Chương 145: After the Written Ending

Zayn woke up in front of an open door. That was the first thing he saw. Not Lena asleep in a chair, her hands still wrapped in threads of healing light that were nearly extinguished. Not Narek leaning against the wall, a blanket over his shoulders and his black claws resting on his knees. Not Elias, standing by the window, with no sword at his waist. The door. Open. No chains. No seals. No guard at the threshold. Zayn stayed still.
His body felt as though it had been emptied, dismantled, then rebuilt by someone who only knew his anatomy through rumors. His wings had disappeared into his back, retracted because he no longer had enough energy to keep them out. His marks burned faintly beneath his skin. Voragna's regeneration was still working. Slowly. Without elegance. But his heart was beating. He turned his head slightly. The room felt familiar even though he had never entered it before. Books covered the walls.
Several shelves had been overturned. Maps of the human world, the demon continent, and the old borders had been pinned around a circular table. A pair of broken glasses rested on the desk. Maelor's private observatory. Zayn looked at the door again.
"How long?" His voice woke Lena. She straightened abruptly, nearly fell from her chair, then stared at him as if she could not decide whether to call someone or check whether she was hallucinating.
"Nine days." Zayn closed his eyes.
"That's too much."
"Your heart stopped three times."
"Only?" Lena did not smile. She had changed too. Her hair had been tied back carelessly. Dark circles ringed her eyes. Her hands bore fine golden burns, marks left by the days spent keeping alive a body saturated with demonic magic.
"You should have died," she said. Zayn opened his eyes again.
"I hear that a lot."
"This time, it wasn't a threat." He tried to sit up. Pain cut through him immediately. His arms almost gave out. A clawed hand slipped beneath his shoulder. Narek helped him sit. Zayn turned a surprised look toward him. The young beastman immediately pulled his hand away.
"Don't get any ideas." He had returned to almost normal size, but the seed had left traces too obvious to hide. A broken horn still emerged from his hair. Black plates covered his neck and part of his cheek. His fingers remained too long, ending in claws he could no longer fully retract. His left eye was gray. The right still held a red crack around the pupil. Zayn studied him.
"You're ugly." Narek bared his teeth.
"So are you." A silence passed. Not comfortable. But real. Zayn looked down at his chest. The mark of Lust had closed into a dark line. The other six Downfalls slept, as if exhausted by their own existence.
"The cycle?" Elias answered from the window.
"Still interrupted." Zayn turned his head toward him. The former hero was wearing simple clothes. His right arm was held in a brace. He no longer had his armor, his cape, or that blade the world had given him the moment he arrived. He looked less like a hero. And more like someone who had finally been forced to choose what he was without a weapon answering in his place.
"Still?" Zayn repeated.
"Ivara checks every hour. The Throne no longer beats the way it used to. The old summonings have gone quiet. Some prophecies have lost their final lines." Elias looked out at the sky through the window.
"No one knows whether it's permanent."
"Good."
"You find that reassuring?"
"No." Zayn leaned his head back against the wall.
"I find it new." The system appeared before him. The window was simpler than before. Less certain. [Name: Zayn Veylor.] [Race: Human.] The line trembled. [Alterations: multiple.] Then: [Title: Demon King.] A new line appeared beneath it. [Cycle: interrupted.] And finally: [Future path: undetermined.] Zayn stared at the words. The system was no longer giving him a direction. No next Downfall. No General to defeat. No door to open. No hero to kill. Nothing. The window disappeared. Lena stood up.
"You should rest."
"I just spent nine days unconscious."
"That wasn't rest."
"I had my eyes closed. That counts."
"No." Zayn looked at her.
"You've become bossy." She stayed silent. Then she asked,"Why didn't you kill me?" Elias turned away from the window. Narek raised his head slightly. Zayn watched Lena for a long time.
"Did you want me to?"
"No."
"Then don't ask stupid questions."
"That isn't an answer."
"It's the only one you'll get." Lena lowered her eyes. She did not ask for forgiveness. Not this time. That was perhaps the first thing she had done correctly. The capital had survived. That was the word used everywhere. Survived. Not won. Not triumphed. Not defeated the Demon King. Survived. Part of the central palace no longer existed. Three districts had been evacuated. The towers of the College had collapsed or remained leaning over the streets like mages too tired to fall properly.
If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. The walls still bore the marks of the battle against Maelor. Blue. Red. Black. The people emerged slowly from the shelters. They rebuilt doors, carried stones, searched for the names of the dead. They did not sing for the heroes. They did not throw flowers. This story had left them no victory clean enough to celebrate. When Zayn crossed the city eleven days after waking, fear went ahead of him.
