"You look— different."
"Training," I said.
"Right. Right. Training. Of course." He nodded with the enthusiasm of a man performing normalcy. His eyes kept flicking to the scar above my left eye.
"What brings you to the Academy?" he asked.
"I mean— not that you can't be here, obviously, it's open to— I just thought with the whole—" More vague gesturing.
"— situation, that you'd be —""Business," I said. I didn't elaborate.
"It'd be helpful to have someone as a guide." Darius's face went through another rapid sequence of expressions.
"A— a guide?"
"Someone who still remembers me." I squeezed his shoulder. Let the pressure speak.
"Someone who can show me around. Point me in the right direction. It's good to have friends like that." The word friends produced a visible flinch. A twitch at the corner of his mouth. But I caught it. Whatever you did, Darius, guilt and fear are eating you alive.
"I—" He straightened. Drew a breath. The Academy robes settled around him as he attempted to reassemble whatever dignity he could salvage.
"I appreciate that. Really. But I actually have— I'm headed to the presentations. The year-end research symposium. All the departments submit their final projects and the faculty reviews—""Presentations?"
"It's this week," he said.
"Isn't that why you're here? End of the academic year. Every department showcases their best research. The amphitheater's been booked for three days. I'm actually already late for —" He reached into his robes and produced a booklet. He held it out to me with the desperation of a man offering a bone to a wolf.
"Here. The program. You can —" I took the booklet with one hand. Kept the other on his shoulder.
"Perfect," I said.
"Show me where the amphitheater is." Darius's mouth opened. Closed. Whatever objection had been forming behind his teeth died against the pressure of my grip.
"It's— this way," he managed. I steered him. My hand never left his shoulder. Thin tubes of copper extended from the cube's base, connecting to a secondary housing that contained, I assumed, the Mana Crystal that powered the device. He held it up.

"If the bank verification clears, the offer enters the public record. Other patrons can co-sponsor under the same terms."
