The room's conditions were always the same. 17 degrees Celsius, 40% humidity, Contaminants at acceptable levels, air filtration steady. 085 knew that because the numbers were displayed on the walls: The temperature was displayed on a thermometer. The humidity gauge was located directly to its left. The contaminant reader in the corner displayed no harmful microbes present, and the air filter on the ceiling still had a year left before it would need to be replaced.
The laboratory liked numbers because numbers made everything simple. Numbers told the researchers when a subject was stable, when a reaction was useful, when tissue had failed, when tissue had adapted, when pain response crossed from informative into disruptive. Numbers turned breath into data and blood into a sample and hunger into a metabolic note in the margin of a report. Perhaps that was why the laboratory designated him as 085.
"Right arm. Raise it," one of the researchers, Valencia, ordered him. 085 obeyed as he always did. He sat on the examination platform in the center of the room, bare feet resting on a metal surface polished so thoroughly that it reflected his pale outline in pieces. The platform was not a table, according to the researchers. It was an adaptive restraint and response assessment station. It could lift, tilt, rotate, lock, unfold, compress, and administer emergency sedation from 12 different angles.
"Hold position," Valencia said. A thin mechanical arm unfolded from the ceiling. Its joints moved with a soft hydraulic sigh, too smooth to sound alive and too precise to sound harmless. A cluster of instruments rotated at the end: needle, scanner, probe, clamp, light. The light swept over his forearm first, mapping skin texture, vein placement, heat distribution, and density. Then the needle entered the inside of his elbow. 085 watched it go in. The researchers preferred when he did.
Early in his development, one of them had noted that 'the subject showed reduced flinch response when visual contact with stimulus was maintained'. Since then, several sessions had involved instructions to watch. The needle withdrew a dark line of blood. Just enough for the sample, as the laboratory disliked unnecessary waste. Then, the mechanical arm sealed the puncture with a transparent gel that smelled faintly of antiseptic and bitter flowers.
A second arm extended from beneath the platform and pressed 3 cold pads against his ribs.
"Respiration steady," said another researcher, this one called Iven, from behind the glass.
"Heart rate steady," said Valencia.
"Subject is compliant." 085 knew that word too.
'Compliant' meant good, that the session proceeded cleanly.
'Compliant' meant fewer restraints, lower sedation risk, and, if the session ended inside acceptable parameters, reward stimulation. The reward did not have a formal name in the spoken instructions. The researchers called it positive reinforcement when speaking to each other, compensation when speaking to outside observers, and enrichment when speaking into the official record. 085 did not call it anything. He wasn't ever ordered to do that. The pads on his ribs pulsed.
A small current moved through him, measured and unpleasant, causing the muscles along his side to tighten. The reaction was recorded. The current intensified. His left hand twitched once.
"Acceptable," Iven said.
"Begin dermal response trial."
"085," Valencia said, stepping closer, "Shift epidermal layer to scaled configuration pattern 17." 085 obeyed. The change began beneath the skin. There was the internal pressure first, like something inside him remembering a shape his body had not been born to hold. Then the pressure resolved into movement. Smooth skin tightened, roughened, and divided into small overlapping plates from wrist to shoulder. The scales were dark grey, dull under the cold light.
"Subject," Valencia ordered, "increase scale thickness by 12%." The pressure under 085's skin sharpened. The plates along his forearm thickened, layering over one another until movement became slightly less effortless. He adjusted the internal tendons to compensate before anyone instructed him to. A warning beep sounded from one of the monitors. Valencia looked up.
"Do not compensate unless instructed." 085 stopped compensating. The added tendon structure softened back toward baseline. The thickened scales dragged when he bent his fingers.
"Better." Valencia said.
'Better' meant the result matched the test, not that the body worked better. That had confused him once, a long time ago. The inner laboratory smelled the same as always: sanitizer, metal, chilled air, filtered plastic, and the faint chemical sweetness of growth medium from the sealed tanks along the northern wall. The walls were white, but not a warm white. Nothing in the facility was warm unless warmth was being tested. The floor was grey. The researchers' coats were white. The restraints were silver.
The glass was transparent with a faint blue tint. Even the blood drawn into sample tubes looked darker here, as though the room drained color from anything that entered. 085 had been outside the inner laboratory on occasion. There were corridors, containment rooms, nutrient stations, decontamination chambers, and an exercise enclosure with simulated terrain that could produce gravel, shallow water, rubberized bark, or packed soil. The researchers called that enclosure his environmental enrichment space.
