Chương 12: Inertia Mode Activated

The Talon's remaining arm hummed with a profound, vacuum-like silence. The air around his fist died. Light bent inward, reality frayed at the edges, and Butter felt the inexorable pull of another Shroud Punch beginning to form. She couldn't outrun it. Dodging would only feed it. So she grinned. The expression split her ruined face as the Talon lunged, HUD flashing: EXECUTE: SHROUD PUNCH At the same instant, the lights on her prosthetic shifted from violent violet to a deep, humming green. INERTIA MODE ACTIVATED.
The principle was elegantly cruel. Her magic didn't manipulate force. It manipulated an object's right to move. Every joule the Talon spent approaching her was taxed and siphoned away into a frozen reservoir of potential space surrounding her body. To him, it felt like charging through solidified time. Air became diamond. His impossible lunge slowed into a nightmare crawl while the Shroud Punch's pull fought against the stolen momentum of its own wielder. The stored energy wasn't destroyed. It was being saved.
With interest. His systems screamed. WARNING: KINETIC ANOMALY. LOCAL INERTIA: 9, 700% ABOVE NORM. SHROUD PUNCH PARADOX: STILL RESOLVING. TRAJECTORY COMPROMISED. The Talon hung in the air like a fly trapped in amber, frozen mid-lunge. Butter stood. She stretched, rolling her neck through a series of pops.
"Ow," she muttered.
"Everything hurts." She cracked her knuckles, the sound echoing through the stalled battlefield like distant gunfire.
"Alright now." Her pink eyes settled on him.
"You've been a very, very naughty boy." She stepped into his glacial reach, Melody glowing around her bandages with a soft pearl-white light that wasn't fierce, merely final. Five touches. A palm to his chest above the Apis core, asking a single question. Why are you? Two fingers between the slanted lenses, revoking permission. You should not see. A thumb where his throat would have been. You should not speak. A hand over the reactor hum. You should not beat. And finally, an open-handed slap across the helmet.
Be still. Melody usually targeted souls. The Talon had none, so it reached deeper, finding the metaphysical permit that allowed a dead thing to walk, fight, and wield paradox. It ignored the suit, the archive, the machinery, and burned away the signature that said: This is allowed. The effect was absolute. The Talon simply stopped being alive. His body remained intact inside the armor, but the animating principle, the will, the directive, the unnatural state of existence, vanished. The suit became an empty coffin.
Then time snapped back. The frozen kinetic debt returned all at once. Space unpleated with a sound like the sky tearing apart. BOOOOOOM. The Talon rocketed backward at relativistic speeds, his own stolen momentum returned with interest. Amethyst and citrine light smeared across the chamber before he tore through the far wall in an eruption of buckling metal and shattered concrete, disappearing into the facility beyond. Silence rushed in. Butter lowered her hands as Melody's glow faded.
She rolled her shoulders, wincing as the movement tugged at her broken face and cracked spine, then ignored the smoking hole in the wall and looked instead into the Gloom, letting her senses stretch outward through the darkness.
"Holy Mother of Christ." Katherine stood frozen near the pods, staring at the devastation. A soft scream escaped her as her hands began to shake.
"W-What... what just happened?" Her eyes darted to Butter's prosthetic.
"A-And your leg! It changed color! It was purple, then green! What was all that? Does green do something different? Can it turn blue? Red? Pink? How many colors does it have? Do they all have different powers? Is that normal? Is there a manual?" Butter raised a hand.
"Honeycakes." Katherine kept going.
"Because if it changes colors, then-""Honeycakes."
"What if it starts flashing-" Butter smiled gently.
"Take a deep breath." Katherine inhaled. Held it, then let it out in one long, trembling sigh. Butter glanced over, trying to smile despite half her face hanging together by stubbornness.
"Hey, hey... breathe. I'm alright. Mostly." Katherine barely seemed to hear her.
"I didn't know you could fight that well." Butter blinked.
"... Thanks?" If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the infringement.
"This was insane." Katherine gestured helplessly at the cratered walls, shattered machinery, and the trench the Talon had carved through layers of reinforced structure.
"How are you still alive? Your face is torn apart. Your body is broken."
"But I'm still talking," Butter said gently.
"See? I'm okay. Just... give me a minute." Her gaze lingered on Butter's half-ruined jaw, the blood still dripping from her chin, the unnatural angles of bones that were visibly knitting themselves back together.
