The territory collapsed around them. The glass walls of the summoning hall shattered without a sound. The ancient Demon Kings vanished one after another, taking the images of their deaths with them. The heroes of previous cycles broke apart into fragments of white light. The circle beneath Elias cracked. Zayn remained standing in the middle of the ruins of his own skill. Barely. His scythe hung in his hand. His wings could no longer stay spread.
The right one trembled with every breath; the left was held together only by strips of black flesh and a few exposed bones. He had pulled the blade away from Elias's throat. He had left him his weapon. And now, Territory Extension was casting both of them back into the real world. Elias tightened his grip on his broken sword.
"The next decision will be yours," Zayn had said. Then the light swallowed them. They reappeared in the ruined atrium. The return was violent. Elias hit the ground on his back, slid through the rubble, and stopped at the foot of a cracked column. Zayn landed on his feet. For one second. Then his knee struck the stone. The scythe drove into the floor to keep him from collapsing completely. Everyone else reacted. Jonah threw himself toward Elias. Lena raised hands bathed in healing light.
Mira opened three analysis circles. Ivara tore a page from her book. Garron uncoiled his last chain. Soren, pale, one arm gone, raised his remaining dagger. Narek tried to straighten against the wall. For a few seconds, none of them understood what had happened inside the territory. They saw only the result. Elias was alive. Zayn too. But something had changed. Zayn's scythe was lowered. Elias still had his sword. And the Demon King was on his knees. Mira read the windows appearing before her.
The color drained from her face. [Zayn Veylor.] [Physical state: imminent collapse.] [Vital force: critical.] [Regeneration: saturated.] [Territory Extension: forced rupture.] Then another line appeared. Older. Written in the same language as the Throne's messages. [Historical configuration incomplete.] Mira whispered,"What does that mean?" Elias slowly pushed himself up. Every breath tore pain through his ribs. His shoulder was bleeding. A red line still ran down his neck, where the scythe had stopped.
Jonah reached him.
"What did he do to you?" Elias did not answer. His eyes stayed fixed on Zayn. The tip of his heroic blade touched the floor. The sword was nearly dead. Only half of it remained, crossed with white cracks. But the light within it still existed. Enough for one strike. Lena understood first. She looked at Zayn on his knees. Then at Elias.
"He let you come back armed." Jonah turned to her in disbelief.
"What?" Elias got fully to his feet. With difficulty.
"He had won." Silence fell. Even Narek stopped trying to move. Elias went on:"In the territory. He had disarmed me. His blade was at my throat." Garron looked at Zayn.
"And he missed?"
"No." Elias tightened his grip on his sword.
"He chose not to strike." No one spoke. Zayn let out a weak laugh.
"Don't give that too much nobility." His voice was broken. He slowly raised his face. Without his mask, nothing stood between his expressions and the others' eyes. His scars were visible. Dried blood had blackened his cheek. His eyes carried a fatigue that reached far beyond the last few days.
"I didn't spare him because I forgave him." He looked at Elias.
"I spared him because killing him would have been exactly what the cycle expected." Ivara froze.
"The cycle…" Zayn turned his eyes to her.
"The Demon King kills the hero. The others avenge him. Or the hero kills the Demon King and the world waits a thousand years for the same soul to return." The forbidden pages trembled in Ivara's hands.
"The same soul?" Mira looked at her.
"You knew?"
"No." Ivara seemed to have forgotten the fight.
"The texts said the Throne recalled a sovereignty. Not a person." Zayn smiled faintly.
"The texts were wrong." The system flickered before them. [Victorious Demon King: execution refused.] [Historical sequence interrupted.] Jonah looked at the lines.
"So it's over?"
"No," Zayn answered. He tried to stand. His arm gave way. The scythe slipped in his hand. He stayed on his knees.
"Now it's his turn." All of them turned toward Elias. The sentence grew heavier the more they understood it. Elias was standing. Zayn could almost no longer move. One strike. Only one. The Demon King had defeated Vaelthor, taken the Throne, killed Maelor, broken through the capital's forces, and fought the entire raid. Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings. But his body had reached its limit. The light of Elias's sword could still reach his heart.