Conversations stopped. Children were pulled back toward their parents. Soldiers grabbed their weapons, then looked at Elias walking a few steps behind him and let them fall again. Zayn walked slowly. Not by choice. His body would allow nothing else. He wore a dark coat to hide the marks and wounds. His scythe was not visible, but everyone felt that it could appear at the first hostile movement. Narek walked to his right. Not quite with him. Not quite against him. Lena and Mira followed farther back.
Jonah stayed near Elias, both arms still bandaged. Ivara carried a new blank volume against her chest. Garron closed the procession. He limped worse than before, and his armor had been replaced by a rough coat. Soren was beside him. His left sleeve had been carefully folded and tied beneath the shoulder. He noticed Zayn's gaze.
"You could at least look guilty." Zayn looked at the empty space where his arm used to be.
"You can still hold a dagger."
"I used to hold two."
"Now you'll cost less in equipment." Soren fell silent. Then he smiled.
"I knew you'd eventually find the right argument." Garron sighed.
"You're both unbearable."
"You stayed," Zayn noted. The mercenary shrugged.
"I still haven't been paid." Ivara turned around.
"The institutions that signed your contract have almost all lost their leadership." Garron looked at Zayn.
"Yes. I had noticed."
"Then you will probably never be paid," she added. The mercenary thought about it.
"In that case, I'll have to pretend I was here out of conviction." Soren nodded gravely.
"No one will believe you."
"That's why it might work." They reached the central square. The statues of the old heroes had been removed. Not destroyed. Moved. For the first time, the center of the capital was not celebrating a military victory. In the middle of the square, a structure of dark glass had been raised. Inside it stood Maelor's broken staff. Nothing else. No representation of the archmage. No carved crown. No enormous Maelor towering over the people he had protected. Only his staff. Split down the middle.
The stone of its magical core had gone dark. Around it, blue ribbons had been tied by the townspeople. Names had been written on them. Some belonged to soldiers. Others to civilians. Others still to the people saved by the archmage's final barriers. On the pedestal, two words had been engraved. HE STAYED. Zayn stopped. The entire square was watching him. He felt the mark of Lust react. Center of the World was waiting. He could stop them from looking away.
Force this crowd to stare at the Demon King standing before the symbol of the man he had killed. He let the skill sleep. Some citizens lowered their heads. Others stared at him with hatred. A mother held her child tighter. An old man spat on the ground. Zayn did not force them to do otherwise. Elias came to stand beside him.
"He would have hated this," Zayn said.
"That's why we didn't make a statue." Zayn looked at the staff.
"Who chose the words?"
"No one."
"That means nothing."
"Several people proposed the same thing." Zayn stayed silent. He saw Maelor alive again. Then dead. Then standing after death. Fourth day. I think I have to. You were a boy. I'm sorry I didn't open the door. The square blurred for a second. Zayn blinked. The world became sharp again.
"He protected me," he murmured. Elias did not answer.
"Then he protected you from me."
"Yes."
"And now you're going to turn him into a story." Ivara had joined them. She held the blank volume in her arms.
"Not like before." Zayn looked at her.
"You think you can stop the lies?"
"No."
"Then what's the point of your book?" She opened the cover. The first page bore a title: HISTORY OF THE INTERRUPTED CYCLE Below it, there was no author's name.
"To leave behind a version someone can contest," Ivara said.
"A single history becomes a religion. Multiple testimonies become a memory." Mira placed a hand on the book.
"I'll add the full reports. The ones that weren't altered." Jonah looked away. Then back at Zayn.
"I'll add what I thought of you before I ever spoke to you." Zayn arched a brow.
"You want to immortalize your stupidity?"
"Apparently, that's necessary." Lena stepped forward as well.
"I'll write that I came to see you." Zayn stared at her. She continued:"And that I left with them." He did not answer. Elias looked at the staff.
"The kingdom will have to know the decisions made in the summoning chamber. The signatures. The transfers. Rhel-Fosse."
"The kingdom will prefer a simpler monster," Zayn said.
"Yes."
"And you?" Elias turned his tired face toward him.
"Me too, probably." The honesty surprised Zayn.
"But I don't have that right anymore." In the square, the people continued to watch them. Not all of them. Some had already gone back to work. The Demon King was no longer the forced center of their world. Zayn looked once more at Maelor's staff. He raised one hand. The soldiers tensed. But he did not touch the glass. He only pressed two fingers against his own chest. Where Maelor's last spell had struck him. Then he lowered his hand.