"This is way crazier than my dreams." Butter glanced down at herself. Several ribs were visibly trying to negotiate their return to the correct anatomical arrangement. Her spine emitted a faint crackle as reality reconsidered its earlier decision to break it.
"Huh." She poked her cheek.
"Ow." Then she looked back at Katherine and offered a sheepish smile, which was considerably less reassuring given the state of her face.
"Yeah, okay, this one got a little out of hand."
"A little?"
"In my defense, he invented a suicidal reality-punch halfway through the fight. I did not expect that at all." Katherine stared. Butter looked genuinely apologetic.
"Look, I'm fine." At that exact moment, one of her ribs popped loudly back into place. Both women stared at her chest.
"Mostly fine," Butter amended. Another crack echoed from somewhere inside her torso. Katherine buried her face in her hands.
"I woke up thinking my biggest problem was discovering my entire life was a nightmare battery farm."
"Reasonable concern."
"Then I met a woman who carries candy in extradimensional pockets, has a glowing robot leg, and punches super-soldiers through buildings." Butter considered that.
"When you say it like that, it does sound a little unusual."
"A LITTLE?" Butter grinned.
"Relax, Honeycakes. This is only, like, the seventh weirdest thing that's happened to me this week." Katherine lowered her hands and stared at her.
"The seventh?"
"Give or take."
"Holy Mother of Christ."
"Yeah," Butter agreed, glancing toward the hole where the Talon had disappeared.
"That's usually around the point people reach." Katherine folded her arms and really looked at her. The snow-white hair. The glowing bandages. The pink eyes. The way she smelled faintly of bakeries and flowers despite standing in the middle of a battlefield. The candy she kept pulling from nowhere. The bizarre way she talked. The fact she had just survived a fight that should have reduced her to a red stain on the floor. For a while, she'd been too overwhelmed to process any of it.
Now the questions were catching up.
"What are you?" Butter scratched her chin.
"Hm." The silence stretched. Katherine sighed.
"I mean... you have magic. You fight like... I don't know, some elf that learned kung fu? That would explain the obsession with sweets and the terrible social skills. I thought maybe you were just an albino who happened to be neurodivergent." She looked Butter up and down.
"But it's definitely something worse." Butter nodded thoughtfully.
"I'm a girl, I think." She pointed at Katherine.
"Are you? I forgot to ask. Sorry for being racist." Katherine's face went completely blank.
"What?" Butter winced.
"Was that racist?"
"Why in the name of everything would that be racist?"
"I dunno."
"You mean... rude?" Butter frowned.
"Aren't those the same thing?"
"No!" Katherine rubbed her forehead.
"Why would you mix up rude with racist?" Butter opened her mouth, thought about it, then quietly closed it again. Katherine studied her for a long moment.
"Be honest with me... are you even human?" Butter blinked.
"You don't really know how a lot of things in the... human world work." Butter immediately brightened.
"So... do you like gummy worms?" Katherine pinched the bridge of her nose.
"I saw somebody with heterochromia on a train once," Butter offered helpfully.
"It looked really cool." Katherine lowered her hand and simply stared at her. The stare lasted several seconds. Butter, meanwhile, looked genuinely concerned that she had somehow failed to answer the question correctly. Eventually Katherine closed her eyes. She was done.
"Right," Katherine said, resting her chin in her palm.
"You're a lost cause."
"Probably."
"Please heal faster." Butter looked down at her injuries.
"Oh, good idea." The glowing bandages immediately brightened. Katherine stared.
"Can you just do that whenever you want?"
"Usually."
"Then why weren't you?" Butter thought about it for a moment.
"I forgot." Katherine looked toward the ceiling.
"Of course you did." Her gaze drifted to Butter's cheek as skin slowly crawled across exposed muscle.
"I wish I could regenerate." Butter winced.
"Oh... it's not all good."
"How is instant healing bad?"
"There was a scandal." Katherine sighed.
"Go on."
"A restaurant used a regenerator as an infinite meat supply." Silence.
"…I'm sorry?"
"They just... kept cutting pieces off him."
"They served him?"
"Mhm."
"A person?"
"Technically lots of people. It was very popular." Katherine stared.
"Why?"
"…Apparently it was really yummy."
"You're kidding."
"I'm vegetarian. I never tried it." Katherine buried her face in her hands.
