The false Valdora route was still holding. Barely. John's trace device counted down on the central console while the buried workshop hummed around it. FALSE ROUTE STABILIZED WORKSHOP LOCATION: HIDDEN ARCHIVE WATCH TRACE: 36% ROUTE CORRECTION WINDOW: 00: 17: 52 Seventeen minutes before Level Four realized it had been chasing a dead storm. Beside the timer, the Dorian mirror cube pulsed. Small. Cracked. Important.
DORIAN KRELL TRANSFER MIRROR — PARTIAL COPY INTEGRITY: 47% FINAL FORWARD: LEVEL 4 CIVIC INTEGRATION OFFICE SUB-ROUTE: BIO-RESONANT WITNESS HOLD BODY STATUS AT HANDOFF: ALIVE / CRITICAL COGNITIVE STATUS: RESPONSIVE TO REPORT STIMULUS CURRENT LOCATION: ENCRYPTED NEXT KEY REQUIRED: LEVEL 4 INTERNAL NODE OR E-247 COUNTER-RECORD Alive. Critical. Responsive. Not saved. Dorian had not disappeared. He had been placed somewhere the system could legally pretend he did not exist.
Z-69 read the report once more before the cube dimmed. A lock clicked behind him. Lumina's fur rose. John stood before a reinforced freezer built into the far wall. Frost covered its hinges. Cooling lines had been welded across the casing in crooked layers, more surgical scar than repair. Warnings covered the metal.
BIOHAZARD SENSORY MUTATION ACTIVE CORRUPTION ADAPTATION SAMPLE DO NOT EXPOSE TO SOUND DO NOT EXPOSE TO LIGHT BURSTS DO NOT EXPOSE TO PRAYER FREQUENCIES Below them, in John's handwriting: DO NOT HUM NEAR THIS THING And beneath that: YES, THAT MEANS YOU, FUTURE ME Lumina stared at him. You wrote yourself a warning and still brought us here.
"I wrote it because I knew I would." That is worse.
"Usually." John placed his palm against the lock. The freezer recognized him reluctantly. SPECIMEN: U-022 DESIGNATION: THE EYELESS SINGER RECOVERY STATUS: RECENT FULL STUDY: NOT PERFORMED BIO-MORPHIC RESIDUE: PRESERVED Z-69 stepped closer. Coolant pulsed behind the walls. Old pumps trembled beneath the floor. Something inside the freezer felt as though it were still listening. Lumina's tail lowered. The creature from Level Two. Memory returned before Z-69 could stop it. A narrow corridor under red emergency lights.
John gripping his arm. Don't speak. Don't breathe loudly. Then a shape stepping out of the darkness. Too tall. Too thin. Pale tissue stretched over bones from several different bodies. No eyes. No nose. Only a mouth pulled too wide. A child-soft voice drifting through the corridor. You laughed, didn't you? Z-69's fingers curled.
"It was singing," Lumina whispered. John's jaw tightened.
"Something inside it remembered sound after meaning was gone." Lumina approached the freezer. Was it human?
"I don't know." Her eyes narrowed. John exhaled.
"That is not evasion. Its records were damaged. Some tissue resembled human sensory nerves. Other sections did not. Parts may have been cultivated under Corruption pressure." He looked at the frost-covered casing.
"Some may have come from multiple donors." Lumina went still. You did not create it.
"No." But someone did. John said nothing. If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. The countdown continued. 00: 16: 58 Z-69 looked at the freezer.
"You kept the corpse."
"I kept enough tissue to understand its adaptation." Lumina turned toward him. And Z-69 already absorbed part of it.
"I took the remaining energy after it died," Z-69 said.
"Not the flesh." That distinction is not comforting.
"It was not intended to be." John activated the scan panel. A corrupted anatomical image appeared. Thin tendons branched around U-022's skull, ribs, spine, and shoulders like roots.
"Acoustic tendon arrays," John said.
"Pressure-sensitive nerve bundles. It did not hear through ears. Its entire body read vibration through air, metal, flesh, and bone." The display changed. Two scans of Z-69 overlapped. Most of his body returned the usual results. INCONCLUSIVE UNSCANNABLE DATA REJECTED Along his spine and shoulder blades, however, faint branching patterns flickered. John pointed at them.
"You rejected most of U-022's structure, but part of the response pattern remained. A sensory morph started forming without permission."
"Blind Echo," Z-69 said. John's cybernetic eye narrowed.
