"I life worth living must be sculpted, carved by the chisel of decision. The self you are today is the raw material that will be cut away to reveal the man you can become. Every hit of the hammer refines the work." - Inscribed on the Sundial of Possibilities, Central Atrium, Unseen Library. MASON I awoke to sunlight warming my legs and the scent of damp earth in my lungs. My ass was numb and my back ached, the cool air leaving a biting chill that misted when I breathed.
For a disorienting moment I thought myself back in New York, laying on the street somewhere, expecting the sound of wailing sirens. The wound in my side was a painful throb of pressure, stiff muscles protesting as I struggled into a sitting position in my small shelter. My health had replenished as I slept, the System interface no longer feeling like a shock - it was amazing how quickly one could adjust to a new normal.
The bar was still in the yellow, a helpful message explaining that external treatment would be required for a full recovery due to the extensive damage. I pull up my shirt to examine it myself. The gash in my side should have been a mess, but it had already healed to a remarkable degree. Instead of a puss-filled wound it was now just an angry red scar, black around the edges where I'd crudely cauterized it. Deciding not to question my good fortune, I stepped out of the cave and into the morning quiet.
Mist weaved its way between ancient trees and thick vegetation, clinging to the forest floor like slowly drifting clouds of cotton candy. Crepuscular rays splashed through the canopy overhead, ferns glittering with dew that sparkled in the shifting sunlight. I felt an unusual calmness taking it in, like this is where I was meant to be, the displacement I'd always felt in New York wholly absent as I breathed in air so clean it was almost painful in my lungs. Three weeks, Zachias had said.
Three weeks to make it back to Caltech, the robotics lab, a studio apartment that I'd seen only in pictures. Nobody would be trying to stab me there, and the only monsters were of the metaphorically variety. Monsters. I opened the CODEX in my System interface, a newly unlocked bestiary section appeared as an empty page waiting to be filled. Punching a bag in a closed gym was a far cry from fighting to survive, from feeling the fear of not knowing if you'd live or die, the pain of winning even when you did.
Images from the bandit fight replayed in my head, forcing me back to the ground as I fought the ensuing nausea. I could feel the weight of that man's life ending under my fist, the squelch of the sword as I pulled it free, the look of shock frozen on that archer's face as he hung from the tree. I shoved the guilt down, locking it in a box and burying it deep. The "Achievement" I'd earned for the slaughter still blinked in my peripheral vision, demanding my attention. Reluctantly, I expanded the window.
SYSTEM MESSAGE: ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED - "First Blood""Ending life is never easy, but a predator must learn to hunt. The dying spark of your ancestors rekindles into tepid flame." REWARD: Title - [Iron-Fist Rookie] Rarity: Common Equipped Effect: +5% Damage when fighting Humanoids. Display Effect: Displays "Rank F" insignia (Socially valid for Guild Registration). It read as an appraisal, a scientist taking notes about the observations of the rat he had running in his maze.
Was that what I was now, a predator, earning achievements for taking human lives? Anyone sane would have already been on their way to Kelna. The rest of the message made no sense to me so I navigated deeper into the interface, finding a new tab simply labeled [Titles]. A submenu revealed my previous reward, a Title labeled [The Survivor] and the new [Iron-Fist Rookie]. I drilled down further for an explanation, finding what I was looking for in the CODEX menu.
Titles were "honors" awarded for specific deeds, carrying tangible benefits as well as social status. By slotting a Title into an open slot, a System user earned the benefits. Currently, the interface showed Active Effect Slots: 0/1. I was gated by my own weakness, additional slots unlocking at Character Levels 10, 25, 50, and 90. It was crazy, the convoluted systems of an MMO made real. I selected [The Survivor] and equipped it, curiosity once again getting the better of me.
TITLE EQUIPPED: [The Survivor] PASSIVE EFFECT: +1 Constitution. Hunger and thirst accrual reduced by 10%. My breathing eased slightly, a faint warmth spreading through my chest. The persistent ache in my wounded side dulled enough to be noticeable as my Constitution attribute bumped up by a point. My stomach growled, the need for food evidently not alleviated by the meager 10% Title bonus. I materialized a ration from my inventory, noting the number ticking down as I did.
