Arthur had been thinking the same thing. The transit chamber was waiting.
The destination was unknown. And they were wearing the same clothes they'd been fighting in for three days, with no armour, no supplies, and a first aid kit that consisted of the bandages Geoff had given them and adrenaline.
"We need gear," Donna said.
"Proper gear. Before we do anything else."
"Where?" Steve asked.
"Snow Hill." She said after thinking for a bit "City of London police station. Halfway between here and the Embankment."
"A police station," Steve said.
"You want to loot a police station."
"I want to requisition equipment from an abandoned emergency services facility. And it's not just any station." She turned onto a side street without slowing down.
"Snow Hill is a public order staging point. I know because I assessed their physical security two years ago for a contract with the Corporation of London. They store riot equipment for financial district deployments, protest response, civil disorder, that sort of thing. Full public order kit."
"What does that mean in practical terms?" Arthur asked.
"It means stab vests, riot armour, batons, and a custody suite full of things that were designed to keep police officers alive when people are trying to hurt them. Which is a reasonable description of our current situation." Steve was quiet for a moment.
"You assessed their security. Meaning you know the layout."
"I know every door, every lock, every storage room, and at least two ways in that don't require a key." Donna's voice carried the satisfaction that surfaced when her pre-apocalypse skills turned out to be exactly, precisely and absurdly relevant.
"Red teaming. It's not just a job title."
"It sounds like a job title for breaking into buildings."
"It is a job title for breaking into buildings. I was very good at it." * Snow Hill police station was a compact brick building tucked into a side street near Smithfield Market. Two storeys with a heavy front door and barred windows on the ground floor. The lamp above the entrance was dark, but the building was intact. And empty from the looks of it. Arthur could hear no sound, see no lights or shadows in the windows.
The City of London Police was the smallest force in England, barely eight hundred officers covering the Square Mile. When the system hit, they'd have consolidated to their main station at Guildhall or dispersed to their families. A satellite station like Snow Hill would have been abandoned within hours.
"The mortar joints are sound," Archie observed out of the blue.
"The brickwork predates your current century. The original builders understood load distribution. Your species occasionally produces adequate masonry."
"You do realise that your tendency to remark on random things and then being obtuse when we ask about relevant details is infuriating, yes?" Arthur made his own observation Archie's geometry rotated and changed direction. It almost felt like he was giving them the cold shoulder Donna bypassed the front door entirely. She led them around to a side entrance - a staff access point with a keypad lock that no longer had power and a physical deadbolt beneath it.
"Two years ago, this deadbolt was a single-cylinder pin tumbler. A budget model that I flagged in my report as a vulnerability." She pulled the utility blade from her belt and fifteen seconds of precise manipulation later the lock clicked.
"They didn't upgrade." The door swung open. The station inside was preserved in the amber of sudden departure: mugs on desks, a jacket over a chair, a half-eaten sandwich turning green on a filing cabinet. Donna moved through the building like she'd built it.
"Custody suite. This way." The custody storage room was behind a reinforced door that Donna opened with a multi-tool and forty-five seconds of patience. The inside was filled with lockers. Rows of them, floor to ceiling, each labelled with equipment categories in Met-standard notation. She moved with precision knowing exactly what they needed and where she would get them.
"Stab vests." She pulled three from a locker. These were black, bulky and serious. Body armour with rigid panels front and back over layers of woven Kevlar, designed to stop knife and spike penetration. She tossed one to Arthur.
"These are rated for KR2 plus SP2. That's knife resistance and spike protection. They won't stop a bullet, but they'll stop anything with an edge or a point up to fifty joules of impact plus margin" Arthur held the vest up and examined the panel construction. The rigid inserts were a composite: ceramic-faced, Kevlar-backed, seated in nylon carriers. He put it on and adjusted the straps.
The vest sat over his chest and back like a second ribcage, and his actual ribcage, the cracked one, registered the compression with a spike of pain.
"How does it feel?" Donna asked.
"Like wearing a building."
