Ding! Congratulations! You have upgraded [Mantle of Dissolution (Law-bound — epic)] to [Mantle of Dissolution (Law-bound — Immemorial)]. [Mantle of Dissolution (Law-bound — epic)] — Formed from essence-infused ash bound directly to your channels and soul through the Law Seed of Dissolution, this mantle flows with movement, disperses under command, and hardens to intercept incoming attacks. Particulates may infiltrate organic matter, essence, and metaphysical structures alike.
Through Dissolution, the mantle strips away impurities and breaks down complex structures toward their most fundamental state. Sustained through continuous essence input. [Mantle of Dissolution (Law-bound — Immemorial)] — Formed from essence-infused ash bound directly to your channels and soul through the Law Seed of Dissolution, this mantle flows with movement, disperses under command, and hardens to intercept incoming attacks.
Particulates may infiltrate organic matter, essence, and metaphysical structures alike, stripping away impurities and breaking complex structures down toward their most fundamental state. Detached ash retains the aspect of Dissolution. By forcing additional essence through the tether, the mantle may expand into a self-sustaining Ashen Vortex capable of devouring organic matter caught within its radius. Sustained through continuous essence input. Cade immediately flicked the notification away from his mind.
He could examine the upgrade later after he was certain the Great Tree and every trace of Sildraxa's corruption had been completely destroyed. For now, he sat motionless at the center of the inferno while a storm of ash roared around him and clouds thundered overhead. Wood and corruption alike dissolved into drifting particulate streams before joining the vortex. The entire structure groaned and trembled as the storm devoured larger and larger sections of the ancient tree. Cade breathed slowly amidst it all.
Pure essence flooded into his channels with every inhale while desolation poured outward with every exhale. The rhythm had become automatic. Essence entered his body, cycled through his channels, then flowed outward through either his flames or the tether connected to his mantle. But Cade forced himself to remain aware of the world beyond the vortex. He no longer needed [Hyperfocused Meditation] to maintain control over the Ashen Vortex now that the rotational layers were self-sustaining.
Continuing to hyperfocus on the storm would only risk losing track of time, so he flicked his will and deactivated his meditation skill. Pain flooded back into his awareness the moment the skill faded. Cade grunted through an exhale as he felt the rhizome writhing beneath the ruined flesh around his eyes and across the sides of his face. Dozens of tiny roots slowly threaded through damaged tissue while faint pulses of pressure and multicolored lightning radiated behind his eyes.
The sensation was deeply unpleasant now that he could feel it again. At this point, he fully trusted the rhizome bound to his channels. He never sensed any outside will or malicious intent and the rhizome had only ever helped him. He didn't know exactly what it was doing, but it had helped prevent Sildraxa's corruption from overtaking him, so he allowed it to continue whatever strange process it was performing. He could feel that process was fueled by something within that he didn't understand.
Tiny points of pressure scattered throughout his entire body, almost like invisible threads buried deep within were pulled taut. From each point, an unfamiliar trickle continued feeding the rhizome. He had no idea what the rhizome had started drawing upon when he denied it both his essence and vitality. But considering he was currently sitting inside an apocalyptic vortex of desolation while mostly blind, this was not the time to chase that mystery. He would figure it out later.
Cade inhaled deeply again and fed the vastly amplified version of the Ashen Vortex. This was the same technique Brahm had used during their battle. Only his was powered by an amount of fuel the young tortoise could never access alone. The circumstances were simply different. During their fight, Brahm had been limited to whatever essence he could burn from the surrounding hollow and whatever reserves his Core could sustain. Compared to that, Cade was currently sitting inside an ocean of fuel.
The Great Tree contained absurd quantities of life essence, and every branch the vortex consumed only fed the storm further. Desolation fed upon life. It represented the end of growth itself. The end of transformation. The end of change. Cade remembered the Eye of Ash. Endless plains of pale cracked ground stretched beneath a dead gray sky where nothing moved. No insects. No birds. No life of any kind. Only stagnant air, oppressive silence, and the lingering sensation that the world itself had died long ago.
And sitting here amidst the roaring vortex, Cade understood a new aspect of the path he and Brahm shared. Desolation did not merely destroy and consume life. It erased possibility until only stagnant isolation remained. The Ashen Front had not truly marched together. The tortoises advanced as a single force, yet each spread destruction in isolation, wandering separate paths while burning life away around them. Cade felt a lump in his throat as the weight of that isolation settled over him.
