Harren sat down without her slate. He had noted, over the course of four months, that Harren's slate was an instrument of precision and she carried it the way she carried everything she needed for the work in front of her. Sitting down without it meant she had already decided the conversation didn't need it. She was going to tell him from memory, which meant she had already processed it. Three things. Obstruction referral in forty-eight hours.
The inquiry had independently corroborated three nodes in the corporate chain through sources separate from anything Cassian had submitted — the investigation had its own momentum now, moving through a structure it had built for itself. And the Harrow leg: fully integrated, not adjacent. The same case.
"The independent sources," he said.
"Protected status. They won't disclose." She looked at him.
"Do you know who." He thought about four days of silence and a routing architecture he did not recognize. He thought about the right order of things.
"Not yet." Which was true. Certain enough to act was different from certain enough to name. She held his gaze a moment, and in that moment he had the specific impression of someone deciding how much weight to put on a thing they could not confirm. She let it go.
"Go prepare your session." * Cassian gave the brief and said: "I'm not calling anything in this session." Five separate processing silences, distinct in quality. Krell'va's was territorial — he was already calculating where the pack would hold. Ren-Thalen's was knowing — she had felt the session coming three days ago and had said nothing because some things needed to arrive in their own time.
Korrath's was methodical — something internal was being consulted, the same process that preceded any decision that mattered. Cirus's was precise — he was identifying the specific variable he needed to flag before they mounted up. Nyx'ara's was the one that spoke.
"The full session?"
"The full session. Live opposition. Squad 3-Mu, eighth composite."
"This is a test," Cirus said.
"It's an evaluation. If the formation can't run without my calls for four minutes against eighth-ranked opposition, we have a structural problem that matters more than any single session result." A beat. Krell'va: "Understood." The pack decision. They followed. Cassian mounted up, put his hands on the haptic controls — warm under his palms, the grade-C hydraulics at specification, the Formation Mesh painting five green contacts across the overlay — and said nothing. * The drill started.
3-Mu opened with a standard center push. In ECHO-LANCE's overlay, five green contacts shifted before Cassian had finished reading the opening. Ren-Thalen called to the formation, not to him — running both the emotional-state read and the frame-movement read simultaneously, the data stream flowing to the whole formation as a continuous feed.
"Their squad leader committed to center at second three. Right screen has hesitation." Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation. SHADOWRUN moved toward the hesitant screen immediately. No burst — presence, proximity harassment, the technique from the standing orders. Nyx'ara had read Ren-Thalen's read and moved before anyone could name what she was doing. IRONJAW went center.
The occupying geometry, the territorial claim, the pack instinct reading the push coming and going to hold it because holding it was what the instinct said and the instinct was right. The push hit IRONJAW and the bay registered it as a structural event — THUNK of the dampeners, Cassian's chest catching the pressure wave, the haptic controls lurching under his hands. CRACK — 3-Mu's cannon. IRONJAW shoulder: 92%. In the cockpit the Forge-Bond spike — control surfaces, half-second of static, hands briefly numb.
Krell'va felt it and held the position because he had decided the position and the number had not changed that. RAZORWIND at the left corridor without a call — Cirus having watched SHADOWRUN pull the right screen's attention and solved for the under-resourced left side. The Resonance Rifle's targeting array firing: CRACK, CRACK. Two left-side frames amber. Eight seconds. Shadow-phase was at forty-six minutes.
SHADOWRUN burst through the right gap when the suppressions landed — full throttle, intake vents blazing, the EM wake from the launch rolling across the nearest frames' sensors. Forty minutes of phase remaining when she reached the first relay at twenty-one seconds. The Photon-Will Interface cooled behind her eyes the way it always did, the warmth filed and accepted. No calls.
HEARTHBREAKER arrived at the objective with its CLUNK, Korrath having read the formation's momentum and decided the moment had arrived without being told. Four minutes. No calls. 7-Delta by seventeen points. * Cassian pulled the session data. IRONJAW hull integrity: 92% after one cannon hit while holding center, the hit coming from a disadvantaged angle as IRONJAW's occupying geometry denied the approach vector. Krell'va had felt the Forge-Bond spike, held the position, and had been right to hold it.
No calls from Cassian. Eleven formation decisions. RAZORWIND at the left corridor on Cirus's own read of SHADOWRUN's harassment pull. HEARTHBREAKER to the objective on Korrath's read of the formation's momentum. SHADOWRUN's burst timed to the suppression window RAZORWIND had opened without a call. The framework had become language. The formation was speaking it to itself.
"You already know what the debrief is going to say," Nyx'ara said.
"Yes."
"You were quiet for four minutes."
"Yes."
"That was deliberate."
"Yes." A beat.
"How much of it did you already know before you went quiet?"
"Most of it." She didn't say anything else. Neither did he. She was looking at him with the expression she wore when she had calculated something she wasn't going to comment on, and he was looking at the session data, and both of them understood that the conversation had said what it needed to say. This was a version of the debrief. Ren-Thalen had not moved from her position since the session ended. When the others had said what they were going to say, she walked to where Cassian was standing with the session data.
"For the last four minutes of the session," she said, "the formation's aggregate emotional state and its tactical state were the same signal." He looked at her.
"I have been reading this squad for a hundred and twenty-five days. They have never been the same signal before." Her amber patterns were cycling at the slow frequency she used when she was choosing words carefully.
"I wanted you to know that." He wrote it in the session log. Then he wrote: investigate what produces this. Determine whether it can be reproduced. He suspected the answer was yes and that it was not something he could produce by intent. She walked away. She did not appear to need a response. * The journalist called at 2010. Cassian was at the terminal with his stylus in his hand, not writing anything, turning it the way he turned things when a session was still running in his head.
A physical drop: sealed document, courier described as someone who moved like they had been places. Personnel records for four Iron Veil contractors. All four connected to Harrow operational planning in the eighteen months before the attack. He said: "Publish when verified." After the call he sat at the terminal and said nothing for a while. Operational planning. Eighteen months before the attack. These were people who had been inside the structure when the decision was made, not after.
They would have documentation he had never been able to access through any channel he had tried. The source had held onto this for two years, or had acquired it in the interval, and had chosen this specific moment to release it to the journalist instead of to him directly. He thought about the right order of things and about why a source who had been filling gaps in the journalist's work would give this to the journalist. He thought about documentation that needed a chain of custody he couldn't provide.
He thought about what it meant that someone had decided the journalist's chain was more credible than his. He looked at the stylus. He was done waiting for certainty. When the channel opened he was going to ask. He wrote it in the log: I am done waiting for certainty. When the channel opens I am going to ask. He closed the log.
Then he made tea — Korrath's preparation, from the heating unit in the corner, because the ritual had become available to him somewhere in the first three weeks and he had adopted it the way you adopted things that worked without making a decision about it. While the tea cooled he opened the next session plan.
