The second ground session was in a different complex.
The academy's training station kept three corridor systems built to different architectural standards — Sol Confederation, Vaskarr territorial, free-floating orbital — and the instructor rotated the formation through them on a schedule that was not random, because nothing the instructor did was random, and the second session put 7-Delta into the orbital configuration: curved passages, no true corners, sightlines that bent and gave back nothing, a geometry built by people who had decided long ago that a station which could be defended along straight lines was a station that would eventually be taken along them.
The Confederation corridors had been bad. The orbital ones were worse, and worse in a specific way, and the specific way had Cirus's name on it before the session began. Cirus operated, in the frame, on a phase the others did not have and did not need. Before commitment — before the resonance rifle fired, before RAZORWIND moved to the line he had chosen — Cirus ran a pre-calculation. A geometry-building interval.
The cockpit gave him the time for it: the sensor feed resolved, the firing solution assembled, and in the fractional pause between the solution and the trigger Cirus verified, ran the half-second read that confirmed the commitment against the model before he made it. In the frame the half-second was free.
The cockpit's tempo had room in it for the verification, and the verification was why Cirus, when he committed, committed correctly — why the resonance rifle, tuned over a year to the exact register of a cadet who had been told his whole life that his configuration was a defect, put its shots where the geometry said and not where the panic said. The pre-calc was the discipline that had made the defect a property.
It was the wing-bow inverted: not a measurement of how far he fell short, but the interval in which he made certain he would not. The orbital corridor did not give him the half-second. * It went wrong in the third exercise. The first two he had managed — slowly, at a cost the element absorbed, the instructor logging the cost without comment — by finding the half-second where the geometry allowed it, the rare straight stretch, the moment the curve opened enough to model.
But the third exercise was a dynamic-entry drill, a contested breach into a pressurized section, and dynamic entry was the pure case of the thing the orbital geometry made worst: immediate decision from incomplete information, the breach committing the element before the section resolved, no straight line anywhere and no pause the tempo allowed.
Cirus took point on the breach because the rotation put him there, and the rotation put him there because the instructor had read the formation's shape in two sessions and had placed the cadet with the pre-calc problem at the position where the pre-calc problem could not hide. The element stacked. The breach signal came.
And in the quarter-second between the signal and the entry — the quarter-second where the section beyond the breach was unresolved, where the commitment had to be made into information he did not have — Cirus's system reached for the half-second verification that was not there, found the geometry gave it nothing to verify against, and did the thing it did. It froze. Not long. The freeze had never been long.
It was a window, a perceptible pause, the system holding at the threshold of a commitment it could not verify, and in the frame the window was survivable because the cockpit tempo had slack in it and the formation had built protocols around the slack. In the orbital corridor, on a dynamic breach, the window was the difference between an element that entered as one body and an element that entered with a hole in it where its point should have been.
Krell'va, second in the stack, read the hole — read it with the instinct the Howl-Node could not share, read it with his own eyes and his own body — and committed through it, took point that should have been Cirus's, and the element entered, and the scored-contact system marked two strikes against them in the gap Cirus's freeze had opened, and the drill logged a degraded entry, and it was over in less time than it took to describe and it had cost exactly what the instructor had placed Cirus at point to make it cost.
*"Again," the instructor said. They ran it again. Cirus froze again — shorter, the window narrowing as his system fought to adapt, but present, perceptible, the hole opening in the stack and Krell'va committing through it. The instructor logged it.
"Again." A third time. The window narrowed further and did not close. And the instructor, who had run this with a thousand cadets and had a specialist's catalog of how cadets failed, stopped the drill and looked at Cirus with the particular attention she gave to a failure she had not seen before.
"You're not panicking," she said. It was not what she had expected to find.
"Most cadets who lock at the breach are panicking — the threshold spikes them, the body floods, they lock because the animal underneath has taken the wheel. That's not what you're doing. You're locking and your heart rate is barely moving. You're calm. You're calm and you're still locking. I've seen panic-lock a thousand times. I have not seen calm-lock. Explain it to me."