"I was going to call it acoustic bio-morphic residue."
"Bad name."
"It is accurate."
"It is still bad." Lumina looked between them. You are naming it as if it were a gift. The room fell quiet. Z-69 looked at her.
"It was not." It died. You used what remained.
"Yes." Honest. Not clean. John's fingers hovered above a secondary command.
"I can open the internal feed." Lumina's glow sharpened. Why?
"Because hiding corpses behind labels is how Crimeria turns them into inventory." John looked at the freezer.
"If Z-69 makes a decision about this, he should see what I kept."
"Open it," Z-69 said. Static crossed the display. The inner camera came alive. Cryo-vapor filled the image, then thinned. U-022 lay inside the containment cradle. Its torso had collapsed inward after death, preserved as though it had folded around a sound beneath the floor. Pale tissue stretched over uneven bones. Black tendons spread from the spine and skull beneath the ice. The face had no eyes. No nose. Only damaged skin and a mouth too wide for the skull beneath it. Its lips remained slightly parted.
As if death had interrupted the song without ending the listening. Lumina stepped back. It still feels awake.
"Residue," John said. Pain is often residue. John had no answer. Z-69 stared at the screen. The Hunger stirred. Not as a voice. As recognition. Meat. Memory. Adaptation. Part of U-022 had already entered him once. The rest waited behind glass. The Administrator Mask warmed against his face. White text unfolded across his vision. [YOU ARE STILL OBSERVED] Lumina felt the change through their bond. Z-69. The text continued.
[PREDATOR PATH RESPONSE DETECTED] [BIO-MORPHIC EVOLUTIONARY CELLS IDENTIFIED] [ORIGIN: U-022 / FLESH OF THE BLIND] [EXISTING RESONANCE: CONFIRMED] [COMPATIBILITY: PARTIAL] John watched his eyes.
"What did it find?" Z-69 read the next lines. [ADAPTATION TYPE: SENSORY MORPH] [PROBABLE OUTPUT: BLIND ECHO] Then the final condition appeared. [SYNC CONDITION: DIRECT CONSUMPTION REQUIRED] The Hunger rose. Wet pressure crawled along the inside of Z-69's spine. EAT. Lumina stared at him. Tell me.
"The Mask requires direct consumption." Her blue-white glow flared. No. John closed his eyes for half a second. He did not look surprised. Z-69 noticed.
"You expected this."
"I feared it." John brought up the remaining data.
"U-022's adaptation exists in cellular patterning, tendons, and Prime Flux scars. Your body already carries part of the structure. The corpse contains the rest." His mouth twisted.
"Your body has part of the key. The remains have the lock." The Hunger pressed harder. EAT. The Mask displayed another warning. [HUNGER RESPONSE WILL INTENSIFY DURING INTEGRATION] [PREDATORY OVERLAY RISK: HIGH] [PAIN-MEMORY CONTAMINATION POSSIBLE] Then the text vanished. The desire remained. John's hand drifted toward the emergency lock.
"This is why I did not open it first."
"You brought me here," Z-69 said.
"To show you what the choice costs." Lumina stepped between Z-69 and the freezer. Her body was too small to stop him. Her presence was not. The Hunger thinks the condition is permission. Z-69's jaw tightened. Behind them, the Dorian cube pulsed. NEXT KEY REQUIRED: LEVEL 4 INTERNAL NODE OR E-247 COUNTER-RECORD John glanced at it. Then at U-022.
"This ability could help us." Lumina turned on him. Of course you would make the corpse useful.
"I am not endorsing it." You are giving it purpose.
"It has purpose." The words struck the room too loudly. John heard himself. His expression darkened.
"That is the trap." Silence returned. John faced Z-69.
"Blind Echo could keep you alive when rooms start lying. Floor Eight is full of hidden ducts, dream residue, sealed routes, and things that kill through walls. Level Four hides doors inside clean offices. Dorian is trapped inside a system designed to erase witnesses." He pointed at the freezer.
"This could let you hear the lie before it closes around you." The Hunger approved. Z-69 hated that. John's voice hardened.
"And that is exactly why you should hate it." He looked older beneath the amber lights.
"I kept corpses because they were useful. I kept data because it was useful. I delayed burials because it was useful. If you start feeding every dead thing into your evolution because it helps you protect the living…" His gaze returned to U-022.
"…then you have discovered my entire career, only with better teeth." The words settled heavily. Lumina looked at Z-69. He is right. Z-69 did not deny it. Then why are you still looking?