"Good. That's the point." Steve's vest fit poorly. It was too wide in the shoulders, designed for someone with more mass. Donna adjusted the side straps until it stopped shifting. Steve looked down at himself and said "I want it on the record, that three days ago I was a research archaeologist with a university pension, and now I'm wearing police body armour in a looted custody suite."
"I'd say your life's looking up," Donna said.
"Next locker." Steve paused at a duty belt drawer and pulled it open. Inside, among the handcuff pouches and radio holsters, a loose nine-millimeter round sat in the corner. He picked it up and turned it in his fingers. The brass felt warm. It was warmer than the drawer, warmer even than the room. When he held it toward the light from the barred window, the casing had an iridescence that copper-zinc alloy didn't produce.

"No firearms," Donna said, reading his look.
"City Police armed response operates out of Leman Street. Different station, different security tier. If the ARV unit consolidated after Day Zero, they took everything with them."
"That's not what I'm thinking about." Steve held the round up "This has been sitting in ambient Ether for four days. It's transmuting the same way every other metal is transmuting. The propellant inside is a nitrocellulose compound undergoing molecular rewrite. The primer is a lead-based detonator whose activation chemistry is changing in ways nobody can predict." He set the round back in the drawer.
"This might fire. It might not. It might do something else entirely. Every chemical compound in every round of ammunition in London is being rewritten at the molecular level. We know Ether transforms metals; we saw it in the Printworks. There's no reason to think it stops at metal."
"So guns are unreliable," Arthur noted"Guns are unknown. Which is worse." Steve closed the drawer.
"You can work with unreliable. You can't plan around a weapon that might fire, might fizzle, or might detonate in your hand because the primer compound has transmuted into something with a lower activation threshold. Day One, ammunition was probably fine. By now?" He shrugged.
"I wouldn't pull the trigger." He looked at Archie. The question was implicit.
"Your analysis of the transmutation cascade is approximately seventy-one percent accurate," Archie said.
"The remaining twenty-nine percent relates to compounds you have not yet identified. The conclusion, however, is sound."
"Which compounds?" Archie's geometry rotated once. He did not answer. Steve wrote "71%: what compounds?" in the margin of the guidebook. Arthur filed away the information. The weapons that worked were the ones that relied on physics - mass, edge, force, leverage. The weapons that relied on chemistry were a gamble with odds that worsened by the day. The public order storage was in the basement. Donna led them down a narrow staircase to a reinforced room that had the riot kits. Shelves of it, stacked and labelled.
Shin guards of hard polymer shells over dense foam, strapped below the knee. Designed for kicks, thrown bottles, and street debris. Arthur tested one against his forearm, rapping the shell with his knuckle. It felt solid.
"These'll take a claw strike." Then came the forearm protectors, same construction, shorter, strapped from wrist to elbow. Donna grabbed three sets without discussion. She paused at the riot helmets. Picked one up. Full-face visor, neck guard, reinforced crown. She turned to Arthur.
"You should wear this."
"It restricts peripheral vision."
"You're the one who stands in front of things and lets them hit you. Your head is the one target the stab vest doesn't cover." Arthur took the helmet and tried it. The visor narrowed his field of view by maybe twenty degrees on each side. In a building this was manageable. In open ground against fast creatures it could be dangerous.
"Compromise," he said.
"I'll carry it. I'll put it on when we're in enclosed spaces or facing something big. On open ground, it stays on the pack."
"Acceptable." Donna picked up a second helmet, looked at it, and put it back. She needed her peripheral vision more than she needed head protection. Speed was her armour.
"Steve, you take one too. Strap it to your pack." Steve held the helmet at arm's length.
"I look like I'm about to go kettle at a protest."
"You look like someone who's going to survive getting hit on the head. Strap it." The station kitchen gave them tinned beans, tinned soup, UHT milk, biscuits, and eight bottles of water. Donna found a box of electrolyte sachets in the first aid room and took all of them. Arthur raided the first aid supplies properly, getting fistfulls of bandages, surgical tape, and compression wraps. He used one immediately on the cracked rib. The relief was significant. They also took proper patrol packs from the locker room.
