Lumina stared at the dead gallery. The Central Red Well remained physically present. The pressure needle had not fallen to zero. John watched the crystal-intake graph. Foreign residue stopped rising. Then changed direction. His face emptied.
"No." The first sound came from inside Z-69's chest. Laughter. Not human. Not Hunger. Not the voice of any single E-subject. A dozen language fragments sharing one release of air. Z-69's mouth opened, and the laughter passed through it. The Hunger stopped. For the first time since taking control, it did not understand what existed inside its territory. A red line appeared near the lower edge of the violet crystal. Thin. Bright. The fracture did not spread through crystal material. It spread through light.
A red-spectrum pattern forming inside a structure built to convert what entered it. The Administrator Mask returned. FOREIGN RETURN LATTICE DETECTED PREDATOR PATH INTAKE CHANNEL COMPROMISED CONVERSION PATH REVERSAL IN PROGRESS HOST IDENTITY COHERENCE AT RISK The Hunger forced the jaw closed. The laughter continued through the ribs. Red current entered the black repair veins beneath Z-69's skin. The temporary tissue built from consumed biomass tightened, then moved without the Hunger commanding it. One hand opened.
The Hunger closed it. The fingers opened again. The consumed lattice was not resisting digestion. It was using digestion. Every pathway the Hunger had opened to convert foreign biomass into self now carried the return pattern toward the violet crystal. A pathway designed to accept. Not reject. The Hunger ordered the intake channels closed. Bio-morph tissue obeyed. Too late. The foreign pattern already existed behind them. The red fracture branched. One line crossed upward.
A second entered the black veins around the sternum. A third moved toward the throat. REJECTION COHERENCE: 0% PREDATOR PATH CHANNEL INTEGRITY: 61% FOREIGN RESPONSE OCCUPATION: 8% Then: 12% The Hunger convulsed. Claws returned and struck the floor hard enough to split plating. Z-69's body attacked itself. Muscle compressed around the crystal. Temporary organs shifted. Digestive tissue isolated itself. The red pattern moved through each new route as soon as it formed.
The harder the Hunger rebuilt the body, the more pathways it created. A voice entered Z-69's lungs.
"LET US BE SUCCESSFUL." The Hunger snarled. Not at prey. At trespass. The Choir had no complete self to insert. No coherent group of minds waited to take his name. It carried something simpler. A distributed return instruction. Repair. Continue. Reach. Protect the core. Answer the Doctor. Become successful. The pattern did not know who Z-69 was. It did not need to. It only needed his body to stop distinguishing between itself and what had entered. FOREIGN RESPONSE OCCUPATION: 17% The Hunger tried to vomit.
Black fluid struck the gallery floor. Red filaments moved inside it. They turned back toward the violet crystal. The bio-morphic tissue that expelled them still recognized the fragments as converted fuel. The intake pathway drew them home. The Hunger struck the floor again. Out. The red pattern answered through Z-69's mouth.
"FEED." For the first time, the Hunger felt something close to fear. Not human fear. No imagined future. No grief. Only the horror of territory becoming uncertain. The boundary between food and self had stopped obeying it. Lumina felt the shock through the bond. She ran toward him. Z-69. The Hunger turned. One half of his face remained twisted by appetite. The other twitched through movements belonging to no single expression. A smile. A flinch. A gasp. Nothing completed. Lumina stood in front of him. Look at me.
The Hunger's eyes found her. For one second, the red current beneath his skin slowed. Lumina reached through the bond. Not into his thoughts. Not into his memories. Toward the familiar presence she had followed since the Tower. You are not what you eat. The Hunger recoiled from the sentence. It had no use for it. Something deeper did. Z-69's lips moved.
"No." Weak. Human. The Hunger snarled inside the same throat. The red lattice answered:"SUCCESSFUL." Z-69 spoke again.
"No." The word did not purge the pattern. It did not injure the Choir. It did not restore Thunderlight. It marked a boundary. Small. Temporary. Still present. HOST RESPONSE DETECTED FOREIGN RESPONSE OCCUPATION: 19% HOST IDENTITY LOCATION: CRYSTAL-ANCHORED / UNSTABLE Lumina stepped closer. Again. Z-69's claws dragged against the floor.
"No." The Choir shifted tactics. Not because it understood defiance. Because the response slowed occupation. Red tissue erupted from the Central Well and struck Lumina. She created four phantom copies, and the strand divided. Three passed through illusions. The fourth caught her real shoulder. Lumina spun across the floor and struck an empty capsule hard enough to crack the lower glass. The bond stretched. Z-69's head snapped toward her. The Hunger surged. Territorial aggression broke the fragile human response.