He had never seen the sky, but he knew the word. It was mentioned in some of the recordings that he had listened to.
"Begin sensory extension," Valencia said. 085's right eye altered. The iris widened, flattened, and changed from white to a reflective black that took in more light than the room provided. The pupil split, then split again, creating a compound pattern that made the laboratory multiply in his vision. Valencia became 12 Valencias, each slightly delayed by angle and reflection. The mechanical arm above him became a forest of needles. Valencia glanced at the monitor.
"Subject has entered multi-focal visual state."
"Ask it to track." A small sphere dropped from the ceiling and began to move. 085 tracked it. The sphere darted left, right, up, down, behind him, into blind spots, through shifting light bands meant to confuse depth perception. His altered eye followed without difficulty. His other eye remained baseline. The difference between them produced a headache behind the bridge of his nose.
"Add auditory modification." Valencia said 085 altered his ears. The canals narrowed, then spiraled. Fine membranes unfolded in layered arcs. Cartilage softened and reshaped, pushing the outer ears slightly back and up. Sound became a map. The ventilation hum split into 6 separate sources. The blood pump in the sampling device throbbed beneath the platform. A researcher behind the glass shifted their weight from one foot to the other. Valencia's breath moved through her nose, slow and even.
"Subject is maintaining 3 simultaneous modifications," she said.
"Stable."
"Push to 4," Iven said. Valencia's finger moved across the tablet.
"085, develop gripping structures on left hand. Climbing hook configuration. Pattern six." 085 shifted his left hand. The nails thickened, lengthened, curved, and darkened. Bone shifted beneath the fingertips, pushing through the old structure until the hand became something that could bite into stone. The joints locked differently. The tendons tightened. The shape was familiar.
He had used it in wall-cling tests, pursuit tests, and one failed predation simulation where the prey drones had overheated before he reached them. A clamp descended and caught his left wrist before the change completed.
"Hold," Valencia said. 085 held as the clamp tightened. The transformation continued around the restraint, bone and keratin adjusting to the pressure rather than breaking against it. Sensors along the clamp flashed green.
"Adaptive response confirmed."
"Mark that. It shaped around obstruction without prompting." The clamp released. A probe touched the back of his hand. It was cold. Everything was cold unless the test required otherwise. The probe pressed between two altered tendons and sent a pulse deep into the tissue. His fingers curled.
"Pain response?"
"Within limit." Valencia glanced at him.
"085, verbal confirmation."
"Within limit," 085 said. His voice was quiet. He had not been instructed to modify his throat, so it remained baseline: even, soft, and androgynous. Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator. The probe pressed harder.
"Again."
"Within limit." The probe withdrew. For a time, there were only tests. The researchers took blood, skin, saliva, a sliver of scale, a clipping of keratin claw. They shone lights into his altered eye until the headache sharpened. They placed heated disks against his arm to see how quickly the scales dispersed thermal energy. When they administered a mild toxin into his bloodstream and instructed his liver to adapt without shifting the visible exterior, he adapted.
When they asked him to slow the adaptation, he slowed it. When they asked him to stop halfway, he stopped. He did not ask why.
'Why' had never changed a session. But obedience did. When an instruction came, 085 followed it. When he followed it well, the session continued. When the session continued without disruption, the researchers remained calm. When the researchers remained calm, the restraint platform used fewer needles, fewer clamps, fewer sedatives. When the data pleased them, there was enrichment. This was the shape of his existence: instruction, compliance, assessment, and reward. Sometimes, between sessions, he was given puzzles.
The puzzles were not like the tests. Instead, they required him to move blocks through transparent walls, identify patterns in lights, match sounds to symbols, and choose the correct door in a projected maze. Those were enrichment too. The researchers seemed pleased when he solved them quickly. They seemed more pleased when he solved them in unexpected ways, unless the unexpected way damaged equipment.
Once, he had shifted the bones of his hand thin enough to reach through a puzzle slot and manually release the prize latch. The researchers had called the result 'promising'.
"Return to baseline," Valencia said.
