I wake before dawn, although I remain where I am for several moments after opening my eyes, listening to the familiar quiet of the Grove while the darkness still lies heavily over the garden and only the faintest hint of approaching morning touches the sky beyond the branches above me.
The Silverwood and Heartwoods stand motionless in the cool air, their presence settling against my senses with the same quiet familiarity it always does whenever I reach for the connection we share, yet beneath that calm I can still feel the anticipation that followed me to sleep the previous night, because today we are going to attempt something none of us has ever tried before.
Gale is already awake when I finally rise, and I find him standing near the edge of the path with his attention fixed on the deeper shadows of the garden as though he has spent part of the night watching whatever may or may not have been moving near the Silverwood.
The sight immediately brings back Eammon and Aine's excited insistence that there is a ghost somewhere within the Grove, along with the considerably less amusing fact that Aibell, Ciara and Merrow had all heard something as well, but when I reach outward toward the trees, I find nothing that suggests danger or any presence the Grove itself considers hostile.
"You haven't forgotten about our ghost, have you?" I ask quietly as I move past him. Gale turns his head toward me before looking back toward the trees, offering nothing beyond that, and I shake my head as I continue toward the clearing. Whatever had been making the sound can wait until we are finished with the ritual, especially since I have no intention of dividing my attention between something I do not yet understand and the amount of mana we are about to introduce into the Grove.
The others begin arriving soon afterward, with Lorcan appearing first from one of the paths that leads toward the outer edge of the garden and Elyrion following him several minutes later, his wooden sword clicking softly against the ground as he walks.
I notice the sound immediately and find myself glancing toward it before I can stop myself, because Aine had described hearing something very similar the night before, but when I look at Elyrion, he notices nothing unusual about my reaction and continues toward us as though there is nothing more remarkable about his sword than there had been during the previous months.
Garrick is the last to arrive, though his appearance makes it clear that the delay has nothing to do with reluctance to take part in the ritual and considerably more to do with his dislike of waking before sunrise.
"You could have chosen a more civilized hour," he says as he approaches us, though the complaint loses some of its force when he has to suppress a yawn.
"You complained when I told you to go to sleep early as well," I remind him.
"That doesn't mean I wanted to wake early." Lorcan, who is already standing beside me near the Silverwood, glances toward him with faint amusement.
"It is remarkable how those two things tend to be connected." Garrick gives him a look that suggests he is considering several responses and has rejected all of them as being more effort than the conversation deserves, but whatever amusement the exchange might have produced disappears naturally as our attention returns to the trees around us.
We had discussed the ritual for long enough the previous evening that there is little left to decide, and standing here now, with the first pale traces of dawn beginning to touch the uppermost branches, I find myself appreciating the difference between discussing something and actually preparing to place my hands upon the Silverwood and attempt it.
"We should begin," I say, and the others nod before moving into the positions we agreed upon the night before. Lorcan joins me beside the Silverwood while Garrick and Elyrion move farther apart, each stopping near one of the Heartwoods surrounding the central tree.
We had chosen those positions deliberately, because placing all four of us beside the Silverwood would have concentrated the ritual around a single point, whereas allowing Garrick and Elyrion to stand among the Heartwoods should give their connection to the Grove a chance to stabilize the flow as it moves outward through the roots beneath the garden.
When I place my palm against the Silverwood's trunk, the familiar connection answers almost immediately, and I close my eyes as my awareness settles into the living presence beneath the bark.
Communicating with the Grove has never been anything as simple as speaking and receiving words in return, because what reaches me through the connection comes in impressions and sensations that have gradually become easier to understand over the months I have spent tending these trees, sleeping beneath their branches and watching their roots spread through the abandoned garden.
I feel the slow movement of life within the Silverwood, the countless roots pressed into the earth below and the Heartwoods connected to it throughout the garden, while the smaller plants, insects and animals that have gradually made this place their home remain like distant currents at the edge of my awareness.
