The Talon's wrist railgun whined and swung toward Katherine. Rounds fired. The air tore open behind them as they crossed the chamber. Forty meters. Far too far. Reaching her in time would require speeds Butter could no longer sustain without Gloom. If she somehow managed it, the Talon's secondary protocol waited. Incendiary micro-mines. Canvas Serum. A cascade of contingencies designed to slow her to a statue and finish the fight. The plan was flawless. Katherine saw it all happen in agonizing slow motion.
The muzzle flash. The molten trails. The certainty of death. Click. Butter was already there. It was an edit. Literally. One moment she stood twenty meters away, right arm a void. The next she occupied the bullets' path. She moved with the soft inevitability of a Taichi master pushing clouds. Her left hand brushed the first round aside. Her forearm redirected the second. Her elbow nudged the third. The slugs ricocheted harmlessly into the floor and ceiling. Katherine's eyes widened.
She replayed it through the lingering aftereffects of the suspension fluid. Butter hadn't crossed the distance. The distance had ceased to matter. The Talon's HUD registered only an impossible discontinuity. POSITION A... POSITION B ERROR A final label flickered across his vision. TECHNIQUE IDENTIFIED: MOTH THROUGH THE LANTERN'S FLAME STATUS: CONFIRMED NATURE: NON-LOCAL REPOSITIONING. TEMPORARY SELF-REMOVAL FROM CAUSAL CHAIN. PREDICTIVE MODELING: IMPOSSIBLE. It was her father's technique. Paris Moon's technique.
The Talon felt something resembling dread. Butter was rewriting the fight itself. Muscle memory written on the void. Shoulder launchers flared, scattering micro-mines toward the dormant pods. The devices were engineered for only a fraction of a second of operation, releasing compressed plasma in violent bursts that spiked beyond the temperature of a star's core.
Their purpose was immediate eradication - a flash of impossible temperature designed to reduce anything caught within the blast radius to vapor before it could react. 0. 7 His logic remained ruthless. If he couldn't strike Butter, he'd destroy the battlefield. Before they crossed half the distance, his HUD screamed. WARNING: INCOMING OBJECTS ORIGIN: UNKNOWN TRAJECTORY: IMPOSSIBLE The mines weren't flying toward him. They were already attached to him. Chest. Back. Joints.
As though the launch had occurred in reverse. A second warning flashed across his vision. WARNING: DREAM WALK DEGRADATION DETECTED CAUSE: EMERGENCY APIS ENERGY REDISTRIBUTION CURRENT OUTPUT: 61% Perception and movement enhancements dropped as vast reserves of Apis energy were diverted into defensive systems. The suit had prioritized survival over acceleration. BOOOOOOM. Plasma engulfed the Talon. Fire filled the chamber. A compressed plume exceeding a billion degrees detonated across his armor.
Golden dispersion fields erupted to life, drinking in impossible amounts of heat and force as Apis reserves drained at a staggering rate. When the fire cleared, he was still standing, dispersion fields blazing gold across scorched armor. Scorched, but unharmed. And slower than he had been a moment before. Canvas Serum flooded him. Time bent. To Katherine, the world became frozen glass. To the Talon, it became a diorama. The serum temporarily removed the biological bottleneck limiting Dream Walk.
For an objective five seconds, his body could withstand the system's true output. No microsecond throttling. No picosecond safety limits. Dream Walk surged to its intended capacity, granting instantaneous movement and perception on a scale his normal physiology could never survive. The consequences would come later. For now, he was untouchable. Butter stood twenty meters away. Katherine stood motionless beside the pods. Infinite subjective time stretched before him. He attacked.
A cascade of pre-calculated strikes unfolded in sequence. Knife thrusts. Joint breaks. Spine-locks. Precision kills refined across thousands of campaigns. His blade descended toward Katherine's neck. Butter's forearm appeared in its path. One frame contained the attack. The next contained the block. His targeting suite stuttered. A reverse-grip thrust toward Butter's kidney met an elbow that simply existed where it needed to be. A low kick collided with her knee. A throat strike met a palm redirect.
She wasn't matching his speed. She couldn't. At the velocities produced, every strike carried effectively infinite force. A clean hit would erase her. Even a graze could pulp her body. So she refused impact entirely. Every defense was exact. Redirect by millimeters. Deflect by fractions of a degree. Slip past edges. Rotate around vectors. Nothing allowed to land. From the Talon's perspective, she fought like a corrupted simulation.
