Every screen and light in the penthouse had gone dark. Only moonlight came through the tall glass, run through with the crooked trails of old rain, laid down across the quiet floor. Lucian sat at the empty table, head bowed, hands clasped so tight the knuckles had gone white. He watched the raindrops slide down the glass and didn't move. Rustle. Footsteps on the carpet. Eleanor came over in a plain ivory robe, pulled a chair up beside him, sat close, and held out a bag of barbecue potato chips, already open.

"Here. Eat something." Lucian reached in, took one, chewed slowly. Crunch. Eleanor tilted her head to look at him.

"An hour ago you were shouting your heart out on a global feed. Now you're sitting in the dark like a cat left out in the rain. What happened?" Lucian swallowed.

"Getting rained on is better than getting a statue." His voice was rough. He looked down at his own small hands.

"I can model the cash flow of a whole planet. I can clear a dungeon before lunch. And I still can't tell you whether I'm making this world better or just building a nicer cage — the way Kang Min-Jae warned, before his whole centralized system fell over from the inside. Every time I fix something, three people copy the fix wrong and I have to go fix the copies. Where does that stop? When does it stop being me?" Eleanor set the chips down. "The true thing," Eleanor went on, "is that tonight, when the console told you it couldn't erase that company, you immediately started calculating how to crush it another way. Evelyn told you no. And you listened. That's the whole of it. Not that you're always right. That you stop when someone you respect tells you you're wrong." She squeezed his fingers.

"A person who can be told no is a person I can stand next to. That's not a small thing. It's the only thing that's ever made power survivable." She didn't give him an answer. She gave him a question instead.

"So here's what I actually want you to sit with. Not tonight — I don't need a reply." Her thumb moved over the back of his hand.

"If this world someday doesn't need you — if it patches its own bugs and settles its own debts and forgets whose company built the grid — would that really be a failure, Lucian? Or is that the shape of the thing working?" Lucian looked at her for a long moment. He didn't have a clean answer, and for once he didn't reach for one. The instinct to price it, model it, close the loop — it was there, and he just let it sit unresolved.

"I don't know," he said finally.

"I hate not knowing. But — I don't know."

"Good," Eleanor said, and there was a smile in it.

"That's the most honest thing you've said all week." She lifted their joined hands, rested her forehead lightly against his temple for a moment, and stayed there — two people leaning together in the dark, no chime, no metric, no promise sworn. They sat like that, shoulder to shoulder, while the last of the rain gave out. When the first grey light came up over the Han River, it found them still there, hands loosely linked, both awake and neither in a hurry to say so. Buzz. Buzz.

Evelyn's ringtone, then Evelyn herself at the door in a rumpled hoodie, tablet in hand — not sprinting, for once, but moving fast.

"Sorry. Not sorry. You'll both want this." She held the tablet up. On it, an orbital tracking plot.

"About twenty minutes ago something entered high orbit and parked itself. It's not a fleet. It's one object, and it isn't approaching, and it isn't broadcasting anything we can read." She swallowed.

"It's just... sitting up there. Pointed at us. Watching."
