Built by someone, for some purpose, and left here in the bottom of a scrap hold on a planet that humanity believed it had discovered. Colonial protocol required reporting anomalous discoveries within twenty-four hours. If he reported this robot, it would disappear into quarantine — assuming anyone was still reading the reports. It might sit in a sealed container for another twenty years, waiting for an investigation that would never come. He would never see its activation. Would never learn what it was built to do.
He did not report it. He loaded the robot's components onto a cargo sled. The frame was heavy, the alloy denser than steel, the mass distribution different from any colonial machine he had handled.