As I allow myself to sink deeper into that connection, I become aware of something that feels different from the Grove's usual quiet, a subtle stirring that I cannot immediately identify as my own anticipation because it seems to move through the trees rather than within me. We're going to try something, I think, knowing as always that the thought is more for my own understanding than because the Grove needs words. If you don't want it, let us know.
For several moments, the connection remains unchanged, and I begin wondering whether I had imagined that earlier sensation entirely, but then something shifts beneath the earth, not with enough force to disturb the soil above it but with a slow movement that passes through the roots and reaches outward from the Silverwood toward every Heartwood surrounding it.
The response carries no words and offers no promise that the ritual will succeed, yet I understand it well enough to know that the Grove has not rejected what we intend to do. When I open my eyes, Lorcan is watching me, "Well?"
"I think it's willing to try."
"The Grove sounds less certain than I hoped."
"It's a living Grove, not a contract." The faint amusement that appears in his expression lasts only briefly before he turns his attention toward the others, and I follow his gaze to find Garrick standing beside his Heartwood with one hand resting against the bark while Elyrion has already closed his eyes and allowed his attention to settle into his own connection with the trees.
"Can you both feel it?" I ask. Garrick gives a slow nod.
"It's different." Elyrion's fingers tighten slightly around the trunk beside him as he listens to whatever passes through his connection.
"It knows that something is about to change." That is enough for me. I close my eyes again and begin reaching inward for my mana, feeling it answer through the familiar channels within my body before guiding it toward the connection between myself and the Silverwood.
Lorcan does the same beside me, and the difference between our mana becomes apparent the moment we allow the first currents to touch the tree, because mine moves through the connection with an ease that has been shaped by months of living beside the Grove, while his follows alongside it with a presence the Silverwood has learned to recognize even though his bond with it is still younger and different from my own.
Rather than immediately pushing our mana into the tree, we allow it to gather at the edge of the connection, giving the Silverwood time to sense what we are offering, and when I finally guide the first careful current forward, the response beneath my palm is immediate enough that I feel the pulse before I fully understand what has happened.
The mana enters the Silverwood and travels downward through the living trunk, where the roots beneath the soil receive it and carry it outward toward the Heartwoods surrounding us. Garrick draws in a breath.
"I can feel it coming through."
"Don't resist it," Elyrion tells him, and although his voice remains calm, I can hear the concentration beneath it as he keeps his attention fixed upon the Heartwood beside him.
"Let the connection settle around the flow." I guide another current forward, and Lorcan matches it beside me, neither of us attempting to increase the amount too quickly as the mana continues moving downward through the Silverwood. The roots carry it into the surrounding network, and I become increasingly aware of Garrick and Elyrion through the ritual, not as clearly as I sense the trees themselves but clearly enough to understand that their presence is beginning to do exactly what we had hoped.
The mana does not gather within one trunk or spread blindly through the earth. As it reaches the Heartwoods, the connections Garrick and Elyrion share with the Grove seem to give the flow a steadiness that I cannot achieve alone, allowing it to continue outward while remaining connected to the larger whole.
Lorcan and I provide the energy, while the two Groveknights become part of the current carrying it through the living network beneath the garden, and at the center of all of it, the Grove itself decides where that energy should go. The first visible response comes from the Heartwood beside Garrick, where a single leaf begins to tremble despite the complete absence of wind, and within seconds the movement spreads through the branches above him before travelling to the neighboring trees.
Leaves rustle softly throughout the garden as though a breeze has suddenly entered the Grove without touching anything beyond its walls, and when I open my eyes, I can see the branches of the Silverwood moving as well. Lorcan looks toward me.
"It's taking more."
"I know." The temptation to give it everything at once rises almost immediately, because I can feel how much more mana both of us are capable of offering now that the connection has opened and the Grove has accepted the first currents, but I remember Elyrion's warning from the previous night and force myself to remain patient.
