Chương 77: Chapter 68: The Engine

Muscle Tempering began three days after Joe decided his Skin had reached the highest state Blood Energy could presently produce. He waited because there was no reason not to. Privately, the ninth tempering had already answered the question he cared about. Further Blood Energy circulation through the Skin produced no meaningful improvement, no matter how carefully he varied the effort. The layer had settled into a state so far beyond ordinary Skin Completion that Joe had given it a name of his own. Great Completion.

Publicly, none of that existed. Joe reported ordinary Skin Completion to the guard the following morning. The assessment was almost anticlimactic. Halven had him circulate Blood Energy evenly through several regions of the skin, checked the consistency of the response, then used the same controlled strikes and pressure tests the guard employed for anyone claiming the end of the realm. Joe allowed the impacts to move him slightly more than necessary and let his breathing deepen at the appropriate places.

He did not pretend to be weak; that would have been as suspicious as showing too much. He simply displayed the kind of clean, well-trained Skin Completion people already expected from someone with his reputation. Halven finished the last check, looked over the result once, and signed Joe's record.

"Skin Completion," he said. Joe nodded. Halven tapped the page with one finger.

"Muscle next."

"Yes." There was no ceremony. No announcement. Joe had passed enough guard assessments by then to understand that cultivation milestones only felt enormous to the person crossing them. To the guard, another young practitioner reaching Skin Completion meant a line in a record, a change in permitted training, and perhaps a few comments over dinner. He found Simon waiting outside the assessment room. Simon had apparently tried to look as though he were there by coincidence and failed badly.

"Well?"

"Passed." Simon stared at him.

"That's it?"

"What were you expecting?"

"I don't know. You could look happier."

"I am happy."

"You look exactly the same." Joe considered changing his expression. Simon held up a hand.

"Don't. That would be worse." They started across the compound together. Deepwinter still held Blackwood, although the season had begun weakening around its edges. Snow remained in the shadows of northern walls and beneath market awnings where sunlight rarely reached, but the central blackstone roads were mostly clear by afternoon.

Water ran from roofs during the warmest part of the day, then froze again after sunset, forcing merchants to spend their mornings avoiding dripping eaves and their evenings avoiding patches of ice. Beyond the western wall, the forest looked almost colorless beneath a pale sky, its bare branches opening long views into hills that summer leaves normally concealed. Simon remained quiet longer than usual. Joe noticed before they reached the practice yard. That alone was enough to make him look over.

"What?" Simon glanced at him.

"Nothing." Joe waited. Simon lasted perhaps five seconds.

"You're younger than me."

"I know."

"Three years younger."

"I also know that."

"And you're starting Muscle before me." There it was. The words were light enough to pass as a complaint, but Joe knew his brother too well to miss the pressure beneath them. Simon had never enjoyed being behind. That trait had existed before either of them knew what Blood Energy was. As children, if Joe learned something first, Simon immediately wanted to prove he could do it better. If another boy climbed higher, Simon found a taller tree.

If someone praised Joe for patience, Simon usually responded by becoming aggressively patient for several days. Martial cultivation gave that instinct numbers and boundaries. Skin. Muscle. Bone. Being the older brother no longer guaranteed being ahead. Joe said, "You're close." Simon made a face.

"That's what people say when someone else already finished."

"It doesn't become false because you dislike hearing it."

"You reached Middle Skin after me."

"Yes."

"Then you caught up."

"Yes."

"And now you're ahead." Joe glanced at him.

"Also yes." Simon looked increasingly dissatisfied with the conversation. Joe could have comforted him. He decided accuracy would be more useful.

"You've been improving steadily. Don't ruin that because I crossed first." Simon looked over sharply.

"I'm not going to ruin anything."

"Good."

"You're very annoying when you try to sound reasonable."

"I'm usually reasonable."

"That's part of the problem." Joe almost smiled. They reached the edge of the training yard, where several guards were working through stance transitions on ground hardened by the cold. Simon's gaze lingered on them, then shifted toward the section where advanced practitioners sometimes trained under heavier resistance. Joe recognized the look.

"Don't suddenly double your sessions."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Triple them?" Simon glared at him. Joe continued, "Skin doesn't care which one of us finishes first."

"I know."

"And Muscle won't disappear."

"I know." A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. Simon exhaled through his nose. Then, after a moment, he added, "Still annoying." That was fair. Joe left him there and went to collect his revised training authorization. By evening, several members of the guard already knew. There was no need for secrecy about the public milestone.

Halven's record changed what Joe was allowed to practice openly, which medicines could reasonably appear on his requests, and what level of physical conditioning other guards expected from him. Daren slapped him once on the shoulder and told him not to become unbearable. Cole asked whether Muscle Tempering meant Joe would finally stop looking too thin. Simon informed both of them that Joe had been unbearable for years. The comments passed. That was exactly what Joe wanted.

