The board had a rhythm to it most mornings. People checked it the way they checked anything else, half-attention on the way to somewhere else, and most days it gave back exactly what they expected: resource notes, threat updates, the occasional log entry from an op the night before. Finn was reading yesterday's cave-clearance data when Lira came through the common hall with a single sheet in her hand and pinned it to the board without a word. He didn't need to read all of it to understand what it was.
The header alone did the work. GLOBAL SURVIVOR LIST - UPDATED Callum Torres. Active to inactive. Northern corridor, Ring 2 approach. Cause unconfirmed. No check-in on record. Finn had never met him. He knew the name the way he knew a lot of names, from the channel, from the posts that scrolled past in the general feed the way weather scrolled past a window, present and then not. Callum had posted a decent amount, early on, mostly questions, the kind that read as genuinely curious rather than lazy.
He'd once corrected someone's gear math with more confidence than the correction strictly warranted and then, three posts later, admitted the correction had been wrong and apologized without making it into a production. His last post, days back now, had been short. Something about being close. Finn hadn't thought any of it worth remembering at the time. He was remembering all of it now, whether he wanted to or not. Around the hall, the reaction wasn't a reaction so much as an absence of one.
Higgs stopped what he was doing at the far table and went still for a few seconds before going back to it, slower than before, the kind of stillness that had nothing to do with surprise and everything to do with recognizing the situation. Hix, mid-sentence about something unrelated, simply didn't finish the sentence, and didn't try to pick it back up either.
Dani looked at the board, looked away, and didn't write anything down for a while, her hand resting flat on the table instead of moving across it, which for Dani was its own kind of statement. Nobody said anything to anybody else. It wasn't the kind of silence that needed filling. Lira didn't add a comment to the posting. She'd pinned it and stepped back and that was the whole of what she did, and Finn understood, watching her do it, that the absence of comment was itself a decision, not an oversight.
Some things didn't get better for being narrated. She'd learned that before he had. Find this and other great novels on the author's preferred platform. Support original creators! He knew the details of the offer because he'd been in the room when Lira made it, weeks back, one of the early outreach conversations before there'd been anything formal enough to call a protocol. Callum had been posting about Ring 2 with real urgency.
His level felt close enough to done that the danger read more like a formality than an actual risk. Lira had reached out directly, offering the corridor maps and a spot on the check-in list, no obligation beyond checking in. Callum had thanked her. He hadn't taken either one. Nobody had pushed. Pushing wasn't how the offer worked. The offer only worked if the person on the other end of it decided, on their own, that the risk was worth taking seriously. Finn didn't know why Callum had said no.
He'd never find out why, not with any certainty, and he understood on some working level that the not knowing was the actual loss, not just a gap in the data waiting to be filled in later. He stood at the board longer than the entry required, the way he had at nearly every board entry lately, except this one didn't resolve the way the others did. He thought about the maps Callum had turned down.
He made himself not ask whether having them would have changed anything, because the question had no answer that could be checked against reality, and a question with no answer wasn't data, it was just weight dressed up as a question. He thought about it anyway. He couldn't make himself stop. 【 AETHERFORGE NEXUS 】 Global Survivor List — Updated Callum Torres: Status changed ACTIVE to INACTIVE. Last known position: northern corridor, Ring 2 approach. Cause: unconfirmed. No check-in on record.
The line beneath it, where commentary usually sat, was blank. Not withheld. Just absent, the way a held breath is absent of sound rather than full of silence for its own sake. The hall went on with its morning the way halls did, in pieces, people drifting back to whatever they'd been doing before the board interrupted them. Higgs went back to his route notes and didn't look up again.
Hix left without saying where he was going, which was, this morning, its own small violation of the thing they all took seriously, and nobody called him on it. Dani closed her folder without finishing whatever she'd been working on. Finn didn't drift with the rest of the room. He stayed by the board a while longer, aware that Lira hadn't moved from her spot near it either, both of them not quite looking at each other and not quite looking away, and that neither of them seemed in any hurry to be the first to leave.
