King Juice The royal strategy chamber had seen Chelsea Wixx's name appear in more reports over the last three weeks than most noble houses managed in a year. King Juice sat at the head of the long oak table with trade ledgers, guild summaries, tax estimates, and private memoranda spread before him in uneven stacks. Morning light poured through the eastern windows, bright enough to make the room feel warmer than it had during their late-night meeting after the banquet.

There were still problems in every report, of course. Roads still needed repair, merchants still complained, guildmasters still defended their budgets, and half the nobility still seemed to believe taxes were something that happened to other people. Still, the king found himself reading the pages with something dangerously close to hope. Queen Juice noticed before anyone else.

"You are smiling at budget reports," she observed. King Juice looked down at the page in his hand and let out a tired but genuine laugh.

"For once, the reports are not entirely awful." Duke Valcrest sat near the window with a cup of tea in hand, looking far too relaxed for a man invited to discuss matters of national importance. Commander Hale stood by the hearth, as usual. King Juice could count the number of times he's seen the Commander seated on one hand even if he was missing fingers. Minister Corwin Vale had already covered his section of the table with neatly sorted reports, each marked with a different guild seal.

Vale adjusted his glasses and tapped the top page.

"The Tailor's Guild reports the expansion is already showing results. Sixteen seamstresses hired, nine apprentices taken from the lower districts, and one new fabric contract secured through a Valcrest shipping partner for… a Maggie Orlan?" Duke Valcrest's attention was piqued.

"Which partner?"

"Marin and Sons." That actually made the duke sit up a bit.

"That little dress shop? She somehow secured Marin and Sons?"

"Chelsea Wixx secured them," Vale corrected.

"Orlan is fulfilling the work." Queen Juice looked interested now.

"That was the dressmaker Chelsea invested in?"

"Yes," Vale said.

"Thirteen hundred gold, low interest, with repayment terms generous enough to encourage growth but structured enough to keep the shop disciplined. Since the banquet, Orlan's commissions from noble households have multiplied. Apparently, once half the court saw Chelsea wearing her work, demand followed." Duke Valcrest gave a soft laugh.

"The girl wore a dress and accidentally created a textile event."

"I don't think it was accidental," The trade minister said. Commander Hale's expression remained skeptical.

"You are all very eager to praise a demon for making rich women buy gowns. How is this important?"

"No," King Juice said, still looking over the report.

"We are praising her for turning one semi-successful shop into additional wages, apprenticeships, contracts, tax activity, and social demand." The minister moved to the next report.

"The Adventurer's Guild has also seen measurable improvement. Returned postings are down. Complaints about mismatched jobs are down. Minor injuries among E and D-rank adventurers are down enough for the healer's guild to complain about lack of business. More low-rank adventurers are taking appropriate work, and several party leaders have begun arriving early specifically to have Chelsea assign their jobs." Queen Juice leaned forward slightly.

"She is still reading postings without charging?"

"Yes," Vale replied.

"The guild pays her the agreed daily rate, but she continues donating the entire amount to the orphanage."

"Anonymously still?" the queen asked.

"In the official sense, yes. In the practical sense, several clerks know, the guildmaster knows, the orphanage matron suspects, and the rumor has begun moving through the lower district." King Juice set the page down and rested his fingers against it.

"That is not the worst rumor to have moving through the city."

"No," Duke Valcrest agreed.

"A demon who feeds orphans does soften the image somewhat." The duke raised his cup.

"But only somewhat. Still a demon." Vale ignored him and continued.

"What interests me more is how she is handling the job line. She is not merely reading the postings. She is matching work to party composition, temperament, rank, travel ability, magic type, and apparently whether the adventurers look stupid enough to get themselves killed." Hale stared at him.

"That is written in the report?"

"Not in those words," Vale said.

"But yes. Willow has a very colorful vocabulary." King Juice leaned back in his chair, the hopeful expression still present despite the concern beneath it.

"That means she is building trust with the Adventurer's Guild from the bottom upward."

"It also means armed citizens are beginning to associate her with fair treatment, safer work, and free assistance," The commander said.

"That should not be dismissed. Not that she needs an army behind her when she has Adriane Wixx." The door near the side of the chamber opened, and Lady Selene Mire entered with a dark folio tucked beneath one arm. She did not hurry, but somehow everyone in the room understood she had not come to repeat old information.