Cirus considered the question with the precision he brought to a question that mattered, and the wings sat low — not the Year-One fold, not the bracing, but low in the way that meant he was choosing the order of true things under pressure and not flinching from the choosing.
"I am not panicking," he said.
"The freeze is not a panic response. It is a verification response. In the frame I run a pre-calculation before commitment — a half-second read, a check of the commitment against a model of the space. The cockpit tempo allows the half-second. When I commit, I commit verified. It is why I am accurate. The verification is not a flaw. It is the discipline that makes the rest of me work." He paused.
"The orbital geometry does not allow the half-second. There is no straight line to build the model from and no pause the tempo permits. So my system reaches for the verification, finds nothing to verify against, and holds at the threshold rather than commit unverified. It is not fear. It is the refusal to commit to a thing I have not checked. The refusal is correct in the frame. Here it is a hole in the stack. The discipline that makes me accurate is the same discipline that freezes me. They are not two things.
They are one thing, in two environments, and the environment decides whether it is a property or a defect." The instructor was quiet a moment.
"That," she said, "is the most accurate self-diagnosis I have had from a cadet in six cycles. It is also still a hole in your stack. Knowing exactly why you fail does not stop you failing. "I am building a new protocol," Cirus said.
"It is taking longer than I projected." * He had documented it. Of course he had documented it; documentation was the thing Cirus did with a problem, the legible cover laid over the work so the work could survive being looked at. He brought the documentation to B-7 that evening and laid it out on the common table beside the open game, and the pack gathered, because a pack absorbs a packmate's problem the way it absorbs a hit — you name it, the pack takes the naming, you work it together.
Nyx'ara came to the table last, and sat with one chair's worth of extra distance in how she sat, and Cassian noticed and did not name it, because the day-old hit was still hers and the doctrine said the pack absorbs the naming — it did not say the pack schedules the absorbing. She had told him not to make it a teaching moment. He was not making it anything. The not-making sat between them at the table, visible to everyone, remarked on by no one, the way the pack carried the things that were still in progress.
"The protocol works seventy-one percent of the time," Cirus said.
"I have logged forty-one dynamic-entry repetitions across the two orbital sessions. In twenty-nine the new protocol held and I committed without the freeze. In twelve it did not and the freeze occurred. Seventy-one percent. I am presenting the number precisely because the number is the problem. Seventy-one percent is not a protocol. It is a coin I have weighted. An element cannot stack behind a point who commits cleanly seven times in ten. The three is where the element dies."
"What's the protocol," Cassian said.
"I am substituting a faster verification for the slower one. In the frame I verify against a built model — the full geometry, resolved. On the ground I do not have time to build the full geometry, so I am attempting to verify against a partial one: a single load-bearing feature of the space, read fast, committed against. Not the whole model. One element of it, enough to make the commitment non-arbitrary. When it works, the partial verification satisfies the system and it commits. When it fails—" He paused, precise.
"When it fails, it is because the partial model I grabbed was the wrong feature, and the system knows it grabbed the wrong feature, and it will not commit against a verification it does not trust. So it freezes. The twenty-nine percent is not random. It is the cases where I grabbed the wrong load-bearing feature. The protocol does not fail. My feature-selection fails. That is a different problem and a more tractable one."
Korrath, who had been listening with the stillness he brought to a thing he intended to answer, set out the tea — the evening calibration — and spoke.
"At the forge," he said, "there is a thing the young smith does. He stands at the metal and he will not strike until he is certain of the strike. And the metal cools while he is being certain, and a cool strike is a wasted strike, and so the thing he must learn is not to strike without certainty — that is the panicked smith, and the panicked smith ruins the work — but to find his certainty faster. The master is not the smith who strikes without checking.
The master is the smith whose check has become so fast it is no longer a separate motion. You are trying to make the check faster. This is correct. But you are trying to make it faster by making it smaller — one feature instead of the whole. This may be the error."
