Halden rolled up the plan.
"Buy what you can today. Travel gear, nothing shiny. Iron (late) if you can find it. Hardened if anyone has been hoarding properly. Copper gear will not be on a Dunmere shelf." Wade pointed toward the market with his crutch.
"Arra Glen. If her shop is still standing, she has the best tools left. Do not let her sell you decorative rubbish."
"She wouldn't," I said.
"She would if you looked rich and tragic enough." Talia tilted her head.
"He does." I left before the conversation could become another argument about what I was allowed to do. Talia came with me, and after a moment Halden did too, saying he needed to inspect what metal remained in town before deciding how badly to despair. Lysa stayed at the western palisades because if she moved, three decisions would fall over in her absence. I felt her watching until the lane bent. Arra Glen's shop stood near the old dry goods corner, or enough of it stood to keep the sign from touching mud.
One front window had been boarded with a tabletop. The door hung crooked. Inside, the shelves had been stripped, sorted, and stripped again, with tools laid across the counter in neat rows that made the damage feel more deliberate than it was. Arra herself stood behind the counter with dust on her dark braid and a bruise yellowing under one eye, polishing a hammer head with a cloth already too dirty to help.
She looked up when we entered, saw my face, saw the broken axe head in my hand, and sighed as if I had confirmed a private theory.
"I told you that axe had one hard season left," she said.
"I did not mean one week."
"It met ironwood."
"So did your hands, from the look of them." Her eyes shifted to Talia, then Halden, then back to me, adjusting prices, danger, and questions in the same glance.
"If this is a heroic visit, I charge extra."
"I need gear."
"No, Cael. You need three months, a smith road, and better judgement. I can sell gear." Halden made a small approving sound. Arra ignored it with professional skill. I placed the axe head on the counter.
"Copper gear?" Arra laughed once. It was not cruel. It was worse, because it was tired.
"Copper gear? In Dunmere? Before last night I could maybe have ordered it with half payment, a good courier, and a month of luck. This morning I cannot order nails."
"I have coin."
"I assumed. Poor boys ask prices before touching the counter. Rich fools ask for Copper in a town with one cart left." She softened just enough that the insult did not cut as deeply as it could have.
"Your coin is real. My shelves are real too, even if those shelves are the ground." I did. Iron axes. Iron knives. Leather coats. Boots. Gloves. Wedges. Oil. Tool wraps. A few chain shirts too damaged or too small to trust. No Copper gleam. No ranked work that made Appraisal lift its head with enough certainty to make the shelves feel generous. Nothing that matched the pressure in my bones now. Dunmere could still sell me tools. It could no longer sell me answers.
Arra reached beneath the counter and brought up an axe wrapped in oiled cloth. The head was darker than my old one, broader through the cheek, with a reinforced socket and a haft that had been fitted by someone who respected both wood and wrists.
"Iron (late). Hardened. Woodsman's pattern, not war pattern. It will cut cleaner than what you broke and complain before dying, which is more than most men do." Appraisal stirred over the head and haft, sharper now that I had begun looking for the shape of survival inside objects rather than only the price around them. APPRAISAL RESULT Woodsman's Axe Rank: Iron (late) Quality: Hardened Slot: Primary Hand Effects: +2 STR while equipped Notes: Practical cutting tool. Reinforced socket. Below current body rank.
The last note sat under the others like grit under a boot. Below current body rank. The axe was better than what I had owned, and the one I destroyed. But I would not sell Orven's axe, only discard the broken one. It was better than what had broken, better than what Dunmere should have had left on a shelf, and still the system made sure I understood the distance between better and enough. Arra added gloves next, thick leather with iron-thread reinforcement across the palm, wrist, and knuckles.
"Iron (mid). Hardened. For rebound, hauling, bad rope, bad handles, and whatever else you will pretend not to feel." APPRAISAL RESULT Reinforced Work Gloves Rank: Iron (mid) Quality: Hardened Slot: Hands Effects: +2 STR while equipped Notes: Improves grip under load, rope pressure, tool shock, and rough handling. Does not prevent poor choices. The gloves looked ugly and stiff, with seams thick enough to rub blisters into new shapes before they protected the old ones. I understood them at once.
They were not comfort. They were a bargain with pain, delaying one version by accepting another. If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it. Boots followed, heavy and dark, with treated soles and reinforced ankles.
