I just don't want to muddy the continuity of the main serial by dropping a side story into the middle of the run. Keeping it separate keeps the reading order clean for anyone working through things in sequence. Fair warning: it started life as a "short story" and then quietly grew into a short novel while I wasn't looking. Much longer than I planned.
