knew. And that was exactly why he answered more coldly:"Then stop asking for something you don't actually want to hear." This time Lena took the hit. Truly. Not because he had been cruel. Because she understood it was not just automatic defensiveness. Something really had shifted down there. And he was already choosing to protect it from her. Mira watched the exchange from the corner of her eye. Jonah too. Elias said nothing.
But Zayn could almost physically feel the moment Elias registered one more fracture line in the group. Fine. At least that. At least the scene was becoming uglier, truer. The lock gate opened. The air from the upper sanctuary slid down to them, drier, cleaner, almost insulting after the depths. They were about to go back up. With evidence. With a corpse. With a sabotage no longer reducible to an incident. And with him, returned from below alive enough to be even more problematic than before.
Before stepping into the stairwell, Voss left them with one last sentence. Not for the whole group. For Maelor, the Clergy, the Crown, the Ash Circle—for everyone above, really. But Zayn felt it most sharply.
"This is no longer a boy being observed," said the captain. His eyes came straight to him.
"It's a variable that evolves." The word slid under Zayn's skin like a cold blade. Not because it was false. Because it was becoming true.
