Fifty-four years had passed since the founding of Konoha. Clans with secret jutsu, the Uchiha, Hyuga, Sarutobi, Ino-Shika-Cho, and many others, remained active throughout the village, preserving their heritage and pride. Yet of the Senju clan, the world knew only of Tsunade, wandering somewhere far away. The Senju clan had not been wiped out. Under the iron will of the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, they had chosen to dissolve themselves. Senju Touka still remembered that moonless night, when the air felt so heavy.
The candlelight cast massive, swaying shadows behind the two leaders, turning the traditional tatami room into a realm of ghosts and phantoms. Hashirama sat in the place of honor. The gentle, all-encompassing warmth he usually gave off was gone, replaced by a suffocating, absolute silence. He still carried the lingering scents of unwashed smoke and battlefield dirt. Deep within him lay a dense, heavy exhaustion and grief. Touka knew what it was.
Only a short time before, he had personally put an end to Madara Uchiha, his lifelong rival, his closest friend, his equal. That battle had not only ended Madara, but it had also drained a portion of Hashirama's own vitality. Tobirama stood quietly at his side, his silver-white hair gleaming like cold iron under the dim yellow light. His sharp, crimson eyes swept over every Senju senior elder present, including Touka.
"After Brother, I will take over as Hokage," Tobirama's voice shattered the dead silence, calm and cold as ever.
"Madara is dead. There was no other choice. But the hidden danger remains." His gaze swept over the elders before finally settling on Hashirama with a flicker of subtle concern. He turned back to the crowd, his tone growing sharper.
"If Konoha has consecutive Senju Hokage while maintaining a massive, dominant clan, how will we look to the other clans? How is this any different from the old Senju clan of the warring era? They will see Konoha not as a collective home, but as 'the Senju's village.' That suspicion will wrap around Konoha's roots like a toxic vine, stripping other families of their drive to fight for a shared future." The candle flame flared with a sudden pop, illuminating Hashirama's profile in shifting light and shadow.
He slowly raised his head. His eyes filled with griev and bottomless exhaustion. He opened his mouth, his voice raspy and deep. Every word seemed dragged across an unhealed wound.
"Tobirama... is right." His gaze was unfocused, staring straight through the walls as if reliving the final moment Madara fell.
"I killed Madara... for the sake of the village. When ideals clash, no matter how deep the friendship or how vast the power, it ultimately leads to... total destruction." His voice overflowed with the immense agony of taking down his dearest friend, but that very pain had forged an unyielding, unbreakable resolve.
"We built this village," Hashirama's eyes finally refocused, sweeping over every face present, "to end the endless slaughter between clans, so that children would never have to struggle through mountains of corpses and seas of blood as we did! This village must transcend a single clan, a single surname. It must be a place that holds everyone's dreams, a village that truly belongs to everyone. This is the best path... the only path I can find." He took a deep breath, his tone becoming firm.
"To ensure the purity of this village, to prevent it from being viewed as the Senju's private property, to tear out the roots of suspicion so every clan sees this as their true home rather than a temporary shelter..." Hashirama's gaze landed heavily on Touka.
"For the sake of the village, friends, brothers, even... my own flesh and blood... anything that threatens the future of the village can be cast aside." An indescribable wave of shock, desolation, and bone-chilling cold swept over Touka. As Hashirama spoke, an aura like a physical tide surged silently around him. It was not an attack, but a silent declaration of absolute power and absolute will. Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon. Touka felt it with terrifying clarity.
Before this force, any single person in the room, or even all of them combined, was like an ant trying to shake a mountain. Before the thought of resistance could even form, it was crushed by that invisible, crushing power and the determination he had paid for with his best friend's life. Lord Hashirama... was completely serious. He had decided that the hidden village system was the only way forward, and he was willing to pay any price for it, including the glory of the Senju name.
"Therefore, we have decided to dissolve the clan," Tobirama continued smoothly.
"Our generation may keep the name, but the next..."
"Including my own children and my bloodline," Hashirama added, "none shall bear the Senju surname." Tobirama drew a thick scroll from his sleeve and unrolled it slowly.
"Those who choose to leave the clan and change their surnames will receive compensation from the clan assets," Tobirama listed the terms.
"Money, secret jutsu scrolls, land, ninja tools... everything will be distributed according to these details. It will ensure every clan member receives far more resources and personal freedom than they could ever dream of while remaining bound to the clan." The flickering candlelight reflected the complex expressions on everyone's faces. After the initial shock and outrage faded, a subtle calculation began to take root. Losing the Senju name? It was painful, certainly. But...
Hashirama's words had shaken them, they respect him. And the compensation list was generous. Secret jutsu and wealth that once required throwing their lives away on the battlefield were now handed to them freely. Furthermore, with Hashirama and Tobirama serving as successive Hokage, the Senju's influence would remain, ensuring no one would dare bully or mistreat clan members who changed their names.
Lacking a unified leadership at the top and without a respected figure to lead a rebellion, the elders faced overwhelming personal gain, the protection of future Hokage, and Hashirama's ironclad conviction forged in blood and fire. The will to resist melted away instantly. In fact, some of the younger clan members even showed a quiet yearning in their eyes, a desire to break free from the chains of an ancient clan and start a new life. Touka looked at the two leaders.
Outside the window, the cry of a night owl sounded like a funeral dirge for the Senju clan. They had chosen the "Shinobi Village"; a dream that carried the future, over the "Shinobi Clan", the glory of the past. To erase the suspicion of a "Senju Konoha," to gain the true allegiance of other clans, and to allow the ideal of the village to truly take root... they had personally dismantled the flag that had gathered countless bloodlines and glory. In the end, Touka bowed her head deeply.
Resistance was meaningless and foolish. In the era of shinobi villages, the purpose of a clan had fundamentally changed. Without the constant pressure of external survival, ordinary clan members might actually find more freedom and opportunity once freed from the Senju name. Hashirama believed this was a better system, and he had killed Madara to prove his commitment to it. They would not be threatened for losing their name, because the Hokage was Hashirama Senju, and the next would be Tobirama Senju.
They could easily gain secret techniques that used to cost blood and sweat. From an individual standpoint, this was... a lighter, more prosperous path, and the very way Hashirama hoped they would integrate into the greater family of the "village." And so, the once-glorious Senju clan quietly dissolved into the streets and alleys of Konoha. Some chose new surnames, scattering across the village like seeds. Others stubbornly clung to their last bit of pride, refusing to change their names or leave the group.
Touka refused to give up her surname. So were Shuji's grandparents and parents. They remained as inconspicuous as those who had changed their names, Konoha was filled with ordinary civilians without family names anyway. Because of this, the Senju brothers turned a blind eye, leaving the old Senju estate to these final guardians as a small comfort for the past. Now, only Touka and Shuji lived permanently in the ancient estate.
After the first generation passed away, most of their descendants moved into village-assigned shinobi apartments or bought new homes in bustling districts. Only during holidays would a few return to the old estate, briefly talking about past glory, chatting about village affairs, and exchanging news. Shuji's father had grown up on stories of the Senju and chose to remain in the old estate after starting a family. After both of Shuji's parents fell in battle, Touka took in the nine-year-old boy.
She watched him graduate from the Academy at eleven, suffer near-fatal injuries on the Cloud battlefield at fourteen, and eventually survive thanks to Hashirama's cells. Shuji quietly sat beside Touka, looking at her face while lost in deep memories of the past. He stayed there until the old woman came out of her thoughts and signaled that he should leave. Shuji quietly said goodbye and returned to his room.
