Z-69 closed his fist around the Red Crystal.
"Not here." The Merchant regarded the endless rows of niches.
"On the contrary. Few places are more appropriate for inheritance than a room full of consequences." Lumina's ears flattened. I hate him.
"I know." Z-69 said. The Merchant spread one gloved hand.
"I am wounded." You do not have a face.
"And yet I persevere." Z-69 remained still. The Merchant's posture shifted, not quite a bow, not quite amusement.
"Very well. If the grave is too honest, we will use a room more suitable for lawyers." The nearest row of nameplates flickered. UNKNOWN UNKNOWN UNKNOWN Then the letters dimmed. Not off. Away. Space folded with the quiet precision of a contract finding a loophole. The Great Ossuary did not vanish. It receded, its walls of dead stretching backward through black glass and pale light until Z-69 seemed to stand behind the structure that held them.
Polished stone became dark wood beneath his boots, old enough to look stolen from a world that still had trees. A table appeared. Long, narrow, and black. A sealed metal packet rested upon it beside a stack of physical documents tied with red thread, a brass recorder, a small black case, and a key shaped like a sliver of burned sunrise. The key was small because it did not need to be large. Its handle bore an ember-shaped symbol, and at its center waited a single word: ASHFALL Lumina limped closer to Z-69's leg.
This place is not inside Crimeria. The Faceless Merchant crossed to the far end of the table and took the chair without pulling it out. One moment he stood. The next he sat. No movement wasted on reality.
"It is adjacent to obligation." Lumina stared at him. That means nothing.
"It means exactly as much as most legal definitions." Z-69 studied the objects on the table.
"John made this."
"John R. purchased it." The Merchant placed both hands on the black surface.
"He arrived after your extraction from the Tower smelling of antiseptic, burnt circuitry, and medical fraud. He had already guessed that Crimeria would classify you before you understood the shape of your own body." His blank face turned toward John's niche beyond the folded room.
"Then he noticed the old doors beneath his feet beginning to open."
"Vault 7-R."
"One of them." The Merchant tapped the sealed packet.
"He did not know the date of his death. He knew its shape." Z-69's fingers tightened around the Red Crystal.
"His wording was characteristically offensive," the Merchant continued.
"I believe the phrase was: 'If I die because one of my sins learns to walk, do not let the government inherit my Master before he learns how to swear at a lawyer.'" Lumina blinked. That sounds like him.
"It was among the more affectionate clauses." Z-69 looked at the packet.
"Why you?"
"Because John R. trusted neither gods nor governments. Nor students, churches, lawyers, doctors, revolutionaries, machines, dead institutions, living institutions, or himself." The Merchant folded his hands.
"Naturally, the most suspicious option became the safest."
"You."
"Me."
"What did he pay?" The featureless mask tilted.
"That is between the dead man and the merchant he insulted for forty-seven minutes before accepting my rates." Lumina's tail flicked. You enjoyed him.
"Most people beg when bargaining with the impossible." The Merchant sounded almost nostalgic.
"John R. negotiated warranty conditions." The brass recorder clicked once. It was not active yet. Only waiting. The packet opened by itself. Red thread loosened, and documents unfolded across the table, clean, white, and far too official for a room that existed nowhere. A name stood at the top of the first page. RAITO Z. ASHFALL Z-69 stared at it. The letters meant nothing. Then too much. Lumina climbed carefully onto the table's edge despite the pain in her leg. Who is that?

"Legally?" The Merchant turned the document toward her. The page expanded. RAITO Z.
ASHFALL REGISTERED UPPER-FLOOR RESEARCH HEIR AGE: TWENTY-FOUR PRIMARY RESIDENCE: FLOOR FOUR FAMILY LINE: ASHFALL PRIVATE RESEARCH TRUST DECLARED PARENT: JOHNATHAN RICHARD ASHFALL MEDICAL STATUS: RESTRICTED BIOMETRIC REVIEW: EXEMPT / SURFACE-EXPOSURE HERITAGE CONDITION MOBILITY CLEARANCE: CONDITIONAL UPPER-FLOOR ACCESS RESEARCH LICENSE: PENDING ACTIVATION CIVIC SOCIAL CLASSIFICATION: UPPER-TIER PRIVATE CITIZEN Lumina read the entries twice before looking at Z-69. That is not you.
"No."
"It is a door," the Merchant said, "through which you may enter rooms that would otherwise require a corpse count." Z-69's attention settled on the declared parent.
"Johnathan Richard Ashfall."
"Yes."
"John's false name." The Merchant remained silent just long enough to make the answer worse.
"No." Lumina's ears lifted. The Merchant touched the name with one gloved finger.
"Johnathan Richard Ashfall was written on the first document that ever claimed him. John R. was the abbreviation he kept after deciding the rest of himself was inconvenient." The folded room became quieter. Z-69 looked again at the page. Johnathan Richard Ashfall. John R. The student. The scientist. The old man with cigarette ash on his coat and three hundred years of crimes hidden behind sarcasm.
"He used his real name for a false identity," Z-69 said.
"Indeed."
"And a false name for his real life." The Merchant possessed no expression, yet still appeared amused.
"Dr. Ashfall considered that extremely funny." Lumina lowered her head and pressed the crystal between her brows briefly against the document. Idiot. Z-69 did not disagree. The Merchant drew out another page.
"Raito Z. Ashfall was constructed with care. A private heir educated through nonstandard tutors. A young researcher with few public appearances. Medical exemption from direct scan review. Prolonged absence, respiratory isolation, and reconstruction after inherited surface-exposure complications."
"Excuses for my body."
"Explanations."
