Mark climbed out of bed, even though he would have preferred to stay there. He was still tired; yesterday had taken a lot out of him. When he climbed out of the lean-to, Ava was there bouncing up and down, eager to tell him something.
"I leveled up yesterday. I tried to tell you last night, but you came into camp and just fell asleep."
"That's great, Ava. What did you get?"
"I got a super cool skill. Any guesses what it was?" Mark just stood there, saying nothing, trying to remember why he had gotten up at all. Ava was too excited, though, to let it stop there.
"I got the skill 'Animal Sense'; it allows me to feel when animals are near. I can also tell how they are feeling." She went over and grabbed the stalker from its cage and looked it in the eyes.
"See, I can tell it's bored."
"Great, Ava, that will be helpful." Mark wondered if she could tell he was tired.
"Pretty good skill to help you take care of your stalker."
"I can also sense there's a bird in that tree over there. It's hungry, and I think it's waiting for us to drop something from breakfast so it can grab it."
"But I'm pretty sure if it tries to get something, my stalker will try to eat it."
"Speaking of the stalker, you should give it a name."
"Great idea!" She then went back and sat in her chair, talking to the stalker, going over names, trying to figure out which one it liked. Mark made some breakfast and then sat at his crafting table to think. Yesterday had been a busy day. He had scouted more of the eastern area, especially where he found the boar, and identified a strong path for a new trap line running from just east of camp up toward the north. He built a much bigger, better-designed trap able to catch much larger animals.
Best of all, he caught the boar and leveled up. Things were looking up. But it was now time to assign his stats and pick his skill. Bringing up his current stats, he looked at them and thought about what his needs were. Yesterday, when killing the boar, he struggled to kill it even though it was wounded and trapped. He was also extremely tired after the full ordeal. With that in mind, he added two points to strength and one to vitality.
The last two he placed into perception, which remained his focus for finding, trapping, and understanding his place in this world. With that done, he brought up his current stats to review them. Strength: 8 Agility: 7 Vitality: 14 Intelligence: 14 Perception: 21 Mark then brought up the skills selection screen.
[Skill Selection Available] Choose 1: Option 1: Advanced Trap Mechanics Effect: Improves trigger reliability and activation speed Allows multi-stage trap setups Reduces failure rate against larger targets Option 2: Territorial Awareness This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
Effect: Improved understanding of creature movement patterns within an area Highlights zones of activity and disruption Increases effectiveness when operating in familiar territory Option 3: Adaptive Combat — Basic Effect: Improves effectiveness when switching between tools or tactics Slight bonus when engaging targets resistant to prepared methods Encourages flexible, real-time decision-making He read through each option more than once, weighing how they would help him and Ava stay alive.
All of them would help him meet his goals and keep both of them safer. This decision was harder than his last skill choice. He needed all of them but could only have one of them. He first eliminated the combat one. He was weak at combat, but it was not his strength, and he needed the other two choices more. He finally settled on Territorial Awareness, as his running into that huge creature and fleeing from it caused him to almost die from the boar he ran straight into.
He needed to be more aware of what was out there and how the system divided the land into different areas. When he finally selected the skill, the UI updated.
Skill: Territorial Awareness — Basic Effect: Detects patterns of creature movement within a defined area Highlights zones of frequent activity, danger, and stability Improves efficiency of actions performed within familiar territory Additional Effects: Trap success rate increases in known zones Reduced chance of unexpected encounters Subtle awareness of environmental changes Limitations: Requires time spent in area to develop accuracy Does not reveal exact locations Less effective in unfamiliar regions Notes: Territory must be observed, maintained, and reinforced.
After he read through the updated description, he knew he had made the right choice. Mark then next focused on the [New Trait Available] message on his UI; nothing changed.
"... That's helpful," he muttered. He closed his UI and then stood up. He then heard a chime, and another message appeared. [Territorial Threshold Reached] You have demonstrated sustained survival within a defined area. Current status: Unstable Recommendation: Establish a controlled base of operations. Benefits: Increased efficiency within territory Improved resource stability Enhanced system interaction Warning: Unstructured survival will result in diminishing returns. Progression requires development.
"Okay, I think that was a hint if I have ever seen one." Ava turned around and asked, "What was a hint?"
"Oh sorry, I also leveled up yesterday and just got done assigning my stats and picking my skill."
"Oh, cool, congrats! What's your skill?"
"It's called territorial awareness, and I just got a system message saying I have met a threshold, and to increase it, I needed to establish a base of operations." Ava asked, "Are we moving then?"
"No, but I do think that I need to rebuild this camp. When I put up my lean-to originally, it was just short-term survival. It's time to build a more permanent camp." Cora then said, "You're building a permanent camp?" Mark spun around to find Cora standing behind him, casually eating berries.
"Yes, I got a skill..." Before he could finish his sentence, Cora said, "Yeah, I heard."
"You're really going to build something permanent?"
"Yes, I am, and if either of you wants to help, you can." Cora just turned around and walked away. Mark watched her go as she disappeared back into the forest. Behind him, Ava spoke.
"Oh, can I help? That sounds fun."
"For now I just need to plan. The best way you can help is to keep checking the traps…" With that said, Ava got the stalker out of the cage, and it followed her out of camp as Ava headed off to collect the traps for the day.
"That's so strange that it just follows her." Mark spent the next few hours walking around the camp, studying the layout and thinking through how he could reshape it into something more permanent. Ava walked back into camp and said, "I named it." Mark looked at her.
"You named it?" Ava nodded, a little more firmly this time.
"Bramble." She said it like that settled the matter. Mark looked at the stalker and then back at her.
"... Bramble."
"It fits," she said.
"It liked it."