Jonah moved to stand beside him.
"Do it." Lena snapped her head toward him.
"Jonah…"
"He just massacred the kingdom's leaders. He killed Maelor. He almost killed us." He pointed at Soren.
"He cut off his arm." Soren, leaning against Garron, let out a faint laugh.
"I can confirm that. I wasn't deeply attached to it, but still." Jonah did not smile.
"We will never get a better chance." Garron tightened his chain.
"For once, I agree with the nervous one." Lena stared at them.
"He refused to kill Elias."
"And?" Garron asked.
"Does that erase the Council chamber? Does that bring Maelor back?"
"No." The answer came from Elias. He stepped forward. One step. The tip of his sword scraped across the stone. Zayn looked up at him.
"What are you waiting for?" Elias did not answer.
"You saw the bodies. You know what I did. You know what I may still do." The fused scythe shifted faintly in Zayn's hand.
"He won't leave you a second chance," it whispered. Zayn ignored it. He opened his arms slightly. Not like an invitation. Like someone refusing to beg.
"Go on." Elias raised his sword. White light returned along the broken metal. It illuminated Zayn's face. Lena took a step.
"Elias…" He raised his free hand without turning. She stopped. This choice had to be his. Not Lena's. Not the kingdom's. Not Maelor's. Not even the old heroes'. The system understood. Black and white letters appeared before him. [Historical configuration recognized.] [Summoned hero armed.] [Demon King vulnerable.] [Final blow available.] The light of the sword grew. The Black Throne beat at the far edge of the world. The entire continent felt it. In the ruins of Vhur, the dead forges answered.
In the broken vaults of Ghelkar, the last rings trembled. In the mirrors of Nhaless, Seryth's reflection froze. At Velmour, Lyséa suddenly lifted her eyes westward. At Thaal, Morvessa straightened for the first time in years. The cycle recognized its ending. The hero was going to kill the Demon King. As always. Zayn saw the Throne's memories overlap Elias. A woman with a golden spear. A child carrying a sword too large for him. An old man summoned into a young body. Faces from other worlds.
Strangers who became saviors because they delivered the final blow. Behind them, he saw his own deaths. Each face different. Each body pierced. Each Demon King looking at the hero in the final instant with the confused feeling of having already lived through this scene. The world forgot. The Throne remembered. Elias placed the tip of his sword before Zayn's heart. The mark of Lust pulsed. Not to activate Center of the World. It did not need to anymore. All eyes were already on him. Zayn smiled faintly.
"There." His voice was almost nothing more than a breath.
"The perfect story." Elias tightened his grip.
"Shut up."
"The hero arrives too late, discovers the massacre, faces the monster, and kills it." Zayn looked at the bodies around them.
"They'll erase everything else." Elias did not move.
"They'll erase Maelor, who knew I was a boy before I was a threat. They'll erase Narek. They'll erase the chamber. Rhel-Fosse. The decisions. The signatures." His gaze returned to Elias.
"They'll only say you saved the world." The blade trembled. Jonah shouted,"Don't listen to him!" Elias closed his eyes for one second. Then opened them again.
"If I kill you now…" The room fell silent.
"They'll say the hero defeated the Demon King." Zayn was no longer smiling. Elias looked around him. The bodies of the high officials. Soren's arm. Jonah's injuries. Mira almost unable to hold her circles. Ivara and her burned book. Garron standing despite his broken ribs. Lena covered in the blood of those she had kept alive. Narek warped by Seryth's seed. Maelor's staff in the distance. Then the capital. The kingdom that had built this story before any of them understood its rules.
"They'll say it was all simple," Elias continued.
"That you were evil. That we were good. That we came here to do what had to be done." The tip of the sword touched Zayn's torn clothing. Just above his heart.
"And in a thousand years, no one will remember what the world did to you before you became its monster." Jonah shook his head.
"Elias, he's trying to stop you!"
"No." Elias was still looking at Zayn.
"He's waiting to see whether I'll do exactly what he's seen happen thousands of times." Ivara murmured,"If you refuse, we do not know what will happen to the cycle." Elias answered without looking at her,"That's exactly the problem."
