Right on schedule, the scenario hit. An hour before dawn, a message scrolled across the sky for everyone in Turin and its metropolitan zone.
The characters burned white against the dark: CITY-WIDE SCENARIO DECLARED: LONGSHADOW ZONE: TORINO METROPOLITAN DURATION: SIX HOURS PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: CONTAIN DIFFUSE SPAWN ACTIVITY AND SUPPRESS FIXED-POINT NODE MANIFESTATIONS FIXED-POINT NODES: SUPERGA BASILICA MIRAFIORI COMPLEX PORTA SUSA STATION DIFFUSE SPAWN: CITY-WIDE, ELEVATED DENSITY SECONDARY OBJECTIVES: UNDISCLOSED REWARDS: SCALED TO CONTRIBUTION AND RESOLUTION METHOD All registered entities in zone are notified. This message will not repeat.
By then, Cecilia was already dressed and in motion, standing at the north entrance to the Palazzo Valperga with Bianca. Matteo was inside, finalizing comms with the squads. Dario and Ruggiero had left the hour before, each taking teams to their pre-assigned sectors. The Analysis team was sequestered in the lower level, coordinating the real-time data feed. Cecilia checked her interface as the final line of the System message faded.
Her personal log was live: LEONELLI FAMILY ORGANIZATION TIER: 1 AUTHORITY: 325/1000 INFAMY: 78 SCENARIO COUNTDOWN: 05: 58 The numbers had climbed steadily over the last three weeks. But what those numbers meant in absolute terms was still uncertain. System interfaces were unhelpfully sparing with comparisons. The sky remained clear overhead, the first hours of the morning cold and still. No monsters. No visible change. But she could already feel the pressure building.
The air had the thickened quality it took on before every scenario, the weight of something gathering strength just beyond perception. She flexed her left hand, feeling the gloves' textured grip, then touched the sidearm holstered at her hip just to confirm it was in place. A squad moved past them in a file. Eight enforcers, armed and equipped with the new items Giulia had fabricated from System drops.
Lightweight vests that carried protection against certain attack types, small devices clipped to belts that Giulia had explained as "node disruptors," designed to interfere with certain monster behaviors in specific circumstances. Cecilia didn't ask for demonstrations. She trusted Giulia's assessment. She nodded to the squad leader and continued to stand, watching as the last of the inner perimeter guards took their positions.
Bianca stood at her side, relaxed but alert, the two of them framed by the entrance in silence.
"Ruggiero called in ten minutes ago," Bianca said quietly.
"All squads in position at Mirafiori." A slight pause.
"He's frustrated he didn't get Superga."
"He'll recover," Cecilia replied, her eyes on the far end of the courtyard.
"We gave it to him because it's the highest visibility prize. Everyone else in the city with a little firepower will be heading there. It's the biggest battle. Let him make a show of force. We'll take the efficiency play." Bianca made a small sound, agreement, or maybe just acknowledgment.
"It's cleaner, but less fun."
"We're not here for fun."
"You're not," Bianca corrected, her voice even.
"I am, sometimes." Cecilia let a slight smile move across her face, quick and hidden. Bianca's dark humor was one of the things she found grounding. Even now.
"Stay close today."
"Always." At the four-minute mark on her countdown, the change came. It began in the distance, beyond the walls of the courtyard, beyond the edge of the Quadrilaterato. A sound like metal groaning under pressure, but layered. It came from everywhere and nowhere at once. The sky didn't change. The buildings didn't shudder. But the city felt as though it had been rotated slightly on its axis, shifted into a place not quite parallel with where it had been a moment before. Bianca's hand moved to the hilt of her knife.
Cecilia watched as, one by one, the System markers for the three fixed-point nodes ignited on her overlay. Red outlines in her vision, glowing faintly at Superga Basilica far to the east, at the Fiat factories in Mirafiori to the southwest, and at Porta Susa close by. Her earpiece crackled.
"All squads, check in," she said. The responses came back one after another, steady and calm. All ten squads operational. All positions held. Cecilia began walking, Bianca at her side, moving toward the eastern wing of the palazzo. Their squad was small and fast: four enforcers, her, and Bianca. They weren't going to any of the fixed points. Instead, they would work the area between the major locations, respond to diffuse spawns as they appeared, and make calculated pushes on opportunities other groups overlooked.
