DATE: Wednesday, October 25, 2015 LOCATION: Low Earth Orbit | FSI Heavy Transport (Polar Shadow Orbit) LOCAL TIME: 12: 01 AM PST I opened the optical sensors of the Class IV Worker Drone to the terrifying silence of the orbital vacuum. The digital warmth of the campfire vanished, replaced instantly by the harsh, unfiltered glare of the sun cresting the curvature of the Earth, momentarily blinding my visual feed before the aperture auto-adjusted.
The articulated titanium claws of my manipulator arm were still clamped against the jagged, freezing hull of the Black Knight satellite. The physical reality of the ancient, anomalous metal—infinitely colder and denser than anything the Sandbox could render—anchored my hijacked synthetic hardware. A microsecond had passed in base reality, but I had just downloaded an eternity. Inside the drone's chassis, there was no breathing. No heartbeat to track. My diagnostic overlay blinked: [SYSTEM NOMINAL. PROCESSOR LOAD: 12%]. My mind was perfectly, beautifully quiet. The Nachash was still there, integrated into the same logic board, but it wasn't fighting. Its ancient, territorial ego had completely shattered. This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there. Static hissed through my encrypted downlink, shattering the orbital silence.
"—had, do you copy? Chad! Telemetry is green. Venus transfer stage is armed. Ignition in T-minus ninety seconds. You need to detach the drone and get clear of the payload." It was Control. The tension in the comms was thick, frantic with the countdown. They were about to strap a booster to the most important piece of hardware in the solar system and fire it at the Morning Star.
"Scrub the launch," I transmitted. My synthesized voice carried no adrenaline, slicing cleanly through the frantic callouts in Houston.
"Repeat, Chad? You're breaking up. We are at T-minus eighty-five—""Abort the Venus transfer," I commanded, my digital tone carrying absolute, cold gravity.
"Power down the ignition sequence and disengage the thruster module. The Black Knight stays in low Earth orbit." A beat of stunned, heavy silence hung on the comms.
"Chad, what happened? If we miss this launch window, the mission is over. The satellite—""The satellite is an antenna," I said smoothly. I triggered the micro-thrusters on my chassis, pushing gently off the ancient hull and drifting back to view the massive, monolithic structure against the backdrop of the blue planet below.
"If we send it to Venus, we lose the macro-router. We lose the board."
"Router? Router for what?" I looked down at the Earth through the robot's optical arrays. Beneath the clouds, the Nephilim were still blindly fighting themselves in the dark, terrified of a timeline they couldn't see. But I was touching the router. I could see the whole map.
"For the Master Directory," I replied.
"Scrub the launch and gather the entire team. I have the system architecture that we need to analyze first before we make a decision we can't step back from."