"Your Majesty," she said with a small bow.

"Selene," King Juice greeted.

"Please tell me you have brought something encouraging."

"I have brought something," she replied.

"Whether it is encouraging depends on your tolerance for Chelsea Wixx." Duke Valcrest smiled.

"I love the girl so give us the news." Commander Hale muttered something too quiet to hear. Selene placed her folio on the table and opened it.

"Her confirmed financial activity over the last three weeks is extensive, Your Majesty. The Orlan investment is nowhere near her largest movement of coin." King Juice leaned back in his chair. Selene turned the first page.

"She has acquired several neglected properties throughout the lower districts, most of them in poor condition and most of them clustered around civic care institutions, small temples, public kitchens, and privately managed charitable houses. None of the purchases are illegal. In fact, every contract appears to be unusually clean. She paid asking price or higher in nearly every case, settled outstanding liens, and covered back taxes before the city offices had time to issue notice."

The king's fingers tightened slightly on the arm of his chair.

"She has also contracted three construction guilds, two masonry companies, a carpenters' hall, and one dwarven structural firm to begin what the paperwork describes as 'urgent habitability improvements.' The estimated cost is obscene. The first wave alone would be enough to rebuild a merchant district after a fire." Selene continued before anyone could interrupt.

"There are also deposits into charitable accounts. Large ones. Several are connected to food relief, winter clothing, healer visits, and education materials. Some were made under Wixx family authority. Others were made through holding accounts we believe she created herself. The banks flagged them due to size, not suspicion. Apparently, a child walking in with more liquid gold than most noble houses tends to cause clerks to panic." Selene turned another page.

"She has made bulk inquiries into grain, flour, dried fruit, preserved meats, dairy, lamp oil, blankets, children's boots, writing slates, low-cost books, soap, and medical supplies. There are no purchase orders yet for all of them, but multiple merchants have already begun reserving stock because they believe a major royal or guild contract is forming." That silenced the room for a moment. Selene looked down again.

"She has also purchased instructional materials from two bookshops, commissioned several beginner-level primers, and asked one scribe house about the cost of copying basic arithmetic texts in bulk. The scribe master assumed she was representing a school. When he learned she was not, he tripled his price which, by his words, she smiled and handed over the coin."

"That was wise of him," The king muttered.

"There is more. She has opened several reserve accounts with standing instructions that interest be left untouched until certain named administrators request funds. The administrators are not nobles. They are caretakers, retired healers, temple staff, and in one case a woman who appears to run a kitchen out of the back of a laundry house. The amounts are not small. Some of these people may not yet understand what has been placed within their reach." The king stared at her.

"And why has no one stopped this? This could make the nobility revolt." Selene gave him a look that was almost sympathetic.

"Stopped what, Your Majesty? Paying taxes? Repairing unsafe buildings? Buying food? Funding healers? Creating accounts in legally recognized banks? The problem is not that she is breaking laws. The problem is that she is obeying them so precisely, no one can put a stop to her." Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon. That earned an uncomfortable look from the minister. Selene turned the final page.

"There are smaller movements as well. Guild wages continue to be donated. She has also asked the bank several questions about predatory lending, debt restructuring, and how much authority a creditor has when the debtor is a minor, infirm, widowed, or under institutional care." The king closed his eyes. The report was exactly what he wanted. Everything she was doing was fixing his kingdom. This was just Chelsea Wixx discovering poverty and deciding, apparently overnight, that she could fix it.

Selene lowered the folio.

"There is no evidence of fraud, treason, coercion, or hostile intent. There is, however, growing panic among builders, landlords, and several minor noble families who have spent years profiting from neglected districts remaining neglected." The king opened his eyes again.

"Of course there is," he said. Selene nodded once.

"At present, Your Majesty, my most accurate summary is that Chelsea Wixx has discovered the city's neglected problems and begun purchasing solutions faster than our offices can record them." Duke Valcrest looked between him and the king.

"Sounds like she's actually moving on her low income restaurant idea. Stew for all or whatever she called it." The king nodded slowly.

"Workers. Adventurers. Clerks. Apprentices. People who need food quickly and cheaply."

"Yes," Vale said.

"If she can make it affordable, she changes how common laborers move through the day. Less time returning home for meals, less dependence on street vendors of questionable quality, and more predictable demand for basic supplies."

"Are you suggesting she can reshape the capital with a single cheap restaurant?" the Commander asked.

