The transition came without warning, the way most system transitions did: one moment the plaza, crowded and waiting, and the next, a quiet hallway lined with doors, each one marked with a name Zero recognized as belonging to a member of his team. Rest Sanctuary All surviving contestants granted private quarters for the remainder of the leg's conclusion. World 1 Sponsorships Claimable until World 2 Start.
Please claim Sponsorships in the System Window"Private quarters," Viria said, reading the door marked with her name.
"That's new. I like that""…Sponsorships," Miho said warily, reading the line below with more caution than Viria had.
"I saw that line too," Viria yawned.
"But what I want right now is some real sleep in a real bed—that isn't collapsing on some rocky ground inside a shoddy, hastily-built shadow dome—before I am ready to even think about that."
"No offense to you," Viria said quickly, turning in Yukito's direction.
"You saved our hide out there, and considering the state you were in, your work was really g—""None taken," said Yukito, cutting Viria off before she started digressing too much.
"I agree. we all need some real rest." They split toward their respective doors, a brief, wordless acknowledgment passing between them, the particular trust that had built across the last months allowing the separation to happen without anyone needing to say be careful. Zero opened the door to his room, not knowing what to expect.
Inside, it was not like anywhere he had ever been in the Laboratory, nor the Shattered Peaks: warm lighting that flickered occasionally from a bulb on the ceiling, a bed covered in sheets that looked well-used and lightly taken care of, carpet that smelled faintly of must and sweat. By all accounts, it should have felt uncomfortable, unsanitary, and gross.
But when compared to the hyper-sanitized lab where Zero had spent nearly twenty years, or the overly polished and gilded locations he seen in the Shattered Peaks, the room felt more comfortable than either of them. Zero tucked himself under the matted blankets. And for the second time in his life, he went to sleep.
When Zero woke up, he did not know how much time had passed. However, he knew that there were more important priorities than finding out that information. Zero closed his eyes, reaching within himself, and opened up his status: STATUS MENU: Name: Zero Race: Chimerian (Modified being) Class: None — (Unranked) Level: 32 HP: 1450/1450 Strength: 46 Agility: 54 Endurance: 62 Intelligence: 43 Willpower: 50 Talent: 25 Unique Stat: Anima — 2500/2500 Free points: 0 Skills: Adaptive Shift Lv. 5; Biological Mimicry Lv.
4; Identify Lv. 4; System Intuition Lv. 3; Spiritual Shapeshifting Lv. 3; Silent Mantis Dual Strike Lv. 2; Rabbit's Step Lv. 1 Titles: Fast Learner (#501), The Specimen System Trait: Race Evolution [Sponsorship access available: The Archivist of First Errors] When Zero mentally focused on the last line, a presence appeared in his room. It did not announce itself the way Enigma did, with bold text and theatrical interjection. It simply was.
Sudden and present in the room's far corner: a shape composed of overlapping pages, ink shifting and rearranging across surfaces that suggested a body without quite committing to one, eyes formed from punctuation marks blinking in irregular sequence." You are difficult to write,"the Archivist of First Errors said. Its voice carried the texture of pages turning." I have been trying to record what you are since the laboratory. I have failed eleven times. This is, for me, a remarkable thing."
Zero looked at it without alarm. He had filed Enigma's existence as ordinary weeks ago; a second divine presence, while new, did not feel categorically different. The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"You watch me," he said." I watch many things that resist easy classification. You, currently, are my favorite.
"The ink shifted, something like amusement passing through the patterns." I offer sponsorship. Resources, applicable to your unusual cultivation, in exchange for continued observation rights and, occasionally, your honest account of what you experience that the system cannot adequately record." A window opened, formal and specific in a way Enigma's commentary never was. Sponsorship Offer: The Archivist of First Errors Grants: Access to fragmentary cultivation theory, applicable to non-standard pathways.
Cost: Periodic narrated reflection, delivered at the Archivist's request. Duration: Renewable, leg by leg. Zero considered it.
"What happens if I decline?"" Nothing happens to you, and I continue watching regardless. The offer simply remains, or does not, depending on whether you find it worth the cost." The Archivist's ink-shape tilted, something curious in the motion." Most candidates accept sponsorship reflexively, for the resources alone. You are pausing to ask what it costs you before deciding. I find that, also, remarkable."