This ritual will only succeed if we continue to guide the energy rather than allowing excitement to turn the flow into something neither Lorcan nor I can control, so instead of pushing harder, I slow my breathing and let another measured current enter the Silverwood. Lorcan notices the change and adjusts beside me without needing to be told, while Garrick and Elyrion continue holding their positions among the Heartwoods.
Together, we maintain the rhythm until the mana moving through the Grove begins to feel less like something we are introducing and more like part of the trees themselves, and as that happens, the connection expands beyond anything I have experienced before. I feel the roots. Not merely the few that surround the Silverwood or the thicker ones I have occasionally sensed beneath the garden, but an immense network of living growth pressing deeper into the earth and spreading farther sideways beneath the old walls.
The sensation reaches me gradually, expanding as the mana strengthens the paths through which the trees are already connected, and somewhere far below our feet, I become aware of the soil shifting around roots that are beginning to move. My eyes open just as the ground near the base of the Silverwood trembles.
At first, it is little more than a subtle disturbance, with a thin line forming through the earth before disappearing beneath the grass, but similar movements soon begin appearing farther away as the roots below respond to the mana flowing through them. Garrick looks down with obvious concern while Lorcan's attention sharpens beside me, and even Elyrion opens his eyes as the Heartwoods begin to sway more noticeably.
"Kaelen," Garrick says, "is this part of the plan?"
"I didn't have a plan beyond getting this far."
"That isn't reassuring."
"I know." Lorcan lets out a breath that might have been a laugh if the mana moving through the Silverwood had not suddenly changed. The pulse beneath my palm grows stronger, and this time the response does not remain confined to the tree before me, because the entire network beneath the garden answers with it as thousands of roots seem to stir simultaneously beneath the soil.
The sensation rushes through the connection so quickly that I have barely enough time to steady myself before the earth begins trembling beneath our feet, while all around us, the first light of dawn finally spills over the walls of the abandoned garden and touches a Grove that has begun to awaken in a way none of us had expected.
The trembling beneath our feet grows stronger as the mana continues moving through the Grove, although it never becomes violent enough to throw any of us from our feet, and I quickly realize that what I am feeling is not the earth resisting the ritual but the vast network beneath the garden responding to it.
The roots of the Silverwood and Heartwoods are moving with a purpose I can sense through our connection, pressing downward into the deeper layers of soil while others spread steadily outward beneath the abandoned garden, and as the trees begin drawing upon the mana Lorcan and I are feeding into them, the ritual slowly becomes something more than either of us had originally intended. If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.
"Keep the flow steady," I tell the others, because even though the Grove does not feel threatened, the sheer scale of the response is enough to make me wary of allowing excitement to overcome caution. Lorcan gives a short nod beside me and turns his attention fully toward the Silverwood, while Garrick and Elyrion remain among the Heartwoods with their connections open to the ritual.
I can sense all three of them now, their presences becoming clearer within the flow of mana without ever intruding upon the deeper awareness I share with the Grove, and as the energy continues moving between us, their roles begin to settle into something more natural than the arrangement we had discussed the night before.
The first changes become visible within the Heartwoods surrounding us, whose trunks gradually begin thickening as the mana moves through them, while the branches above our heads stretch farther outward and fresh growth appears along limbs that had seemed fully developed only moments earlier.
Leaves deepen into richer shades of green as new ones unfold beside them, and the slow rustling that had previously moved through the Grove grows louder as the expanding branches brush against one another and spread into spaces that had remained open since the trees first began growing. Garrick glances upward when the Heartwood beside him begins reaching higher.
"I think this might be working." The branch extending above him chooses that moment to grow far enough that he has to take a step backward to avoid standing directly beneath it, and Lorcan gives him an amused glance without removing his hand from the Silverwood.
"I suppose the tree agrees with you." Garrick looks upward again.