Publicly, Joe Vale had reached Skin Completion at a young but believable age and was preparing to enter Muscle Tempering. Privately, he had tempered the same layer nine times until ordinary Skin Completion was no longer a useful comparison. The difference between those two truths would remain his. He gave himself three full days before beginning the next layer. Years earlier, three idle days would have irritated him. Now he understood that the body did not care whether impatience felt productive.

Skin had finished changing, but the rest of him still needed time to settle around that change. Food, sleep, ordinary movement, and low-intensity Blood Energy circulation were cheap precautions before beginning work deeper inside the body. Perfect Body made that settling process unusually clean. The reinforced skin did not sit awkwardly over unchanged tissue or distort his movement.

Subtle adjustments continued through his posture, connective structures, and habitual tension as his body incorporated what he had earned. Perfect Health removed the small accumulations of strain that repeated tempering would otherwise have left behind. Neither talent gave him Muscle Tempering. They simply ensured that when he began it, he would begin from the best version of the foundation he had already built.

During those three days, Joe reread the Muscle Tempering material he had copied from Theodere's accessible library years earlier. Compared with everything he had learned through repeated Skin cultivation, the manual was almost disappointingly simple. That did not mean it was crude. It meant the first step had already been solved for him. A normal practitioner tempered Muscle once. The instructions therefore cared about reaching reliable Completion, not about squeezing every possible improvement from the tissue.

Controlled tension, Blood Energy circulation, recovery, nourishment, gradual load increase, avoidance of tears and joint damage. Enough explanation to build a competent Muscle practitioner without encouraging unnecessary experimentation. Joe read every line anyway. He had learned not to dismiss simplicity merely because he had grown capable of seeing beyond it. The method had survived because it worked. His job was not to prove himself smarter than the people who wrote it.

His job was to understand exactly what they were doing before deciding whether anything needed changing.? The first session took place in the same private training room he had used through the final stages of Skin Tempering. The owner had replaced one roof tile after the last snowstorm, but otherwise the room had not changed.

Packed-earth floor, two heavy support posts, a rack holding padded staffs and training clubs, one narrow shuttered window and the faint mixture of dust, old sweat and charcoal that seemed permanently absorbed into the walls. Joe warmed the room with a brazier and then stood near the center wearing only light training clothes. Muscle was immediately different from Skin. Skin Tempering had depended heavily on controlled external stress.

Friction, pressure, impact, environmental irritation, then Blood Energy reinforcing the tissue responding to those stresses. Muscle required tension generated from within. Joe settled into a deep stance. Static Foundation arranged his posture almost automatically. Feet placed. Knees tracking correctly. Pelvis neutral. Spine balanced. Nothing wasted. He tightened the muscles through his thighs and hips gradually. Not maximal contraction. Enough to create meaningful strain. Then he moved Blood Energy inward.

The sensation changed the moment it passed beneath the completed Skin layer. Heat spread through the thighs; deeper than the surface warmth he had grown accustomed to. Pressure followed, then a strange awareness of different regions contributing unequally to what he had previously thought of simply as "the muscle." His right thigh stabilized cleanly. The left recruited slightly differently. One group near the hip tightened too early. Another lagged. Joe held the position. The imbalance became clearer.

His breathing remained controlled. Blood Energy followed the active tissue. The muscles began trembling. Joe continued only long enough to identify what the trembling was telling him. Then he stopped. No heroic endurance. No collapsing onto the floor. He simply stood upright and let the muscles relax. The experiential return came almost immediately. Not new knowledge appearing from nowhere. Feedback. His stance had been good, but the tension pattern had not. One side had overcompensated.

He had unconsciously driven too much force through the front of the thigh while the deeper hip stabilizers joined late. His breathing had also become shallower during the final portion, subtly increasing tension through the torso. Joe stood still while the lesson settled. So this is what Muscle changes first. Not size. Coordination. Force production depended on more than possessing muscle tissue.

The body had to recruit it correctly, control opposing groups, stabilize joints and release tension efficiently after the movement ended. He repeated the stance. This time he adjusted the hip earlier. The difference was immediate. Less trembling. More force. Lower perceived effort. Joe stopped after the second attempt. That was enough. One correct effort gave him more useful experience than another practitioner might gather from days of repetition.

Doing twenty more sets because the room was rented for the evening would not make the decision intelligent. He dressed. Then his stomach growled so loudly in the quiet room that Joe looked down at himself.

"Seriously?" Apparently Muscle Tempering had opinions about resource consumption.? The hunger became undeniable before he reached the end of the street. Joe bought two meat buns from a vendor operating beneath a cloth awning despite the cold. Steam escaped when he tore the first open, carrying the smell of peppered pork into the winter air. He finished both before reaching the next intersection. He was still hungry. The noodle stall near the guard quarter was open. Joe stopped there too.

The older man running it watched him finish one bowl and ask for another.