Until now, he had buried any loneliness he felt beneath one brutal struggle after another. It felt like a lifetime since he had last seen his family. His dad and his twin sisters, Cassandra and Caylee. Why hadn't he reached out to them more before the System came? He hoped they were alright wherever the System had thrown them. If anyone could adapt to the System and a Tutorial, it was probably Caylee. She had always been the most driven, confident, and outgoing of the three of them. The most certain of herself.
But now, sitting at the center of the vortex and truly feeling the isolation of this Path, he longed to see his family again. To know that they were safe. To hear familiar voices instead of the roar of ash and wind. He had spent nearly his entire journey through Cynthia's Legacy alone. Sure, he had learned and fought beside the frogs and tortoises. He had rescued Aquelion. But none of them were truly close to him. None of them knew who Cade had been before the System.
None of them knew anything about his life beyond this realm. They knew him as the hatchling. The human. The outsider. None of the frogs or tortoises truly knew Cade Whitehollow—the man who had spent years stumbling through a life that never felt quite right. They didn't know about the soul-sucking routine of lab work and exhaustion that slowly drained the excitement out of what was supposed to be his dream career.
They didn't know about the doubts he carried, the constant feeling that everyone else seemed to just know how to live while he struggled to just get out of bed. The quiet insecurities that never fully left him. The lingering doubt that he had wasted years of his life working for a dream he never truly wanted. Cade immediately forced the emotions back down and steadied the vortex around him before the storm could destabilize. The last thing he needed right now was to accidentally shatter something inside his soul while sitting at the center of a cataclysm of desolation. One problem at a time. Just focus on burning the corruption from this realm. Cade exhaled another torrent of white fire while spiraling ash continued shredding apart the surrounding wood.
The storm around him was so large that he could barely sense its scale through his connection to the mantle. He only knew the Ashen Vortex was still consuming more and more of the Great Tree because the incoming flow of essence had not slowed. He inhaled another massive surge of pure essence from the vortex and he started to feel the strain building within his body as vast quantities of essence roared through his channels. Despite the nearly limitless fuel surrounding him, Cade knew he had reached his own limits.
His body could only circulate so much essence at once before his channels felt the strain. Cade could feel the Great Tree steadily disappearing around him while the vortex continued chewing downward through the colossal trunk. The tree groaned as the wood below began flexing. Cade pushed himself upright while keeping his focus locked on the Ashen Vortex. A second later the wood beneath him gave way in a slow crack. Cade dropped through collapsing wood and spiraling ash before slamming down onto solid ground below.
His knees bent reflexively on impact while loose dirt and ash shifted beneath his bare feet. He had burned completely through the Great Tree. Steadying himself, he focused inward on the tether to his mantle as he felt the vortex around him destabilize. Compacted dirt and buried roots resisted the storm far more than the Great Tree's trunk. This isn't enough, he thought. He needed to stabilize the storm, but his channels already felt dangerously close to rupturing beneath the strain.
Cade immediately cut off the flow of essence feeding his flames and redirected everything into the tether instead. Still not enough. Cade forced even more essence through the tether and immediately felt his channels strain beneath the pressure. He inhaled another breath of pure essence and the sensation intensified. He was dangerously close to rupture, but he needed to ensure every last bit of corruption was cleansed. Sharp pinpricks of tension all throughout his body suddenly constricted.
The sensation deepened as each pinpoint stretched wider beneath the pressure and pulled tighter from within, as though invisible hooks had sunk deep into both his flesh and channels before being violently drawn taut. Cade ignored the pain and pushed harder, forcing more essence through his channels until the winds surrounding him screamed louder. Dirt, ash, and dissolving roots tore upward into the Ashen Vortex as he felt the storm stabilize once more. Then notifications forced themselves into Cade's mind. Ding!
You have defeated [Corrupted Juvenile Swamp Leech — Level 11]. You have gained experience. You have defeated [Corrupted Ashworm — Level 16]. You have gained additional experience for killing a creature above your level. Race: [Human – (F)] has reached Level 15. +2 to all stats.
