"Père," Steve said.
"I need paper. Blank paper. A notebook, a ledger, anything with empty pages." The priest dried his hands on a cloth that had been a cassock sleeve in a previous life.
"For your records?"
"I've been writing in the margins of a tourist guidebook. I'm running out of margins." Father Matthieu studied him over the drying cloth.
"You are keeping a chronicle. Of what is happening. Of what you are discovering."
"I'm keeping field notes. It's what archaeologists do."
"It is what witnesses do." The priest said it without emphasis. He left the kitchen and returned with a bound ledger. It was hardback and cloth-covered, the kind used for parish accounts. The pages were blank except for a column header on the first page reading Recettes et Dépenses in faded print.
"From the basilica's office. The accounts of Notre-Dame de la Garde. I brought what I could carry when I came down from the hill. I thought the records might matter." Steve took the ledger from him. The weight of it felt right in his hands, bound and designed to last. Better than guidebook margins and better than scraps.
"Merci, Père."
"Write what you see, Monsieur Parr. Someone will need to read it." * The avian guardian core sat on the crate beside the transmuted hinge plate. Steve had been staring at both for twenty minutes. The core was pale, wind-patterned, threaded with crystalline veins. The plate was dark, dense, carrying the grain of iron that had been pressed into Ether-soaked limestone beneath a church built on a fort built on a hill older than flowering plants. One was the engine, the other the vessel.
The problem was that the vessel was flat and the engine needed a tube.
"Archie," Steve said.
"If I bind this core to this plate with the intent of a directional channelling rod, what happens?"
"The binding will attempt to restructure the vessel according to the stated intent. If the vessel geometry is incompatible with the intent geometry, the restructuring will encounter resistance."
"Resistance meaning what?"
"The binding energy will seek alternative expression."
"That's not an answer, Archie."
"It is a precise answer. You are interpreting it as evasion because you lack the experiential framework to parse it. Proceed with the binding. The experiential framework will follow."
"Did Archie just tell you to try it and find out?" Donna asked from across the room.
"I believe he did."
"Progress." Steve picked up the core. Held it against the hinge plate. Closed his eyes and focused his intent: directional channelling. Axial geometry. Single point of output. A funnel that concentrates projection through one end instead of dispersing across my palms. The binding started. The core began to dissolve, the familiar process, the crystalline structure melting into the iron. Steve felt the Ether flow from the core into the plate, the energy seeking the pattern his intent had described. A rod. A channel.
A direction. Flat geometry refused it. Energy pushed against flat geometry that had no axis and no direction. The Ether couldn't restructure a rectangle into a cylinder. The binding stalled halfway with the core half-dissolved. The plate was glowing with energy trapped between intent and reality that had nowhere to go. Then it started to heat up. Steve's fingers registered the temperature change. A second later his brain caught up. The iron was softening.
The binding energy, unable to restructure, was dispersing as heat. The transmuted metal, already Ether-responsive, was absorbing that heat and becoming malleable.
"Arthur!" Arthur was there in three steps. He touched the plate, and Steve watched his face change. The iron was workable. The molecular structure loosened by Ether energy that had no other outlet.
"It's malleable," Arthur said.
"The binding energy is acting as a forge. This won't last." Steve held the plate while Arthur worked. The lump hammer came down in precise, rapid strikes, not the heavy blows of a blacksmith but the controlled taps of shaping material to specification. His hands moved faster than Steve could track. A shape started to emerge. A rod, thirty centimetres with the width of a finger. Tapered at one end for directional output, flared at the other for grip.
He bent the softened iron along its longest axis, folded, hammered, folded again. The metal cooperated; the Ether in the material wanted to move, wanted to find a new configuration, and Arthur's forging gave it one. Donna watched from three metres away.
"How long does he have?"
"The working window is approximately fifteen minutes," Archie said.
"Eight minutes forty seconds have elapsed."
"You're counting?" Donna said.
"The alternative is not counting. That alternative leads to a wasted core and a malformed vessel. I assumed you preferred the version with information." Arthur's hammer fell in a rhythm that Steve had seen sometimes at site locations. The same tempo Arthur used when assessing a damaged beam, where the structural analysis was happening in his hands rather than his head. If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. The flat plate was becoming a rod, rough but functional, the shape emerging from the material under Arthur's direction.

"Re-focus. The shape is close enough. Complete the binding." Steve wrapped his bandaged hands around the rough rod. The iron was still warm. The half-dissolved core was still in the metal, waiting. He closed his eyes and pushed: directional channelling. Axial flow. Focus. The intent met the geometry. This time, the shape agreed. The binding completed in a rush of light, the remaining core energy flooding through the rod, the iron darkening, the grain restructuring into channels that ran the length of the shaft.
The tapered end brightened and the grip end warmed in his palm. When he opened his eyes, the rod was transformed, darker than the hinge plate it had been, the surface carrying the wind-crystal patterns of the avian core woven through forging lines that mapped its new purpose.

