The goblin's frantic squeal cut short as a black-fletched arrow punched through its throat. The creature fell face-first into the creek, silenced instantly. The groveback tortoise kept charging. Its eyes were locked onto the next source of offense: Corinne. She stood paralyzed behind Cal, her spear clutched in white-knuckled fingers, eyes wide and unblinking. Cal's body reacted before the thought to move had finished forming. He ignited [Flicker Step], the world compressing into a single explosive burst.
His hand shot out, fingers closing on Corinne's arm like a vice as he yanked her sideways with enough force to lift her off her feet. The tort's massive beak snapped shut on the space they'd occupied. CRACK! The quick displacement of air from the bite rushed outward, sending a small ripple across the surface of the shallow creek. Cal stumbled, dragging Corinne with him. He caught himself, planting his foot and shoving her toward the right-hand ridge.
She tumbled into the slope, her shoulder hitting first, then scrambled on all fours to get higher. From the creek bed, Kamari's voice split the chaos.
"COME HERE, UGLY!" Their veteran frontman drove the flat of his shield into the wet silt with a resonant boom. The action was primal, like the stomping challenge of a large beast. The tort's head swiveled, its ancient eyes finding the new threat and proceeding to attack him. Kamari planted himself directly in the creature's path, his boots sinking into the mud. The narrow creek bed became a chokepoint, and the tort's bulk filled the channel from ridge to ridge. His team moved like a single organism.
Jorik surged forward, twin hand-axes blurring as he darted in on the right. His blades hammered against the thick scales of the tort's front leg while Bryon mirrored the assault on the left, stabbing at the armored neck with rapid, probing spear thrusts. Mud sprayed from Amina's boots as she scrambled backward up the left ridge. Finding purchase on a flat outcropping, she dropped to one knee with her bow in hand, nocking an arrow without drawing. Instead, her eyes narrowed in concentration.
Cal felt the shift through [Spiritual Perception]. Her crimson aura pulsed, Stamina flowing from her core down her arms. The energy didn't stop at her hands. It sank into the bow itself, saturating the wood and string. The weapon hummed with contained power, a low vibration that intensified with each passing second. His attention snapped back to Kamari. The veteran's arms trembled as he braced against the tort's relentless chomping bites. His boots slid backward a few inches, carving twin furrows in the silt.
The man and his shield were the only things preventing the entire formation from being crushed against the ridge walls or bitten in half. Suddenly, three feral goblins rushed screeching from the undergrowth to Cal's right. But he'd already known they were there. His [Spiritual Perception] had tracked their approach, three sparks circling through the dense foliage during the chaos. His body sprang into action before their cries even reached Corinne's ears.
[Flicker Step] [Breaching Thrust] Cal's spear punched through the first goblin's sternum, killing it mid-shriek. He ripped the blade free and pivoted, driving the tip into the second creature's throat before it could leap. Skidding to a halt, the third goblin stared with wide yellow eyes. Too slow. An elegant thrust slid the iron tip just below the ribcage, angling up into the heart. The creature's cry died in a gurgle as it collapsed. Three strikes. Three corpses.
He turned, his breath steady, and found Corinne staring at him from her position on the ridge, mouth hanging open. A sickening crunch sounded from the creek bed below, and Bryon's scream shattered the moment. Cal whipped his head around. Bryon stumbled backward, blood spraying from his left hand. Three of his fingers were gone, sheared off at the third knuckle. The tort's beak clamped down, fragments of bone and flesh caught between its ridges.
"BRYON!" Senna cried out. She abandoned her position near Amina and tore down the left embankment, her healer's satchel bouncing on her hip. Jorik let out a guttural roar, a sound torn from the depths of his lungs. He sliced both hand-axes into the right side of the tort's thick neck, drawing blood and the beast's ire. The creature's head twisted back, its beak snapping toward the berserker as he defended. Amina drew. The bow released its stored energy with a deep thrum that split the air.
The arrow flashed across the creek bed, leaving a faint tracer of red light in its wake. It struck the exposed left side of the neck. Impact shattered the shaft, kinetic force blasting a ragged and shallow crater into the beast's leathery hide. Splinters and dark blood sprayed, but the dense muscle beneath held firm. Agony and fury erupted from the tort in a high-pitched wail that rang in Cal's ears. Its earthy crimson aura burned into a more violent maroon, eyes glowing with baleful light.
Pillar-like feet braced as the tortoise coiled its long neck around the wound, then whipped out. The huge head lashed sideways, striking with blinding speed and catching Jorik before he could adjust his axes. Beak slammed into ribs. The impact launched him through the air. His body cleared the creek bed, sailed up and over the right ridge, and smashed into a thick oak with bone-breaking force. His axes tumbled from limp fingers as he slumped to the ground, motionless.
