DATE: Wednesday, January 7, 2016 LOCATION: Silver Chord Archive – Lower Foundation, The Sand Castle LOCAL TIME: 02: 45 AM PST The Amy AI clapped her hands, and the entire archive reorganized itself into clean, lethal efficiency.
"Already done," she said, flashing that sharp, brilliant, slightly dangerous smile I remembered so well. The archive reconfigured into a clean tactical overlay. Three glowing routes into the Alaska Range appeared in the air between us.
"Pick your poison, Operator," she said. Then, she stepped closer, her clinical tone fading as she lowered her voice.
"But before you do… I left you something. In the personal partition. Something I recorded the night before… before Eric and Voss took me." My chest tightened.
"Play it." Amy's expression softened into something heartbreakingly human.
"Are you sure? It's not tactical. It's just… me."
"I'm sure." The lab faded. The tactical overlays dissolved. I was suddenly standing in Amy's old apartment — the real one, the two-bedroom with the Pacific view she loved. She was sitting on the couch in her favorite oversized sweater, legs tucked under her, holding a mug of tea. The timestamp in the corner read December 13, 2015 — 11: 47 PM. She looked straight into the camera. If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
"Hey, big brother," she said softly.
"If you're watching this… I guess they got me. Or I got stupid. Probably both." She smiled, but her eyes were glassy.
"I know you're going to blame yourself. Don't. I made my choices. I chose to map the network. I chose to fight back. And I chose to leave you this… because I knew you'd never stop. Not even for me." She set the mug down and leaned forward.
"The files are all here. Every thought I ever had about the Sutra Code, the Red Thread, the Thirteen anchors… especially Xasatl'aadi. I was close, Chad. So close to cracking how to sever the anchor without destroying the planet's magnetic field in the process. The answer's in the 2015 compression variant. You'll find it." Her voice cracked.
"I love you. Tell Mom I'm sorry I didn't call more. Tell John and Elise their aunt was really good at building things that lasted and that I miss watching movies and TV shows with them. And tell Olga… tell her I was happy she made you human again." She wiped her eyes, then gave the camera that classic Amy smirk. The recording ended, freezing on her final smile. The sudden silence in the digital apartment was deafening.
I stared at the frozen image of my sister on the couch, my chest tightening so hard my bruised ribs throbbed in the waking world. I took a slow, ragged breath, trying to force the lump in my throat down.
"Even The Wonder Pets!?" I asked the empty room, my voice barely a whisper. The frozen image vanished, and the AI matrix stepped seamlessly into her place on the couch. The digital ghost of my sister looked up and met my eyes directly.
"Especially The Wonder Pets!" the AI Amy admonished me, her tone perfectly mimicking the sister I lost.
"That show is a gold mine. They came up with lyrics for the music of The Nutcracker."
"Tiptoe-tiptoe-tiptoe here…" I started, my voice still thick.
"Tiptoe-tiptoe-tiptoe there…" the AI continued with a large smile, bridging the gap between the past and the present.
"Tiptoe-tiptoe-tiptoe Tiptoe-tiptoe-tiptoe Tiptoe-tiptoe-tiptoe," we sang in unison.
"You are ridiculous," she said softly.
"But, that is why I love you." I stood in the reconstructed apartment for a long moment, the weight of the goodbye crushing down on me harder than any physical fracture. When I finally turned away, the apartment dissolved. The Amy AI was back in the digital lab, waiting. She didn't say anything for a while. Then:"I can run the full tactical simulation for Mount Hayes right now if you want. Or… we can just sit here for a minute. Your call, Operator."
I looked at the digital ghost of my sister — the best parts of her, preserved and weaponized exactly the way she would have wanted.
"Run the simulation," I said quietly.
"But leave the lights on in here when we're done. I might need to come back." Amy nodded once, the way she always did when she understood exactly what I wasn't saying.
"Lights stay on," she promised.
