Several weeks had passed since the Battle of Camp 91. King Oliver sat at the table with his advisors, flanked by his mother Teresa and his brother Oscar. The atmosphere in the hall was tense, heavy with nervousness and frustration.
"Several witnesses speak of a true massacre, Your Majesty", Serjey said in a grave tone.
"The Golden Knights were no match for the Coalition's mages". Karl nodded immediately afterward.
"The southern lands are not that far from the capital, Virelia. If we do not act now, we risk the enemy reaching the very gates of the kingdom". Oliver took a long sip of wine, then calmly cut a piece of steak and brought it to his mouth, chewing noisily.
"And how do we know these rumors are true?" he replied dismissively.
"Perhaps the troops are simply returning after a victory". Oscar clenched his fists.
"Is it possible that you never believe anyone, brother?"
"I only believe what I see with my own eyes. You are the ones allowing yourselves to be influenced by the gossip of the common people".
"Then what do you intend to do?" Oscar pressed.
"Wait even longer?" Oliver sprang to his feet and strode toward him, his face red with anger.
"Yes, we will wait. And since you seem to have forgotten, let me remind you that I am the King, not you. Me!" he shouted in his face before turning around and storming out of the hall. This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report. Teresa immediately stood up and grabbed Oscar by the arm.
"I'll try to talk to him myself. I'll convince him to act, I promise you". Oscar pulled away with a jerk.
"That fat fool will never do anything", he said bitterly.
"With him on the throne, we'll lose the capital within a few months". Then he left as well. Felicity sat on the grass, carefully cleaning the blade of one of her swords. Not far away, Leah was sleeping soundly. Xia approached with slow, graceful steps and sat down beside her.
"You've been rather quiet lately", she said calmly.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm always quiet", Felicity replied without looking at her.
"Not like this. You barely say a word all day". Felicity slid the sword back into its scabbard and raised her eyes toward the sky.
"Both you and that white-haired sorcerer want me. But for what, exactly? What is so special about me?" Xia studied her for a long moment before speaking.
"I thought you would have asked me that much sooner. You see, the Prinz have always been feared, Felicity. Not only by humans, but also by mages, giants, elves, goblins…by every creature in this world".
"Feared for what?"
"For what you carry within. Every Prinz is born with an ancient and extraordinarily dangerous power. A power that, if unleashed without restraint, could destroy the entire world". Felicity stiffened.
"Is that why my clan was wiped out?"
"Yes. The Kingdom saw you as demons. Not because of what you did, but because of what you might have done".
"Then why did we all die?" Felicity asked quietly.
"If we possessed such power, why didn't we use it?" Xia remained silent for a few moments.
"I can't say for certain", she admitted.
"Perhaps because they were honorable swordsmen. Perhaps because they saw that power as more of a curse than a gift". She lowered her gaze.
"Whatever the reason, they chose death rather than unleashing that horror upon the world". Felicity remained silent for a moment, then looked at her.
"And you? And that sorcerer? What do you want with my power?" Xia smiled faintly.
"I don't know what he wants. I only want you by my side so that we can recover the other legendary swords".
"I saw you split a mage in half in an instant. I think you're strong enough to recover them on your own". Xia laughed softly.
"Oh, Felicity, I haven't explained myself very well. The power you carry within you is nothing compared to mine. It is something ancient, primordial. Something immeasurably greater than me or any other creature". Felicity lowered her gaze to her hands. There had always been something inside her. Something immensely powerful. And only now was she beginning to understand it.