The sensation was unnerving, as if pulling from a pocket that wasn't there. It was stale and tasteless, but edible. I washed it down with some delicious water from the nearby spring, hoping it wasn't full of alien microbes that would eat me from the inside out. I knew that I should head back to the road, continue on to Kelna, to home... but curiosity tugged at me to stay, to at least explore this alien planet a bit.
Three weeks was a long time and how many people got a chance like this, to see another world, even one as violent as this one? I ventured into the forest to stretch my legs, setting aside the decision for now. There was a small clearing not far from the cave, the new map in my head orienting my direction intuitively. Feeling inspired, I drew the rusty sword. Its balance was shit, the center of mass tilting hard toward the handle and making it difficult to swing with precision - not that I knew how to swing a sword.
My inner child flipped back to happier days with Caden, playing at being legendary warriors in Central Park, our state-employed minders watching with rare smiles on their all-too-serious faces. My first few swings were clumsy, more suited for clearing weeds than fighting monsters, but before long I fell into a sort of trance. There was a shift inside my head, time slowing, or perhaps my movements accelerating. So this was a combat skill.
I felt my vision sharpen, the muscles in my arms and legs becoming more responsive, the pain in my side fading to the background, the movement of my limbs so coordinated it felt like performing a choreographed dance. If my brain was a computer, this skill was overclocking it, processing trajectories and angles at a speed I'd have thought impossible. I became a whirlwind of motion, losing myself in the dance, the rusty sword a red-orange blur in the green of the forest.
Even without an opponent to fight, the progress bar for the sword skill ticked upwards; a dopamine-releasing, incremental reward for my effort that was as addictive as any drug. An hour later, I collapsed on the ground, exhausted. Sweat dripping, chest heaving, a smile on my face. I stared at a tree stump where a bushy-tailed creature the size of my fist nibbled at a clump of bioluminescent moss. Zachias had annihilated an entire section of forest with the flick of a finger - world-breaking power.
My thoughts turned to my mana pool, the number I'd seen that first day still sitting at a full 250 points. Swinging a sword was one thing, but that was possible on Earth... magic, now that was something else entirely. I took a new stance, feet firmly planted, the alien squirrel scuttling away with an irritated squeak in my direction. I focused my attention on the tree stump and tried to picture the mana as a battery waiting to be discharged, to will a connection between the energy and my muscles.
The blade thudded into the decaying wood with a disappointing thwack, the System throwing errors. If this thing was inside my head, maybe it understood my intentions. Zachias hadn't used words, at least none that I'd heard. Losing the battery metaphor, I instead thought of the mana as the link in a chain, like a punch that required a flow of energy through the body and out into a specific target location. I kept at it for another two hours, one failure after another providing useful data. I could feel myself getting closer, the System engaging circuits that I'd never felt before, but each time they would fizzle and die before hitting whatever threshold was required to activate the skill. I thought about Zachias again, the way he'd manifested the orb above his finger. The System was in my head, it had access to my thoughts and intentions, maybe I just hadn't found the right trigger.
Intention couldn't be enough on its though, that would be chaos, no, there had to be knowledge and skill checks that allowed the magic to express itself. I dismissed the sword and focused on the kinetic chain of a punching combination - something I knew, something I was sure the System would see I had the necessary knowledge and skill to perform. I prepared to strike, picturing the mana in my body as a current of electricity, intention given physical form, an energy I could mold and direct.
The System rang loudly in my head and a vibration rippled up my arm as I unleashed a basic triple combination. My fist connected with the tree stump and it shattered, splinters flying in every direction, peppering my face with tiny bits of debris. I didn't even feel the impact on my knuckles, almost as if a protective wave of energy had been projected out from the fist itself. My MP dropped by 50 points in the corner of my vision, a wave of exhaustion following behind it.