A tongue of blue-white flame appeared at the rod's tip. Clean and controlled. With no concussive bleed and no resonance scatter.
The fire burned steady for five seconds, and Steve's hands didn't burn at all.
"Oh," he said.
"Oh, that's different."
"You made a wand," Donna said.
"It's a focus. A directional Ether conduit shaped from transmuted military iron using a forging technique we just invented by-""Wand." Steve looked at Arthur, who shrugged.
"It's a bit wandish."
"Traitors. Both of you."
"The designation is irrelevant to function," Archie said.
"The channel isolation is approximately ninety-four percent on single-mode thermal output. This represents a significant improvement over bare-hand projection."
"Thank you, Archie. At least someone in this party respects precision."
"I was providing a diagnostic measurement. Respect was not a component of the output." Donna cracked a smile. Arthur was looking at the hammer in his hand and at the spot on the crate where he'd reshaped the iron. He had moved past the celebration to the implication.
"Anyone can do this," he said.
"Anyone who tries to bind a core to the wrong shape and pays attention to what happens. The binding energy softens the material. You reshape during the window. Complete the binding." He set the hammer down.
"Every forge in history was invented this way. Someone did something wrong and paid attention."
"And nobody documented the first ones," Steve said. The connections were firing behind his eyes, but tempered this time.
"They just sold what they made. Every faction with transmuted materials and someone paying attention will figure it out."
"The world will need every advantage it can get for what is coming," Arthur finished. * Nadia brought Léonie to them that afternoon. Léonie Sarr was twenty-eight, dark-skinned and lean from years spent underwater rather than on land. She wore a faded CNRS t-shirt and cargo shorts and had the stillness of someone who was comfortable observing things for long hours. A marine biologist and a diver.
"Nadia says you need to get into a submerged cave." She sat without being invited and looked at Steve.
"Which cave?"
"Cosquer Cave," Steve said.
"Entrance at thirty-seven metres. Tunnel runs a hundred and seventy-five metres to a dry chamber."
"I know what Cosquer Cave is." Léonie's expression suggested she also knew what diving to thirty-seven metres through a hundred and seventy-five metres of submerged tunnel involved.
"I've dived to the entrance twice. The tunnel is narrow, dark, and silty. Visibility drops to zero if you touch the walls. One wrong turn and you're dead. Three people have died in that tunnel already."
"We know," Arthur said.
"Do you also know that the water around Cap Morgiou has been different since the sky changed? The Ether, whatever it is, is in the water. The marine life is..." She paused, choosing her next word carefully.
"The marine life is no longer behaving the way marine life should behave. I've seen octopi the size of dogs. Eels that glow. Something in the shallows near Morgiou that I couldn't identify and I have a PhD in Mediterranean marine ecology."
"The Ether mutates everything," Steve said.
"Land creatures, marine creatures. Anything biological. I'm hoping not all mutations are deadly, but it is too early to tell."
"Yes. And you want to dive thirty-seven metres through a tunnel that might now be full of things that used to be jellyfish and are now something else."
"We need to reach the dry chamber," Arthur said.
"There's something inside that we have to activate. It's part of a network. I can't explain all of it." Léonie looked at him for a long moment. Her gaze moved to the Ironhold leaning against the crate, then Steve's rod, still faintly warm, then Donna's axe with its Refined edge catching the light.
"You talk like a madman. How many of you have dived before?" Donna raised a hand without looking up.
"Open water certification. Ten years ago. Holiday in Greece." Arthur and Steve said nothing. Léonie closed her eyes for a moment.
"So I'm taking two non-divers to thirty-seven metres through a cave that killed three experienced divers, in water that's now full of mutated marine life, to reach a chamber that contains something none of you can explain to me."
"That's an accurate summary," Arthur said.
"Our bodies are different now. They can handle a lot more than what pre-system bodies could. You need to take that into account," Steve added. Léonie sat down on the nearest crate. She was quiet for thirty seconds. When she spoke again, the scientist had won whatever argument she'd been having with herself.
"There's a dive centre at Pointe-Rouge. South coast, maybe four kilometres from here. Tanks, regulators, wetsuits, BCD vests, fins, masks. Spearguns in the rental rack. I can get us kitted for four. There should be chemical light sticks in the emergency supplies." She looked at Arthur.
"We go the day after tomorrow. I train your two non-divers in the harbour shallows from dawn to dusk. We reach the cave by midday. And if anything in that tunnel is bigger than me, we turn around. No arguments. My water, my rules." Arthur looked at Donna for the read. Donna gave the fractional nod that meant she's competent, she's sensible, let her lead.
"Your water," Arthur said.
"Your rules."

The iron softened to a workable state. It did not melt. A real forge runs at twelve hundred degrees and produces material that will end your hand if you touch it. Whatever the system did to that hinge plate kept it at a temperature human hands could brace against. If that is right, then the cores hold more states than the system advertises.
The notification names two: bound and unbound. The forge state is a third, and it sits between them, and the system does not announce it. I want to know how many other unannounced states exist. ✎ The system hid a manufacturing process inside a failure state. Every faction with transmuted materials and one observant person is minutes away from weapons production.