"Iron (mid). Hardened. Mud, stone, road. They will not make you graceful. Nothing will." APPRAISAL RESULT Roadwork Boots Rank: Iron (mid) Quality: Hardened Slot: Feet Effects: +2 DEX while equipped Notes: Improves footing over broken roads, wet stone, rubble, mud, and uneven ground. Poor for quiet movement on dry floors. The boots had iron cleats set low enough not to catch on every threshold and high enough to make polished houses hate them.
They were travel gear, not town gear, which meant Arra had already accepted the road before I had said yes to it properly. Then she brought out a leather work coat, quilted under the shoulders, reinforced along ribs and forearms, built more for labour and glancing cuts than proper battle. It was dark brown, plain, and heavy in the hands.
"Iron (mid). Hardened. Not armour. Better than shirts and regret." Talia touched the coat and nodded.
"He has plenty of regret already."
"I noticed." APPRAISAL RESULT Hardened Leather Work Coat Rank: Iron (mid) Quality: Hardened Slot: Chest Effects: +2 CON while equipped Notes: Reduces wear from labour, weather, glancing cuts, tool scrape, and light impact. Not a substitute for armour. Halden had moved to the tool wall, selecting wedges, binding strips, oil, a whetstone, and two spare haft collars with the grim satisfaction of a man assembling a small argument against failure.
"Add these." Arra glanced over.
"You paying?"
"He is."
"Then yes." I should have objected. I did not. The pile on the counter looked like survival reduced to objects. Axe. Gloves. Boots. Coat. Oil. Wedges. Stone. Bindings. Things a sensible man bought before leaving town, not after breaking his old life against a tree. I thought of the first time I came here, with too few coins and too much need, buying a used hunter's axe and an iron skinning knife as if they were noble relics. Arra had watched me count every piece then.
Now she watched me try not to count too visibly.
"How much?"
"Eleven copper and forty iron." The number landed hard enough to matter and gently enough to be possible. I nodded before poor instinct could flinch. FUNDS UPDATED You spent 11 copper and 40 iron pieces. Current Coin: 28 copper and 30 iron pieces. Arra packed the smaller tools into Merris's storage pack herself after making me show her how the spaces settled, then gave Merris's stitching a begrudging nod.
"Market pack. Iron (mid), Hardened. Ten spaces. He did not cheat you."
"He gave it to me."
"Then he expects profit later."
"Yes."
"Good. Gifts without hooks make people sentimental." She pushed the new gloves across the counter.
"Put those on before your hands split worse." I obeyed. The gloves hurt at first where they pressed blistered skin, then settled into a firm, protective grip. The new axe felt heavier than the old one, but better balanced. Not Copper. Not enough. Still, when I closed my hand around the haft, the tool did not feel like it was already apologising. Arra took the broken hunter's axe head and turned it over.
"Leave this."
"I can use it for scrap."
"I can use it for scrap. You will carry it north out of guilt and cut yourself on memory." She placed it beneath the counter without asking again.
"It was a good axe. It died promoted." Talia's expression softened by a fraction, then vanished behind a smile.
"Do tools get funerals in Dunmere?" Arra looked at her.
"Only the ones that worked harder than their owners." Halden was at the door now, looking north though the street outside still ran east and west.
"We leave when Dunmere can spare breath to let us. Not before we know what Lysa needs promised, what Wade needs measured, and which road is least likely to eat the cart."
"Cart?" I asked. He turned back.
"You did not think we were walking to Eisenfeld and carrying steel home in our pockets?" I looked at the new pack on my shoulders, the new axe in my hand, the coin reduced but still heavy, and the shop shelves that had given me everything they could and nothing I truly needed. Dunmere had not become smaller. I had become too large for what it could hold. Arra seemed to read enough of that to become brisk again.
"Do not look mournful in my shop. It lowers morale and encourages discounts."
"Thank you," I said. She waved the words away.
"Come back with Copper gear so I can overcharge you for repairs." Outside, the town still smelled of ash, wet stone, and boiled water. The new boots struck the broken street with a firmer sound than my old ones. The coat sat stiff around my shoulders. The axe hung solid in my grip. Better gear. Iron gear. Travel gear. Not an answer, but a way to reach one.

"Eisenfeld is a week north," he said.
"Longer if the road lies." Talia fell into step beside me.
"Roads lie often?" Halden did not look back.
"Only when people trust them." I followed, carrying Iron tools toward a town that needed steel, with Copper waiting somewhere beyond the next road, the next market, and the next version of myself Dunmere could no longer supply.
