Nineteen hours. That was how long I had been on my feet at the hospital. For an AIIMS Delhi MBBS graduate and a gold medalist in cardiothoracic surgery, you'd think the universe would grant me a little mercy. But the human heart doesn't respect shift schedules, and neither did the emergency ward.
"Arre, Rudra beta, go home. Your eyes look like two bloodshot tomatoes," the head nurse, Sister Mary, had scolded me as I finally unscrubbed. I had just smiled, too exhausted to even fire back a witty reply. I grabbed my car keys, stepped out into the humid night, and started my sedan. My parents had sacrificed everything so their only son could wear this white coat. They passed away before they could see me hold that gold medal, but every single day I worked myself to the bone, I did it to make them proud.
But nineteen hours is nineteen hours. By the time I hit the dark, winding highway back to my apartment in Uttar Pradesh, my eyelids felt like they were carrying sandbags. The road was a blur of asphalt and moonlight. I blinked once. Twice.
Moooo. My eyes snapped open. Right in the middle of the high-beam headlights stood a massive, completely oblivious cow, chewing on a piece of plastic." Arre, hatto! Move!" I slammed on the brakes. The tires shrieked.
BAAM. There was a moment of weightlessness and a deafening crunch of metal. Everything went black for a microsecond. Then, suddenly, the noise stopped. I was standing on the asphalt. My car was wrapped around a tree, smoking heavily. But oddly enough, I felt completely fine. In fact, I felt lighter than I had in years." Wait," I muttered, looking back at the road. The cow was completely unharmed, blinking at the wreckage.
"Oh, thank God. Public safety hazard avoided." A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation." Am I... hallucinating? Is this a sleep-deprivation induced psychosis?" I asked, checking my own pulse. I couldn't find one.
"You passed away on impact, Dr. Rudra," a deep, booming voice echoed. I whipped around. The highway was gone. Instead, I was standing in a massive, ancient courthouse made of dark stone and glowing gold. Sitting on a towering throne was a muscular man with a thick mustache and a divine crown, looking incredibly stressed. Next to him stood a sharp-dressed man holding a glowing, holographic ledger. It was Yamraj, the God of Death, and his legendary assistant, Chitragupta.
"Sir, look at this," Chitragupta said, tapping the ledger. A massive digital bar chart popped up in the air. The " Bad Deed"side was practically empty, but the" Good Deed" side was glowing so bright it looked like a solar flare.
"His Karma Meter is completely maxed out. He spent his entire life saving people at AIIMS Delhi. But according to the cosmic schedule, his time wasn't up for another forty years! He died early because he swerved to save a cow!" Yamraj massaged his temples, Board sighing deeply.
"A glitch in the mortal realm. Rudra Mishra, your sudden death has thrown off our accounting. Because your karma is overflowing and your time isn't up, I am granting you a second chance at life."" Really? I get to go back?" I asked, my energetic nature kicking right back in.
"Not to Earth," Yamraj clarified.
"You shall be transported to a completely different world. A realm that runs on magic. In that world, when children turn 10, they go to a grand church to receive a divine 'Job' and their starting skills. Since you are starting over, you can choose a basic skill to take with you."
"Look, Yamraj ji," I raised my hands.
"I worked 19-hours shifts in India. I am exhausted. If I get an elite healing class, the locals will trap me in another hospital. Please, just give me the absolute lowest, most basic, garbage-tier healing skill you have. I want to explore. I want to see the mountains. I want to be a tourist!" Chitragupta adjusted his glasses and scrolled through the ledger.
"Very well. I will assign you the basic skill: [Minor Suture]. It is a common spell used to patch up small scratches. Farewell, Doctor." A massive golden magic circle opened beneath my feet. I started to sink into the light, a massive grin on my face. Finally! No more night shifts! Just pure, unadulterated vacation! But as my soul dissolved into the light, Chitragupta's ledger suddenly flashed bright red. A massive error code popped up.
[SYSTEM ERROR: JOB INTERACTION CONFLICT] [PROFILE] | [SKILLS] | [INVENTORY] | [SYSTEM] [OVERVIEW] TITLE: ISEKAI DOCTOR NAME: Rudra Mishra ATTRIBUTES: Intellect: (High) Agility: (High) Defense: (Low) Mana: (Moderate) Attack Power: (Adjusted to Moderate) [NARRATIVE EVENT LOG] [SUBJECT HAS NO 'JOB' ASSIGNED YET, BUT POSSESSES HIS DOCTOR MEMORIES] SKILL [SKILL EVOLUTION] [BASIC SKILL 'MINOR SUTURE' HAS MUTATED TO FIT REINCARNATOR'S INTELLECT] [SYSTEM NOTIFICATIONS] [LOGIC CORE EVOLVED: MICRO-CELLULAR MANIPULATION ACTIVATED] [FINAL RANK: SSS] Yamraj stood up from his throne, his eyes widening.
"Chitragupta... what just happened?" Chitragupta broke into a cold sweat, staring at the screen.
"Oh dear… Because he hasn't taken the official Church Job ceremony yet, the system didn't know how to cap his power. His heart surgeon brain just forced a basic tier skill to evolve into an SSS-rank anomaly…"