"He was irritating." Elias smiled faintly.
"Yes."
"Too prepared."
"Yes."
"Convinced he always had one last solution."
"Yes." Zayn looked at the two engraved words. HE STAYED.
"Keep his staff here." Elias nodded.
"No one will move it." Zayn turned away.
"That wasn't a request." The human institutions no longer knew how to function. The Clergy had lost its highest prelates. The Circle of Ashes had lost its commander and much of its secret archive. The Crown had survived, but several ministers were no longer there to sign the orders they had once drafted without looking at their consequences. Elias refused to take power. They offered it to him anyway. A temporary crown. Supreme command. The title of Protector of the Alliance. He refused everything.
"A world that has just understood the danger of roles handed out too early should not begin by offering me another one." Instead, a provisional council was formed with representatives from the cities, the College, the surviving clergy, and the border communities. It was not just. It was not stable. It was only less certain. And this time, uncertainty seemed preferable. Mira stopped trying to reduce Zayn to a sum of measurements. She kept all of her analyses anyway.
"To understand him?" he asked.
"No. To remember that the numbers prevented nothing." Jonah did not forgive him. He did not even try. Before Zayn's departure, they met by the eastern gate. Jonah stood with his arms crossed against his bandaged chest.
"I still think you should have died." Lena closed her eyes. Elias did not interrupt. Zayn answered:"And I still think your reputation was better than you were." Jonah gave a brief laugh.
"At least we're honest."
"That's new for you."
"For you too." They looked at each other. Not as friends. Not reconciled. But neither of them was trying anymore to pretend that the other was only a story told by someone else. Soren came next. A single dagger now hung at his right hip.
"The next time we fight, I'm taking your arm." Zayn looked at the empty sleeve.
"To balance things?"
"For aesthetics."
"Try." Garron moved beside him.
"There won't be a next time." Soren looked at him.
"You're becoming optimistic?"
"No. I'm trying to avoid unpaid commitments." Ivara held out a sheet torn from her new book. It contained only one sentence. The Demon King was neither defeated nor forgiven. He chose to leave. Zayn read it.
"It's incomplete."
"Obviously."
"Then why give it to me?"
"So that you know what version exists before the others begin." He folded the sheet and slid it into his coat. Mira watched him do it.
"You're keeping it?"
"I'm short on paper." No one believed him. Lena was the last. She stopped in front of him. For several seconds, she said nothing. Zayn waited.
"You're not going to ask for forgiveness?" She shook her head.
"No."
"Good."
"I just wanted to say goodbye."
"You did." She gave a sad smile.
"Were you already this annoying before?"
"You didn't know me well enough to tell." The words hurt. But she accepted them.
"That's true." Zayn walked past her. Lena turned around.
"Zayn." He stopped. Not fully.
"I'm glad you didn't die." He did not answer. Then he kept walking. It was not forgiveness. But this time, he did not reject the words. Narek was waiting outside the walls. A light pack over his shoulder. His clothes did a poor job hiding his alterations. A few travelers looked at him with fear. He bared his teeth at those who stared too long. Zayn stopped in front of him.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm coming."
"Why?"
"I want to recover the real memories."
"They may no longer be reachable."
"Then I want to know what happened to them." Zayn looked eastward. Toward the demon realm. Toward Nhaless. Toward the mirrors Seryth still had left.
"She's still alive." Narek tightened his claws.
"I know."
"Do you want me to kill her?" He hesitated. Then shook his head.
"I want to decide when I see her." Zayn looked at him. For a long time.
"Fine." Narek frowned.
"Fine?"
"I won't kill her for you." A flicker of anger passed through the red eye. Then Zayn added:"With you, if you choose." Narek fell silent. They began to walk. After a few steps, the young beastman asked,"You really plan to return to the Throne?"
"It's my kingdom."
"You destroyed half the people who governed it."
"That simplifies administration." Narek looked at him sideways.
"You have no idea how to rule."
"No."
"That's worrying."
"You can leave."
"No." A silence. Then Narek added:"I don't forgive you." Zayn kept walking.
"I know."
"I don't trust you."
"I know."
"I might still try to kill you." This time, Zayn smiled.
"Try reaching fifty soul strength without burning your life away first." Narek punched him in the shoulder. Zayn nearly fell. The young beastman caught him by reflex. They both froze. Narek let him go immediately.
"You're really weak."
"I was unconscious for nine days."
"Lena said that doesn't count as rest." Zayn turned an irritated look toward him.
"You all talked a lot." Narek bared his teeth.