Cal's Impartment-powered [Combat Analysis] processed the reality of the battlefield in a flash. Kamari was alone in the creek. His shield held firm, but the rage had increased the tort's strength. He'd be overwhelmed without his skirmishers. Amina nocked another arrow, but she'd need time to do actual damage. Bryon was crippled and bleeding. Senna's hands were full. Jorik was down. They needed his help. He sprinted to the edge of the ridge and ignited [Dash].
The Ability surged through his legs, channeling the explosive force into a leap. He cleared the gap of the creek bed in a violent arc, slamming down onto the tort's massive shell. The surface was slick with moss, and his boots slipped. His [Balance] Skill surged, his body making minute micro-adjustments to correct. He leaned into the momentum and charged across the shifting topography, weaving between the saplings growing from the shell.
Each tree became a pivot point, his feet using them to redirect his trajectory without breaking stride. Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. The wounded neck was ahead, blood still streaming from Amina's arrow. Cal launched into the air. He tucked into a twisting flip, spinning horizontally, his body rotating five hundred forty degrees. The world became a blur of green and brown. The move aligned his spear, winding up the muscles of his core with rotational energy.
He ignited [Crimson Overdrive]. His aura flared into blazing light. A corona of spiritual fire erupted from him, painting the creek bed and his team red. The meridian liner elixir boiled away as the energy surged through his channels, the protective coating evaporating under the pressure. Cal landed. The impact drove his boots into the mud of the creek bed, his legs absorbing the force.
The kinetic energy from the [Acrobatics] flowed seamlessly into the first stage of [Lancing River], his Intent shaping the cascade as he harnessed the momentum. Legs. Hips. Core. Shoulder. Arms. The transfer of motion culminated in an unstoppable strike. His body accelerated forward as his spear plunged into the wound. The tip sheared through meat, severed arteries, and found the spine. The amplified force drove it deep, cracking vertebrae with a final snap. The tort's attack cut off mid-bite. Its legs buckled.
The massive body collapsed into the creek with a thunderous crash that sent a wave of water and silt surging up the banks. The shell settled, the glowing eyes fading to lifeless black. Cal stood next to the corpse, his breath coming in ragged gasps. His aura flickered and died as he released it, the crimson light guttering out. With the meridian liner exhausted, he couldn't perform another [Flicker Step] safely if he wanted to. Barely made it. The clearing fell into silence.
[New Skill Gained: Jumping (F) - Novice] [Your proficiency with Acrobatics (F) has increased to Practiced] [Your proficiency with Crimson Overdrive (F) has increased to Practiced] Kamari stood in the creek, his shield still raised, staring at Cal with his mouth slightly ajar. Amina's bow was half-drawn, frozen in place. Bryon clutched his mangled hand, his face drained of color, his eyes locked on the tort's corpse.
Senna rushed to kneel next to Jorik's unconscious body on the far side of the creek, her hands glowing faintly green as she worked.
"YES!" Corinne threw her arms into the air and let out a piercing whoop that rang through the battlefield. She slid down the ridge, her boots slipping on the loose earth.
"That was incredible! You have to teach me that! How did you even do that? I thought your channels were—" Cal raised his hand, stopping her mid-sentence.
"A temporary fix from Aurelian that I've already used up. Time for that later." His eyes took in the area, settling on Senna.
"First, we need to make sure everyone is stable." He nodded toward the healer, who had returned her attention to Jorik and his wheezing breaths. Corinne's excitement faltered. She nodded quickly, her voice subdued.
"Right. Of course." Cal stepped around the behemoth, making his way past Kamari and to Senna's side. The healer knelt beside Jorik, pressing her left hand to his sternum. It began to glow with a soft verdant luminescence, while her right retrieved several dried herbs from her pouch. Arranging them on his breast, she ignited her free hand with matching energy, ramping up the brilliance as she seemed to push the magic into his sternum. The herbs dissolved, their physical forms breaking down into raw essence.
The green light cannibalized the spirit herbs' energy, feeding it into the glowing construct Senna had formed over Jorik's chest. His wheezing breaths steadied and color slowly returned to his face. After a long moment, Senna removed her hands and looked up at Kamari, who had finally climbed the ridge to stand beside her. She gave a reassuring nod. Kamari sagged his shoulders in relief. Cal's curiosity overrode his fatigue now that Jorik was stabilized.
"You're good at your work, Senna. Is that Spell something you'd be willing to let me see the runic structure for?" She met his eyes, her expression firm but kind.
"I'm 'fraid I cannot do that, Cal. I'm oathsworn to my mentor. This knowledge is my livelihood, passed down through a promise." She looked at him a little deeper.
"You're new to spellcasting, aren't you?"
"Yes."
"You'll come to find that this is the way of most magecraft. Whether it's a backwoods healer or a world-spanning Guild, most magical knowledge is locked behind oaths." She paused, her eyes narrowing slightly.
"Strange that you've any magical knowledge and not know that." Cal kept his face neutral.
"My master is… eccentric." Her lips twitched.
