Chương 22: Hot Pot and Whispers

Soft dusk settled over the streets of Konoha in the late afternoon. The air carried the rich aromas of dinner from countless homes. Shuji led the two around a quiet side street, stopping before a shop draped in an indigo noren curtain. Stitched in white thread upon the curtain was the simple character for "Pot." Pushing past the curtain, a thick fragrance of soy sauce, sugar, mirin, and rich beef fat wrapped around them like a warm embrace.
The dining area was modest, built with light wood tones and low tables surrounded by floor cushions. Only a few patrons were seated, their conversations kept low in a comfortable, quiet atmosphere. Unlike the loud energy of a barbecue joint, the shop offered the soothing, home-style comfort unique to hot pot dining.
"Welcome!" The proprietress, wearing a plain kimono, greeted them with a gentle smile and guided them to a booth near the back. Embedded in the center of the low table was a black earthenware pot sitting atop a small gas burner.
"Sukiyaki for three," Shuji told her, his eyes shifting across to Anko and Itachi.
"Does that work for you?" He knew both of them favored sweet flavors. Anko nodded, her eyes already glued to the menu.
"Yes! Absolutely!" Itachi offered a quiet hum of agreement, a subtle glint of anticipation in his eyes. The homey atmosphere gave him a rare sense of relaxation.
"Special cut beef, tofu, shirataki noodles, shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, crown daisy, scallions, and udon," Shuji ordered fluently.
"And one raw egg for each of us for dipping."
"Right away, please wait a moment." The landlady jotted down the order and stepped back with a smile to prepare the meal. Soon, a black earthenware pot was set on the burner and filled with a glossy, dark-brown sweet broth. The gas burner clicked on, blue flames licking the base of the pot. Small bubbles began to pop in the broth as a rich, sweet aroma rose with the steam, teasing their appetite.
The landlady returned with neatly arranged ingredients: thin slices of premium Wagyu marbled with white like frost, silky cubes of tofu, translucent shirataki noodles, plump shiitake and slender enoki mushrooms, vibrant green crown daisy, and diagonally sliced white scallions. Beside them were three small bowls of beaten raw egg. The broth began to roll and bubble in the steam. Shuji picked up long chopsticks, laying several slices of Wagyu into the center of the boiling liquid.
The pink meat curled and darkened quickly in the rich soup, rendering fat that enriched the sweet, savory base with deep flavor.
"Eat the meat first," Shuji gestured. Anko had been waiting for this moment. She picked up a cooked slice with curling edges and swirled it through the raw egg. Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation. Itachi followed her lead, carefully picking up a piece of beef and dipping it into the egg. The rich beef, silky egg, and sweet broth balanced together into a comforting taste.
He chewed quietly, though noticeably faster than usual, his dark eyes softening behind the rising steam. Shuji watched the two eat before lifting a slice himself. As the sweet flavor of mirin hit his tongue, his brows twitched almost imperceptibly. He took a sip of tea to clear the sweetness from his palate. When it came to hot pot, he still preferred clear broth or a touch of spice. He never quite got used to sweet soups.
"Here are the rest of your dishes. Please enjoy," the landlady said as she brought out the udon noodles and greens, her smile widening as she saw the three focused on their food.
"Thank you," Shuji nodded. As she turned to leave, he asked offhandedly, "The shop is lively tonight. Did something good happen?" She paused, her smile warm.
"Business is steady as usual, thank you. But over the last few days, everyone seems to be in ogood mode." Lowering her voice to share the news, she added, "Rumors say Kumogakure is finally sending an official delegation to negotiate peace!"
"After fighting for so long, seeing a sign of peace lets everyone breathe easier. People are more inclined to eat out and celebrate." She pointed toward a few nearby tables clearly filled with families.
"You see, more people are bringing their children out now." A Kumogakure delegation? The news has already reached civilian shopkeepers? Shuji's chopsticks paused mid-air.
"A delegation?" Anko asked through a mouth full of mushroom soaked in broth.
"Is that confirmed? Those Cloud ninja were ruthless."
"It is confirmed!" A woman at an adjacent table with her child chimed in, hope written on her face.
"My husband does administrative errands for the village headquarters. He heard it directly!"
"They say it is a high-level delegation led by Lord Raikage's trusted aide! With an officer like that leading them, they certainly aren't coming to fight. They must be serious about peace!" She gently patted her child's head.
"If the war really ends, our children can grow up in peace."
"Indeed, ending it is for the best," an old man at another table sighed.
"Too much blood was spilled on the border. Peace is worth more than anything." A warm hushed chatter swept through the shop, filled with relief and longing for peace. The conversation soon drifted back to the savory food bubbling before them. The landlady and other patrons returned to their meals.
"Kumogakure..." Anko swallowed her food and licked the sweet sauce off her lip, her satisfied smile fading slightly.
"Led by the Raikage's trusted aide? That is quite a show. I wonder what they are really up to."
"It is the inevitable outcome." Shuji picked up a piece of tofu and placed it on Itachi's plate, his voice flat.
"Kumogakure cannot win this war. Seeking peace is their only choice. As for sincerity..." He paused, staring into the bubbling broth.
"That depends not on what they say, but on what they do, and what price they are willing to pay." Itachi ate the tender tofu quietly, flavor soaked through to the center. His eyes settled on Shuji's calm profile. Though Shuji had lost teammates during border missions, he held no apparent hatred toward Kumogakure. Anko pursed her lips, clearly uninterested in high-level geopolitical assessment, but let the matter drop as her attention returned to the shirataki noodles.
"Whatever, why overthink it! These shirataki noodles are amazing in this broth! Excuse me, another order of shirataki!" she called out.
"And four more servings of beef," Shuji added. Outside, Konoha's lights flickered on in the deep twilight. The shop remained warm as the pot bubbled, filling the room with sweet steam. The three sat around the pot, focused on their meal. The hot broth, tender beef, and rich vegetables brought a deep sense of satisfaction. The exhaustion and tension from their training evaporated into the fragrant steam. With the last stragglers of udon finished, Anko let out a content sigh and leaned back against her cushion.
Itachi set his chopsticks down, sipping his tea in silence. Shuji raised his cup, his eyes casually skimming Anko's faded, frayed mesh shirt and Itachi's neat but standard clan robes.
"Finished?" Shuji set down his cup, breaking the silence.
"Good. We still have time." He stood up.
"As squad leader, I should properly welcome you." Anko and Itachi looked up at him in confusion.
"We are going shopping," Shuji said naturally, as if assigning their next drill.
"Refusing a captain's gift is not an option."