"I don't know if that makes me feel better." Despite the tension running through me, I find myself smiling, although the feeling fades as my attention returns to the Silverwood because its response has begun changing as well. The pale trunk beneath my palm slowly widens, and I eventually have to shift my position as the tree continues growing upward before my eyes, while new branches begin emerging higher along its length and stretching outward through the morning air.
Yet the transformation above the ground is only part of what I am feeling. As the Silverwood grows, its roots drive deeper into the earth and spread farther sideways, carrying my awareness with them through the connection we share until the boundaries of the abandoned garden slowly begin disappearing from my senses.
I have felt the Grove's roots beneath the garden before, but never with this kind of clarity, and as the mana strengthens the living network beneath us, I begin sensing the roots slipping beyond the walls of the property and into the soil beneath Fallowspire itself. For a moment, instinct makes me tense. The roots are moving beneath the city.
I immediately reach deeper into the connection, searching for the danger I expect to find as the roots approach foundations, buried stone and the countless structures that have been built above them over generations, but the Grove moves with a care that surprises me.
Rather than breaking through anything in its path, the roots work their way through the spaces beneath the city, slipping around stone and old foundations as naturally as water finding a course through the earth, and as I feel them continue outward, I understand that the Silverwood is not trying to claim Fallowspire. It is simply growing within it, "Kaelen?" Garrick's voice pulls my attention partially back toward the garden, and when I look toward him, I realize that the expression on my face must have changed.
"The roots are spreading beyond the garden," I explain.
"They're moving beneath the city." Lorcan's concentration sharpens beside me, though he continues guiding his mana into the Silverwood.
"Can you control them?"
"I don't think I'm controlling them at all." That answer does little to reassure anyone, including myself, but before Garrick can respond, another sensation reaches me through the roots, faint at first and so distant that I almost mistake it for another part of the growing network beneath us. As the roots continue moving through the earth, however, the sensation grows stronger and begins pulling at my attention with an unmistakable sense of recognition. There is something beneath the city.
I follow the sensation instinctively, allowing my awareness to travel with the roots as they continue outward beneath Fallowspire, and although I cannot see the streets above me, the shape of the city gradually becomes clear enough through my memory that I begin recognizing the direction in which the roots are moving.
They are travelling toward an older section of the city not far from the Adventurer's Guild, where a neglected piece of land has remained hidden between older buildings and walls that have long outlived whatever purpose they were originally built to serve. The roots continue moving until they finally reach the source of the strange presence. The recognition that passes through the Grove is immediate. I know what I am sensing before I fully understand why.
"Kaelen?" Lorcan asks again, and this time there is enough concern in his voice that I force myself to answer.
"There are Heartwood seeds." For several seconds, none of them says anything, and I can feel their surprise even without looking toward them because they know what the discovery means.
The Heartwoods surrounding us did not simply appear when the Grove first began growing; their seeds had been hidden beneath this very garden, preserved within a buried repository that I had discovered only after planting the Silverwood, and now the roots beneath Fallowspire have found something that carries the same unmistakable presence.
"Where?" Elyrion asks.
"Near the Adventurer's Guild, I think, beneath an abandoned plot of land." As soon as the words leave me, I realize that the roots have already begun responding to what they have found. The mana flowing through the Silverwood reaches the distant repository through the growing network beneath the city, and whatever has kept the seeds dormant until now begins to weaken beneath the sudden arrival of life.
"Should we stop the ritual?" Lorcan asks, his voice remaining calm despite the question. I hesitate, because every sensible part of me knows that we have already gone beyond the limits of what we originally intended to do, yet when I reach toward the Grove, searching for any sign that the ritual has become unstable or harmful, I find only a powerful sense of growth.
The Silverwood does not feel strained, the Heartwoods surrounding us are not rejecting the mana and the distant seeds are not being forced awake against their nature. The Grove is simply responding.
"Not yet," I tell him.
"We're still stable, and the trees aren't resisting." Lorcan glances toward me.
"That doesn't mean you know what will happen next."