Limbs flickered into existence only where required, intercepting attacks with frame-perfect precision before disappearing again. Enough. He unleashed a fusion sequence: Muay Thai knee feint, Bakom throat-rip, Lin Kuei displacement, Sambo spine-lock. Fractal violence. Butter's body flickered through impossible positions. A shoulder roll diverted the throat-rip. A palm guided the spine-lock aside. A pivot carried her through the knee. An elbow displaced the final strike. Every attack missed by less than a hair.
Every defense was perfect. And for the first time since activating Canvas Serum, the Talon's confidence began to fracture. The monomolecular blade sang toward her throat. Fool. The thought flashed through the Talon's mind as Butter raised two fingers toward the strike. His other arm was already moving, another killing blow unfolding behind the first. Even if she somehow stopped the blade, the follow-up would finish her. And stopping it was impossible. The weapon was forged from Hukan.
A perfected composite engineered by the Syndicate after decades of material science and battlefield testing. Hukan could carve through Titans as though they were poultry. It endured stellar furnaces, singularity shear, and impacts that reduced continents to dust. Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings. Nothing broke Hukan. Only another Hukan edge could damage it. His calculations were absolute. Butter's thumb and forefinger closed around the blade.
The universe pinched. SNAP. An impossiblity occured, a dead thing felt disarray. Butter had touched it with no sequential movement. A weapon could not intercept an action that never occupied the space between positions. The blade broke, and the next frame placed the shard in his abdomen. He hadn't seen her throw it. It was simply there. The weapon simply reached a conclusion it had never been designed to reach. Pain was irrelevant. Systems recalculated.
SHROUD PUNCH: CALIBRATING TARGET ACQUIRED PARADOX COST: RIGHT ARM (DESIGNATED) He would strike with his left. She would answer with her remaining arm. His sacrificed right would phase through its own disappearance and deliver the true blow. Then the calculations began to fail. Butter's glitching wasn't speed. It was reality editing. The paradox engine escalated. TARGET EXHIBITING REALITY NON-LOCALITY SHROUD PUNCH PARAMETER ADJUSTMENT: ENGAGED CALCULATING REQUIRED FORCE TO NEGATE CONCEPTUAL ANCHORING...
The strike began transforming into something worse than force, a result imposed directly from causality itself. Butter saw it forming, a tightening around possibility, a future hardening into certainty. She interrupted it. Her prosthetic leg appeared against his chest. THOOM. The violet-black kick landed in negative time. His dispersion field screamed and collapsed. Armor cratered inward. The Talon became a streak of gold, carving a molten trench through the chamber floor.
Before he finished falling, Butter was already standing where he would land. The HUD flashed. WARNING: TECHNIQUE RECOGNIZED DESIGNATION: THE BOWL TECHNIQUE ORIGIN: COMMANDER ASMA, SYNDICATE ENFORCER, FACTION 7 EFFECT: INSTANT NEURAL CASCADE. CONSCIOUSNESS EJECTION. THREAT: EXTREME The horror wasn't that Butter knew the technique. The horror was that she was using it on the dead. Her left hand curved into a perfect bowl and settled against the Talon's chest as he skidded to a halt. FWOOM.
The slap of force erupted from her palm to blast something loose from within. A half-sphere of distorted air pushed outward. PAH! A muffled shockwave punched inward. The force searched for the ghost inside the machine. There was none. The suit took the damage instead. Synthetic muscles spasmed. Neural lace ruptured. Apis conduits hissed and bled energy. Internal systems crashed in cascading failures. The Talon locked solid, a puppet with its strings cut. 0. 9... Regeneration protocols engaged. 1. 0...
Internal damage began sealing. 1. 1... His right arm finished regenerating. This would end with scorched earth. DEPLOYING: SINGULARITY BOMB YIELD: LOCALIZED REALITY COLLAPSE DETONATION: IMMEDIATE A black sphere the size of a marble appeared in his palm. It drank light. The Talon's HUD tracked the growth curve in cold, precise numbers. In nine-point-three millionths of a second, 9. 3 microseconds, the singularity would reach critical size and consume the designated region.
The Talon's systems had already selected the blast radius: the entire chamber. A failsafe designed to erase everything within its reach. The pull would rival a million black holes acting in concert, collapsing matter, energy, and structure toward a single point of impossible density. It had been conceived during one of the Syndicate's worst nightmares: the possibility of a Boundless Abomination escaping containment. Something capable of ignoring every conventional method of pursuit or imprisonment.