"Except for auditory modification" 085's right eye changed back, scales sank into smooth skin, and the claws on his left hand shortened. A new mechanical arm descended. This one held a slender silver rod with a soft black tip. Neural stimulation tool. Reward device. 085's attention shifted to it, which Valencia noticed.
"Anticipatory response observed." The reward device waited above him. 085 waited beneath it.
"Final task," Valencia said.
"Complex mimicry recall. Subject will recreate assigned composite form from memory. No visual reference. No corrective prompting unless instability occurs." A composite form meant several changes at once. They were more difficult than single modifications, but not unfamiliar. Assigned composite forms came from researcher designs, not from observed organisms.
"Pattern designation?" Iven asked. Valencia looked down at her tablet.
"Composite 29." 085 knew composite 29: Reinforced spine. Digitigrade leg structure. Dermal plating along shoulders and upper back. Secondary eyelid. Grip-enhanced feet. Enhanced lung capacity. Partial jaw reinforcement. Balance tail, short form.
"Begin," Valencia said. His spine moved first. Vertebrae adjusted one by one, clicking beneath the skin without sound loud enough for baseline ears but clear enough through the auditory modification he still maintained. His shoulders broadened. Plates formed beneath the skin, then pushed outward in smooth pale ridges. His legs bent, bones lengthening and shortening in paired sequence. Feet altered against the platform. Toes stretched, separated, then gripped. A restraint band slid across his waist.
085 did not resist. His jaw tightened as new reinforcement formed along the hinge. Teeth shifted. The tail grew from the base of his spine, unfolding carefully through the opening in the platform designed for that purpose. It stopped at the assigned length.
"Subject," Valencia said, "step down from platform." The restraints released, and 085 stood. The room changed when he was in composite twenty-nine. The ceiling seemed fractionally lower. The researchers behind the glass seemed fractionally farther away. His balance wanted the tail to move differently than permitted. He kept it controlled. The auditory modification made every monitor tone sharp. Valencia stepped back.
"Walk to marker 1." 085 obeyed.
"Marker 2." Again, 085 did as told.
"Leap to marker 3" He leapt. His altered legs absorbing the landing without difficulty. The platform sensors flashed. The tail twitched once to correct balance and then stilled.
"Repeat sequence," Valencia said. He did the process again.
"Faster." He moved faster.
"Stop." Valencia looked at the data.
"Return to platform, then return all modifications to baseline." He did as told. 085 sat on the platform. The restraints closed around his wrists, ankles, waist, and throat with soft clicks. The neural stimulation tool descended.
"Session performance exceeds enrichment threshold," Valencia said.
"Administer reward." The black-tipped rod touched the base of 085's skull. Pleasure bloomed directly inside his brain. It had no source in the body. It simply appeared, clean, bright, and undeniable, flooding the places where discomfort usually waited. His muscles loosened, breathing slowed, and thoughts softened at the edges. After 12 seconds, the sensation cut off.
"Positive response confirmed," Iven said.
"Session complete." Usually, after reward stimulation, the researchers performed a brief stability scan, released him from the platform, and walked him back to his chamber, where 085 would follow and stay in the thick darkness until his next session. Usually, nothing else happened. This time, something appeared in the air in front of him: a rectangular window, dark and translucent. Letters formed across it in pale gold light. INVITATION ISSUED Candidate 085 has been selected for entry into the God's Gauntlet.
One desire may be granted upon sufficient victory. Do you accept? YES / NO 085 stared. The researchers stopped speaking. Then every alarm in the room began at once.
"Unknown projection!"
"Source?"
"Not ours."
"Containment breach?"
"No network access point detected."
"Is it in the subject's visual cortex?"
"Negative. External manifestation. We can see it."
"Sedate it," Iven ordered. The neural stimulation tool disconnected. Another arm snapped down from the ceiling, faster than the previous instruments, tipped with a syringe filled with amber fluid. Valencia's voice sharpened for the first time.
"085, remain still." 085 remained still because he was reading.
"Do not interact with the projection," Valencia said.
"Return attention to handler." 085 shifted his gaze from the window to Valencia, then back again.
"Subject is not responding correctly."
"Dose it." The syringe touched his neck. The window flickered, like something amused by the attempt. The needle bent. The mechanical arm froze, joints locked in place with a high, strained whine. A warning light flashed, reading, "EQUIPMENT FAILURE."
"Get security to the chamber."