"No," I admit, "It doesn't." Garrick lets out a breath that sounds suspiciously like a laugh.
"I appreciate the honesty." The moment passes quickly, however, because the dormant Heartwood seeds beneath the distant plot begin absorbing the mana reaching them through the roots, and I feel the first faint stirrings of life within them. One awakens, followed by another, and then more, until the entire hidden repository seems to come alive at once, sending a surge of recognition through the Grove that almost overwhelms me. Somewhere else within Fallowspire, new Heartwoods are beginning to grow.
The change reaches the surface quickly enough that I can sense the distant soil opening as the first young trees begin pushing upward, although they remain far smaller than the Heartwoods surrounding us and will need time before they can become anything like the ancient-looking trees that have grown around the Silverwood.
Even so, their presence immediately becomes part of the larger connection, a young cluster of magical trees beginning its own life near the Adventurer's Guild while remaining linked to the Grove that awakened them. Before I can fully understand the implications of what has happened, another change begins around us. Thin green shoots begin appearing throughout the abandoned garden.
At first, I notice only a few pushing through the grass near the edges of the clearing, but more soon follow, emerging from the soil in places that had appeared completely bare only moments earlier. Lorcan notices them at the same time I do, and his eyes move across the garden as dozens of small shoots continue breaking through the earth.
"Those aren't grove trees."
"No," I say, "They're ordinary seeds." The garden must have contained countless seeds beneath its soil long before the Silverwood was ever planted here, remnants of trees and plants that had grown and died during the years the property remained abandoned, and now the mana moving through the Grove has reached them as well. Unlike the Heartwoods, they carry no ancient presence and possess no magical nature of their own, yet the sudden vitality surrounding them has given those dormant seeds the chance to grow.
The first shoots become saplings before our eyes. Thin trunks rise from the earth as branches begin spreading outward, and although their growth is slower than that of the Silverwood and Heartwoods, the change remains astonishing to watch as more and more trees appear throughout the garden. Some grow close to the old walls, while others rise between the larger magical trees, filling the open spaces that had previously separated one section of the Grove from another.
As the mana continues moving through the roots beneath us, the saplings grow stronger; their trunks thicken; their branches spread; their leaves unfold beneath the steadily brightening morning sky. The growth does not transform them into magical trees, and when I reach toward them through my connection with the Grove, I can immediately feel the difference between their simple presence and the deeper awareness of the Silverwood and Heartwoods.
Yet the mana surrounding them has left its mark, and even though they remain ordinary trees, there is a quiet vitality within them that makes their leaves seem brighter and their growing branches stronger than they should have been. Garrick slowly turns as another young tree rises nearby.
"We're running out of empty space."
"That's probably the point," Elyrion says, although the wonder in his voice makes it clear that he is as fascinated by what he is seeing as the rest of us. I follow his gaze upward and understand what he means. The new trees are not growing separately from the Grove. They are filling it. Their branches gradually reach toward those of the Heartwoods and the Silverwood, while the larger trees continue extending their own crowns outward until leaves begin overlapping above us.
A branch from one of the new trees, brushes against the lower limbs of a Heartwood, while another stretches toward the growing canopy surrounding the Silverwood, and slowly the spaces of open sky that once separated the different sections of the garden begin disappearing. The Grove is becoming a forest.
Not a forest of magical trees alone, but a living place in which the Silverwood and Heartwoods stand at the center while ordinary trees grow around them under the influence of their mana, connecting one part of the garden to another until the entire abandoned property begins changing into something completely different from what it had been before. As the branches continue spreading, I finally begin reducing the mana I am feeding into the Silverwood.
"Lorcan," I say quietly, and he immediately understands what I mean because his breathing has grown heavier and I can feel the strain beginning to settle into his body.
"We should slow it." He gives me a relieved nod.