"Muscle training?" Joe looked up. The question was ordinary enough.

"Yes." The man nodded with the sympathy of someone who had seen the problem before.

"My oldest boy did Muscle."

"How far?"

"Completed it."

"And stopped?"

"Stopped."

"Why?" The man shrugged while cutting noodles for another customer.

"Had a wife by then. Warehouse paid well enough. Training ate almost as much as he did." Joe looked at the second bowl. That answer was probably more representative of the martial world than the stories surrounding talented practitioners. Most people did not spend their lives chasing the highest realm they could theoretically reach. They reached enough. Enough strength for safer work. Enough skill to join the guard. Enough status to earn more. Enough physical ability that continuing cost more than it returned.

There was nothing shameful about that. Joe's circumstances were simply different. Food is cheap compared with permanent progress. For him, yes. Not for everyone. He finished the noodles and paid. Then bought bread on the way home.? The next morning his thighs felt sore in a way Skin cultivation had never produced. Not injured. Used. The soreness sat deep inside the muscle and changed whenever he climbed stairs or lowered himself into a chair. Joe found himself smiling the first time he noticed it. New tissue.

New rules. He did not temper again. Recovery first. That decision became more important as Muscle training continued. Skin tolerated frequent low-level conditioning because surface tissue recovered relatively quickly. Muscle could be pushed harder, but damaging it faster than it rebuilt would simply turn x100 efficiency into x100 stupidity. Joe began spacing meaningful sessions farther apart. Heavy tempering. Food. Sleep. Light movement. Observation.

Then another session when the soreness and deeper fatigue had resolved. He did not keep incriminating written records of the hidden progress. By now, that idea seemed almost absurd. A private notebook could be stolen, searched or found after an accident. He could remember the meaningful milestones perfectly well. Harmless medicine notes went on paper. Secrets stayed in his head.? The appetite did not improve. If anything, it grew.

Within two weeks Joe had developed a routine around food that would have horrified Lily. Breakfast became larger. Lunch doubled on training days. He carried dried meat during guard work. After evening sessions, he sometimes ate enough that Edwin's household servants began preparing additional portions when they knew he was coming. Simon noticed before anyone else said anything. They were eating dinner at Edwin's house when Joe finished his second bowl of rice and reached for more meat.

Simon stopped talking mid-sentence. Joe looked at him.

"What?" Simon stared at the serving dish. Then at Joe.

"How much have you eaten?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"No." Mira looked between them.

"Why are you counting his food?"

"I wasn't. Then he ate enough that counting became unavoidable." Joe took another piece of meat. Simon pointed at it.

"That. That was supposed to be for everyone."

"There is more."

"That is not the point." Edwin looked up from a merchant letter.

"There is more?" Mira nodded.

"Kitchen made extra." Simon turned toward her.

"Why?" She looked at Joe. Simon followed her gaze. Joe continued eating.

"You planned for this?" Mira said, "He has been eating like this for almost two weeks."

"And nobody warned me?" Joe frowned.

"Why would you need warning?"

"Because I am also eating."

"You have food."

"Less food now." Mira laughed. Simon looked personally betrayed. Joe said, "You are doing Muscle training too."

"Not whatever version of Muscle training makes a person consume livestock." Joe paused very slightly. Careful. His own rate of progress was unusual, but appetite from heavy martial training was not. He shrugged.

"I train more." Simon stared at him.

"That is annoyingly believable." Edwin folded the merchant letter.

"How much more food are we buying because of you?" Joe glanced at Mira. She smiled.

"No."

"What?"

"You are about to calculate whether you should reimburse us."

"That seems reasonable."

"You already pay toward meals."

"Not enough if consumption changed." Simon leaned back.

"He turned dinner into accounting." Edwin looked at Joe for a moment, then said, "Increase it by two silver a month." Joe nodded. Mira stared at her father.

"You answered him."

"He was going to ask until I did." Simon looked around the table as though he had entered the wrong family. Joe smiled and reached for more rice.? Muscle Tempering progressed rapidly in technique and slowly in biology. That distinction became one of the defining features of the realm. One Effort Equals a Hundred let Joe understand a session at frightening speed.

He could feel which muscles overworked, where stabilization failed, which breathing pattern interfered with output, and whether his posture allowed the intended tissue to carry the load. But understanding how to build stronger muscle did not mean the muscle became fully rebuilt the moment he understood. Food still had to become tissue. Damage had to repair. Blood supply had to adapt. Tendons and connective structures had to keep pace. That forced Joe into a rhythm he had not needed during Foundation practice.

His talent could accelerate the lesson faster than the body could assimilate the result. For the first time, he found that reassuring. A biological speed limit might save him from himself. Technique is no longer the bottleneck. Recovery is. That changed how he thought about resources. Medicine could improve recovery. Food supplied raw material. Sleep. Time. He could buy some of those constraints downward. He could not eliminate them entirely.
