A hard clean dawn came up over the Oslo coast after the blizzard. Ice floes drifted into the fjord and threw the morning light back in glints. Lucian walked the snow-blanketed beach with his hands in his pockets, head down. Every so often he toed a scatter of snow aside and picked up a spent black-copper magitech casing, dropping it in his coat pocket.

"Melt the Tartarus-alloy casings down for loom components. That's a few tens of thousands of won walking around on the sand doing nothing." This is the negotiated figure — full replacement cost for the munitions, plus the emergency premium our own procurement law requires us to offer for crisis supply, plus the resource stake our finance ministry recommended. It's fair. Our lawyers checked it three times. We would rather owe you honestly than thank you cheaply." Lucian took the folder. His fingers did, in fact, twitch.

The old instinct from his past life started screaming its usual nonsense — the premium alone could buy an island, charter a fleet, retire him ten times over. "Convert the premium you were going to hand me into a reconstruction grant — schools and winter heating, disbursed by your ministry, audited by your auditors, my name off it entirely. I'll match it once. Not forever. Once." Astrid stared at the marked-up folder.

"You're refusing money. You. There are commentators who will not believe this footage is real."

"I'm refusing profit," Lucian said.

"I said no profit. I did not say my accountants work for free." He handed the folder back.

"Pay the invoice. Take the grant. Buy heaters." Behind him, Evelyn — mid-sip of coffee — lowered the cup very slowly.

"He waived the premium. He waived the penalties. He turned down the Arctic stake." She looked genuinely unmoored.

"I've worked with this man long enough. I need to sit down." Sylvia and Astra watched the ministers page through the corrections, small smiles at the edges of their mouths. Eleanor stepped up beside him, reached over, and took his cold hand, folding her gloved fingers through his before leaning her shoulder lightly against his.

"You didn't save a civilization's soul," she said quietly, before he could get insufferable about it.

"You gave up a bonus and picked up a supplier relationship that'll still exist in ten years. That's smaller than the speeches will say." She squeezed his hand.

"It's also the most you've ever chosen to leave on the table on purpose. I noticed. That's all." Lucian let out a breath that fogged in the cold.

"Don't put a statue up." He looked at the sea.

"And write me into the retirement plan for this. When I finally quit and grow strawberries on a mountain somewhere, I want it on record that I once left a premium on a table in Norway. It's the only proof anyone will believe." Eleanor laughed, bright in the cold air.

"I'll file it. Under 'evidence the merchant had a heart, exhibit one.'" Late afternoon, a small fire on the sand. Lucian, Eleanor, Sylvia, Astra, Evelyn — sausage skewers, warm bread, Astra working through a strawberry ice cream she'd produced from somewhere despite the weather. Nobody announced an Era of Coexistence. The pressure board back on the flyer still showed a faint residual smear. Oslo still had cracked blocks.

But for one afternoon the sky over the fjord was clear, and that was enough to roast a sausage under. Astra tipped her head back at the clean northern sky and licked strawberry syrup off her thumb.

"Is it fixed now?"

"No," Lucian said, poking the fire.

"It's better. Those aren't the same word. I keep having to explain that to people this week."