"Already moving." Valencia approached him again. Her face was still controlled, but the control had changed. It had become thinner, stretched over something urgent."085," she said.
"You will ignore the projection and return to containment. This session is over." For the first time, 085 completely ignored Valencia.
"085." Valencia's voice lowered.
"Look at me." He looked at her direction. There were 6 researchers visible behind the glass. 2 security team members had entered the chamber through the side door in sealed protective gear. Their suits were darker grey and reinforced at the joints. They carried restraint poles and shock devices calibrated for his nervous system. One of them had his hand on a containment collar. Valencia took one careful step closer.
"You are not authorized to make independent selections." Something moved inside 085. He looked at the window again: One desire may be granted upon sufficient victory. He did not know why the words mattered. He only knew that the question had not come from them. The security team advanced.
"Release the platform and move it to containment mode," Iven ordered.
"Controls are locked."
"Impossible." Through all of that, the window still waited. 085 had been given choices before: Left door or right door? Red block or blue block? Pursue drone or remain stationary? Shift scales or feathers? Attack target one or target two? But those choices had correct answers, as they were simply tests pretending to be choices. This was different. There was no handler defining acceptable parameters. Perhaps that was why they were afraid 085 lifted his right hand.
The wrist restraint that should have stopped him had simply decided it was no longer closed. The metal curved away from his skin and went still.
"Restraint failure! Back away from the subject""085, stop!" He did not stop. His left wrist restraint opened. Then his ankles. Then the band at his throat. No alarms accompanied those failures. The alarms were already sounding. Red lights flashed over white walls, staining the room with a color it did not know how to hold. 085's hand continued upward. His fingers approached the word YES. He paused. He still did not know why he was invited. He did not even know his own desire. What he did know was the laboratory.
He knew the platform beneath him, the restraints, the cold, the hum of machines, the smell of sanitizer, and the sensation of artificial pleasure administered when he did something the researchers liked. He had known the shape of obedience so thoroughly that it had never occurred to him to call it obedience. 085 touched YES, and the laboratory vanished as if it were all a lie.
A voice spoke from everywhere and nowhere, measured and resonant and composed in a way that made the researchers' coldness seem childish by comparison." Candidate accepted." As 085 floated in the dark, another window appeared: WELCOME TO THE GOD'S GAUNTLET. Contestant Designation: 085 Name: Unassigned Team Assignment: Pending Primary Desire: Freedom Note: The system will observe and refine.
In the dark between worlds, Specimen 085 drifted toward whatever came next without a designation beyond the number he had been given.
He was not the only one: far away, an elf with violet hair stood beneath the carved branches of a living hall older than most kingdoms and listened to another elder explain the shape her life was supposed to take. Viria smiled through the lecture until her jaw ached. Tradition pressed in from every side — robes, rituals, bloodlines, polite expectations disguised as destiny. She had been told what an elf should be since before she understood the words. Graceful. Patient. Reverent. Predictable.
Then the world stilled, and a question appeared before her in letters no elder had written. When the offer promised a path to become something no elf had ever been, Viria laughed once, sharp and bright, and reached for it before anyone could tell her not to. Elsewhere, a boy wrapped in shadows stood on a rooftop while sirens wailed below. Yukito had saved them. He knew he had. The villain would have killed six people if Yukito had not dragged him into the dark and broken both his arms.
But the cameras had only caught the shadows, the screaming, the way his power looked when it moved like something hungry. Monster, someone whispered from the street. Yukito closed his hand until the darkness curled between his fingers like a blade. Then the world paused, and something older than judgment asked whether he wanted to be seen as more than what frightened people. Yukito stared at the offer for a long moment before giving it the smallest, bitterest smile of his life.
Beyond them all, beneath a moon turned red by smoke, a girl with the ears and tail of a fox knelt in the ashes of her clan. The sword across her knees was notched. Her hands were steady. That was the only mercy left to her; that grief had burned so hot it had frozen into discipline. Around her lay silence, broken only by the soft crackle of foxfire refusing to die. When the offer came, she did not flinch. She did not ask who had sent it. She did not ask what the game would cost.
The words promised one fulfilled desire, and Miho had only one desire left large enough to fill the clan-sized void that had been reduced to screams and cinders. She accepted. Four desires. Four answers. Four lives, severed at the root. And somewhere beyond all of them, the being who had taken them watched with all its many eyes. And it smiled.