"I have learned to ask," Zero said, "before I agree to things."" A laboratory taught you the opposite, once."
"Yes."" I am glad something corrected it."
"No," Zero interjected.
"Not some thing. Some one. My friends."
"Yes," The Archivist nodded.
"Your friends." Zero looked at the offer again, weighed the resource against the cost, and found that the cost did not trouble him the way it might have two months ago. Honest reflection, offered to something that had called him remarkable for resisting easy classification, did not feel like an extraction. It felt, oddly, closer to the conversations he had grown used to having with Miho in quiet courtyards, except this listener could not be hurt by what he chose not to say.
"I accept," he said. The Archivist's ink shifted into something that might have been a smile, if ink could smile." Then we begin," it said, and the resource settled into Zero's awareness, quiet and immediate, a fragment of understanding about non-standard cultivation pathways that he suspected he would spend considerable time turning over before he fully grasped its shape.
In a separate room, behind a separate door, Viria sat on the edge of her bed, groggily aware of the violet light that folded itself into the shape of someone she had never met, but somehow already recognized." You've been difficult to reach,"Vethra of the Folded Threshold said, the words arriving layered, as though spoken from several angles simultaneously." Every door I open toward you, you've already opened yourself."
"Is that a compliment?"" It's an observation. I collect those, the same as offers.
"The figure tilted its head, light bending around the motion." You learned a bow exists somewhere in you, recently. You haven't picked it up yet." Viria went very still.
"I don't know what you're talking about."" You will,"Vethra said, unbothered by the denial." I'm not offering it to you today. I'm only telling you it's there, waiting as a door waits for someone to finally try the handle." A sponsorship window opened regardless, smaller and less specific than whatever Zero had received two rooms down. Sponsorship Offer: Vethra of the Folded Threshold Grants: Minor Mana Pool Enhancement. Cost: None* * Note: Further offers contingent on future choices.
Viria looked at the offer for a long time before accepting it. Something in Vethra's earlier comment sitting uncomfortably close to a part of herself that she had spent considerable effort burying.
In Yukito's room, Nocturne arrived not as light nor ink, but as an absence, a deepening of shadow in the corner that felt, immediately, less like an intrusion than like company." You did well,"the Kindly Dark said, voice low and unhurried." Holding that dome on nothing but fumes. I watched you decide to do it anyway."
"Someone had to."" Someone always says that. Most of them are wrong. You weren't." Yukito didn't answer immediately, turning the comment over with the same careful internal calculation he gave most things that mattered." I don't ask for much," Nocturne continued.
"Just watch yourself as carefully as you watched your team that night. That's the only price I'll name." The sponsorship window that followed was simple, unadorned, and Yukito accepted it without much hesitation, the offer feeling less like a transaction than like something already true being formally acknowledged.
Miho's room held the quietest visitor of all four. Ninefold did not announce itself with words at first, only with the faint scent of foxfire and old incense, achingly familiar, that made Miho's breath catch before she'd fully registered why." Last of the Moon Fox Clan,"the fox moon deity said finally, voice carrying warmth and grief in equal, careful measure." I have watched your clan for longer than your clan existed. I watched it end. I am sorry I could not prevent that."
Miho's hand tightened, briefly, on the fabric of her sleeve.
"You could have intervened."" I could not. The rules that bind gods are different from the rules that bind contestants, and crueler in their own way." Ninefold's presence shifted closer, something gentle in the motion despite its size." I offer what I can offer now. There is no restitution for what was lost, and nothing I can do will bring them back. The only gift I have to offer is your continuation of their legacy."
The sponsorship window that opened carried more weight than the others had, Miho could tell, even before she fully read it. Sponsorship Offer: Ninefold Grants: Access to advanced Nine-Tail Ascension theory, beyond the remains of clan teaching. Cost: None named.
Miho read it twice, her tail still, her expression carefully composed in the way it had been since the platform on the very first day in this world.
"Why?" she asked, finally." Because you are the last,"Ninefold said simply," and because what your clan knew should not die with them entirely, if I have any say in the matter. I have very little say in most matters. This, I have some say in." Miho accepted the offer in silence, and Ninefold's presence lingered a moment longer than necessary, something almost like a held breath, before fading back into the quiet dark of the room. Beneath her robe, a second tail began to sprout.