"I was hoping you would say that." Together, we begin easing the flow rather than cutting it off, withdrawing our mana slowly enough that the Grove can settle into the strength it has already received without experiencing a sudden loss of energy. Garrick and Elyrion remain connected to the ritual as we do so, maintaining the stability of the flow while the trees continue absorbing what remains within the network of roots. The growth does not stop immediately.
The Silverwood continues rising until its pale trunk stands far broader and taller than it had been when we began, while the Heartwoods surrounding it have grown into trees whose thick branches now spread high above us with a presence that makes them appear far older than they truly are. The ordinary trees filling the garden eventually slow as well.
The old abandoned garden becomes covered beneath a continuous canopy that stretches from one wall to another, and when the last section of open sky finally disappears behind the interwoven growth, I realize that the Grove has transformed the entire property. It is no longer simply a cluster of magical trees growing within an abandoned garden. The garden itself has become part of the Grove.
The mana finally begins settling, and the constant movement beneath the earth gradually fades until the soil beneath our feet becomes still once more. The leaves continue rustling softly overhead, but the violent sense of growth that had filled every part of my awareness slowly gives way to the familiar presence of the Grove, only deeper and stronger now than anything I have felt before.
When I finally remove my hand from the Silverwood, the sudden absence of the ritual's intensity leaves me slightly unsteady, and I place my hand against the trunk for support before my knees can betray me completely. Lorcan notices immediately.
"You're exhausted."
"I'm standing."
"You're leaning against a tree."
"I'm appreciating the tree." Garrick gives me a look that makes it abundantly clear that he considers this explanation ridiculous, while Lorcan closes his eyes briefly as though regretting that he ever asked, but the quiet amusement surrounding us does not last long because Elyrion begins walking slowly through the transformed garden.
His gaze moves from the Silverwood to the surrounding Heartwoods and then toward the countless ordinary trees that now fill every section of the property, and when he finally speaks, there is a quiet awe in his voice that I have rarely heard from him.
"I have watched Groves grow before," he says, "but never like this." I follow his gaze and find that I have no answer. When I reach toward the Grove, I can feel the difference immediately. The Silverwood is stronger. The Heartwoods are stronger.
Their roots extend far beyond the walls of this garden, reaching deeper beneath Fallowspire and connecting us to the newly awakened cluster of young Heartwoods near the Adventurer's Guild, where another forgotten piece of land has suddenly begun the same journey, this garden began when I first planted the Silverwood. I cannot yet understand what that means for the future. Perhaps I will not understand for years.
For now, however, I am simply standing within the Grove and trying to take in what we have accomplished, while the first true morning light filters through the dense canopy above and falls across a garden that has become something far larger than the place, I once discovered in ruin. Then I remember, I promised the children that I would speak to them after the ritual about their ghost.
I glance toward the deeper sections of the Grove, wondering where Eammon and Aine had been standing when they heard the strange sound and whether they will still be convinced that something supernatural has been wandering through the trees once they see how much the garden has changed. I am about to turn toward the others and suggest that we find them when a quiet sound reaches me through the silence beneath the canopy, faint enough that I almost convince myself I imagined it.
It comes again before I can dismiss it, carrying through the trees with a slow, measured rhythm as wood strikes against the ground somewhere beyond the Silverwood. The sound is unmistakable now, and the memory of Aine demonstrating it with her small hand returns immediately to my mind as I stand completely still and listen. Click. Then another step follows somewhere deeper among the trees. Clack.
I turn toward the sound, while Lorcan notices the change in my expression and begins asking what is wrong, but before I can answer, another sound reaches me through the quiet of the Grove. Someone is laughing. The laughter is soft and distant, yet something about it sends a strange feeling through me as though I have heard it before, although that is impossible because the voice belongs to a memory I have carried with me for far too long.
I remain where I am, staring into the trees while the others wait for me to explain. Then the wooden staff strikes the ground again somewhere within the Grove, followed by that same quiet laughter, and for the first time since the children told me about their ghost, I begin to wonder whether Eammon and Aine had been right all along. There is someone here.