"One restaurant cannot," Vale replied.

"A model can. This place opens and becomes successful. A hundred more will follow from copycat merchants trying to get in on the new revenue." King Juice's fingers tapped lightly against the table.

"Chelsea Wixx." He whispered to himself. That quieted the room for a moment. The king looked down at the gathered reports again. There were still shortages, inefficiencies, rotting dock systems, foolish nobles, and roads that swallowed coin faster than wagons. Yet for the first time in years, some of the problems seemed less immovable. Chelsea had not solved the kingdom. She had not even come close. But she had wandered into several neglected systems and immediately begun tugging at the loose threads.

It made him want to see what happened when she pulled harder.

"I want her to succeed," King Juice finally said. Commander Hale's attention settled fully on him.

"That is a great deal of confidence to place in someone we barely know."

"She's an opportunity." The King explained "If she succeeds, the kingdom benefits. If she fails honestly, we learn which obstacles stopped her. Either outcome gives us more to work with than just another report telling me the roads are expensive and merchants dislike delays." Duke Valcrest smiled.

"That almost sounded optimistic." The king gave him a look.

"Don't ruin it." Queen Juice gave him a fond look before turning back to Selene.

"What else?" Selene turned a page.

"The major importers and exporters she met at the banquet have not forgotten her. Three have quietly asked whether the crown has taken an interest in her ventures. Two others asked whether she has noble backing. One grain merchant has begun inspecting his own storage houses after Chelsea publicly questioned rain-season spoilage. A wagon master has started pricing standardized axle fittings, allegedly because Chelsea described his current repair losses as 'absurd.'" Duke Valcrest smiled broadly.

"Good girl." Hale looked at him again. The duke did not bother pretending innocence. Selene moved on before the argument could form.

"There is also the matter of the greater dragon. The A-rank recovery team has not yet returned, though they should be reaching the carcass at any time. Delays were caused by washed roads near the northern pass and increased monster activity in the area." Vale folded his hands over the table.

"If the carcass is intact, the recovered material will be worth a fortune. Scales, bone, hide, claws, teeth, blood, organs, and whatever alchemical material has survived. We have all heard that a large number of its scales were removed and sold?" They all nodded.

"Our scholars have estimated the amount she sold off was only about one tenth of what would be on a dragon of that size. The kingdom should still come out ahead.

"Has she made any reference to returning to the carcass?" King Juice asked, sitting forward just a bit.

"No," Selene said.

"Not publicly. She hasn't deposited anything in the bank that would hold scales. No pouches, bags, anything. She didn't even deposit any gold after they returned. This leads me to believe the dragon's hoard is still intact as well. Chelsea being smart probably just collected scales and some dragon meat." Chelsea Wixx, as they understood her, seemed unlikely to simply forget a dead greater dragon.

Yet there had been no visible questions through the Merchant's Guild, no request for royal protection over the claim, and no obvious preparation for additional sales. Everyone seemed lost in their own thoughts, possibly thinking the same thing. None of them knew the carcass was already gone. None of them knew the Wixx family possessed a treasure room with a few leather bags casually sitting in the manor with over nine figures worth of scales.

"It may mean she just doesn't find it worth going back for. That is even more terrifying to think about. The amount of gold that carcass is worth could go a long way for the kingdom and she doesn't want to bother?" Queen Juice thought out loud. Hale looked unconvinced.

"That would be unlike every wealthy person I have ever met." Duke Valcrest leaned back again.

"Chelsea Wixx is unlike every wealthy person you've met."

"She is unlike most people," Selene said. Her voice changing. More… Confused. There was something about her tone that made the king look up.

"You have one more thing?" he said.

"Yes," Selene replied.

"It is strange." Duke Valcrest's smile returned at once.

"Wonderful." Selene looked at her report.

"Chelsea has begun purchasing mimic larvae in large quantities." The room did not react immediately because no one seemed certain they had heard her correctly. King Juice slowly repeated, "Mimic larvae."

"Yes, Your Majesty." Queen Juice looked toward Minister Vale, who looked toward Duke Valcrest, who looked toward Hale as if the commander might somehow make the sentence less ridiculous by disapproving of it.

"How large a quantity?" Hale asked slowly.

"Confirmed purchases exceed sixty," Selene said.