His body moved toward the attacking tendril. The foreign lattice moved with it. Exactly as the Choir needed. The Central Well opened. Red tissue climbed around Z-69's ankles—not rebuilding an external boss, but building an intake cradle around its new vessel. The Hunger tore through the first layer. More rose from below. It wrapped around one knee. Then the other. Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon. The Hunger slashed.
Claws removed strips of artificial muscle, but more returned from the shaft. Every strike fed motion into the body the lattice was occupying. The Choir spoke.
"ONE BODY." Not a philosophy. A system output selected from return logs.
"ONE RESPONSE." Red tissue reached Z-69's waist. The Hunger pulled against it, cracking the floor beneath his claws. Lumina forced herself upright. No Fox Token hung from her neck. No artifact answered her injury. The wooden charm remained inside Z-69's coat, pinned beneath black repair tissue and red intake membrane. It belonged to him. It remained inert while his conscious control was buried. Lumina had only her own abilities. Her body. Her illusions. The bond.
She created eight phantom Z-69s around the Central Well. Each carried a different posture: one raised Heaven-Sundering, one gathered false violet lightning, one opened predatory claws, one turned away. The Choir tested them all. Red tendrils entered each phantom. Seven dissolved. The real Z-69 remained inside the cradle. The illusion bought less than a second. Lumina used it. She reached him physically, closed her teeth around the torn black shirt near his shoulder, and pulled. The fabric stretched.
Z-69's body shifted several centimeters before the red cradle tightened around his waist. Lumina's paws slid across the floor. She changed her grip, bit deeper into the coat, and pulled again. The Choir struck her side. She did not release. A second tendril wrapped around her torso and lifted her from the floor. Lumina's teeth tore through cloth, and she fell backward with part of Z-69's shirt still between her jaws. The Fox Token remained with him, visible now against the dim violet crystal. Burned wood.
One missing ear. No light. No distance grip. Lumina crawled forward. Z-69. The red lattice answered through his mouth.
"Z-69." Its voice was not hers. It did not enter the bond. It came through physical lungs using a name the Vault had heard repeatedly. Lumina ignored it. She placed one paw on the torn cloth between her teeth. What am I holding? The question had worked in the Church shelters. Here, it felt absurd. Small. Useless. That was why it mattered. The Choir did not need useless answers. The Hunger stared. The Choir waited. Lumina looked at the black cloth. Your shirt.
For one impossible second, something inside Z-69 responded with irritation.
"My coat." The voice was faint. Dry. His. Lumina's eyes brightened. Good. FOREIGN RESPONSE OCCUPATION: 24% The Choir tightened the cradle. Z-69 sank to his abdomen. Red membrane pressed against the violet crystal, and the Fox Token became trapped beneath it. Lumina released the torn cloth and bit into the artificial tissue around his waist. Her teeth tore away a strip. Red fluid filled her mouth. She spat it aside. The membrane closed. She clawed at it.
Phantom paws appeared beside her real ones, creating false damage in six directions. The Choir tested each, found the two real wounds, and closed those first. Learning. Z-69 descended farther. The cradle reached the lower edge of his chest. The violet crystal remained exposed above it, red fractures crossing its lower half. The Hunger attacked the inside of the body again. Black veins constricted. The foreign lattice flowed through them.
PREDATOR PATH CHANNEL INTEGRITY: 39% FOREIGN RESPONSE OCCUPATION: 31% HOST MOTOR CONTROL: CONTESTED The Hunger's voice changed. Feed— The word broke. Me. Then the foreign lattice completed it through the same throat.
"US." The Hunger recoiled. For the first time, appetite itself no longer belonged entirely to it. Lumina reached through the bond. You hate sharing. The Hunger snarled. Immediate. Primitive. Violent. Mine. Not Lumina. Not the Vault. The body. The mouth. The name. Lumina pressed harder. Then keep him. The Hunger did not understand friendship. It understood territory. The foreign lattice was taking the only territory it possessed. The Hunger turned its violence inward. Claws struck the red cradle.
Black repair fibers separated from the Choir's tissue and pulled toward the violet crystal. For several seconds, occupation stalled. Z-69's body rose three centimeters. Lumina seized the moment and bit the artificial membrane again. Together—not cooperating, not trusting, only resisting the same invasion—Lumina and the Hunger pulled him upward. The Choir answered through the Vault. Every remaining purge rail moved. John saw the physical mechanisms turn.
"Elise, down!" They threw themselves beneath the control ring as sterilization emitters fired backward through the glass. White beams carved across the outer chamber. One beam struck John's cybernetic shoulder. Metal plating vanished. The arm remained attached by scorched cable and synthetic tendon. The emergency personnel hatch between the control ring and combat gallery sealed beneath red tissue. Elise looked at John's ruined shoulder.