Dungeon Quest Updated: Cleanse Cynthia's Legacy Progress: Minor Corruption Cleansed: 59 / 100 Major Corruption Cleansed: 2 / 2 Prime Corruption Cleansed: 1 / 1 With the Ashen Vortex stabilized, Cade skimmed through the notifications before willing them closed. The Prime Corruption had been cleansed. He must have suppressed that notification earlier while fully focused on maintaining the vortex. Cade remembered seeing several corrupted leeches and ash worms burrow underground after Rowana fled from Vorduun.
The vortex must have uncovered them as the storm tore apart the ground beneath the Great Tree in Cade's determination to burn every last trace of corruption from the realm. A brief wave of unease passed through Cade's thoughts. What happened to Pearl? To Aquelion? To Vorduun and the other tortoises? His concentration wavered as worry pushed its way into his thoughts. Had they escaped in time or were they caught up in the storm?
Vorduun had promised they would burn the root-pillars once the corruption spread downward. If the old tortoise had any sense at all, then the moment he saw this vortex forming he would have dragged everyone out from beneath the Great Tree immediately. Cade's jaw tightened. He had to trust Vorduun's senses and judgment. He had promised to keep Pearl and Aquelion safe and Cade had no reason not to trust him. Cade grimaced at the thought of Pearl. The tortoises would probably be fine. Aquelion might survive.
But Pearl— The little frog would be stripped apart almost instantly if the vortex caught her. Her life essence fed directly into the raging currents before the ash consumed what remained. He forced the thought aside immediately. No. Vorduun would not let that happen. The former Duke, now Emperor, had to understand the danger of the Ashen Vortex the moment he sensed it.
If Cade had truly created something large enough to consume the entire Great Tree, and now the ground beneath, then Vorduun would have evacuated everyone long before the storm reached them. At least Cade hoped so, because stopping now was not an option. Not after everything he had seen. Not after witnessing the thing Sildraxa came from. Even a sliver of her corruption surviving was unacceptable.
So Cade continued feeding essence into the storm even as his channels bulged and the stabbing sensation in his flesh intensified. The Ashen Vortex screamed around him while white particulate layers tore through the ground. Every few seconds another notification flickered across his awareness. Ding! You have defeated [Corrupted Ashworm — Level 17]. You have gained additional experience for defeating a creature above your level. You have defeated [Corrupted Juvenile Swamp Leech — Level 12].
You have gained experience. More notifications came but Cade ignored them. Instead, a question popped into his mind. What was the purpose of these things? The leeches infested the swampy jungle of the frogs where life essence was abundant. They consumed life and growth while feeding upon creatures throughout the wetlands. And somehow, after consuming enough life essence, the leeches evolved into ash worms capable of producing more leeches.
His fight with the broodmother had already proven that much, but Cade still didn't understand how the transition actually occurred. Maybe the leeches buried themselves underground as the Ashen Front passed overhead. There they could remain dormant beneath the earth until the tortoises moved on and they could emerge as ash worms. The tortoises left vast plains of pure essence in their wake as they advanced. The essence itself was not especially potent, but they scattered enormous quantities of it behind them.
What if the ash worms fed on that? The worms could consume the residual essence left behind by the tortoises. Then once they accumulated enough, they returned toward the frog territories and reproduced, birthing more leeches. The pieces were clicking into place. The leeches and the worms formed their own cycle built around consuming life and pure essence before reproducing to start the cycle over again. But why? What purpose did any of it serve besides reproduction? Worms were useful for plants.
They broke things down and cycled nutrients back into the soil for plant roots to absorb. What if the ash worms served the same purpose for the Great Tree? The leeches harvested excess life essence from the frogs. Then, as ash worms they harvested residual pure essence from the tortoises. Eventually the worms reproduced and returned toward the Great Tree. Did they die there? Did they feed the roots? Were they providing the ancient tree with essence gathered from both sides of this corrupted realm?
The idea kind of made sense. Sildraxa had mentioned shattering and healing souls. What if the worm's entire cycle had been built to support that process? The frogs generated growth and life essence. The tortoises generated desolation and pure essence. Sildraxa's corrupted brood fed from what spilled out of both sides while slowly feeding the Great Tree essence and nutrients over countless Cycles. How was any of that supposed to heal fractured souls?
The thought flickered from his mind as Cade felt something shift within the vortex. At the outermost edges of the storm, right at the limit of his awareness, particles from his mantle began winking out one by one.
