The evening check-in ran its usual course, names logged, positions confirmed, the Pact channel filling with the short, functional lines that meant everyone was where they said they'd be. Nobody made a joke about it tonight. Usually somebody did. The hall emptied out in stages after that, until it was down to a handful of people and then down to none at all except the two of them.
The lanterns along the far wall had been turned down for the night, leaving most of the room in the kind of half-dark that made staying feel like a choice rather than an accident. Finn hadn't planned on staying.
He'd found small things to do instead, re-checking gear that didn't need re-checking, reading a report he'd already read, and somewhere in the doing of those things he'd noticed that Lira was still at the board too, not doing anything with any real purpose, just standing near it in the low light with her arms crossed. Neither of them left. Neither of them said anything about not leaving either.
It felt, after a while, like its own kind of conversation, two people agreeing without words that the room could hold both of them a little longer.
"You knew him," Finn said eventually, not quite a question.
"Not well. Enough to offer." Lira didn't look over.
"Enough that it's not nothing." He thought about asking something else and didn't. She answered anyway, into the quiet, like the question he hadn't asked had already been sitting in the room waiting for someone to give it words.
"I traveled with three people before I got here," she said.
"Before any of this. Before the Pact was this." She uncrossed her arms, recrossed them the other way.
"We were doing fine. Careful. Then we hit Level 18 and two of them decided that was close enough to Ring 2. I said we should wait. So did the fourth. She actually made the argument better than I did. One more week, she said. Confirm the corridor, check the reports, don't be the group that finds out the hard way." If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. Finn didn't say anything. Just waited.
"We went anyway. Three to one isn't really a vote, it's just a headcount with extra steps." Lira's voice stayed level the whole way through, which was somehow worse than if it hadn't.
"Two of us made it back out. Sara wasn't one of them. The one who'd argued hardest for waiting was the one who didn't come back. I've had a long time to sit with it, and it never lands the way you'd think."
"That's not why the rule exists," Finn said.
"Not the version people probably assume."
"No. People assume I built the one rule because I'm cautious by nature. I built it because I watched caution lose a vote it should have won, and I decided I was never going to let it be a vote again." She finally looked over at him.
"That's the real version. Not the one I usually give people." Finn thought about what she'd handed him, and understood that whatever he said next needed to be a fact and not a feeling, because a feeling would have sounded like he was trying to make it smaller than it was.
"The data says waiting works," he said.
"The data says rushing doesn't. It works, what you've built." She looked at him for a long moment, something in her expression settling rather than shifting, like he'd confirmed a thing she already suspected about how he'd respond and was relieved, in some small way, to be right.
"So far," she said.
"but what happens when it doesn't?" Finn almost said something else after that. He had the beginning of it ready, something about how he understood, in his own way, what it was to watch a decision get made around you and lose, to have been the one arguing for the version of events that didn't happen. He got as far as opening his mouth on it and then didn't. It wasn't the moment for his data. It was already spoken for. Lira didn't seem to need him to finish it.
She'd gone back to looking at the board, at the blank line beneath Callum's name, and whatever she'd read in the half-second before he stopped talking seemed to be enough on its own. Neither of them tried to fill the space after that. The hall stayed quiet around them, and they stood there together in silence.