"When people found out?"
"The authorities shut it down."
"Oh, thank God."
"…Mostly because it turned out to be weirdly addictive." Katherine froze.
"What?"
"Something about the regenerative proteins."
"Butter."
"I'm just telling you what happened."
"Butter."
"The waiting list was six months long."
"Stop talking." Butter obediently stopped. A long silence followed.
"…Did they arrest the owner?"
"Yeah."
"Good."
"They also arrested three food critics." Katherine slowly lowered her hands.
"…Why?"
"They kept trying to sneak back in." She looked at Butter for a long moment.
"So... there are actually people with powers?"
"Yep."
"This isn't another dream?"
"No."
"I'm so confused." Butter nodded sympathetically.
"They've existed for a while." Katherine hesitated.
"…Do dragons exist?" Butter brightened.
"Not in this dimension." Katherine immediately clamped both hands over her ears.
"Nope. That's enough."
"But-""No."
"There are technically-""No." Butter closed her mouth. Katherine took a long breath.
"I'm stopping right there before you casually tell me dinosaurs are running a bank in another universe." Butter tilted her head.
"…You'd be surprised." Katherine squeezed her ears harder.
"La la la. I can't hear you. We're done with reality for today." She looked up at the ceiling again.
"Please tell me you're making this up." Butter thought about it.
"I'm pretty sure I'm not." Katherine sighed deeply.
"Every time I think I understand the world, you say something that makes me feel like I'm having another breakdown." Butter considered that.
"Want a cookie?"
"…Yes." Butter immediately produced a packet from empty air. Katherine took it without hesitation. At this point, she had stopped questioning where anything came from.
"I sense two more enforcers coming," Butter said conversationally. She glanced at Katherine, whose face immediately went pale.
"Scared shitless is the appropriate response. Don't worry." She slipped a hand into the air, reaching into that unseen pocket dimension of snacks and impossible things. This time she didn't pull out candy. Her fingers closed around something slender, wooden, and humming with a deep-space chill. A thin smile touched her bloodied lips.
"I got something for them." The temperature dropped. Katherine saw her breath fog as Butter stood waiting, battered and bleeding, holding a secret that felt far too large for the room and entirely too eager to meet its next victims. — The two Talons entered the chamber with the synchronized glide of sharks in still water. Their lenses adjusted instantly, taking in the sterile light, the endless pods, and the lone figure waiting at the far end. Butter. As their focus sharpened, their HUDs began to scream.
Half her face was still regenerating, skin crawling over exposed muscle and bone. Through the grotesque tapestry of healing flesh, she was grinning. Wide. Delighted. Not despite the damage, but because of it. In her hands rested a dark wooden nunchaku. Their scans did not see wood. They saw catastrophe. ANALYSIS: WEAPON DESIGNATE - "HARMONY." Kinetic Ledger: Every strike was archived within the target, its force deferred until the vocal trigger: "Resound."
Perfected Intent: Every attack auto-corrected to maximum biomechanical efficiency. Metaphysical Conduit: Linked directly to Melody. Stored impacts could carry conceptual effects targeting soul, memory, identity, and causal anchors. The scan returned to Butter. Her excitement registered as calm, focused joy. She was about to perform. A silent exchange rippled across the Talons' battlenet as they analyzed her stance, balance, relaxed grip on Harmony, and every branch of the Ghost Dancing Through the Mist.
The verdict was unanimous. No predictable rhythm. Every simulation ended with Harmony connecting. STYLE: Ghost Dancing Through the Mist. TECHNICAL FLAWS: 0. PREDICTIVE FAILURE RATE: 100%. CONCLUSION: Combat perfection. Their sensors probed deeper. Her shattered face. Recently broken spine. The Gloom laboring to rebuild her. Pain hadn't distracted her. It had burned everything else away. Her mind was silent. THREAT REASSESSMENT: Transcendent. ENGAGEMENT PROTOCOL: Hand-to-hand combat. PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS: 0.
00% PROBABILITY OF ANNIHILATION: 100. 00% Butter was no longer merely a combatant. She was a conclusion. An event horizon of skill and magic. Anything entering her reach became another entry in Harmony's ledger. Even then, the Talons continued searching, cross-referencing data from a thousand conquered worlds for anything that might explain how to survive what stood smiling at the end of the chamber.