"Lies."
"Useful ones." The Merchant slid the page across the table.
"Z-69 is a designation. Returning Light is a chain dressed as worship. Raito Z. Ashfall is a name that can ride elevators without causing emergency prayers." Lumina glanced at Z-69. He knows too much.
"He is the Faceless Merchant." The Merchant inclined his head.
"I prefer to know exactly enough to remain expensive." Z-69 looked down at the new name. The Z sat in its center like a scar no tailor had bothered to conceal.
"Why keep the Z?" The recorder clicked. John's voice emerged from it.
"Because subtlety is for cowards and bad tax accountants." Lumina startled so hard that her injured leg slipped from the table. Z-69 caught her before she fell. The recorder crackled, and John continued, old, dry, and impossibly alive in the room where he was dead.
"If this message is playing, I am dead, legally dead, convincingly absent, or hiding so well that even I am impressed. Treat me as dead. It saves time." A cough interrupted the recording. Not the device. John. Then his voice moved away from the microphone.
"Damn thing had better be recording. Otherwise, I am haunting the manufacturer." Lumina stared at the brass recorder. Z-69 did not move. The voice entered him without permission. Not like a memory. Worse. Like a conversation continuing after one participant had died.
"Hello, Master." The cracked edge of the Red Crystal pressed into Z-69's palm.
"I considered beginning with an apology," John said.
"Then I remembered apologies are useful only when the injured person can reject them while you remain alive enough to be uncomfortable." A pause followed.
"I have removed that option. So this is not an apology." Smoke crackled faintly through the recorder as John inhaled.
"This is a set of tools. Tools are less dignified than repentance, but they occasionally work." The Merchant said nothing. Lumina lowered herself beside the recorder, stretching the injured leg carefully to one side.
"I prepared this package after you left the Tower," John continued.
"Not immediately. Immediately, I was busy arguing with doctors, security officers, Public Narrative lice, and a fox who had occupied your chest as though she had filed a territorial claim." Lumina looked offended.
"For the record, she was correct." Her ears tilted backward. I know. John's voice softened by a fraction.
"After the Tower, I understood three things. First, Crimeria would attempt to own you because it owns everything it fears slowly enough to label. Second, my old sins were no longer staying buried. Third, I was probably going to die in a manner that made cleanup difficult." Something clicked in the background—a glass, a tool, or perhaps a lighter.
"I did not know the exact shape yet. But old graves have a smell. You learn it after digging enough of them yourself." The recorder fell silent for a moment.
"I should have told you more while I was alive. I did not because I feared you would look at me exactly as you should have." Then, almost angrily:"Do not waste time being generous to me about that. It was cowardice wearing tactical clothing." Lumina lowered her gaze. The Merchant touched the packet, and a new section unfolded in time with John's voice. ASSET TRANSFER PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: RAITO Z.
ASHFALL ASSOCIATED IDENTITY: Z-69 / DISPUTED PERSONHOOD PROTECTED PENDING ACTIVE REVIEW PROTECTIVE TRUST: ASHFALL PRIVATE RESEARCH TRUST EXECUTION METHOD: POSTHUMOUS NON-CIVIC ESCROW CIVIC CHALLENGE DELAY: ACTIVE"You now possess a legal name that will not immediately trigger asset seizure, religious custody, military quarantine, Research Affairs dissection, or three different kinds of prayer request." A beat.
"It will still trigger suspicion. If it does not, assume everyone present is incompetent or preparing to shoot you." The first asset entry brightened. ASHFALL ESTATE LOCATION: CRIMERIA — FLOOR FOUR STATUS: PRIVATE RESIDENCE / RESEARCH HERITAGE PROPERTY OCCUPANCY RIGHTS: TRANSFERRED A house rose above the table. Not a safehouse hidden behind rusted walls and false doors. A residence. Tall, narrow, and elegant, built along an upper-floor avenue where even the projected air looked cleaner.
Its windows overlooked a simulated rain garden. No quarantine marks scarred the exterior. No public ration line crossed the street. No security plates were visible. It looked almost peaceful. Z-69 distrusted it immediately.
"Ashfall Estate is on Floor Four," John said.
"Yes, Floor Four. Try not to look as though you are planning to bite the furniture when you arrive." Lumina studied the house. It has windows.
"They are not real windows," Z-69 said. Still windows.
"The front rooms are respectable," John continued.
"The upper library is respectable if no one checks behind the seventh shelf. The basement is illegal in seven jurisdictions, two religions, and one obsolete architectural code. Use the basement." The next section opened. CREDIT ACCOUNTS ASHFALL TRUST LIQUID HOLDINGS: TRANSFERRED SUPPLEMENTAL BLACK RESERVE: UNDECLARED SURFACE EXPEDITION FUND: ACTIVE The balance appeared. Lumina stared at it. Is that a large number?
"Large enough to make honest men nervous," the Merchant said.
"Fortunately, none are involved." John's recording overlapped him.
"If Lumina asks whether that is a lot of money, the answer is yes. If you ask whether it is enough to buy your way through Crimeria, the answer is no. No amount of money purchases the whole city. It merely buys better liars." More categories appeared. MEDICAL RESERVE LEGAL DEFENSE RESEARCH MATERIALS SURFACE EQUIPMENT INFORMATION PURCHASES EMERGENCY BRIBES NOTE: DO NOT SPEND ALL OF IT ON ONE POLITICAL DISASTER Lumina narrowed her eyes. He made a category for bribes.
"Do not look morally superior," John's recording replied.
"You live in Crimeria." The Merchant's shoulders shifted. Almost a laugh. Then the final set of files opened. JOHN R.