"The true number is likely higher. She has bought directly from market stalls, used runners for indirect purchases, and posted several guild bounties offering far above normal value for healthy, living chest-type mimic larvae." Vale's face went still with professional distress.

"Is she trying to affect prices?"

"Yes," Selene said.

"Collectors have noticed. A few merchants are now refusing to sell to anyone until they learn why Chelsea wants them." Queen Juice asked the obvious question.

"Why does she want them?"

"No one knows." the spymaster threw up her hands in defeat. Duke Valcrest looked delighted again.

"No one!?"

"No one credible," Selene clarified.

"The most practical theories are that she intends to corner a private vice market, rebrand an existing embarrassment as something respectable, or speculate on a product no reputable merchant currently wants their name attached to." Vale rubbed his forehead.

"There is no premium mimic larvae market."

"There is now," Duke Valcrest said barking out a laugh. Hale ignored him.

"Could they be used as weapons?"

"At that age, no," Selene replied.

"They can't bite. They don't have teeth. That's why aristocrats and nobles buy them. They grow from use. Most people will keep one for a year or two and then have them disposed of as their teeth grow in. Alchemists occasionally use digestive fluid, or saliva, or their stomachs but Chelsea's requests specify that the creatures must be alive and healthy." The queen's expression became careful.

"And the less practical theories?" Selene paused just long enough for everyone to regret needing the answer. Selene raised her hands, indicating it's all speculation.

"Some involve demon rituals. Others involve demon nesting instincts. A few mention courtship customs. The least reputable reports suggest she may be using them for some form of unusual demon intimacy practice, though no one has offered a sensible explanation for why mimic larvae would be involved." Duke Valcrest set his tea down with great care while Queen Juice closed her eyes for a moment. Vale looked mildly ill.

"That speculation is worthless. We need evidence."

"I agree," Selene said.

"Unfortunately, speculation moves quickly when a beautiful demon merchant buys every baby mimic she can get her hands on for absurd amounts." King Juice tried to remain composed. He truly did. But the image of Chelsea Wixx, highest-ranking merchant in Junstruce, terrifying economic prodigy, charitable guild reader, possible future architect of half his kingdom's recovery, secretly hoarding baby mimic chests for reasons no spy could determine, proved too much. He laughed.

Not loudly at first, but enough that Queen Juice looked at him with surprise. Then Duke Valcrest joined him, and the sound grew until even Vale's stern expression cracked at the edges. Commander Hale was the only one who didn't so much as twitch.

"This still feels like a security concern." Duke Valcrest wiped at one eye.

"Commander, she is buying baby treasure chests."

"Yes. Every single one she can."

"That makes it funnier!" The duke retorted. King Juice drew a long breath and eventually managed to settle himself. His problems had not vanished. Chelsea Wixx might yet become a nightmare. She might destabilize markets, offend nobles, attract enemies, or build something too large for anyone to control. Yet beneath all of that uncertainty, the king felt the same optimism returning. For once, something in his kingdom was moving.

"Continue watching her," he said.

"Quietly. No pressure, no royal appointment, and no offer that makes her feel owned." Hale's jaw tightened.

"And if her activities become disruptive?" The king looked over the reports again before answering.

"Then we determine whether she is disrupting something that was worth preserving in the first place." Vale's pen moved again, though he did not hide his approval. Queen Juice considered him for a moment.

"You truly mean to let her build."

"Yes," King Juice said.

"If we bring her into the palace too early, everything she does becomes ours in the eyes of the nobles. I do not want that. I want to see what Chelsea Wixx does when she believes she is only helping herself, her family, and whatever unfortunate creature she has decided needs rescuing that day." Duke Valcrest lifted his cup.

"Or purchasing." Referencing the mimics The king smiled despite himself.

"Or purchasing." A firm knock sounded at the chamber door before anyone could continue. Commander Hale turned at once. His hand moved near his sword out of habit, though no alarm had been raised. A palace attendant opened the door and bowed.

"Your Majesty, Guildmaster Willow is here. She says the matter is urgent." The humor faded from the room. King Juice looked toward Selene, but the spymaster's expression gave away nothing.

"Send her in," he said. The attendant withdrew, and a moment later Guildmaster Willow entered the strategy chamber with a small pouch in one hand and a sealed letter in the other. Her face was pale. Not frightened exactly… Just... stunned.

"Your Majesty," Willow said, holding both items forward.

"This is from Chelsea Wixx."
