"I'm sorry, good sir," the local guide said to the tourist group consisting of a human, a Changer, a tiwada, a pajhadin, a rakido, and a Kaedekin.
"I can't take you any further. That is the cursed city, filled with the restless spirits of the dead eager to add the living to their number. Only the warrior-priests of the gods or powerful wizards enter that place, and even then only in the full light of day." The human frowned.
"Why? Is it full of wild animals or something?"
"Oh no, good sir. There are no animals in the cursed city. They have long since learned to avoid this place, for the ghosts show them no mercy either." The human rolled his eyes.
"Well, it all sounds perfectly safe them." The local guide stared at him.
"Good sir, there is nothing safe about this place. There are walking corpses who would feed upon your flesh for their endless hunger, ghosts that would torment your mind as they fed upon your life to continue their empty existence, the hearts of wizards who have torn themselves from their dead chests to fulfill a lifetimes unsated desired—""Yes, yes, we heard you the first time," the human said dismissively.
"I'm sure it's perfectly safe. You said people enter during the day, after all."
"That is not what I just said you mother-rutting fool!" the local guise cried, slipping back into their own language.
"Watch the attitude," the human said sternly.
"Remember who's paying the bills." He looked back towards the rest of the group.
"Come on gang, let's check it out!" The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
"Bob, you heard what the man said about 'restless spirits', right?" the pajhadin said.
"Yeah, I heard. It's all superstitious nonsense," the human said dismissively.
"It's probably just a local gimmick. Bet there's a bunch of locals wearing zombie make-up or something—" ZAP! That was as far as he got before he collapsed like string with their puppet cut. The Kaedekin blew on her finger gun theatrically before grabbing the human before he hit the ground. She looked at everyone around her, including the local guide.
"All in favor of telling him he passed out from heat stroke while we were exploring the ruins and that it was so boring he forgot everything?" Everyone nodded—even the Changer—and the rakido picked up their unconscious idiot friend and walked back to their hotel. Behind them, something in the cursed city of Jalimao roared. Everyone broke into a run.
"I'm sorry, good sir," the local guide said to the all-human group of tourists about an hour later.
"I can't take you any further. That is the cursed city, filled with the restless spirits of the dead eager to add the living to their number. Only the warrior-priests of the gods or powerful wizards enter that place, and even then only in the full light of—Wait! Don't go there! O h, you mother-rutter! Rut this, I'm out of here, you crazy shits!" The tourists frowned.
"Clark, maybe we shouldn't go inside."
"This place is dead boring! Why do we have to climb a bunch of rocks on our vacation?!"
"Dad, I'm pretty sure that's a 'keep out' sign."
"No Rusty, that's just some of the local superstitious art. These are very poor and backwards people, so they use every part of the dead relative in their everyday life. I'm sure a row of sticks with skulls on top of them is just something they do to brighten the place up. Now, let's go exploring! It's the Grayrule family vacation, and we're going to check out some ancient alien culture—!" And they were never seen again.
