Felicity looked at the members of the Divine Sect surrounding her, then lowered her gaze to the two trembling twins.
"Stay behind me", she said firmly. The girls nodded and pressed themselves against her back. The sect members advanced in an orderly manner, one after another, as though they were following a ritual they had practiced countless times. The first attacked head-on. Felicity blocked the strike and, with a sharp motion, split his chest open with a clean slash. The second tried to exploit the opening. She slipped to the side and drove her blade into his stomach without hesitation. A third attacked from behind.
Felicity caught his blade with one sword and, with the other, slashed across his right eye. The man collapsed to the ground screaming, clutching his face.
"Accomplice of the devil!" the fourth shouted as he charged at her with a furious swing. Felicity blocked the attack, locked their blades together, then, after two swift exchanges, pierced his chest and slit his throat. Blood sprayed across the ground. The fifth hesitated. He looked at the bodies, then stepped back along with the others.
"Pathetic", Father Leandro growled as he pushed his way through them. He drew his sword. Unauthorized use: this story is on Amazon without permission from the author. Report any sightings.
"Sweet Feli…" he said calmly.
"I don't want to hurt you. You're like a daughter to me. Surrender. Let yourself be taken without resisting. Please". Felicity met his gaze, her expression cold.
"You'll have to defeat me in a duel". Father Leandro sighed and attacked without warning. His strikes were fast, heavy and grew more relentless with every blow. Felicity struggled to keep up, feeling each impact reverberate through her bones.
"Why is he so strong?" she thought.
"Was he holding back before?" She blocked another strike and attempted a thrust, but Leandro caught her blade and, with a sudden movement, slashed her across the side. Felicity gritted her teeth, forcing herself to endure the pain. Leah grabbed Xia's arm.
"We have to help her! He's too strong!" Xia remained perfectly still, her eyes fixed on the duel.
"No. This is a trial Felicity must face alone. We have no right to interfere. Only by overcoming it herself can she grow". Leah stared at her in disbelief before turning back to Felicity with anguish in her eyes. Felicity unleashed a barrage of wind slashes. Father Leandro deflected every one of them as he advanced without hesitation. Then he charged straight at her. Felicity raised her swords to block. Leandro feinted, then suddenly slammed the hilt of his sword into her temple.
Felicity collapsed to the ground, unconscious. Father Leandro lifted her with surprising gentleness and turned toward his followers.
"Good. Let's conclude this trial". He then looked toward the execution platform. The twins were gone.
"Where are the witches?!" One of the sect members hurried over, visibly shaken.
"Father, the twins have disappeared". Leandro frowned.
"Disappeared?"
"Yes. They escaped…through portals".
"Accursed witches!" he growled.
"Find them. Now!" Leah looked at Xia.
"Where did you send them?"
"To a place far from here", Xia replied calmly.
"Somewhere they can live". Father Leandro carried the unconscious Felicity into his tent. He laid her down carefully and gently brushed her hair into place.
"Oh, sweet Feli…" he murmured in a fatherly tone.
"It's only natural that you don't understand divine justice right away. But you will. You will understand and together we will bring justice to this dark world".
