Carl spoke. Barely.
"The classification is not personal." His voice was still tight, the containment from the recognition silence, holding something pressurized.
"They classify everything. The classification is the method. The method is the culture."
"And the culture composts the things it classifies as wrong." A pause.
"Yes."
"Is that what happened to your people?" 7. 1 seconds. Counting the delay was easier than pushing into it. A billion-year-old entity deciding whether to answer a question about a civilization that was dust before my species discovered fire.
"My people were not composted," Carl said.
"My people were refined. There is a difference in methodology. There is not a difference in outcome." My mug cracked. The assessment room's standard-issue drinking vessel, the one the processing protocol had provided with ergonomic precision, developed a hairline fracture running from rim to base under my grip. Not shattered. Cracked.
The ceramic yielding under pressure I hadn't registered applying, the material science of "I was holding it harder than I thought" scaled up by hands that could punch through containment rings. I set it down. The mug leaked onto the table's surface, a thin line of liquid tracing the fracture's path. The overlay: Ceramic failure. Your grip exceeded the material's compressive rating by 270%. This is the second involuntary material deformation event. I am keeping a log. The trend appears significant.
I hadn't noticed the grip. My hands had been listening to Carl's story and responding in the language hands understand: pressure, tension, the physical expression of a feeling I wasn't going to name while the feeling was still talking. No echo; the walls were calibrated to absorb reflections at precisely the frequency range that produced echoes.
Even the sound of difficult truths was optimized. Carl did not elaborate. I did not push. The consent protocol sat between us, a door that either of us could close, and right now both of us were standing in the doorway. The ghost moon hummed. The Orthodoxy's layer conducted the frequency through the station's walls, and the right hand pulsed warmer before settling. A phantom heartbeat.
The dead moon carrying the memory of a dead world through the walls of a civilization that had perfected the art of deciding what deserved to exist.
"Low-Res Assets," I said, mostly to myself.
"That's what they see."
"That is what they measure," Carl said.
"What they see and what they measure are the same thing. That is the limitation."
"And the biometric lock?" Carl's pause was 1. 6 seconds. Shorter than the genealogy pause. Longer than his usual pause.
"The lock is permanent. The sixth ring's documentation layer is integrated with the Orthodoxy's sensor network. Every action you take in controlled space will be recorded, broadcast, and filed. The containment rings were a response. The lock is a policy."
"So everything I do from now on is evidence."
"Everything you do from now on is visible. The distinction between evidence and visibility depends on whether someone is building a case." The shimmer cooled and stayed cool.
"Someone will be building a case." The classification landed in a new drawer. The drawer where I kept the things that were wrong about the universe's opinion of me. It was a small drawer. I'd need a bigger one. The assessment queue advanced. The next stage was processing. The processing involved a zone I hadn't seen yet: the margins of the garden, where the Orthodoxy sent the things it classified as waste. The composting district. I wasn't scheduled to go there.
But the engineer's instinct, the part of my brain that read civilizations by looking at what they threw away, was already pulling me toward the trash. You learn more about a building from its waste pipes than from its facade. You learn more about a civilization from its compost than from its Gold caste. The loop ran. The plan was forming. My hands were still shaking. The biometric lock was still broadcasting. And somewhere in the Orthodoxy's administrative machinery, a case file had just opened.
The first entry was a nosebleed.