The Singularity Bomb had been built from that paranoia. Its purpose was simple. The device wouldn't merely destroy what occupied the affected area. It would tear the entire section of reality loose and collapse it into nothing, removing the battlefield itself from existence. No teleportation, phasing, dimensional escape, alternate timelines, hidden worlds, or metaphysical loopholes. And the Talon had just armed one inside a chamber full of civilians. The pods. Katherine. The Talon. All acceptable losses.
The Syndicate could grow more humans. Rebuild facilities. Manufacture new Talons. Butter was the variable that could not be allowed to survive another second.... The sphere darkened further. Reality around it began to bend. Dust, shattered metal, and loose fragments skittered across the floor toward the growing singularity as space itself folded inward around the tiny black orb. Butter froze. Genuine fear flashed across her face. Her pink eyes widened. The color drained from her bloodstained features.
She knew what she was looking at.
"... No." The word escaped her in a whisper. Blood dripped from torn skin as she stared at the growing darkness, horror written plainly across her expression. The pull intensified. Metal groaned. Pods shuddered. The entire chamber began sliding toward the growing singularity. Then her expression hardened. Fear remained, but something fiercer pushed through it.
"No!" She planted her feet. Every muscle in her body wailed. The suppression field still smothered the Gloom. Butter grit her teeth so hard blood ran from her gums.
"COME ON!" The floor shattered beneath her boots. Her prosthetic leg trembled violently. Violet lights raced along its surface. Warnings flashed through internal systems already pushed beyond every safety threshold. The pull increased. Butter let out a raw, furious scream.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Something cracked. The prosthetic's violet glow flickered. Then flashed red. For the briefest fraction of a second. The chamber shook. A familiar warmth surged through her veins. The Gloom answered. Butter's magic sang back. Color returned. Yellow light flowed from Butter's core, sealing torn flesh. Blue wrapped across her shoulders, stabilizing the surging energy. Red ignited along her left arm and eye, pulsing with renewed fury.
The three colors merged into a layered aura that warped light and bent perception itself. Her pink eyes blazed. Butter reached into thin air and pulled out the Aria, a worn, frayed blue sketchbook. A page tore free. From it emerged Oblivion's Maw. A colossal night-skinned wyvern, more concept than creature. Its jaws churned with a collapsing star vortex. Claws carved through the air. Reality bled toward its throat. The Singularity Bomb reached zero. It detonated. Oblivion's Maw opened its jaws wider.
The bomb, the Talon, and the expanding singularity disappeared into the vortex. Space folded inward, then fell utterly silent. The silence was a vacuum. Then came a wet, fibrous sound, roots growing at impossible speed. Katherine watched in horror as the void where Butter's right arm ended stitched itself back together. Bone spiraled outward like ivory crystal. Muscle fibers wove themselves into place. Sinew, nerves, and skin followed. A new hand, pink and pristine, flexed its fingers. Lacerations sealed.
Burned flesh smoothed over. The half-healed ruin of Butter's face finished knitting itself whole. Even the missing piece of her ear regrew. Katherine barely noticed. Her eyes were locked on the thing standing behind Butter. Oblivion's Maw filled an impossible amount of space. Its skin looked less like flesh and more like a fragment of the night sky wrapped around a skeleton of extinction. Stars glimmered beneath its scales. Nebulae drifted through folds of darkness that should not have existed.
Its enormous jaws still crackled with traces of the singularity it had just devoured. It turned slightly. Katherine yelped. For a fraction of a second, she thought she saw entire galaxies moving beneath its skin. Her body began shaking uncontrollably. How powerful was Butter? The question struck harder than the battle had. She had watched her survive attacks capable of tearing apart continents.
Watched her summon impossible weapons, rewrite reality, heal from mutilation, and feed a weapon designed to erase to a monster she had apparently drawn into being from a notebook. Katherine's breathing quickened. Her vision blurred. She squeezed her eyes shut. Deep breath. Another. In her mind, she imagined Lysander. The version from her dreams stepped forward, calm as ever, that ridiculous vampire accent wrapping around every word.
"Easy now, love. Breathe. The universe has not ended yet." Another breath.
"See? Still alive." The shaking eased slightly.
