The cloth split apart as if cut from inside. Something red-black and metallic unfolded against my skin with a dry, insect-like click, all curved root prongs and narrow ribs around a hollow centre. The heartwood bird beneath my shirt flared so hot I hissed and tried to drop the thing, but the fragment did not fall. It pulled. "But it can perhaps be understood there better than here." The fragment pulsed once beneath my shirt, and for a moment Veinfinder, Appraisal, and the heartwood warmth overlapped in a way that made the courtyard sink beneath its own surface. Stone pins. Red cuts. Root-shaped metal. Carved heartwood. Blood channels. Old ward logic. Something missing at the centre of the setting where another piece should have been. The thought arrived too fast. I looked once more at the cut ward stone and then toward the upper terraces where Talia had vanished into smoke, old vines, and names no one finished saying. The fragment rested against my heartwood core like it had always been waiting there, and Appraisal, still too pleased with itself, kept the result at the edge of my awareness.

More mind. Less body. Less will. The world had not given me a gift. It had given me a sharper knife and taken skin in advance.