"Because something does not stop being useful when it becomes ugly." John gave a dry, humorless laugh.
"That is not what I say." He looked Z-69 in the eye.
"That is what I think before I invent a prettier excuse." The Hunger continued pressing against its cage. John lowered his voice.
"Do not become efficient at taking." Z-69 thought of Caius, waiting decades for a burial. Dorian, hidden alive inside paperwork. Ten, afraid of knowledge written into his body. Elise carving NOT A NUMBER into a wall. Then U-022. A creature whose pain had become a weapon, a sample, and now an opportunity. Lumina moved closer. Do you want this ability because it can save people—or because The Hunger wants to become better at hunting? Z-69 remained silent. The Hunger smiled.
"Both." Lumina recoiled emotionally, a small fracture across their bond. He did not soften the answer.
"Both," Z-69 repeated.
"That is why you stay." To watch you eat it?
"To tell me when the second reason begins wearing the first one's face." Lumina stared at him for a long moment. Then she planted herself directly between him and the freezer. Hear this before you touch it. Z-69 waited. You will not free U-022 by using it. Her voice sharpened. You will not honor it by making it part of you. John flinched before she even looked at him. And you will not be better than John because your intentions sound prettier. Her blue eyes held Z-69's. You will only be using it better than he did.
The sentence struck directly through the Hunger's excuses. John whispered, "Good fox." You do not get to praise me for stabbing him with a knife you handed me. John closed his mouth. Lumina looked back at Z-69. Choose. Choice. The one thing the Tower had failed to remove. The Hunger slammed against his skull. EAT. The red thread around Z-69's wrist warmed. Lumina's presence pressed against his mind. Blue-white. Sharp. Real. He opened his eyes.
"No." John looked up. Lumina froze. The Hunger snarled. Z-69 stared at U-022.
"I need the ability." His voice remained calm.
"But The Hunger does not get to name the reason." Lumina held his gaze. Then set the rules. Z-69 turned toward John.
"Open the inner chamber." John's fingers hovered above the controls.
"Z-69—""Open it." Lumina spoke before the scientist could hide inside practicality again. No reconstruction. No second sample. No preserved tissue. No backup. No future exception. John looked at the freezer. The scientist in him fought the man trying to become less damned. The battle was brief. Not painless.
"Fine." Lumina's eyes narrowed. Properly. John exhaled.
"After this, whatever remains of U-022 is destroyed or buried. No experiments. No preserved tissue. No clever exception hidden in a drawer because future me is an arrogant bastard." No one laughed. Z-69 looked toward the restraint cabinet.
"If I lose control?" John followed his gaze. Then looked at Lumina.
"She pulls you back first." Lumina's ears lifted.
"I cut second," John continued.
"If necessary." Z-69 nodded.
"Good." Good? Lumina echoed.
"If he hesitates, kill him afterward." John blinked.
"Excuse me?" Lumina's expression sharpened. I will consider it.
"Wonderful," John muttered.
"Condemned by a glowing fox tribunal. Exactly how I expected my legacy to end." Z-69 stepped around Lumina. She did not stop him. Her voice followed him through the bond. If you stop being yourself, I will pull you back. The Hunger screamed. Z-69 entered the containment room. Cold vapor rolled around his boots. The chamber barely held the freezer cradle, two restraint arms, a drain channel, and an emergency incineration nozzle built into the ceiling. A room made for things John did not trust.
Perhaps including himself. Z-69 stopped before U-022. Behind the final cryo-glass waited pale tissue, black tendons, a partial skull without eyes, and a mouth that still felt as though it were listening. The Hunger struck again. EAT. Z-69's senses sharpened. The coolant line behind the freezer. The pump beneath the floor. John's artificial heart cycling unevenly. Lumina's paws pressing against the metal outside. The violet crystal pulsing inside his chest. The corpse waiting beyond the glass. He turned his head.
Lumina stood outside the chamber, blue-white light trembling around her small body. John remained beside the control panel, one hand hovering above the isolation switch. For once, he looked old. Not brilliant. Not sarcastic. Only old. A student watching his teacher walk willingly into another grave. Z-69 looked at Lumina.
"I am still here." Her voice reached him through the bond. Then stay. The containment door slid shut. One lock engaged. Then another. Then ten more. Cold vapor thickened around Z-69's feet. The freezer cradle began to open. Outside the glass, John activated the final isolation command. The inner room sealed.
