The crowd around the Gate of Ascension was larger than anything Zero had seen since the orientation chamber.
Teams clustered in loose formations across the lowland approach, hundreds of contestants spread out before a structure that, up close, resolved into something even more difficult to categorize than it had appeared from the ridge: arches within arches, each one carved from stone that shifted color depending on the angle of approach, the whole formation rising in tiers toward a central threshold wreathed in pale light that pulsed at no rhythm Zero could identify.
A queue had formed at its base, teams moving forward in irregular intervals as some unseen mechanism judged readiness and admitted contestants in turn.
"What happens when they go through?" Viria asked, watching a team of four disappear past the threshold's light.
"The trial, presumably," Miho said.
"We won't know what it entails. We're not taking it." They worked their way toward the front, not through the queue itself but along its edge, where a smaller, less crowded path led toward a separate structure Zero identified after a moment as the Key's intended destination: a narrow secondary archway, unadorned, easy to miss among the grander architecture surrounding it. A system window confirmed it as they approached. Nephrite Key Detected Bypass available. Proceed to the secondary threshold.
Miho looked at the others.
"Together." Viria nodded.
"Together." They stepped through.
The passage was brief and disorienting, a compression of space that Zero registered more as a held breath than a journey, and then they were through, standing on the far side of the Gate in a wide stone plaza where a handful of other teams already stood, recovering from whatever the standard trial had asked of them. A board hung suspended in the air above the plaza, names and numbers shifting in slow, deliberate updates as teams arrived.
Gate of Ascension — Arrival Order (Current) Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon. Team Axiom Team Throne Team Zero — — No one said anything for a moment. Zero looked at the board, at the two names above theirs, and felt something settle in his chest that was not quite disappointment but sat close enough to it that he recognized the shape.
"We bypassed the trial entirely," Viria said, finally.
"And we're still only third?"
"The Key saved us time," Zero said, working through it as he spoke.
"It did not make up for the time the first two teams had already gained before we even knew the Obelisk's location."
"I know the logic," Viria said.
"I just… thought our effort would amount to more than this. We fought a level 60 Imugi for crying out loud." Miho was quiet, studying the board with the same careful, unreadable attention she gave most things that didn't resolve cleanly.
"It is what it is," she said eventually.
"We're through, and we're alive. Third place out of over a thousand teams is not a failure."
"It doesn't feel like a victory either," Viria said. No one corrected her. Then, another system window appeared. CONGRATULATIONS ON CLEARING WORLD 1! Placement: 3rd out of 512 Qualifying Teams Audience Score: 98. 83% Approval rating Point Total: Pending… Overall Rank: Pending Please wait in the lobby for other teams to finish. Estimated Wait Time: 3h 41m 44s (Time Dilation in Effect)"Now we wait." Miho said.
"For what, exactly?" Viria asked. Miho gestured at the window in front of them.
"For everyone else."
They found a quiet section of the plaza, away from the other arrived teams, and they settled in to do the thing they had become unexpectedly quite skilled at over the past two months: waiting together, without needing to fill the silence with more than was necessary. Zero watched the board update periodically, new names appearing in a slow trickle as more teams found their way through the standard trial. He did not say much.
He was aware, in a way he had become increasingly comfortable naming to himself even when he didn't say it aloud, that their third place finish sat oddly against everything they had survived to reach it: the Cloud Sea, the sect, the Basan's cold fire, the tiger's den, the Imugi's reverse scale, the ambush at the riverbank. He had expected, without quite admitting he expected it, that the number on the board would reflect some of that. It did not seem to.
He filed the discomfort the way he filed most things now; not discarded, but waiting for more information to resolve it into something he understood.
After nearly four hours, a system window opened, addressing itself to the plaza at large rather than any single team. World 1 Concluded Calculating World 1 point totals… Teams Qualified for World 2: 512 Time Until World 2 Start: 20 days Please wait patiently in your rooms. As soon as Zero finished reading, a white light engulfed his vision.