"Explain the error," Cirus said. Not defensive. Requesting.
"The master smith does not check a smaller thing," Korrath said.
"He checks the same thing faster, because he has checked it ten thousand times and the checking has sunk below the place where it takes time. You are choosing one feature to check because one feature is faster to check than many. But the feature you choose is a guess, and the guess is what fails. The master does not guess which feature. He reads all of them, the way he breathes, without selecting, because the reading has stopped being a thing he does and become a thing he is.
You cannot get there by making the check smaller. You get there by making the check older — by doing it ten thousand times until it sinks." He poured.
"Seventy-one percent is the number of a check that is still a separate motion. The number rises as the motion sinks. It does not rise by cleverness. It rises by repetition. There is no protocol for the last twenty-nine percent. There is only the ten thousand entries you have not yet made." * Cirus was quiet for a long moment, and the pack let him be, because the thing Korrath had said was the kind of thing that had to be let to land rather than answered.
"That is not the answer I wanted," Cirus said finally.
"It is not," Korrath agreed.
"I wanted the answer to be a better protocol. A cleverer feature-selection. A thing I could build and have done." The wings shifted.
"You are telling me there is no thing I can build. There is only the doing of it many times until the building is unnecessary. That the freeze does not close by being out-thought. It closes by being out-lived."
"Yes," Korrath said.
"I categorized the freeze as an engineering problem," Cirus said slowly.
"Engineering problems have solutions you build. This is not an engineering problem. It is—" he searched, and found it, and said it with the precision of a true thing located — "it is a forging problem. The metal does not become what it will be by being designed. It becomes what it will be by being worked, under heat, many times. I have been trying to design my way out of a thing that can only be forged out of. The seventy-one percent is not a protocol I can improve.
It is a measure of how far through the forging I am. It rises when I do the work, and only then, and there is no shortcut because the shortcut is the thing that does not exist."
"The forge does not assume the outcome," Korrath said.
"The forge does not assume the outcome," Cirus repeated, and this time the table did not finish it for him as a joke, because it had stopped being a joke and become the thing the joke had always been pointing at. He looked at the documentation on the table, the forty-one logged entries, the seventy-one percent he had presented as a problem to be solved.
"I will keep the log," he said.
"But I will keep it differently. Not as a record of a protocol's failure rate. As a record of the forging. The number rises as I work. I will do the entries. I will do ten thousand of them if ten thousand is the number. And I will not present the seventy-one percent again as a thing that is wrong with me. It is not wrong with me. It is how far I have come. The rest is just entries I have not yet made."
* Nyx'ara, who had been turning her single card and watching Cirus reframe his own failure in real time, set the card down.
"You know what's wild," she said. The dry register, the warmth under it.
"A year ago you'd have brought us that seventy-one percent and asked us to help you fix it. Tonight you brought it and Korrath told you it can't be fixed, only forged, and you didn't freeze. You sat there and rebuilt what the number means while we watched. That's the thing, Cirus. Not the protocol. You used to lock at a breach because you couldn't commit to an unverified thing. Just now Korrath handed you an unverified thing — ten thousand entries, no guarantee, no design — and you committed to it anyway.
At the table. With no half-second." Cirus considered this.
"You are correct," he said.
"I committed to an unverified path. I did not freeze." A pause, and then the thing that was very nearly wonder, in the flat precise voice that made it land harder for being flat.
"The forging may have already begun. In a place I was not logging." The lamp burned over the open game. Outside, the orbital corridors waited for the next session, the curved passages that gave back nothing, the geometry built by people who knew straight lines could be taken.
Inside, Cirus folded his documentation and did not throw it away — he would keep it, the record of the forging, the rising number — and the pack drank the tea Korrath had calibrated for the moment, and the seventy-one percent sat on the table no longer a defect to be designed away but a milestone in a working, and the twenty-nine that remained was not a hole in Cirus anymore. It was just entries he had not yet made. He would make them. That was the whole of it.