She trusted Ruggiero to dominate the fight at Mirafiori. She trusted Dario to cause enough trouble to distract at least half the attention away from Superga. Her job was to manage the terrain in between, to ensure no threat slipped through, and to claim the secondary objectives the System would bury beneath the obvious ones. As they reached the courtyard's edge, the first monster materialized fifty meters from their position.
A bipedal creature with thin, chitinous limbs and a carapace that looked more like broken concrete than biology. Its spawn marker was orange, mid-tier. Cecilia stopped, gesturing without looking, a subtle signal for her squad to fan out. Bianca moved immediately, her knife drawn, placing herself slightly ahead and to Cecilia's right. The enforcers covered the left. The creature turned toward them, its head tilting as though assessing.
Then it moved, faster than a thing that size should, rushing across the cobbles toward the nearest enforcer. Support the creativity of authors by visiting the original site for this novel and more. The first shot cracked the air, a single precise burst from an automatic rifle. The rounds hit the creature's carapace and fragmented into shrapnel, doing little damage. The monster stumbled but didn't fall. Bianca was already moving to flank. Cecilia watched the pattern, her focus narrowing. She didn't engage. Not yet.
Instead, she activated WEIGHT OF OFFICE, the pressure of her presence expanding outward like a field. She wasn't strong enough yet for it to have a physical effect in combat, but it would passively increase her squad's performance while active.
"Attack!" The squad moved to her command without hesitation. The second volley hit the creature with fire-tipped rounds that cracked the carapace in a spray of sparks. The monster hissed, jerking back, confused by the changing damage type. Bianca took advantage, closing in from the side, her knife flashing in the low light. Cecilia's overlay registered the creature's health dipping into the critical range. The System didn't provide numerical values, but she knew the cues.
The moment it stumbled, she signaled the final strike. The squad finished it in seconds, the creature collapsing and dissipating into dark vapor before it hit the ground. The System registered the kill, a brief confirmation in Cecilia's interface.
"Move," she said, already walking, the squad reforming around her. Two blocks from the Quadrilaterato's edge, another orange marker appeared. Larger than the first. This time, she gave the engagement signal before they were in line of sight, pulling her sidearm as they approached. Bianca moved ahead, scouting the building fronts and alley mouths.
"Contact right," Bianca's voice came through the earpiece.
"Same species. Pack of three." Cecilia adjusted her course slightly, using a narrow passage to come at the monsters from an angle. Her enforcers set up at the opposite end. The creatures reacted to the flanking positions, their attention divided. The first burst of rifle fire struck one monster in the leg, slowing it. The other two bolted in opposite directions. Cecilia aimed calmly, putting two shots into the damaged creature's thorax. It dropped. The third turned back toward her. Bianca hit it from behind.
The remaining creature focused on her, and she moved, letting it close to ten meters, where her authority would carry the most weight. It rushed, its movements erratic. She put a bullet through its primary eye. The monster staggered, and she sidestepped, the follow-up shots going into its joint gaps where the carapace thinned. It collapsed with a screech that echoed off the stone walls. Her interface registered three kills.
"Status," she said into her mic, the last of the monsters evaporating into ash.
"Clear sector," one enforcer replied.
"All squads report engagements," came the response over the general channel. Ruggiero's voice.
"City's heating up." Cecilia didn't respond. She signaled her team and kept moving, cutting through a small piazza and into a side street that ran parallel to Via Garibaldi. Securing the Quadrilatero was a priority, but the real work was in the spaces between. The city was waking around them, the scenario's presence fully realized now. She could hear sporadic gunfire in multiple directions, and once, something large moving on a rooftop blocks away, too fast to identify.
The military and police would be engaged by now, trying to manage panic and containment with inadequate firepower and no System insights. She didn't need to hear reports to know their effectiveness was limited. Her earpiece clicked with an update.
"I think Parco Dora's lighting up soon," came Luca's voice, slightly breathless, the sound of typing behind him.
"Two other groups pushing that direction, but one's smaller. I think it's our best shot at a contested mid-level prize if we move fast." Cecilia made a slight adjustment in direction, the team responding to her movement without question.
"Once my group's done in Quadrilatero, we'll move north."
"Got it," Luca replied.