"You could condemn the world."
"And killing him might only condemn another world in a thousand years." Ivara fell silent. She knew he was right. The texts never spoke of a final end. Only of a victory. Then a new cycle. Zayn was breathing harder and harder.
"Are you looking for a justification because you're afraid to strike?" Elias let out a brief laugh. Exhausted.
"Maybe." The answer surprised everyone.
"I don't have your certainty," he continued.
"I don't know whether letting you live will save anyone. I don't know whether you'll leave to rule or come back tomorrow to finish this massacre." He tightened his grip on the sword.
"I don't know whether I'll regret this decision until my death." Zayn raised his chin slightly.
"Then strike."
"No." The word was calm. The light of the sword flickered.
"Why?" Elias looked at the old system windows. [Final blow available.]"Because I refuse to give them another story this clean." Then he lowered his weapon. The tip moved away from Zayn's heart. The system froze. One second. Two. Then the letters began to shake. [Final blow available.] Elias stepped back. [Final blow available.] He let go of his sword. The broken metal struck the floor. The sound rang out like a bell. The windows exploded. Not into light. Into black fragments.
The Throne beat so hard that Zayn doubled over. An ancient pressure entered his soul. The cycle refused. The marks of his Downfalls all lit up at once. The scythe screamed.
"What have you done?" The floor was covered in black and white lines. [Error.] [The Demon King refused execution.] [The summoned hero refused the final blow.] [Historical outcome not found.] The last barrier Maelor had left trembled. In the sky, a crack appeared at the center of the blue. Mira looked up.
"The system's structure is collapsing!" Ivara opened her book. Every page still intact filled with writing she had never seen before.
"No…"
"What?" Garron asked. She read. Her voice shook.
"It's searching for an ending." The pressure grew. The stone burst apart around Zayn and Elias. Jonah placed himself in front of Lena despite his broken arms. Garron wrapped his chain around a column and caught Soren. Mira drove her staff into the floor. Ivara clutched her book to her chest. Narek dug his claws into the stone. Zayn remained at the center. The Throne's memories tore through his mind. The first Demon King in the east of the world. The first death. The first summoned hero. A thousand years.
A new birth. A new vengeance. A new blade. Again. Again. Again. The cycle did not know what to do without a corpse. So it tried to force them back into place. An invisible force lifted Elias's sword. Elias stepped back.
"I'm not controlling it!" The broken blade turned toward Zayn. The fused scythe moved in the Demon King's hand. Not by his will. The black skull opened its sockets. The blade turned toward Elias. The roles were trying to finish the fight in their place.
"Drop it!" Lena shouted. Zayn opened his fingers. The scythe remained stuck to his palm.
"Theft Right," he growled. The mark of Greed pulsed. Nothing. The Throne held an older right over the weapon. Elias tried to tear his sword away from the air. Heroic light coiled around his arm and forced him to advance. One step. Then another. Zayn too was pulled toward him. The scythe rose. The system wrote: [Cycle correction.] [Mutual execution authorized.]"No," Elias whispered. The two weapons prepared to strike. Zayn looked at the scythe. Then at the sword. Then at Elias.
The world had accepted their refusal only as an error to be corrected. Like everything that had begun with him. An anomaly. A false reading. A thing to be forced back into its assigned place. The mark of Pride burned around his neck. Zayn straightened. Not fully. Enough.
"I already let Vaelthor decide what height meant once." The pressure of the Throne increased. His palm tore open around the shaft.
"I let the humans decide what I was." He pulled his arm backward. The scythe resisted. The flesh of his fingers tore away.
"I let the dead decide what I should avenge." Elias struggled against his own sword. The point moved closer to Zayn's heart.
"And now," the Demon King continued, "even my end would belong to someone else?" Every mark opened. Wrath. Envy. Gluttony. Greed. Sloth. Pride. Lust. Zayn screamed. He did not let go of the scythe. He stripped it of the right to move in his place. Theft Right crashed down on his own link to the Throne. Time in Ruins wore away the ancient command. Gluttony bit into the pressure running through his arm. Envy stole a fraction of the cycle's authority. The Locks of Ghelkar sealed that authority inside him.