"You need that."
"Frequently." Inside the gallery, false purge beams struck around Z-69. One white beam entered his back. Temporary black tissue burned away, and the foreign lattice used the damage. Red repair membrane crossed the wound before the Hunger could rebuild it. FOREIGN RESPONSE OCCUPATION: 37% Z-69's left eye changed. Green remained around the outer iris. Red appeared near the pupil. Not a new identity. A red-spectrum motor pattern gaining access to the sensory system. The Choir looked at Lumina through it.
She felt no mind behind the stare. Only classification. Bonded anomaly. Effective stimulus. Obstacle. A red tendril emerged from Z-69's own shoulder. Not one of his normal bio-morphs. It struck Lumina. She created a phantom body half a meter to the left. The tendril chose the real one. It had her physical position through Z-69's eyes. The blow caught her beneath the ribs. Lumina crossed the gallery and hit the broken remains of E-119's capsule. Glass cut into her side. She fell. The bond weakened.
The Hunger roared. The Choir tightened around the body. Z-69 sank to the lower edge of the violet crystal. The red fractures widened. FOREIGN RESPONSE OCCUPATION: 43% HOST IDENTITY LOCATION: UNSTABLE CRYSTAL ANCHOR CONTESTED Lumina lifted her head. The chamber moved around her. One foreleg would not support weight. Her hind leg still carried the wound from the Church. Blood darkened her blue-white fur. The Central Well pulled. Z-69 descended. Red membrane reached the center of the crystal. Half violet. Half red.
The Hunger's voice became difficult to separate from the Choir. Mine.
"OURS." Feed me.
"FEED US." Z-69 said nothing. Lumina crawled. One paw. Then another. No distance grip dragged him toward her. No Fox Token responded. No hidden artifact turned a wounded fox into a force capable of moving a Vault. She crossed the distance with her own damaged body. The Choir opened Z-69's mouth.
"SUCCESSFUL." Lumina reached the edge of the Central Well. Only one hand remained above the red membrane. The fingers had partly returned to human shape. She placed one paw against them. Z-69. No response. The Choir spoke through him. SUCCESSFUL." Lumina pressed her paw harder. You are the man who complained while saving everyone. Nothing. You are the man who chose the door instead of the heart. The red membrane climbed. You are the man who told me to go when the plan said I should stay. The hand twitched.
Y ou are the man who hates being called a light. One finger bent around her paw. Weakly. The Choir tightened. Lumina's bones creaked beneath the pressure. Z-69's voice entered through dozens of failed responses.
"ONE NAME." Lumina looked at the half-red crystal. No. The Choir waited. He chooses his own. The sentence did not damage it. It did not change the Vault. It gave the hand something to hold. Z-69's fingers closed around Lumina's paw. The foreign occupation stopped. Not reversed. Stopped. FOREIGN RESPONSE OCCUPATION: 47% The Hunger pressed from one side. The Choir pressed from the other. Z-69 remained between them. Barely. The gallery lights failed. Darkness swallowed Vault 7-R. Only the divided crystal remained.
Half violet. Half red. The Choir stopped pulling. It struck. A red hand unfolded from the Central Well. Each finger became a feeding tube. All five aimed at the divided crystal. Lumina screamed through the bond. Z-69! The hand descended. Then stopped. One hand held it. Metal fingers closed around the red limb centimeters from Z-69's chest. The impact should have crushed the arm. It did not. Red smoke curled between the steel fingers. A cigarette burned between John's teeth. Not orange. Red.
The ember glowed like a coal stolen from the inside of a heart. The emergency personnel hatch behind him had not opened cleanly. Its author lock had been torn out of the wall, and the frame still smoked. John stood inside the combat gallery with one ruined shoulder, one working hand, and red current moving beneath broken synthetic skin. He inhaled. The cigarette brightened.
Lines of red light traveled from the ember into the corner of his mouth, down his throat, beneath his collar, and through the damaged machinery hidden inside his coat. For one second, his old body stopped shaking. The Choir turned Z-69's head toward him.
"KEEPER." John exhaled. Red smoke crossed the membrane swallowing Z-69 and burned tiny black holes through it. His metal hand tightened around the Choir's feeding limb. The limb screamed. Not one voice. All the useful reactions inside it at once. John looked past the red hand, past the membrane, at the half-buried face of the person who had once taught him how to survive a dead world. His organic hand trembled once. Then stopped. The cigarette burned red between his teeth.
"Move away from my Master."