"That's one word for Aurelian Veil." She turned back to Jorik, who let out a ragged cough as he regained consciousness. Kamari offered a hand, which the man took and forced himself to his feet. His knees buckled and his balance failed, forcing him to slap a palm against the tree trunk behind him to stay upright, but he refused to go down. He took in the scene, then gave Cal a grim nod before bending to retrieve his axes.
Senna immediately pivoted to Bryon who sat slumped against the opposite ridge, his face pale and slick with sweat. She jogged down and over to kneel beside him, an emerald light kindling around her palms again. The glow was different from before: thicker, more concentrated.
"This is going to hurt," she said. Bryon nodded, gritting his teeth.
"Do it." Senna placed her hands over his mangled fingers. The emerald light pulsed, and a ragged howl tore through the clearing. Cal turned away, giving the man his privacy. He found Kamari standing near the tortoise's head, his boot resting on the cracked beak that had nearly taken Jorik's life. Kamari looked up, his dark eyes serious.
"I've led teams into the deep woods for twenty years." He gestured to his two injured warriors.
"Another ten seconds, and I'd be burying them. Maybe all of us."
"Don't give me that much credit," Cal said, staring at the big carcass to avoid the man's intense expression.
"It was a reckless gamble because I was terrified of what that beak would do to us. I didn't have a Plan B."
"Gamble or not, you acted." Kamari walked over, his plate gauntlet landing on Cal's shoulder with a metallic clink.
"Most men freeze when things go to hell. You didn't. You kept my people breathing, Cal. That's all that matters." Corinne appeared at his elbow, her eyes darting to his chest.
"I remember that light from the tournament… that's the power that burned out your channels, isn't it?"
"Aurelian brewed me what he calls a meridian liner elixir," Cal said, tapping his sternum.
"It buys me a bit of time before the power shreds the protection. I just have to be quick." Corinne let out a breath she'd been holding, her grin returning.
"Well, quick is an understatement. The bards always sing about heroes glowing with spirit-fire, but seeing it for real? You looked like a comet crashing down. That was amazing!" Cal gave a dry chuckle.
"Let's not start composing ballads yet. I'm just glad the liner held long enough." Kamari gave his shoulder a final squeeze before stepping back. He pulled a long knife from his belt.
"We harvest now. Amina, show the girl how to check the goblins for stones. Bryon's out of commission, so the rest of us will handle the groveback." Amina slung her bow and moved up to the goblin corpses without a word, joined by Corinne who drew her own knife. Kamari caught Cal's eye.
"You know how to field dress a kill like this?"
"Never harvested anything with a shell before." Cal shook his head.
"Then watch and learn." Cal moved to Kamari's side, observing as the veteran began the careful work of separating the valuable shell plates from the tort's back. The man's hands proceeded quickly, his blade finding the natural seams where the plates connected to the underlying tissue. Kamari slipped into the cadence of a teacher.
"Blacksmiths and leatherworkers use tort shell for armor plating, as you're well aware." He eyed Cal's leathers.
"Alchemists grind it into powder for defensive tonics. The meat's edible but tough. Only worth the effort if you're starving." He pried a plate free with a wet plop. The piece was the size of a dinner plate, smooth on one side and covered in thick moss on the other. Cal stored the information away as he watched Kamari work, observing the movements, the angles, and the pressure required to separate tissue without damaging the valuable components. Jorik joined them after a moment, movements still stiff.
He said nothing, replacing his axes with a knife as he began cleaning the moss from the scutes Kamari had removed. The work was slow, methodical, and grounding. The adrenaline faded, replaced by the dull ache of exhaustion and the satisfaction of a job well done. After learning the technique on a few plates, Cal excused himself and took the opportunity to retrieve the silverbloom and cinder-sand he'd spotted earlier. The leaves were delicate, their fronds glowing faintly silver even in the dim light of the forest.
He wrapped them carefully with his preservation cloths and tucked them into his pack. The sand was coarser than he expected, its grains rough against his fingers as he scooped several handfuls into a jar. By the time Cal returned to the party, Senna had finished her work on Bryon. The young man rested against a mossy root, his face shadowed and his skin sallow, while he dug into a Vitality bar. He stared at his hand, watching fine tremors shake the fresh pink skin of his new fingers.
Kamari wiped his blade on a cloth and sheathed it. He turned to Cal, his expression grave.
"You'll take a full share of the tort, lad. An equal split." Cal opened his mouth to object, but Kamari cut him off.
"You stepped into the fire when you didn't have to. You saved my people at great risk to yourself. That earns a share." Cal paused, then gave a curt nod. Kamari raised his voice to command.
"Move out!" The team gathered their packs and their loot. Corinne fell into step beside Cal, her face flushed with excitement despite the exhaustion.
"My first contract. And we killed an E-tier beast. An E-tier." Cal glanced at her, his expression softening.
"You did well, Corinne." She beamed at him, her earlier shock seemingly forgotten.
"I couldn't have done it without your training." Cal smiled as he returned his attention to the forest ahead. They began the long trek home, the promise of safety and rest driving them forward.