SYSTEM MESSAGE: Directed Kinetic Enhancement Detected... NEW ACTIVE SKILL ACQUIRED: [Kinetic Burst] (Iron Rank - Level 1) GOVERNING ATTRIBUTE: Strength DESCRIPTION: Channel a surge of mana to empower your next melee attack, momentarily increasing its impact force and penetration. COST: 50 Mana Points per use. COOLDOWN: 3 seconds. I grinned; I couldn't help it. I had taken a concept from my world and imposed it on the rules of this one, humble and impractical as the result may have been.
The feeling was addictive, a thrill more potent than any victory in the ring. But my breakthrough had come at a cost, the rusty sword now sported a spiderweb of cracks along the blade. My new power was too much for the cheap iron. Deciding not to risk further mana depletion, I sat on a nearby log to rest. I ate another ration, gazing out over the murky pond, the afternoon sun warming my face.
The floating cliffs I'd seen the night before struck me now as beautiful, fear and disbelief giving way to a dawning sense of wonder. Zachias had said that monsters waited up on those cliffs, implying I could one day have the strength to fight them should I choose to. The distraction and rush of a bare knuckle fight in the Rat Pit was one thing, but could I really see myself wielding magic like a superhero, fighting monsters with a sword and shield?
The ridiculous truth was that the thought caused a burst of excitement I hadn't felt in years of math classes and chess tournaments. Potential? But could I really leave everything behind, forget the world I knew, step into so much unknown? What would I really be leaving behind? I ran the list. Lawrence, who had been lying to me for seventeen years. That was the whole list - if you didn't count the dead, which I generally tried not to. Jesus, that's sad.
Goosebumps rose on the surface of my skin as a stillness descended on the clearing. The birds went silent and the hum of insects ceased. Years on the streets of New York had honed my survival instincts to a sharp edge and they were screaming at me now that something was amiss. My eyes darted to the reeds, the pond's surface disturbed by something big enough to cause ripples on the surface. My hand went to the hilt of my sword, pulling it free before I had time to consider what I was doing.
I took a step back just as a creature exploded from the water, a blur of green scales and snapping teeth. It had the reptilian head of a crocodile and the lean hind legs of a raptor. It stood tall and snapped its jaws in an intimidating display; it was nearly chest high, its skin thick and scarred. It tasted the air with a forked tongue, bioluminescent markings pulsing green along its flank. I retreated back and it lunged, throwing its large head to the side to snap jaws closed a mere inches from my face.
I threw myself backward to escape its reach, landing hard on the ground but maintaining my grip on the rusty weapon. I scrambled back on my elbows and hissed loudly, circling to my right away from the sword, its vertical slit eyes tracking me. I managed to roll back and onto my feet, narrowly avoiding a second strike of its muscular tail. I swung the sword wildly but it hit nothing but air, the creature dodging away in an athletic leap much faster than its size would suggest it could move.
It was using the terrain, darting between the tall reeds, a ghost of green and grey; it was toying with me, jumping forward and back to bait out a response that would leave an opening. It danced left and I moved to avoid it, but the strike had been a feint, its long front claws flashing and biting deep into my right arm. Pain flared but I had no time to indulge it, retreating in a full sprint away from the reeds, knowing that I'd be unable to defend myself against its much quicker reflexes.
I found a nearby circle of fallen trees, putting myself in the center to deny it the cover of the environment - perhaps in a straight up fight I had a chance. The lizard hissed again and I sidestepped a swipe from my left this time, using its momentum to send it flying into the dirt. I tried to follow up, but it was fast... too fast. It recovered so quickly I could barely track it, whipping its tail at my legs and sending me sprawling onto my back.
Its teeth sank into the meat of my right calf and I cried out, time slowing in a massive dump of adrenaline. My heart pounded loud in my skull, the blood rushing in my ears made it hard to think. I knew if this went on much longer I was dead. I channeled all my concentration into a single, desperate thought: [Kinetic Burst] Mana surged through my arm, the raw power blocking out the pain. I drove the broken end of the sword down toward the creature's eye, the blade flashing a bright blue as it filled with mana.