Wrath burned the command. Lust forced the system itself to look at him as a person instead of a role. And Pride asserted one single thing: his decision stood above the ending that had been prepared. The scythe stopped. A few centimeters from Elias's throat. The Demon King was shaking all over. Then he lowered the weapon.
"No." The word passed through the system. Elias saw what he was doing. He looked at his sword still pulling his arm toward Zayn. Then he understood. The choice was not over. Refusing the blow had not been enough. He had to refuse the role. He put his left hand on the cracked blade. The light burned his palm.
"This sword does not make me a hero." The weapon pulled harder. His muscles tore.
"They gave me that title before I chose anything." He clenched his teeth.
"So here is my first choice that will not belong to their ritual." He bent the blade. The metal resisted. White light flooded his hands. Elias screamed. Then the heroic sword broke completely. The two pieces fell. The light went out. The entire system fell silent. The Throne beat one last time. Not like an order. Like a heart that had just missed its rhythm. Ancient lines appeared in the sky. [Demon King: execution refused.] [Summoned hero: final blow refused.] [Correction impossible.] A pause. Long.
The world waited for something that had never happened before. Then the final line wrote itself. [Cycle interrupted.] The silence that followed was absolute. In the east, the Black Throne cracked. Not entirely. A single line appeared from the top of the backrest to the seat. At Velmour, Lyséa closed her eyes. At Nhaless, Seryth stopped laughing. At Thaal, Morvessa murmured:"Finally, something new." In the capital, Maelor's last barrier lit up one final time. Then it detached from the sky.
Thousands of blue fragments drifted down over the streets like slow snow. Not destruction. A farewell. Lena lifted her eyes.
"Maelor…" The light passed through them. One fragment stopped for a moment near Zayn. It hovered before his face. Then vanished. Zayn did not know whether it was only the remnant of magic. Or whether Maelor had waited long enough to see this ending. At last, his body stopped holding. He fell onto his side. Lena moved by reflex. Jonah caught her arm.
"What are you doing?" She looked at Zayn on the ground.
"He's going to die."
"Maybe that's better." Narek lifted his head.
"No." Everyone turned toward him. The young beastman leaned against the wall. His body still shook under the seed's aftereffects. His claws had carved grooves into the stone. He looked at Zayn. Not with forgiveness. Not with trust. But with a decision that finally belonged to him.
"He doesn't get to die before I know what's true." Garron exhaled.
"That is an incredibly personal reason to keep a Demon King alive." Narek bared his teeth weakly.
"Yes." Soren, pale against his shoulder, murmured,"I like him." Lena pulled free of Jonah's hand. This time, he did not stop her. She knelt beside Zayn. Her light settled over his chest. The magic hesitated. The seven Downfalls reacted like wounded animals. Lena did not try to purify them. She only kept his heart going. Zayn opened his eyes slightly. He saw her. Then Elias, standing without a sword. Then Jonah. Mira. Ivara. Garron and Soren. Narek. All of them still alive. He let out a weak laugh.
"You're all really bad at ending stories." Elias sat down heavily on a broken stone.
"You too." Zayn closed his eyes. The mark of Lust pulsed one last time. Center of the World was still available. He could force them to look at him. He could impose his presence. Demand that they witness his departure, his pain, his victory. He did not activate it. On the contrary, something loosened. [Center of the World: voluntarily deactivated.] For the first time since the massacre, each of them was fully free to look away. No one did. Zayn drew a difficult breath.
"I don't forgive you." Elias answered:"I know."
"I do not regret all the people I killed in that chamber." Jonah clenched his jaw.
"I know." Zayn opened his eyes again. The sky above the capital showed through the ruins, filled with Maelor's last blue fragments.
"But I refuse to die in the ending your world had prepared for me." Elias looked at him.
"Then don't die." A faint smile crossed Zayn's face.
"That almost sounded like a hero's order."
"I don't have a sword anymore."
"That doesn't stop you from being irritating." Then his eyes closed. This time, he did not die. He fell asleep. And somewhere in the east, before a Black Throne now split by a crack, a thousand years of history finally stopped knowing what was supposed to happen next.