"There's something weird with the spawns... I'll call if I can narrow it down." She acknowledged, cutting the channel. The squads would hold their current routes unless she gave new orders. She had placed her bets on territory before the night was over. Now it was a matter of playing them out efficiently. Another block. Another orange marker, but this one was deeper in color, nearly red. She signaled for caution, spreading her team wider as they approached the intersection.
The monster that emerged from the alley ahead didn't resemble the previous spawns. It was taller, with segmented limbs and what looked like a vestigial second set of arms tucked against its torso. Its head was flat and eyeless, like a plate of dark glass. Bianca raised a hand. Cecilia nodded. The creature paused, sensing the squad's presence. It raised its forelimbs, and something changed in the air around it. A ripple of distortion, like heat haze, spreading outward.
"Cover," Bianca said, dropping to one knee, her body shielding Cecilia instinctively. Cecilia crouched behind her, the rest of the squad moving behind cover positions. The ripple passed over them. She felt it as pressure against her skin, but no visible effect. When she looked up, the creature was gone.
"Where did it go?" one of the enforcers whispered, sweeping his rifle left and right. Bianca was already moving, circling where the creature had been. Cecilia followed, keeping her weapon raised. There was a scuff from above. She looked up in time to see the creature on a second-story balcony, leaping down toward them.
"Down!" Bianca snapped. The squad reacted, scattering. Cecilia moved laterally, her back to the building front, bringing her pistol up. The creature landed in a crouch, then rushed her directly, its speed almost blurring. Bianca was already closing the distance, her knife angled for a strike. Then the creature twisted, lashing out with a blow that forced Bianca to dodge, and followed with a sweep of its secondary limbs, one of which had elongated into a blade of what looked like crystalline bone.
Bianca parried, the clash of metal on crystal ringing sharply, but the impact threw her back a step. Cecilia fired. The shot hit the monster's flank, cracking the chitin but failing to penetrate. The creature's head swung toward her, and it lunged. She stepped into the charge, ducking under the reaching limbs and firing upward into the joint where its arm met its torso. The creature jerked, its balance faltering.
Bianca recovered in the instant, slicing upward with her knife, the blade sinking deep into the gap Cecilia had created. The monster shrieked, a grating sound like steel on stone, and staggered back. Cecilia moved with it, firing twice more, both shots hitting the damaged section. Bianca yanked her knife free and stabbed again, higher, aiming for the head. The creature collapsed mid-motion, its body dissolving as it hit the ground. The team held position for a moment, watching the ash settle.
Bianca turned to Cecilia, a thin line of blood on her arm from a glancing hit, though she didn't seem to notice. Cecilia holstered her pistol.
"Report." The enforcers checked their positions.
"All clear," one said. Bianca nodded once. She wiped her knife clean on a cloth and sheathed it. The cut on her arm had stopped bleeding.
"That's one that didn't fit the profile," Bianca said, her voice even.
"They're adapting," Cecilia replied. She opened a channel to the command frequency.
"Update. Hostile type not previously catalogued engaged at the Quadrilatero edge. High agility. Possible phase ability. Watch for similar encounters." Ruggiero responded after a moment, the sound of gunfire behind his voice.
"Noted. We've got some weird ones over here, too." Cecilia clicked the channel over to Luca.
"Add a new species to your tracking. If there's a pattern emerging, I need to see it."
"On it." She took one more look at the alley where the creature had emerged, then gestured to her team.
"Let's move." They continued the sweep, finishing the Quadrilatero perimeter with two more minor engagements. When the last orange marker in the zone turned gray, she signaled the squad to regroup back to Palazzo Valperga. As they approached the garage exit, she pulled up her organization overlay. The family's collective kill count was rising steadily, her own personal contribution among them. The scenario timer ticked down to five hours. Inside the garage, Luca was waiting by one of the armored vans.
Cecilia approached him as her squad loaded into the vehicle.
"Why are you up here?" she asked, keeping her voice low enough for him alone.
"I thought I'd be more useful close. And it's better for my team if I'm on-site." He didn't look entirely comfortable with the decision, but he said it firmly enough that she understood it had been a deliberate choice.
"Fine," she said.
"We're heading to Parco Dora. You stay in the van this time, monitor comms, and call out anything I can't see in real time." He nodded quickly.
"Got it." She gestured to the driver's door.
"Then let's go." The engine rumbled as they pulled out of the garage, the early morning light still pale, the sky over Turin filled with the quiet movement of hunters and hunted.