These were black, forty litre ones, designed for long shifts. They scavenged the rest of the building for spare clothes and then loaded the packs methodically. Donna also took two ASP batons from the duty belt rack. Extendable, steel-cored, designed for one-handed use. She clipped one to her own belt and handed the other to Arthur.
"Sidearm. For when the shield's engaged and you need something faster than the crowbar." Arthur flicked his wrist and the telescoping sections locked into a rigid twenty-one-inch baton with a weighted tip. Compact, balanced and fast. He could feel the difference from the crowbar immediately. This was designed to be swung, the crowbar was a lever he'd been misusing as a weapon. He clipped it to his belt. The crowbar went into the pack as a tool. Its fighting days were over.
They kitted themselves in the safety of the station. Weapons were secured. The stab vests tightened. Shin guards strapped and the forearm protectors fastened. * They found a construction site two streets from the Embankment. A half-finished office renovation, the scaffolding was up, hoarding around the perimeter with site cabins sitting open. Arthur climbed through a gap in the hoarding and came back four minutes later with his arms full. The lump hammer came first.
Four pounds of drop-forged steel head with a twelve-inch handle. Arthur held it out to Steve.
"Hit that." He pointed at a chunk of concrete rubble by the hoarding. Steve looked dubious but swung. The concrete cracked but held. Arthur took the hammer back and swung at another concrete slab. The concrete shattered. The hammer punched through and buried itself two inches into the ground beneath.
"The crowbar distributes force along a thin edge," Arthur said, pulling the hammer free.
"It pries. It levers. It's a tool. This," he tested the balance, "concentrates four pounds onto a two-inch striking face. Every point in strength I have, goes through that contact point. This hammer will collapse anything with structural integrity."
"Right," Steve said, looking at the destroyed slab.
"I'll stay behind you." Donna got a short pry bar of flat steel with a curved end. This was the answer to the Printworks problem. The Conduit-Edge Axe was built for cutting. Against metal or stone, the pry bar gave her mass and hardness. She tested the weight and nodded once. Steve's upgrade was the Reacher shaft. Arthur had found a scaffold tube of aluminium, lighter and stronger than the painter's pole.
He cut it to length with a hacksaw from the site cabin, then mounted the Reacher blade using a proper mechanical fixing, two bolts through pre-drilled holes, a copper ferrule hammered from pipe offcut with the joint wrapped tight with steel wire. An engineered connection. Steve tested the balance. The sensory feedback still hummed through the new shaft. The artifact properties lived in the blade, not the pole. But the weapon felt different in his hands. It felt more solid, more professional.
A tool that wouldn't break at the worst possible moment.
"Better?" Arthur asked.
"Significantly."
"Ready?" Arthur asked.
"I was ready two streets ago," Donna said.
"You're the one who spent ten minutes choosing a hammer." They headed for the embankment and the concealed door. And for the first time since the pub, he felt like he was wearing the right equipment for the job. None of them knew where the transit platform would take them but the Thames smelled of mud and endings. He would not identify the remaining 29%. I wrote "71% - what compounds?" in the margin. He has not answered. He will not answer. The silence is the answer. The immediate conclusion is that ammunition is unreliable and will get worse. But ammunition is a small problem inside a much larger one. Every chemical compound in a high-Ether zone is undergoing molecular rewrite. Propellant. Adhesive. Sealant. Preservative. Medicine. Medicine. Paracetamol has a molecular structure. So does insulin. So does adrenaline.
So does every antibiotic in every pharmacy we've raided. If the transmutation curve follows the same gradient as metals, anything chemistry-dependent has a shelf life measured in weeks, not years. The entire pharmaceutical supply of London is on a countdown that nobody is tracking because nobody else knows it's happening. Physics still works. Mass, edge, leverage, force. Arthur's lump hammer philosophy is correct, and I suspect he arrived at it by instinct before I arrived at it by analysis.
Concentrate force through minimal contact area. The man thinks in load paths even when he's swinging a weapon. But chemistry is leaving us. Quietly. One molecule at a time. ✎ Find a doctor. Soon. Someone who understands pharmacology well enough to identify which compounds are still stable and which have already turned. This is not optional. This is the next crisis and it hasn't arrived yet because nobody is looking.