It slammed into the lizard's face with the force of a headman's axe and the tip sunk deep, splintering as it entered the monster's brain. It screeched and its body went rigid, jaw releasing my leg with a sudden rush of relief that brought tears to my eyes. It thrashed on the ground for several seconds before going still, the sword broken off halfway inside its head. The light in its scales flickered and then dimmed, fading to a lifeless green.
Silence returned to the clearing and I lay on the ground gasping for air. A fresh wave of nausea threatened to empty my stomach, the coppery scent of my own blood mixing with the creatures black ichor creating a smell that defied description. SYSTEM MESSAGE: ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED - "Hunter's Initiation""The wilds of Caldera hold many dangers, but embrace the hunt and you will unlock power beyond your grandest dreams.
To slay a beast above your rank is the first step toward greatness, but no power ever comes without cost." REWARD: Title - [Beast Slayer] Rarity: Common Equipped Effect: Unlocks detailed loot tables for Beast-type enemies. Display Effect: +10% intimidation against wild animals and monsters below your level. The System, unbothered by my wrecked state, kept chiming with more messages. SYSTEM MESSAGE: [Sword Combat Efficiency] (Iron Rank) has advanced to Level 2.
ENEMY DEFEATED: Glowfen Lurker (Level 3) CHARACTER XP GAINED: +125 ERROR: Character XP is full. Please complete a Level Ascension Ritual to continue accumulating Character Experience. I looted the creature as I had done the day before with the bandits, hoping it might provide something that would stop the pain.
SYSTEM MESSAGE: Loot Detected Glowfen Lurker Core (Level 3) (Uncommon) Glowfen Scale x8 Luminescent Venom Gland x1 SYSTEM MESSAGE: Bestiary Entry Unlocked - Glowfen Lurker The descriptions of the items provided no encouragement, nothing that would stop the agony that throbbed up my leg and through my arm where the monster's claws had sunken deep.
I palmed the heavy glowing orb that served as the monster's core, it was warm to the touch and pulsed the same green that had once animated the lizard now disintegrating at my feet. NAME: Glowfen Lurker Core LEVEL: 3 RARITY: Uncommon TYPE: Aetheric Capacitor / Genesis Seed STORED MANA: 45/50 units ATTUNEMENT: Nature (Minor), Poison (Minor) PURITY: 78% DESCRIPTION: A biological organ that serves as a monster's mana storage and data-seed.
Its Uncommon rarity and higher purity make it suitable for a variety of journeyman-tier crafting applications. A cold numbness was already spreading from the wounds, but the relief of physical pain provided little comfort as I examined the damage. Veins of dark, sickly purple spread from both injuries like a spider's web. Poison. SYSTEM MESSAGE: WARNING - Venom Detected STATUS EFFECT: Poisoned DESCRIPTION: The Glowfen Lurker has injected a potent venom into your bloodstream.
EFFECTS: Gradual health loss, reduced stamina regeneration, impaired cognitive function. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Seek immediate medical attention. The health bar in my readout ticked from 40 to 39, but I didn't need the System to tell me I was dying; sweat beaded on my palms and forehead, my mouth unable to produce any moisture, the entire right side of my body feeling less and less responsive.
At the current rate of HP loss, I had roughly twelve hours before my bar would hit 0 - what happened then I really didn't want to contemplate. My thoughts were growing hazier, but I felt mostly in control. I pulled up the map interface I had unlocked the day before, trying to find some indication of a settlement that might have the tools to save me. I could see the path I'd walked so far, a zoomed-out map showing major landmarks and cities I had yet to discover.
After yesterday's trek, it appeared I was nearly equidistant from Kelna to the west and Eastwatch back the way I'd come. Whichever direction I chose, the timing would be tight. East to stay in Caldera, west to return home to Earth; hopefully without permanent damage. I could feel the swelling of my right calf tight against my pants as I rose to my feet, ignoring the screaming protest of my legs. Every step was a fresh spike of pain, but I refused to die here.
I bit down hard, the taste of blood in my mouth, and I started walking.