"Good girl. In through the nose. Out through the mouth." Katherine obeyed the imaginary voice despite herself. Slowly, painfully, her pulse began to settle. When she finally opened her eyes again, Oblivion's Maw was already gone. Butter was still there. And somehow, impossibly, the room was still standing. — Butter tested her body with a few rapid jumping jacks, a forward somersault, a backflip, and a one-armed handstand.
She balanced on a single finger for three seconds, dropped lightly to the floor, and brushed imaginary dust from her pants.
"Whew. That was one massive workout." Katherine's jaw dropped.
"Workout? You almost DIED!" Butter popped a gummy worm into her mouth.
"No, I didn't."
"You definitely did! Your arm got cut off! Your face was shredded! You were glitching!"
"Shhh." Butter pressed a sugary finger to her lips.
"I've been fighting Syndicate enforcers since I was fifteen. Steppers. Operatives. Talons. I almost died back then, sure. Nowadays?" She shrugged.
"This is just a game I've played a million times. Getting injured is part of it." Another gummy worm disappeared.
"First rule: beat them at your weakest. Don't regenerate too much. Don't move too fast. Don't show too much strength. The moment their scanners decide you're above recorded limits, they escalate." She pointed toward the empty space where the Talon had stood.
"Singularity bomb. He had it the whole time. They don't fear death. He only used it because I crossed a threshold. Bowl Technique. Moth Step. Too many anomalies in a short period." Butter scratched her cheek.
"If I'd started glowing like a supernova, they'd have called in something worse. Null-Beacons. Causality Scramblers. The kind of stuff that leaves you scattered across seventeen dimensions while everyone else gets shoved back into a pod." The realization settled over Katherine. Butter's constant claims that she wasn't that strong suddenly sounded less like humility and more like strategy. She hadn't been hiding weakness. She'd been managing escalation.
Katherine slowly unwrapped a toffee, the familiar sweetness helping ground her thoughts.
"Wow," she whispered.
"You're... amazing." Butter grinned, bloodstains still drying on her shirt, pink eyes sparkling with mischief.
"I know, girl. I know." Katherine's thoughts jumped to Butter's prosthetic leg. She frowned.
"You held back with that too." The violet-and-black limb had shattered a Talon's arm, punched through defenses, and ended a fight with a single kick. Yet Butter had barely used it.
"You didn't want them scanning it," Katherine realized. Butter's grin widened. Katherine pressed on.
"Their Apis cores can analyze magic, physics, even anomalies. But the leg is different. If they understood what it was, they'd stop trying to kill you and start trying to contain it."
"Got it in one." Butter tapped the alloy of her thigh.
"This thing runs on principles their Apis matrices can't resolve. Use it too much and their systems flag it as anomaly class-zero. Then it stops being a combat problem and becomes a research project." She popped another gummy worm into her mouth.
"And trust me, you do not want to become a Syndicate research project." Katherine glanced around at the endless rows of pods. Point taken. Butter had fought the entire battle throttled down, hiding techniques, suppressing power, and keeping her strongest assets in reserve to avoid attracting something even worse. The realization settled heavily in Katherine's chest.
"Unfathomable," she whispered. For a moment, silence. Then Butter's eyes widened. A snort escaped, then another, until she doubled over, laughter ripping through the chamber. Pure delight, like hearing a perfect inside joke. Butter pointed at her, wiping a tear from her perfect cheek.
"See? You're getting it." Katherine blinked, cheeks warming.
"Oh, and my name's Katherine Ichor. I forgot to mention."
"It fits!" Butter said immediately.
"You're Honeycakes now."
"That's not even close to Katherine."
"Did I ask?" Katherine opened her mouth, closed it again, and sighed. Butter nodded, satisfied.
"Yep. Honeycakes." Despite herself, Katherine smiled. The fear, the cold, even the memory of waking in a pod felt a little further away when Butter was around.
"Oh." She hesitated.
"And... happy birthday." Butter froze. For a moment, genuine surprise crossed her face. Then she smiled.
"Thanks, Honeycakes." Katherine glanced down at the violet-and-black prosthetic.
"Actually, there's something I wanted to ask. Earlier, during the singularity thing, your leg flashed red for a second and-" Butter's smile faltered. Only slightly. But Katherine noticed. The question died in her throat.
"-and never mind." Butter visibly relaxed.
"Good topic change."
"Was it a bad question?"
"Very." Katherine decided she very much did not want to know why. Instead, she looked around the chamber full of sleeping pods, then back at the girl casually eating gummy worms after surviving what should have been the end of reality.