"Nine days is a long time." They resumed walking. Behind them, the human capital kept living beneath a sky no longer protected by Maelor. At the center of its square, his broken staff remained standing. People came to leave names there. Not prayers. Names. To remember that protecting the world had never been an abstract idea. It meant staying in front of specific people. Even the guilty. Even the monsters. Even after one's own death. The demon kingdom did not celebrate Zayn's return. It bowed.
He preferred the difference. At Ghelkar, the survivors of Cassiel closed their vaults. At Nhaless, the mirrors turned their surfaces away when Narek passed near them. At Vhur, the dead forges produced one last red spark in recognition of the unstable blood in Zayn's veins. Morvessa did not leave her domain. She only sent a letter. It contained a single sentence: You interrupted the cycle. That was probably tiring. Come bother me again in a century. Zayn burned it. Narek read over his shoulder.
"I like her."
"No."
"You don't get to decide that for me."
"Yes, I do. I'm king."
"That's not how that works."
"We'll see." Lyséa was waiting for them outside the Forbidden Realm. In human form. Her wounds from the battle against the heroes had almost disappeared, but a thin white line still ran along her neck, where Elias's sword had struck her. She bowed to Zayn. Not as deeply as the first time. This time, she no longer had to gamble.
"My King." Zayn looked at her scar.
"They beat you." Lyséa smiled.
"There were many of them."
"Weak excuse."
"They learned I was a subordinate. It damaged their morale considerably." Narek stared at her.
"You're the queen of dragons?" She turned an amused gaze toward him.
"And you must be the problem Seryth left behind." He bared his teeth.
"I'm nobody's problem." Lyséa's smile widened.
"He'll survive well here." Elyra was waiting farther up. At the foot of the road leading to the Throne. Lumeï floated near her shoulder, brighter than in the human lands. The elven princess watched Zayn approach. Then Narek. Then Zayn again.
"You came back."
"Apparently." She looked over his wounds.
"You left alone so I wouldn't see you almost die?"
"I left alone because you would have slowed the trip." Lumeï crackled.
"Liar." The fused scythe appeared behind Zayn.
"Finally, someone sensible." Elyra sighed. Then looked at Narek.
"I'm Elyra."
"Narek."
"I know." He tensed. Elyra added:"Zayn spoke about you in his sleep, after Vhur." Zayn snapped his head toward her.
"No."
"Yes."
"I was unconscious. That doesn't count." Narek looked at Elyra.
"What did he say?"
"Nothing clear. Only your name." Zayn resumed walking.
"This conversation is over." Narek and Elyra exchanged a look. Lumeï murmured:"This is going to take a while." The Black Throne was cracked. The line born when the cycle was interrupted ran through the backrest, down across the seat, and continued into the seven steps. The seat still held. But it was no longer intact. It was no longer certainty. Zayn stopped before it. The last time, the Throne had found him. This time, it did nothing. No memory. No voice. No pressure. It was waiting for a decision it did not know.
Lyséa, Elyra, and Lumeï remained behind. Narek climbed the steps with Zayn. The fused scythe vibrated.
"You should sit." Zayn looked at the seat.
"Why?" The weapon stayed silent. That was the problem. There was no longer an inscribed reason. No succession left to complete. No cycle left to continue. Zayn ran one hand over the crack. The Throne was cold. Narek stepped beside him.
"So what are you going to do now?" Zayn looked out over the kingdom beyond the steps. The broken domains. The Generals dead or submitted. The demons waiting for an order. The humans rebuilding without Maelor. Seryth hidden behind her last mirrors. Narek alive, altered, still not knowing which parts of his memory truly belonged to him. Elyra, who had wanted to stop a man from becoming a calamity and who was nevertheless standing behind a Demon King. He thought of the first King.
Of the persecuted being who had collapsed in the east of a new world. Of all the lives that followed. Of all the heroes. Of all the deaths. A thousand years. Then another thousand. Always a next step. Always a vengeance already prepared. This time, nothing. Zayn sat down on the first step. Not on the Throne. On the step. Narek raised a brow.
"That's not very royal."
"Shut up."
"You really don't know what to do." Zayn looked toward the horizon.
"No." Narek sat down beside him. The two remained silent before a kingdom that no longer knew what story to tell. Far away, the demon sky began to lighten. Not much. A thin gray line appeared behind the mountains of Vhur. The first morning of a world that was no longer waiting for the ending that had been prepared. Zayn lifted his eyes. For the first time in millennia, the Demon King did not know what would come next. And for the first time, it belonged to him.
A final window appeared: [Deep Title: King of the Beginning and the End]
