Harren found him at 0910. She sat down without a preamble. She told him: a physical records request, paper not digital, filed through a colleague in station administration outside the inquiry's administrative restriction. The request was for her personnel file and the coaching contact record. It had been intercepted. He was turning his stylus over in his fingers while she spoke. He stopped.
"He found a gap."
"It is closed. The interception becomes part of the interference documentation." She looked at him with the expression she used when she was going to say something that mattered more than it sounded.
"The channels inside the institution are running out. When they run out, the pressure moves outside."
"The corridors."
"The corridors. The maintenance routes. The spaces the institution does not govern." He held the stylus in both hands and looked at it. He had been moving through spaces the institution did not govern since he was seventeen — counting exits, keeping backups in three locations, because the locations the institution governed had not been reliable. He knew what it felt like when a thing started operating in that register.
He knew what happened to things in that register when someone with resources decided they were a problem.
"Stay attentive," she said. He set the stylus flat on the desk.
"I will." She stood.
"The session is at 1400." She walked out. Her footsteps in the corridor were the same measured pace they always were. He sat with the flat stylus for a moment. Then he picked it up and opened the session plan. * The afternoon session was against Squad 1-Psi. Their pre-drill setup was different from anything Cassian had seen. Every fifteen seconds, their formation cycled positions in a choreographed rotation — no single frame responsible for any coverage zone for longer than fifteen seconds.
Standard gap exploitation was neutralized. The gap moved before you could reach it.
"Ren — can you read the rotation timing?" Ren-Thalen had already positioned herself two steps closer to Cassian than her usual pre-session placement.
"The rotation runs on a timer. But their squad leader initiates each cycle a half-second before the timer triggers, based on her read of the engagement state." A pause.
"I can read when she is about to decide to rotate."
"How far out?"
"Two to three seconds before she initiates." He did the math. The gap needed to be reached before it existed.
"New protocol. When Ren calls rotation incoming, Krell'va and Cirus commit to pre-designated positions immediately. The gap will be there when you arrive, or it won't. We run it as if it will."
"Committing without confirmation," Cirus said.
"The failure mode is committing to a position that doesn't open."
"Yes. We eat the cost on failures. The alternative is never exploiting the rotation at all."
"The alternative," Nyx'ara said, "is also never winning."
"Those are the same observation."
"From opposite directions." Love what you're reading? Discover and support the author on the platform they originally published on. Krell'va, from the left flank position he had already taken, said: "The gap will be there." It was not a question. It was not reassurance. It was the territorial certainty of something that had decided the ground would hold and had stopped considering alternatives. Cassian looked at him.
"Yes," he said.
"It will." Korrath, who had been running his pre-session hand sequence with the methodical attention he brought to all preparatory work, completed the last motion and set his hands flat.
"The forge does not move to the material," he said.
"The material moves to the forge." A beat.
"That's the protocol," Nyx'ara said slowly.
"Yes," Korrath said, and mounted up. They mounted up. * The drill started. 1-Psi's rotation ran clean — fifteen-second cycling, every approach vector that opened closing before a standard response could reach it. At second thirty-eight: "Rotation incoming." Krell'va and Cirus moved. Not toward confirmed gaps. Toward the positions where the gaps were going to be in three seconds.
Through ECHO-LANCE's overlay Cassian watched both green contacts commit — IRONJAW left, RAZORWIND right, each frame advancing into empty space with the specific quality of a decision that had already accepted its failure mode and was proceeding anyway. He held the channel and said nothing. The protocol was the call. IRONJAW hit the left gap at full advance — the frame entering a position that had been covered one second before and would be covered in fourteen.
The rotation frame was two steps into its cycling movement when IRONJAW arrived. Two steps was not enough to reverse. IRONJAW's chassis drove through the uncovered position and into 1-Psi's interior. CRACK — a panic shot, badly angled, glancing off IRONJAW's left shoulder. Hull integrity: 96%. In the cockpit, the Forge-Bond delivered the glancing hit as a shorter spike than a full discharge — control surfaces briefly static, Krell'va's hands going numb for a quarter-second before the systems cleared.
A frame in mid-rotation firing a panic shot was not a frame in a stable firing position, and the shoulder knew the difference. RAZORWIND was at the right gap simultaneously — Cirus already through, already locked and firing. CRACK. 1-Psi's right interior frame went amber. Three seconds.
"Their squad leader has identified the commit protocol," Ren-Thalen said.
"She is calling an emergency reset. Twelve seconds to re-establish rotation coverage." Twelve seconds. More than enough. Shadow-phase was at forty-four minutes when SHADOWRUN moved through the fractured center at full burst, intake vents blazing, the narrow profile threading the structural gap the broken rotation left. No EM wake needed. The gap was geometric, not manufactured.
Nyx'ara read it as such and went through at the speed where the question of whether it would stay open was answered by arriving before it could close. The Photon-Will Interface cooled as she cleared the center — the one cost she had never once considered reason enough to slow down. HEARTHBREAKER to the objective. CLUNK. Korrath locked. 1-Psi pushed for fifty seconds. Their squad leader called the rotation back online and ran it cleanly from second fifty. Impressive composure. Too late. 7-Delta by nine points.
* They were walking back when Nyx'ara said: "Korrath."
"Yes."
"The material moves to the forge."
"Yes."
"That was the protocol."
"That is also a principle of the Forge-Bond." A beat.
"So it was both."
"Frequently," Korrath said, "the accurate description of a thing and the principle of the thing are the same statement." Nyx'ara looked at Cassian. He looked back. There was a brief, wordless exchange between two people acknowledging that this was their life and it was working. Back in B-7, Cassian sat with the session data. IRONJAW at 96% after one glancing hit.
RAZORWIND's gap deployment: Cirus through the right approach simultaneously with IRONJAW through the left, the two-point commitment that fractured 1-Psi's interior coverage before their squad leader could reset. The targeting array had been solving for the simultaneous arrival since the moment Cassian named the protocol. Cirus had built the geometry before the session started and had been waiting for the call. He added to the standing orders: rotation-commit protocol.
When Ren-Thalen calls rotation incoming, IRONJAW and RAZORWIND commit to pre-designated positions without confirmation. The gap will be there or it will not. We act as if it will. At 1845 his slate chimed. Cirus had submitted a data-chain trace of the broker's access path — source nodes, routing architecture, the two Vael-chain firm connections laid out in forty-three lines of clean correlation. Timestamp on submission: 1757. He had filed it forty-eight minutes before telling him. He looked at the timestamp.
Forty-eight minutes between completing the work and notifying him was not withholding. It was sequencing. He added it to the threat file. He noted it: Cirus delivers complete, not in-progress. He had been doing this since the first week.
Cassian was only now developing the language for why it was not an obstacle but a form of care — the documentation already done before the notification arrived, which meant the work was finished before the ask, which meant Cirus had been watching for the gap and had already closed it. He added it to the file and said nothing. Then he went to the session bay and ran the rotation-commit on the automaton for another hour.
